Immerse yourself in the rich, fascinating history of dragons in this illustrated gift book.

Meet the fire-breathing beasts of mythology in this beautifully illustrated book brimming with scaled behemoths.

Lurking in every corner of the earth, from the deepest depths of the oceans, to the tips of the tallest mountains, even tucked beneath the very ground that you tread on, dragons watch and wait. They take many forms--sea monsters, serpents, wild cats, eagles, and they represent many different things; Gods to be revered, evil kings to be feared, wise friends, and fierce foes. So, when you accidentally step on a sinewy vine and it whips out from under your feet, or invisible forces gently fan warm air across your face, or the acrid smell of cinders pokes at the back of your throat, how will you know whether to stand and wonder, or run and hide?

Dragons have breathed fire into our minds since we could first imagine, but why do they exist in stories from every land in the world? Come in and explore Dragon World . Look into their lairs while they make shape-shifting mischief, playing with the weather and protecting earthly treasures. Soar across continents into tales as old as time. Prowl through the pages to discover rare dragon species. Find clues to track them and master how to draw them. Behold the earthly dragons of today!

5/5 ⭐

My inner child is on cloud nine right now, happiest she has ever been and the most excited, probably playing dragon princess in our childhood orchard together with our first dog, our always-faithful helper in all the games we always made up.

Nešlo to inak, ilustrácie a spracovanie mi doslove vyrazili dych.

An exploration of dragons.

What a glorious book! Dragon World is a high quality, sumptuously illustrated, beautifully presented book that will appeal to children of all ages. Indeed, the illustrations are stunning artworks in their own right and there is even a tutorial at the end of the book exemplifying how to draw a dragon yourself so that Dragon World supports art as well as reading and enjoyment.

Divided into four section exploring dragons, Dragon World is packed with dragon facts, vocabulary, brand new stories, myths and legends so that there are multiple layers of enjoyment for older children. I can see Dragon World fascinating independent readers and encouraging the less confident to do some dragon research on their own because the quality of stimulus is so interesting.

Although it is the concept of dragons that is obviously the focal point of Dragon World, so much more is packed into these pages. There’s nature and gemology, geography and history, evolution, language and art. I thought including an index so that children can learn how to access non-fiction books at the same time as enjoying Dragon World was an inspired touch. The unifying presentation of facts about appearance, dwelling, powers and traits also supports this. There’s sufficient content in Dragon World to support an entire term’s worth of learning in a KS2 classroom and to inspire and entertain individual children in the home.

I thought Dragon World was fabulous.

Dragon World authored by Tamara Macfarlane and illustrated by Alessandra Fusi

I love beautifully illustrated books, and this is exactly what drew me to this book. This book contains a mixture of dragon lore from all over the world as well as stories about dragons and references to real animals with dragon like features. It is a children's book based on how simple the writing is, but it can be enjoyed across generations since I believe young and old alike can and should be allowed to enjoy picture books.

To me, it is interesting to think that all over the world myths and stories exist about these similar looking fantasy creatures. This book explains how the myths might have originated through a mixture of ancient people's trying to explain the discovery of dinosaur bones, the then unexplained occurrence of natural phenomena, and as part of folk tales used to inspire and teach. This book also has some myths inspired stories, including from China, Japan, Wales, the Norse, and West Africa. Considering that dragons famously are thought to horde treasure, the book has a section on some of the rarest gems of the world. It mentions certain interesting facts. For example, I did not know that a Komodo Dragon has been documented to eat prey as large as water buffalo. Or that Pterodactyls were able to fly despite their huge size because their bones were hollow, similar to birds.

A wonderful book full of dragons from fairy tales to myths and legends. This is an extremely well-researched book that explores the origins of dragon history, originally created to explain dinosaurs, and how these have become enmeshed in cultures across the world. The illustrations are detailed and evocative, delighting the reader with a range of hues from fiery red dragons through to mystical greens and blues. There's lots to explore - facts, quotes, maps - and also a step-by-step instruction on how to draw your own dragon.

Aimed at MG - this book would appeal to any children who love these magical creatures!

The cover is gorgeous dragons and all the dragons are depicted in beautiful watercolors.
The entire book is illustrated with cool dragons from around the world.

While reading this book, I enjoyed thinking, "What if there were so many big and colorful dragons flying around in the vast sky?"

The appeal of dragons is that they have a gorgeous appearance reminiscent of all reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

Dragons are recognized as a myth, but there may have been dinosaurs flying around in the Mesozoic Era.

This is a beautifully illustrated nonfiction book for middle grades. It covers dragon myths from all around, but focuses on Asian and European dragons. Therr are facts about dragon characteristics, dwelling, and powers, as well as some short dragon myths/stories.
Great short read for anyone who wants to know more about dragons, and a great book to add to a dragon lover's collection.

I love this! The illustrations are vibrant and gorgeous. The range of dragon types is great. I liked how it was separated into Asian, European, and other dragons....

....Although they could have had more other. I've read less comprehensive books with several dragon-type critters missed in this book. Two places I like for my kids to read about because of their dad's background -- central America and Spain -- were botched.

Spain's representative dragon description was that it was a knock-off of England's St. George tale, which is described in riveting narrative thusly: "A knight named George slays the dragon to stop it from eating people." Spain has more than one dragon legend. Even assuming Drac truly is a ripoff of St. George's dragon and not the other way around (a quick Google search says the origin is Roman, or Libyan), why pretend to rep Spain and then just talk about the UK, again?

Central America's dragon was Amphiptere, something my Central American husband had never heard of. A quick search of Amphiptere shows...absolutely no connection to Central America. By definition, its origin is English, and it appears to have recently become some sort of regional United States dragon through some book or video game I'm unfamiliar with. I can't find any mention of its supposed connection to Africa. Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent with actual roots in Central American mythology, should feel robbed.

Other than those particulars...in general, the editor seems to have taken the day off. There are typos to be caught in the next printing. The stories were excellent and I wish there were more of them.

But even if this were just a collection of illustrations, it is still worth the price. I've really enjoyed reading this with my little hatchling.
