The style of writing is well above average. I quite liked reading it, but was not exactly excited by the stories. A woman finally finds the courage to hang pictures in her house. Before, her husband had forced her to store them in the garage. In one story there is a conflict between husband and wife that is quite funny. She wants him to buy and install an air conditioning unit. And he, not altogether unjustified, thinks she can and should do it herself. In the title story husband likes dirt, and she does not, it seems. The best and longest story introduces an old man who is diagnosed with cancer. And now he finds that he likes Count Basie better than Frank Sinatra. And he wants to get back to his old home.
If you have told me that Ford is one of the best liked writers of Australia (or even the world) I would have found no reason to doubt you. But in fact this little book has no reviews and no ratings at all. Quite amazing. (I finally found a book exchange in China where I picked this one up together with another book that has tens of thousands of ratings. I am looking forward to comparing them.)
