After five long years as a slave to the hard, cold streets, Nayvee LaCroix was done selling their soul. Desperately at the end of their rope, Nayvee knew something had to change before they made the grave decision to end it all, permanently. The night Nayvee had given up hope they met a fellow lonely soul who also had been yearning for more in life. Trystan Diamond, successful entrepreneur with more money than anyone could dream of, was instantly attracted to Nayvee and their chivalrous charm and boy-ish good looks before gaining any knowledge of what Nayvee really was. Switching on their charm, Nayvee scored the biggest payload of their life that could help get them off the streets, but what Nayvee wasn’t expecting was for the charming and handsome millionaire to fall in love with them. Living life by the rules of the ruthless streets, Nayvee’s defenses were always up, creating a hardened wall for anyone to break past their offense, including Trystan. Little by little, Nayvee’s less than desirable lifestyle mixed and mingled with Trystan’s refined, sophisticated life, slowly chipping away at that wall, letting an astronomical and blinding bright light of love to penetrate Nayvee’s heart. Just when Nayvee and Trystan slowly find their footing on the shaky ground of their budding romantic relationship, in stepped Rian, a ghost from Nayvee’s past, and partner on the streets, stirring up old emotions in Nayvee and new ones in Trystan. Rough meets refined in this tale about kindred spirits who don’t conform to the norm and fall head first in love with each other in this modern day Pretty Woman meets Cinderella story. Words: 78,470
The Kitten series will always remain my shining star. Rae and her family is what got me into writing and what's kept me going. As I venture off towards new characters and storylines, one thing that will stay the same is the butch/femme dynamic. I have even dabbled with butch/soft butch non-binary characters. I love masculine women and everything about them, from their charm, chivalry, style and everything else in between.
This past spring I happily signed a contract with Painted Hearts Publishing for my new book, A Jade's Diamond, that will be released in the new year. I hope to continue working with the lgbtq publisher for more great stories I write.
I look forward to hearing your opinion toward my older books and my newer books that will be published in the near future.
An unconventional, no holds barred style of book that is raw and real.
I thought this book deserves a little attention. Calling it different is an understatement. This book is unconventional.
Navyee has spent five years on the streets selling their soul. On the night they decided to call it quits, they meet Trystan, a successful entrepreneur and lonely soul. Trystan falls head over heels for Navyee and the two try to make it work despite coming from two different worlds. I would like to point out that none of the main characters are femme. Navyee is a non-binary soft butch and Trystan is a stone butch, both prefer to be referred to as “they/them”. If I’m not ‘woke’ before this book, I am certainly ‘woke’ now.
If you can't take unconventional, give this book a miss. Because this book is first and foremost about the life of a person of the streets. There are no holds barred, so be prepared for a real and raw book. This book is also about finding true love at a time and place that seems hopeless. Trystan is a dream come true and the fantasy every person deserves because they treat people with respect and dignity. Trystan gives a damn when no one else does and because of that Navyee can find the self-worth they need and deserve.
Rian, a character from Navyee’s past appears in the second part of the book and gives the second half a different spin. The second part revolves around love – love that can be expressed in so many ways and examined at so many different levels and makes you question what you know about it.
I would like to highlight that a lot of love-making takes place in this book but it isn’t an erotica and I never once felt that it was much.
Frankly speaking, I found this book to be quite remarkable.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars. I was in a terrible book slump and I needed something different, something unconventional. So, I decided to check my TBR list for a book that matched these descriptors and, wow, this book was all I hoped for.
I couldn’t put this book down and that is saying something because this book has some of my biggest pet peeves. For those who want to know; insta-love, forgotten injuries and a main character that displays some behavior that I generally do not tolerate well. But, I simply couldn’t care.
So what’s different? The characters for starters, Trystan is a stone butch and Nayvee is a more androgynous soft butch type, and they both use they/them pronouns. This type of pairing is not still often seen in books and I found it refreshing.
