3.75 Stars. This was a fun historical fantasy/steampunk adventure. I have mentioned this multiple times lately but my job has been hellish to say the least and I have been working, and stressed out, way too much. With the American holiday of the 4th of July this Sunday, I was given Monday off for a 3 day weekend. I really needed this break and besides setting off some fireworks, I just want to be lazy, watch YouTube videos, and read. For reading I decided to catch up on some books I should have reviewed earlier. While I try so hard to be very timely with my reviews, sometimes things just happen. Why was this review late? Well, I actually lost this book in my Kindle library and completely forgot about it. I know you may be thinking “really?” but if you’ve seen my personal library you would absolutely understand how that is entirely possible. I don’t even want to calculate the number of just ebooks that I own and have not read yet as I might do something smart like stop buying them. Anyway, the author of this book, Diana Green, is an indie author who is also an active Goodreads reader/reviewer who was too nice to yell at me for taking so long to review this.
I’ve been pretty clear that I am not the biggest fan of short fantasy stories. Diana’s books are an exception for me because this seems to be her bread and butter and she’s often working on writing shorter fantasy stories. I’ve read one short story, one novella, and two shorter novels –including this one- that comes in around the 200 page mark, all by Diana. I’ve always been impressed by how much world building she can fit into such a small space. And I’ve wondered if she might turn some of these stories into a series since it seems like a lot of imagination used up for such a small story. This story itself has a lot of potential to be made into a series.
I’m a big historic fantasy and steampunk fan. I love the feel of the 1900’s mixed with such excitement. From horse drawn carriages, airships, magic, and in this book’s case alien creatures from other worlds, this mixture of elements is so much fun to read about.
There is a WLW romance mixed into the fantasy adventure but it is on the lighter, sweeter side. I liked the characters and the matched they made, but I did think the “I love yous” happened too quickly. This is a bit of an issue I have for most books on the shorter side, so this is not a new issue for me. I personally would have liked the relationship to have a good promise for us readers but still be a work in progress type of romance.
There were a lot of good and imaginative ideas here that I enjoyed. While there were some aspects that I might have seen before, there were things that felt new and different which I always enjoy. I mentioned that this could be a series and I really hope that it will have at least one more book. There is more to learn about one of the mains, the organization she works for, and a big mission you hope she well soon fulfill. This story can absolutely be read on its own, but if I knew for sure there would be a second book, I might have enjoyed it even more.
This book is currently available on Kindle Unlimited and I would recommend Green’s stories to fantasy fans. She has four different WLW tales and I enjoyed all of them. I was also impressed with the writing in this book. I think Green gets better every story she writes which is always nice to see. I’m looking forward to her next WLW book and hopeful we will get a sequel to this one too.
A copy was given to me for a review.
