This is story that could have been cute, but it failed in both writing and execution. First of all, this isn't an audio book. This is more like reader's theater. There is not one word of narration in this story. It is all dialogue. I think some will appreciate this. I did not. With pure scripted writing I feel like you REALLY need to have a visual to go with it. For example, there is really only one quality kiss in this story, but you couldn't tell what was going on at all. It would have been gross to have two people making slurping noises to indicate kissing was taking place, but without something like that, the only option was silence. So we get an extended moment of silence followed by enough dialogue to indicate that a kiss had taken place. Highly dissatisfying. Kisses can be epic in the midst of romantic stories. Silence is not. The format of the story as an ensemble production also hurt the overall experience of listening to the story. There's a lot of banter between lots of characters, but the banter is weak, and the characters are even weaker. Because we only hear their conversations we don't really get to know anyone all that deeply. The voice actors do a lovely yet unsatisfactory job.
As for the story ... there was promise in it, but it was too short to really hit the mark here. Amanda is a contestant on a Bachelor-like reality show that has finished filming and is now waiting to be aired. She cannot let anyone know that she was the winner and is now engaged to the Scottish bachelor and planning to run away with him to Scotland once the season finale airs. In the meantime she moves back in with her parents to lay low. While home she reconnects with Josh, the hometown guy who has had a crush on her forever. None of this is surprising. It's all in the blurb. It's not hard to guess where they want to take this story. Does Amanda run off with her Scottish hottie, or does she find a deeper love with her long-time friend? Like I say, there was promise in the story.
But ...
The writers just dropped the ball in so many ways here. First of all, I never could feel the love between Amanda and Liam, the Scot. Sure, they talked about being in love, but none of their actions showed that at all. Of course, it would be hard for them to do anything since the majority of their interactions in this book occur over the phone. We get a glimpse of the television episodes where they "fall in love," but the thing is so contrived that it is hard to feel like anything is genuine. It wasn't going to break my heart if Amanda and Liam didn't end up together. So that leaves Josh. Josh is nice. He's that typical hometown guy who shows up in these stories, always taking care of others around him, serving as a social center for the town, with (almost always ... weirdly) a talent for baking. Josh and Amanda are long-time friends, but their interactions were just average. There was nothing in their conversation that ever made me think, "Dump the Scot, and grab true love with Josh!" But then suddenly, out of the blue, there is Josh, declaring himself to an obtuse Amanda. You'd think that would throw Amanda into turmoil, but she is surprisingly clueless about this. And, probably because of the format of the performance, nothing felt dire. I never felt the depth of Josh's feelings. It never felt disastrous that Amanda was choosing Liam. I felt nothing.
All of these problems led to a horrible ending. It's not horrible because it was sad or surprising. It ended exactly like I expected. But the giant confrontation that was going to determine who Amanda ended up happened COMPLETELY OFF THE PAGE. We hear about it as a freaking flashback! This is a hugely important part of the story with all sorts of potential for drama or humor or cuteness or ... something. But we got nothing. What a disappointment! We couldn't even get a great "I choose you!" moment. So, so weak. It's too bad. I wish this could have been better. The narrators were great. I especially love Teddy Hamilton. But I have to give this two stars. It was only okay.
As a fan of The Bachelor, I really wanted to like this one, but unfortunately there were several elements that I didn't enjoy. The love triangle seemed out of place, and even though it was obvious which direction the story would go, there was nothing in the story that pushed the reader (or listener, in this case) in either direction. The major confrontation between Amanda and her fiancé happened off page, which was frustrating. Additionally, .
Not perfect, but definitely fun if you are a fan of The Bachelor! After the Fairy Tale follows a woman who returns to her home town after appearing on a Bachelor-style show as the show is airing. While there, she reconnects with a guy from high school. What was fun about this was the behind the scenes take on reality dating shows, and that definitely appealed to me as a long time viewer of the Bachelor franchise who knows a decent amount about how produced things actually are. On the other hand, the story goes into semi-cheating territory, which I didn't love. Not the worst version of that, but still could have been better. That said, this was a fairly enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours!