Furthermore, this book is so dark and raw. It can be roughly split up in two parts. The first part is mainly about Nayvee, who’s living in the slums and getting by with hooking and other jobs. A vivid, or should I glum, image of the street life is given, (including all the bad parts like physical assault and rape). You get to know Nayvee, who’s hardened by street life, but at the same time is a romantic soul. It’s one of those characters that acts all tough, but is deep down very sweet and I was in no time rooting for them. In this first part they also meet the very rich Trystan. Trystan was a bit of an enigma to me, they were all galant, caring and romantic, but they also displayed agressieve and possessive behavior which felt predatory at times. This type of character almost never works for me, and it did make me a bit uncomfortable at times, but with this dark and raw book it weirdly fitted. The second half of the book is more centered around a third person, an old friend that enters their life while they are still trying to shape their relationship. They have to make choices about their life and love for each other.
The spice rating of this book is pretty high, there are a lot of sex scenes, but it didn’t feel excessive or overused to me. Considering the storyline I think it can be expected really.
This book is not for everyone, but if you are looking for something dark and different I highly recommend this.
During a lull in reviewing books in January and after reading an article online, I revisited two books. This is one of them. I had not read any of Dafoe's work before but this one really impacted me and was hard to forget! Once again I was transported into a gray, seedy world with despair and stifled longing then when all seemed filled with darkness a little push was given and a hand held out. Is it grasped or not. If I could rate this book more than 5 stars I would. Not a storyline for everyone but damn it hits you in the gut and deserves more exposure.
I read this book a couple times and mulled over quite a few aspects before settling down to write my review. A story that needs to be read. Words like, sad, cold, hard, tough, gritty, demeaning and brave came to mind. I got weepy in some instances because the book IMHO was written in such a matter of fact/plain way it simply sliced to the core so I won't hold back with soft language. Nayvee is a street worker known as "Poppet" (their code "puss or mouth") who wants out after years of losing a tiny bit of themselves with each passing night. Tristan, moneyed entrepreneur and dapper butch, cross paths one night with Nayvee. Two souls who didn't know they needed each other - connect. The descriptions are gritty and sometimes difficult to read, bloody and filled with raw emotions, passion and steam. This is definitely NOT "Pretty Woman". That was a fairytale. This reeks of the dark often hidden side of prostitution, the anguish of despair, loss of innocence and acceptance maybe that is all one is worth before a semblance of light and perhaps a better life presents itself. The Masons of the world can make or break you or death will. For all the darkness, I was transported by a well paced storyline and recommend this read with 5 stars. On my re-read shelf.
An incredibly unique story, very confronting and raw. Nothing like I have ever read before.
Superbly written. A romance, as such as it is (honestly I'm still wondering, if I'm honest - and I think that's part of the overall point...) between two more 'butch' women loving characters.
Our MC Nayvee (29) is a sex worker in the slums, hating their life and the daily grind, of their body not being their own, being raped and disrespected. It's raw and yet matter-of-fact in it's realness, and how Nayvee handles things. They have a cool androgynous vibe, soft butch if you will and prefer they/them pronouns. They are more attracted to masculine women.
Enter Trystan, (41) a self proclaimed stone butch, who is always packing, and often mistaken for a man, but also prefers they-them pronouns. They also are attracted to butch and androgynous women.
When Nayvee tries to pick them up, Trystan is immediately enamored - they want their forever person, and thinks Nayvee could be that one. Thus starts a very tumultuous relationship, that is all encompassing, and almost obsessive in nature.
This is where I struggled, because the love comes strong and fast, proclamations between them and the rescuer and rescuee quickly complicating their roles. Trystan shows themselves to be volatile sometimes in trying to protect Nayvee, and while you are rooting for Nayvee to get out of that world she was in, and live it up in the penthouse like Pretty Woman - you can't help but feel unease, too.
Nayvee's past is always nearby, and threats start - plus an old friendship and love also re-appears. Further complicating matters. There's a poly-angle (three-some) that I personally could not believe in, and made me uncomfortable, and the entire way that storyline ends was far to convenient for my tastes.
Ultimately, I think it's about imperfect, messed up people trying to make things work - but often failing, but the tone is sort of erroneous and just setting it all out there, without any judgement or morality, which is where your own values will come into play in how you react to various things that happen. So I did find it confronting, but thought-provoking in huge ways.
So if you're into more open minded and completely out of the ordinary plot lines, with utterly imperfect people who are more masc of femme, and find that attractive in each other - while trying to overcome their own damaged pasts and knee-jerk reactions - then you may enjoy it. But it's certain a mind-bender! I have a feeling I'll be thinking and re-thinking about this for quite some time!
