Hedge Fund Course

Rate this book
A self-study course that reviews the technical and quantitative knowledge necessary to properly manage a hedge fund
Today, traditional asset managers are looking to develop their own hedge funds as alternative offerings to their clients. Hedge Fund Course presents all the technical and quantitative knowledge necessary to run a leveraged investment company, and complements the less-technical information presented in the popular, How to Create and Manage a Hedge Fund (0-471-22488-X). Filled with in-depth insight and expert advice, this book represents an executive-level educational program for money managers exploring the launch of alternative investment strategies or entering the hedge fund industry for the first time.
Stuart A. McCrary (Winnetka, IL) is a partner with Chicago Partners LLC and specializes in options, mortgage-backed securities, derivatives, and hedge funds. As president of Frontier Asset Management, McCrary managed and ran his own hedge fund before joining Chicago Partners. He received his BA and MBA from Northwestern University.

The bad: maybe the goal of the book was to analyse HFs from a bird's-eye view, focusing only on major aspects - which it does well - but I was expecting a chapter on talent, not necessarily on hiring and maintaining a team, but at least on compensation and asset allocation distribution among PMs, which is a very common topic for HF managers. Also, although it covers different investor types from pensions to foundations, endowments, HWNIs, etc, only a brief description of each is given. It would be interesting to dive deep into which kind of provisions each accept upon investment - redemption periods, expected returns. This is done to a point, but would love more detail.

The good: it's a solid book on the essentials of creating/running a HF, just like the title says. It covers all essential areas, from investor profiles to running the fund, analysing risk, performance and marketing, and the author writes in a very succint, clear way. Very good read.

A great book in which to learn about Hedge funds. The book contains a clear path and is structure in a style that gives the reader a good education level on completion of the book, In my opinion the book is best suited to individuals already working in the hedge fund industry that aim to advance through the ranks. The author has given great levels of details, and was so good that I believe it would be suitable for a university level education course. Well written, no editorial errors, the only fault is that I was not impressed with the book cover, but this is not important because the contents of the book is top level.