I never seen The Bachelor show, or anything like that before... but this story was much like that. I really enjoyed it - it was great on Audio. Full cast with sound effects and all that. Plus I LOVE Teddy Hamilton (one of the narrators). Short, sweet, light, and fun!
This was not what I was expecting at all. I really needed a cute rom com today. Thats why I picked one, or so I thought? By the description I expected a confused heroine who was in a surface reality show relationship that she was unsure about, and the hometown boy she left behind. Instead we get a heroine who is 100% in love with the reality show guy. A “hero” who pines after her, who she is constantly sending mixed messages to even though she in love with someone else. The we get a pathetic heroine who watches her fiancé screwing another woman on television (there was sound, everyone knew what happened) along with the rest of the country and all of her friends and family. This was at the end of filming, they are only two weeks away from her flying to LA to film the live finale. She still doesn’t end it. Let’s the poor hero confess that he’s always been in love with her and kissed him. Then reality show guy shows up, and and doesn’t apologize (just a “I’m sorry you’re upset, but I love you and what we have was real” insert eyeroll) she is giggling and forgives him within a literal few minutes. She BEGS him to come in a screw her. The hero shows up and she breaks his heart. 100% back in her engagement and ready for the future. She flys to LA for the taping ready for her future. Overhears something that makes her realize that the reality show guy was basically playing a part. Then and only then does she leave and goes her second choice, um I mean the hero, to tell him that she is actually in love with him. Another conversation where it’s over in a few minutes and is just so completely shallow. I couldn’t even enjoy this a little bit. I didn’t really live the way this was recorded, too many scenes where you listen to keys jiggling etc for 15 seconds before a scene even starts. I might have been able to deal with that if the plot was awful, I don’t know.
After the Fairy Tale by Terence Gray, Erin Day, and Ian Thake was a fun audiobook with a full cast that happened to include one of my favorites Teddy Hamilton. I wish he would have had a larger part since I love him so much, but Ali Ahn did a great job stealing the show as Amanda. It was really interesting listening to a book completely scripted for audio, and there were a lot of things I really loved about this. I did find it odd that there would be music playing at different times, I guess as scene breaks? and I can't say I was a huge fan of that specifically. However, I thought everything else was very well done and it made for one mesmerizing experience.
I thought the storyline was cute, and even though I'm not a fan of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, I still enjoyed having a show of that type in this audio. Whoever narrated the Scottish boyfriend Liam had a super sexy voice and I gotta say I was a fan! It is a pretty short audiobook and goes by really quickly, but I was satisfied with what I got from it. I didn't find this to be anything mind-blowing and honestly, it probably won't be anything that stays in my memory for a long time, but if you want something amusing, easy, and immersive I would recommend listening to After the Fairy Tale. It would be especially good if you want a palate cleanser, or if you are looking for a quick way to squeeze in another book for your reading goals. 😉
My first experience with an audiobook *that came to life* was a good experience but unfortunately, After the Fairy Tale, was the opposite. I had one narrator blasting my eardrums, while the other was so faint, I had to keep replaying scenes to hear what they said. This was because the scenes were supposed to represent the characters talking on the phone. There were so much unnecessary background noises and it was nearly impossible to get the speed right. It was all too much.
After the Fairy Tale reinforced my dislike of reality TV. It's fake, unrealistic, and convoluted, filled with people looking for fame and fortune with no mind to the repercussions. Emotions are unreal, and it seems that success is always at a cost. While the TV producers and executives are pushing for more ... more ... more.
In all of the drama, the one thing that shone through all of the make-believe was a small-town baker suffering from unrequited love. This Prince among the phony did not deserve to be duped and I was devastated that he settled for less than he deserved.
This was not my favourite audiobook but please don't judge by my review alone, take the time to check out other reviews, and you may find, After the Fairy Tale is perfect for you.