A very real and gritty story with two excellent non-binary leads. When prostitute Nayvee meets rich yet charitable Trystan, their love is instantaneous. Though everything isn't as easy as they'd hoped when one of Nayvee's previous clients doesn't get what he wants. (CW; there are a couple graphic scenes of attempted rape but there is a HEA).
I've read a couple of this author's books and this is the best I've read so far. The non-binary representation is great, both characters hot with spicy sex scenes, especially between two masc. leaning characters, and it's very well written. It's not a fluffy romance, but it's genuine, emotional, and certainly a page-turner. Highly recommend.
Sometimes, more often than I'd like, I sit to review a book I've just read and I know I won't have the words to express the feels. That's why I'm a reader and not a writer, and that's definitely the case with Char Dafoe's "A Jade's Diamond".
Nayvee is a non-binary streetwalker. Trystan is a "male of center" lesbian entrepreneur. Theirs is an unlikely match, think "Pretty Woman" with more grit and angst and violence. Both Nayvee and Tristan use they/their as personal pronouns which took some getting used to reading, but it works.
Five "damp in all the right places" stars. Very recommended, with a potential trigger warning for 'an “off-screen” act of violence as told from the point of view of a main character.'
ARC review-I find this book as one of top 10 I read this year. It is absolutely moving. The experience of main characters goes beyond troublesome. I can't even imagine living life like that and I would definitely be one of the first to help. I have to admit this book was moving really fast and I felt the fear and stress as well. The whole setting in this book was great. Really wonderful read.
This was one wild ride! Very different from most WLW books that I’ve read and extra spicy!
Nayvee was a sweetheart and I’m happy that she resolved her problems and found her true love. I especially enjoyed the beginning of the book. Tristan was too controlling for me, but she had all good intentions and that made her dominant side ok.
Nayvee has had a hard past and their present is really not helping as they find themselves on hard times and the wrong side of the tracks. When Nayvee meets Trystan, a successful entrepreneur, they have a spark of connection that is undeniable and Nayvee wonders if it is all too good to be true. They are convinced Trystan is like everyone else they meet in their line of work and would never want them for the person they are. When Trystan falls hard for Nayvee they both wonder if their relationship is going to change their worlds forever and the best but for Nayvee it is not that simple as the past just keeps popping up to haunt her.
This was quite the story and adventure, especially for Nayvee. It was very gritty and dark but that is nothing less than expected for a character in Nayvee’s position and with their past. I loved how Char took a subject of gender stereotyping and just completely flipped it. Both character’s this book use the pronoun ‘they’ and it was a fresh and unique concept that delivered a different kind of story to those I usually read.
There was a lot of action, drama, angst and silly misunderstandings between Trystan and Nayvee but it was exactly what I would expect from a story like this. It had that Hollywood action movie pace and it was just such an unpredictable journey for both Nayvee and Trystan. They had no idea what was going to happen next, nor did I as the reader, which was exciting. Yet, while all this action thriller plot was going on, everything Nayvee was going through was heart-breaking. They had so many difficult decisions to make and kept encountering new issues that left them in difficult or truly traumatising positions, and when living on the edge like that, it was quite intense to experience with Nayvee.
Char did a great job of delivering a different, unique, engaging and racing story that I really enjoyed, and portrayed the difficulties and challenges faced by all the characters in a way that suited their personalities. While I appreciate this story might not be to everyone’s liking, as it is quite a harrowing life Nayvee has, this story is an experience that many will never encounter as a reality, yet that so many other people do and the insight into a world usually hidden in darkness or feared by others is something Char excels at highlighting and raising awareness about. The reality of the world portrayed for both Nayvee and Trystan’s characters is all too real unfortunately, and although for the most part what Nayvee goes through is unpleasant, I for one was sadden and felt empathetic towards them as a character because they didn’t ask to be in such circumstances. The hardship of which, I think Char captured perfectly in the story and characterisation.
I highly recommend this book. Char’s writing is going from strength to strength with each new story and I am excited to see what Char will write in the future. Each story brings a new experience and I urge anyone who likes the unconventional and controversial to give this story a go, as you won’t be disappointed.
A learning experience, embracing raw emotions and a quest for love
When I started reading this book, I realized that I was going to have to look up many terms. It depicts a world that is so different from the one I am familiar with, but what surprised me is that I was still able to connect with the characters and even recognize in them some traits of myself.
