Dark of Knight by Elizabeth Johns is the story of Felix Knight, the youngest of the Knight brothers, introduced one by one in the Gentlemen of Knights series. Felix is a soldier, a spy, in service to General Wellesley in Spain, during the war against Napoleon. There is a traitor in their midst and Felix is hot on his trail. To his chagrin he discovers another on the same trail, a woman. It takes him very little time to discover who this woman is: the daughter of the Spanish commander, Senorita Catalina de Mendoza, daughter of a duke. At first he is resentful, then skeptical, finally resigned. They have to choice but to work together. Off they go on adventure after adventure, looking for the traitor or traitors. No one is exempt from scrutiny, including Catalina's father. It is a rocky ride. It is war. People get hurt, even spies.
This was a very fun book, moving out of England and England's women to meet Catalina, the much-loved daughter who was intelligent, brave, loving, and loyal. She was not a coward and she was as good a spy as any. Felix had convinced himself that love and marriage was not for him. He believed it so thoroughly that when it happened, he didn't know what it was. It was a fun romp through Spain, despite the war and the death. Felix was a good man and he deserved the love of a good woman, which he got in the end. The plot finale was surprising to the characters as well as the reader. It was worth the time. I recommend it.