Amanda couldn’t believe it when her application to be a contestant on the show The Bridegroom has her selected as one of the ladies hoping to win Scotsman Liam’s heart. She has been a fan of the show for years and believed she knew what she was up for. However, no one is more surprised than Amanda when she wins and is now engaged to Liam.
Amanda has now returned to her hometown to lay low living with her parents while the show plays out on tv. Confidentiality is key and she cannot reveal anything to the people in her life. She is also trying to maintain what she now has with Liam. Being back home has its challenges but what she really is enjoying is catching up with one of her oldest school friends, Josh. He has somehow gotten way hotter than when she last saw him.
Amanda tries to navigate her way with Liam, whilst he seems completely wrapped up in tv appearances and securing himself and agent & manager. She needs to lay low but he is basking in the spotlight. It was really interesting to get an insight into what happens after the final episode. Amanda is watching Liam date other girls on the show and having moments with them that she was unaware of and in some cases not happy about.
She is now second guessing what was real and what was staged, Meanwhile, Josh is making it known that he cares more for Amanda than she realised. She is in a huge conundrum as she figures out what she wants after the fairy tale is over.
This was such a fun audio listen and features a full cast which made the experience even more enjoyable.
If you love reality TV especially dating shows then this book is the one for you. It has a lil bit of everything, Romance suspense, Drama, yummy baking, swoon worthy cast, Humour and secrets. I loved the narrating and all the lil added audio effects made this book an absolute joy to listen too. Definitely can't wait to read more from the author.
I had the pleasure of listening to this book on audible.
Oh my goodness, that was such a fun 🤩 treat! Full cast and high production (eg sound effects) which makes it more like an audible SHOW than a narrated “book”.
Great popcorn 🍿 brain 🧠 break! Good listen when you’re doing chores or driving If you’re casually interested in dating shows or watched UNREAL.
Included with audible membership.
SUMMARY: after being on the “bachelor” the “finance” returns home to hideout at her parents house while the show airs. As she watches the episodes, she starts to see her experience differently and she questions both her whirlwind romance and Romeo. At the same time, she’s enjoying connecting back with her friends from home and a simpler “off screen” Life. It’s so confusing! What does she want? Plus... theres also the local baker josh, whom she had a childhood crush on and jrs been so easy with him...
Things start to heat up with josh just as the show reaches the finale where she will be revealed as the future MRS... so what will she decide?
First I am a huge fan of full case acting out the audiobook and adding Teddy Hamilton's fabulous voice well I'm sold... except that part when a couple is kissing and we get awkward silence..which is even more deafening when we have all these other noises present...but the alternative of kissing noise is not acceptable either..
Despite being short to give us more room for development this book was fun and sweet...until the end..I thought this would be a five-star read...
-why is conflict and resolution of a triangle happening off the page? and we get some flashback explanation!!
ending ruined the whole book three authors of this book and they did this mistake?!
Woman dates a series of douches. Decides to go on a dating reality show. Thinks the guy that proposed to her is “the one” even though he was sleeping with other girls and every time he talked to her was staged. Meanwhile she sort of kind of reconnects with a man she knew growing up. After seeing him like twice for short periods he declares his love for her and she realizes she loves him as well and runs away from the show’s series finale.
No character or relationship development. She seems lost and you kinda want Josh to find someone else.
Ooookay.

Okay, I'm a sucker for a love story, but I'm a bigger sucker for Teddy Hamilton.
So, obviously he's the reason I listened and I am so glad I did.
This was fun and flirty and sweet and a nice change from the easy HEAs I'm used to reading. I liked that this was a bit different. I found it entertaining, the full cast did an outstanding job of keeping me engaged, and I will be telling all my friends to listen.
I thought the production was very well done. I'm enjoying all of the sound effects and full casts for the Audible productions. This was a fun listen that kept me interested the whole time.
Ok, so when it comes to this audiobook, I think that the story and I just weren't getting along. I honestly think that there are people out there who will love this book. For me, it felt a little too much like cheating for most of the book for it to really be my taste.