I told myself: “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.
I didn’t focus on what gender or no gender the characters were, I tried to read the message they were trying to subtly tell me, I tried to read between the lines, between the words spoken and unspoken. If anyone would do this, they would be able to learn that even if something is “different” at first sight, this doesn’t give them the right to condemn, ostracize a work of art.
Learn what the characters are secretly telling you.
Nayvee is such a fragile soul, selling their body to make it through the day; constantly feeling the weight of the world upon themselves and hating all the death and darkness their eyes have to witness each single day and night. The slums, the chaos, the sharp blasting sounds, the unknown faces, the unwelcomed hands of all the filthy John and Jane Does touching their body: the hustle and bustle of the city.
Nayvee wants to escape it all. Quoting the book: “dead to the world”; “sick of it all”; “forcing myself to push it all deep down”; “I wouldn’t have to feel it or face it”. Nayvee has lost all faith in humanity, their nickname on the streets is “Poppet”, a sweet child, an angelic looking creature, who unfortunately has been turned into a “Puppet” by society. They have lost everything, they don’t feel worthy of anything, but they still have a fable flame in themselves, which is only waiting for someone to let it sparkle again and find joy.
Trystan is instead presented in the second chapter with two simple words “The quiet”. “The peace”, in direct contrast with Nayvee’s world. It’s impossible not to notice the similarities with the legend of Tristan, with the courteous and gentle knight, with the “To protect and serve” motto. A true gentleman, Trystan has everything, but “Love” and is looking for someone to protect and share all their fortune with.
Can Fate bring them together? Can two people who come from completely different backgrounds find each other, see in each other eyes something that makes them a “whole”? How far will they push themselves to declare their love?
Can someone who is “dead inside” be brought back to the light and feel again “alive”? Can someone who always had it all learn that you cannot “own someone”, but to truly love them, you also have to let them free?
Raw, pure and instinctive love/lust/passion at first sight can do this.
This book made me richer inside: it has a love story that reminds me of chivalry, there is thriller, there is this raw element of passion and wanting to own and yet let the person you love be free to choose, there's a love sacrifice, lust and putting your all trust and your life into someonelse hands. There is even poetry in some of your prose. There is always a bit of this duality in all the characters, as indeed, we are all made of light and darkness or joy and sorrow.
The brutality of the truth can leave you bare, but it's up to you as a reader to explore it and make it yours. Don’t be afraid of what is not like you, because maybe you, yourself are not like the others. Each and every single of us is worthy of respect and love.
• A Jade's Diamond • Author Char Dafoe • MC Nayvee LaCroix & Trystan Diamond • Soul • They/them
The story opens up with Nayvee going to work. They’re so tired of the life and their choices. It seemed more overwhelming this night over any other night.
Trystan wanted true love. Trystan had their head in the clouds. At 41 they believe their person was still out their for them.
This was a instant love after one night. Trystan was in deep. They wanted a love of their own. Nayvee has some issues that reveal themselves back to back. Trystan was there to take care of them.
There was a person from Nayvee past, that makes life complicated for the relationship, they have with Trystan. I felt the love may not make it, because of the past. They both had issues with the upper parts of their body. It took a lot of trust on both parts to show that part of their bodies.
I was touched by the struggles Nayvee was going through. She looked down on herself because of her job. Trystan was kind and would tend to their needs.
This book make you stop and think how hard it’s for those who have to walk alone, and fight to survive. How vulnerable you are when you’re young.
I highly recommend this book. It is a very interesting. This author tells a story with a twist, but love and kindness is at the core of the book.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Received this as an arc and voluntary leaving a review.
Phew, where to begin, this book has so much in it, the story is fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when I thought, okay, a moment of peace, something came out of the left field.
It’s an unconventional raw story, it doesn’t hold back. This is by far the best book I’ve read all year. And I’ve read a lot of books!
It has a lot of things I like to read about, Stone-butch, non-binary, butch, femmes and a gritty intense story. It’s a dark story but you’ll see the light shining through, that light becomes brighter and brighter.
The book has a trigger warning at the start, some parts may be hard to read for some readers. It’s about life on the streets and all the things that come with that, Char Dafoe doesn’t hold anything back, so remember this when picking up this book.
