Rules to Break #2B

Risse im Eis: buch 2: Omegaverse Hockey Romanze

Rate this book
Hockey was everything to them both… until they met each other.

All Keenan Avali wants to do is play hockey. It doesn’t matter that he’s an alpha, he’s got no interest in dominating anywhere but on the ice.

When Cartwright Johnson joins the Hell’s Flames, he expects to play hard to compensate for being an omega who dared to pursue a professional hockey career. After his last team traded him, he is not making the mistake of falling for a teammate ever again. He’s sure he’s got the control to keep his pants on and his heart closed... until he meets Keenan Avali.

An omega can't trust an alpha, much less one as hot as Avali, but nobody can fail to see they play together like they were made for it. But for how long can they be the perfect teammates on ice when they can't stand to look at each other off it?

N.J. Lysk (pronouns: whatever) is a queer one—in almost every sense of the word—for whom stories have always been their one true home. She studied linguistics and literature (which is to say, someone offered him a genuine excuse to read professionally) and ended up teaching, but writing is their one true love.

Addicted to angst, enamoured of mpreg and always ready to try a new kink (in a book, that’s it!) she became hooked into the Omegaverse through fanfic (but he doesn't have the patience to write other people's characters) and has recently expanded from werewolves to hockey players.

I never read a story with true mates who worked hard so they would NOT be together, my head was confused. I wanted them together and all they did was fight against it.
Keenan was quite oblivious to the whole mate thing, he never felt something for a guy and didn’t want to start. Carry’s first priority was hockey, now with his real mate before him he has to work hard to disguise his feelings and hold up all kinds of shields to protect himself. Walls don’t work on ice, he has to know where Keenan is to play his best game.

Keenan is a bit short-sighted. He kind of wants to ignore the true pair thing. Carry is at a disadvantage; he feels everything and has to work hard to suppress.
Keenan understands some, he feels too, but hard-headed as he is, he is in denial.
Their bond is strong, Keenan doesn’t even know how strong because Carry doesn’t let him see or feel everything. They can take advantage of it on ice, together they can be invincible, and no one will find out!

Most of the time Carry feels largely screwed by the universe!
When his heat strikes again one message is enough.

It’s all about not opening up too much because it will overwhelm the other, who definitely can’t find out.

I’m a HUGE fan of alpha omega dynamic, and I’m even more turned on by the scent ‘thing’. Cracking Ice is full of it! I can’t get enough of it all!
This story gives me all different kind of feelings, I love the unbearable tension and their hot sexual encounters, I hate the aloof they put between them, and I love they struggle with it.
After this second installment, I felt even more connected with both men.
Luckily the size of every part of this series is manageable, but it makes me restless not to know what will happen next. With Cracking Ice it can go every direction.
Overall a well-written story, I love the fact I wasn’t head over heels with both men, they had to work hard to conquer my heart, I do want to get to know and understand them better.
I love the content and I love all the focus to the real-pair issues.

Second episode is a little better than first one. I still like the characters. This time they are getting more physical but the emotions is still lacking. Well, not entirely true. There is emotions, and I appreciate it very much, even if is not exactly love what they feel for each other. The story is really good and I want to keep reading this, but the way is serialized it bothers me a lot. It feel like a very big book cut into pieces. I hope at least to get a certain feeling of ending in the next parts, but at this point, I’m a little mad about it and I will stop reading for a while. I will get back to it, because as I said, I do think the story and characters are really good.

Going into Heat was not in the plan, but Keenan is the only unbonded alpha on the team and their in a hotel before a game and the rooms are not scent isolated. Carry needs help even if it's from someone he's not really willing to trust.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

The first episode in this series introduced us to Keenan and Carry and their worlds of being an alpha and an omega. Keenan has long insisted that he is not attracted to men and the mere presence of Carry has been unsettling. The men are linked on the ice, as they can feel and read each other, and ever since Carry went into heat that has only gotten more intense. But they really don’t want to have anything to do with each other off the ice.

There are a lot of politics surrounding alphas and omegas and Carry trusted the wrong person on his last team and he now can’t trust any alpha. Keenan isn’t aware of what happened and he thinks that Carry just doesn’t like him even after Keenan got Carry through his heat. So, the men don’t like each other, yet they can’t stay away.

I like the idea of this series, but there is something off in the delivery for me. I often feel like the characters talk in circles and what should be presented as fairly simple takes pages and pages to get across and even then it’s not always clear.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Keenan and Carry are still trying to figure out things on the off the ice. Carry is still holding back from Keenan for obvious reasons due to the way omega's are treated while Keenan is just trying to, make it work with the way Carry pushes, mixed signals at him. When things take a different turn for the two how will the coup with this new sign that that are a true pair? The fight is still on with Carry to prove himself with the hockey league. Can't wait for ep 3 this is getting intense with this unwilling duo.

Great plays on the ice, interesting interpersonal plays, more confusion for both the protagonists as they try to keep their game on the ice and out of the bedroom. The fight against instinct and the perceived need to play their best game, since hockey represents everything for both of them , still keeps front and center in the plot. So they have to work hard to find a good balance. Just what that balance may be remains to be seen.
Second installment, leading up to more, greater problems foreseeable.

Part two and the world and society building in this story is all the more riveting! I love how the author created her own version of omegaverse with intricate social and personal rules. In the middle of it all are two MCs that are amazing to follow. I love how much the story concentrates on feelings and their development. Can't wait to see where it goes next!

4.8 out of 5

The last bit annoyed me because the two MCs finally agreed on something and one idiot wants to turn back on it. But thats riskier than their original AGREED UPON plan. Everything else was great!

This is the second episode in this series and the intensity and angst between the two main characters just keeps getting better. I definitely think this series is getting better with each book