That said, I thought the audio production was super well done.
Great full audio cast to bring this story to life. I thought it was a really fun listen - especially for fans of The Bachelor!
Listeners follow along with Amanda in the aftermath of being a contestant on ‘The Bridegroom’ (which is definitely just another name for The Bachelor.)
Spoiler!?! - she’s the ‘winner’ of Liam’s heart on the show, and the story picks up as she’s sequestered in her hometown in Nebraska, living with her parents and catching up with old friends. One of those old friends is Josh, and some old feelings that rekindle might make things interesting and challenging as Amanda is engaged and confused. Things go as expected. I don’t love a love triangle, but in the world of reality TV romance some drama is expected and I wasn’t too emotionally invested either way. Josh is super sweet so I was kind of rooting for him - even though I wanted zero cheating.
Lots of great side characters, with several interesting interactions (like podcast interviews and audio of TV segments.) So overall I thought it was a fun and interesting listen. I used to love watching all of The Bachelor franchise shows, so it was a kick to get a peek into that world.
This was another one of the Audible Originals that is a short story or a novella. It is also one with a full cast that is more like a production than the normal audio version of books.
This story is somewhat of a spoof on the Bachelor Franchise and it was great to listen to this today, when the actual Bachelorette finale was tonight. It was great to see things from a different side and I enjoyed the premise quite a bit.
The funny thing is that I've read Reality Steve's website spoilers for several years and was already aware of the manipulations by the production staff, but it was fun to see the way this story plays out.
3.5 stars - I liked this so much better than the other Audible Original by these three. But I am a Bachelor franchise fan! The presentation and the sound effects were much improved along with the story line. Definitely give this one a try if you are a fan of the Bachelor.
For people who love the bachelor or “trashy” tv you may enjoy this. I would recommend the audiobook version because the production quality is well done. I was hooked from the beginning even though it was kind of predictable. Something about this type of drama is intriguing.
Good book the audio sometimes was to loud over the narration but they did amazing! I did enjoy it but the getting swept up in the show and lost in it, not knowing what’s real.... or what’s real to you pulls something away for me.
Read it to read the book version of the bachelor in the short break until the next one airs. This was cute, but don't go looking for a main character who makes good decisions or bases her entire life on anything but the next boy she's with (but also....what did I expect?)
Oh, I was angry with Amanda throughout the whole book. The story started off cute, and I was really interested in her and Liam, wanting to hear more about them. But soon I realised it wasn’t their story; it was more about Amanda not knowing what she wants and not realising the TV reality show is just that TV reality show. Don’t get me wrong; some people do end up together on these kinds of shows, but they are still shows. I don’t like how Amanda plays with both Josh and Liam and always chooses the one who gives her attention. Come on, girl, decide which one you want and don’t try to sit on both chairs. Also, Liam doesn’t seem that great; their relationship felt more forced than natural like the one with Josh. But that doesn’t give Amanda the right to do what she did. I loved the ending; it’s so cute, and I liked how it wrapped up (though it was expected).
Adorable characters, and a great cast! It's fully cast, so there's also other production sounds such as music, etc, to go along with the actor's narrative and engagement with each other. The story was definitely entertaining, and short at a less that 5 hour listen. If you're looking for a short, cute yet slightly dramatic love story, I would recommend giving it a shot.
I absolutely loved this audiobook! It was so funny, adorable, romantic, and witty. It literally made me smile so much and I kept rooting for a certain someone! I loved all the characters and how they were played by different people. The podcast show was epic!!!! Those are the kind of people I want to listen to about juicy gossip! I will say I didn’t like the Mother, sorry, but you got on my nerves hahaha! But for real, There needs to be more audiobooks like this! Reality TV show turned into an amazing story / great listen, hell yes! Highly recommend!!! Performed really well!
SO CUTE. I found myself getting upset at Amanda for her choices because I was so deeply invested in this book. 😂 If you’re a fan of the Bachelor/Bachelorette this is a must read!