I really liked this book, the story was solid! I felt for the MC’s from the start and got sucked into the story from the beginning. Reading the book made me fall in love with Trystan, they were just perfect, in my eyes at least.
It’s about surviving, second changes, finding your person and trusting yourself and others. Most of all it was about love and what lengths people will go for protecting and helping the people they love.
The sex is crazy hot. sexy, well written, boundaries are explained and you feel the bond and trust they have with each other.
For me, the ending of the book triggered a lot of memories, I’ll not go into detail, but even with me being triggered, the ending did fit this book perfectly, so I wouldn’t have wanted it another way.
Not my typical read, but I found it to be an interesting story. I just reviewed a book that had what I felt was a blown out of proportion butch stereotype. This book, I think, has a much more realistic portrayal of what a butch is like as far as dress and attitude. The book is well written and is about true love, acceptance, redemption, forgiveness and grief. It does end with a HEA but there is a very rough spot at the end that is a very black moment but its drama outside the relationship.
This book takes you to places you don't want to go. In the beginning. Then Nayvee a non binary butch prostitute looking to get out of the business meets Trystan a handsome nonbinary butch. Trystan is a very successful entrepreneur and immediately falls for Nayvee. But Nayvee has an ex john that wants her. He spells trouble for her. Her bestfriend Rian shows up after having left the life 3 yrs ago. This story is beautiful, gritty, heartwrenching and loving. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!
I am dnf-ing this book a little less than 50% in. I wanted to like this book, I was excited for this book! It's not everyday that a book has two leads who are both non-binary butch lesbians. And I'll give the book that I enjoyed the butch and stone butch aspect of the book, the uathor knew what she was writing about.
In general the story did not work well for me (instalove is just not for me) but what made me stop reading this book is the dubious represenation of the non-binary leads. The author is a cis woman, I knew that going in and I believe that cis writers can do right by non-binary characters. I know that the author is trans-inclusive and supports trans people, however what I will point out are things that bothered me, a non-binary lesbian reader, as well as other trans friends when I shared it with them. I do not not believe that the author had malicious intents and this is just a consequence of living in a biology-obsessed society. The book clearly shows that the author has tried to get the characters' identity right by having them have multiple discussion about it but it is not supported by the rest of the writing where the offenses ranged from little inconsequential things (but a writer having done their research should have done better) to transphobic and fetichistic comments.
- the small things: the use of "cisgendered" and "i identify as" (instead of "i am"). Honestly not that important but still made me do a double take, since this book was published in 2021 and trans people frequently speak about their dislike of this terminology.
- what was really weird and came off as transphobic : the numerous use of the word "male" and "female" ESPECIALLY when describing attraction. I did give the author the benefit of the doubts because the lead does use "male" as a descriptor of how they present (masculine, manly, etc) but upon reading futher it does not seem like the author was using the word in a trans-inclusive fashion (see "female genitals", and all the talk about "male" attraction that is just transmisogynistic). After sharing this with friends we've all concluded than unnecessary and abundant use of "female" and "male" make us uncomfortable and feels like reducing us to our bodies.
- what made me stop reading: there's one sentence when a character asks Nayee one of the leads about their partner Trystan.
"I gotta be honest with ya Nay but your woman looks like a he."
I chuckled "Technically, or should I say, biologically, they are a she. Trystan doesn't conform to the norm."
If you can see the problem with it congrats. Otherwise, Nay does not have express consent to out Trystan like that. Trystan has expressed earlier in the story that they like being taken for a man. Outing them was not necessary and felt gross: you do not have to tell everyone about your partner's body and genitals (what they're doing here). They could have gone with "yeah they're also non-binary" without doing the whole "biologically" thing.
This book is a triumph for the unconventional. This author always gives me something I didn’t know I needed. This time it was two non-binary lead MC’s known as them/they. Then halfway through the story a 3rd non-binary joins the storyline. As someone who struggled being gender fluid, reading a story with characters a bit like me is a breathe of fresh air and much needed.
This story is raw, real, at times painful, but so honest and true it’s beautiful in its own dark way. The sex scenes are hot. The erotica in this story is a wonderful education in arousal - what/who do we find attractive, what brings us pleasure.
I loved it and I’ll be re-reading it, which is the best compliment I can give a book.
I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book that I have read that had non-binary characters. The author knocked this one out of the park. I couldn’t put it down! Some people may have had some triggers but they have been warned. Someone was always packing and the sex was hot!
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*
-TRIGGER WARNING - a note from the publisher : “The story contains some scenes of a graphic sexual nature, in addition to an “off-screen” act of violence as told from the point of view of a main character (Chapter 5), that some readers may find triggering.”
‘A jades Diamond’ tells the love story of Nayvee, who identifies as non-binary, and Trystan, a stone butch.
Throughout the book, the use of the characters chosen pronouns (both they/them) is refreshing to read, yet not confusing as the author does an excellent job of clear POV writing.
The instant connection felt between the two was lovely, the descriptive writing fully immerses you into their worlds.
The sexual content is HOT. sexy, well written, boundaries are explained and respected and you can feel the bond the two characters have.
I won’t say much more - it’s a must read!
This book truely is a wonderful example of people living their lives authentically and unapologetically themselves.
I’m looking forward to reading more from this author
This is not a book I'd usually go for, but thought I'd give it a try. It was a rollercoaster of emotions from the beginning and very graphic which was warned about. Nayvee is a boi who is looking for a way out of the slums and meets Trystan who is rich and everything Nayvee was looking for. This book has its good parts, but it was hard to get invested in. When i did, Rian entered the picture and it just was awkward and odd and didnt seem right to me. Overall, not a bad book, just wasn't my cup of tea
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Char Defoe has a habit of writing gritty stories (not bubbly saccharine romance stories). This was a tough read and a good read all at the same time. The characters were extremely well developed. The plot line written smoothly with me not knowing how the story would end (probably helps that I never read book blurbs bc I like the unexpected).
I read almost exclusively on Kindle Unlimited, Char Dafoe is an author I will always click "buy now."
I'm writing this review two weeks after reading it and now I want to go back and reread it.
I enjoyed this book. One thing that sets it apart from a lot of other lesfic is that both of the main characters are butch and use they/them pronouns. The book description gives you a pretty good idea of the plot so I won’t add any potential spoilers. I would recommend this book.
This is something completely different to what I usually read. For one, I don’t think I have read a book with characters that are non-binary and prefer to use they/them pronouns. When I think of they/them, I think there is more than one person involved so it certainly was a learning curve for myself. Also, I don’t normally read butch/butch books but seem to be reading more books these days where at least one of the main characters are butch.
The storyline was a really dark, raw, and emotional rollercoaster. At times, it was heartbreaking to read. The author/publisher does have a trigger warning at the beginning of the book but I decided I would continue to read on. Definitely not one for the faint-hearted.
Nayvee has been selling their body for the last five years in the slums and has decided they are giving it up, they just cannot take it anymore. The things they have gone through over the years is abysmal, to say the least. On the night they decide they are quitting they meet Trystan.
Trystan is a true gentleman. They are loving and caring and really fell head over heels with Nayvee from the moment they meet. They just felt a connection with them. Trystan wanted to get Nayvee away from the slums and to have a go at a better life. Can they both love and trust the other to make it work?
We also get to meet Rian later in the story. Also, a butch and prefers she/her pronouns. I liked her at the beginning but took an instant dislike to her for something that I could never forgive someone for, however much I loved them. To find out what that is I suggest you read the book.
The one thing that I didn’t like was the instant attraction/romance. I prefer slow-burn myself but Char has done an amazing job.
I have only read one other book by this author and that was Kitten (Book 1) and this book blows that one straight out the water. Now I need to go and read the rest of this authors work.
First, this book would not be my typical choice so I was unsure how I would feel about it. I am so glad that I took a chance. I will admit that parts of the book were difficult to read but the story was so well written that my attentiveness never once waned. The book is full of twists and turns, emotional ups and downs, raw, intriguing, heavy, steamy. And so worth reading. Kudos to the author on a daringly different story. And simply brilliant.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Beautiful rough Romance! Not the typical sweet f/f romance but an awesome one! Both main characters are non-binary and Butch, although there is a big difference between Trystan the „stone Butch“ and the boyish handsome Nayvee that identifies themself as a „soft Butch“. Nayvee and Trystan have a crazy chemistry from the start and their journey is also a wild one. Definitely a must read with some action and really well written characters.
I give this book 3.5 stars with a bent toward 4 stars (I'm indecisive on this one).
While I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, the intrigue, and all the plot, there were a few things that put me off. The first was the instant-love trope. I don't like this trope to begin with, and had I known fully well going in how much this was going to be a part of the first 30% of the book, I might not have to agreed to read it for an ARC because it does skew my opinion. So, if you don't like instant-love, steer clear, because it is kind of over the top and throughout the book.
That aside! This is not a typical romance, and I hesitate to call it romance even. I liked Trystan a lot, Nayvee got whiny and annoying in some ways, and I felt had not a whole lot of character development going on. My favorite character, hands down, was Rian, and I was really rooting for the three of them, and this was when I started to super enjoy the book (I'm also perfectly okay with how this resolves because well, it's my favorite way for characters to...um...happen? not spoiling).
There were parts of this book that felt more like an explanation of what it means to be enby and a bit of a soap box, but I think in some ways, especially for my enby friends, it needs to be there.
This book has a whole love of plot to it, which I loved. At times it felt slightly overwhelming, but it also kept me on my toes with trying to figure out when J would show back up next, although how many times can Nayvee be tortured and not have it massively affect their psyche in some ways. I am slightly disappointed in that it felt that whole story line wasn't well-resolved and not all the loose ends were tied up.
Overall, this was a good pleasant read. The story moved well, the writing was excellent, the transitions from chapter to chapter were near seamless and always left me wanting to read on. Grab a copy, check it out, and step out of your comfort zone.

Definitely a different kind of romance book. Nayvee is a character with an edge but also sweet. She is a Jade which is like a streetwalker. When she is roughed up by a John, she meets Trystan who is smitten by them. This is a non gender specific book which. is a first for me. Romance blossoms between the two. They ate looking for love but it is not easy. The characters are great and the plot good. There is sex involved along with the story. I found the book interesting and it was a good read. I received this book as an ARC but my opinions and thoughts are my own. I recommend this book to romance readers who want a different kind of romance. Char did a wonderful job
I won't go into detail about the plot as I don't want to give spoilers and the book description is detailed enough.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I began reading this, half expected just another cheesy erotica but this book gave me so much more! Yes there were some hot sex scenes but there was also so much heart and grit put into this.
It's not always an easy read as it touches on some risks sex workers face and struggles with self worth and accepting love. However, it also presents such a beautiful bond of love between the two main characters Trystan and Nayvee that had me tearing up in parts!
The main characters are a breath of fresh air as both are butches, non-binary and use they/them pronouns, not something I often see in books and it made my non-binary lesbian heart so happy to read about!
There's a few twists and it keeps you on your toes throughout, there's also an excellent use of a dual narrative with chapters switching between the main characters perspectives in a flawlessly good way.
A cracking read, great representation and a fun plot. Definitely add this to you reading list!

I received this ARC in exchange for a honest review. I loved this book! This book centered on Navyee LaCroix who is a sex worker.Navyee is non binary and uses the pronouns they/them.Navyee has worked on the streets for 5 years. They have become disappointed with their life and don’t know how to quit the work.As they are sitting on a bench Trystan Diamond sits down to join them.Sparks fly.Trystan is a non binary, rich, 40 something stone Butch who is tired of their playboy life and looking to find the perfect boi for them. I felt like this is a real description of what life is like for sex workers. The sex, violence, uncertainty of this life is heartbreaking. The love story between Navyee and Trystan is beautiful, tender and the sex is very hot! It is refreshing for me to read a book where the MC’s are 2 Butches in love.Navyee’s past comes back to haunt them in the form of their best friend Rian and complications arise. I don’t want to give anything else away! Thank you Char Defoe for ran amazing book with MC’s that not many authors have the courage to write about. I give this book a 10 out of 10.
This was definitely not your typical lesbian romance story. I have to say I liked it though. The main character Nayvee, was well written and believable. The author did a nice job of describing street life for “them”. I am not a huge fan of love at first site and the story lacked all development in the main characters attraction to each other. However, I learned a lot from this book about non-binary and butch people.
A Jade's Diamond ARC is a steamy, exciting story chronicling the challenges of a desirable prostitute who falls in love with a powerful and protective older client in a "Love at First Sight," encounter on a park bench. An interesting story that finds its way into your heart, holding you on the edge of your seat. A good bathtub read.
