Sunny Side Up #2

Muffin But Murder

Rate this book
In this small town, there’s muffin but murder…

Sunny Charles has only just gotten used to running her aunt’s café. It’s been a learning curve, what with the moody customers, the eggs over easy, and now, her chef leaving for a baking course for five full days. With him gone, she’s in charge of everything ‘food’—and cooking is not her strong suit.

Sunny’s got to hire outside help, but when she goes over to her aunt’s best friend’s house looking for advice, she walks in on a dead body instead. And the murderer, shrouded in darkness, mid-escape… If only she’d seen his face. Sunny’s convinced that she knows whodunit, but with the tension mounting in the small coastal town of Parfait, Sunny’s got to decide what’s most important to her: her friends or her life.

Can Sunny solve the case before the real murderer stops her? And who are the dark shadowy figures that seem to be following her everywhere? Find out in the second installment of the cozy Sunny Side Up series.

The second book in the Sunny Side Up series found me annoyed with main character Sunny. She seemed clueless with how to expose the treasure map she found as I knew right away the symbol was meaningful. She also seemed very careless in this edition walking around reading the notebook from the murder victim in public knowing that people are after it and was even warned to only give to her aunt and no one else. When encouraged to give the information to the police, she keeps refusing leading to one mishap after another that almost gets her killed. I hope she will get some redemption in the next book as she seemed too helpless in this one.

I recieved an ARC of this book. This was a nice light, fun read. It is a feel good book with lovely characters. For the most part the characters seem like genuine good people. I love their interactions with each other and you can tell they truly care for one another. There is a wonderful, goofy dog as well. I love a good murder mystery but to me the mystery of the dog was even better. I really wanted to know more about him and to figure out where he came from even more than I wanted to figure out the murder.

Can’t do it. She lost me at “at best I’m shy and at worst an introvert.”

1. Many readers are introverts, so who do you think your audience is?
2. Not all introverts are shy. Introvert does not equal antisocial.
3. Extroverts can be shy.
4. People need to stop using introvert as their excuse for main characters who are idiots when speaking to other people.

Boy bye.

Okay the Sunny Side Up Series is very good, but one thing about this book I didn't understand is the title. Nowhere in the book were muffins mentioned, used or anything. So I'm a bit confused about the title.

Sunny is continuing to run her aunt Rita's cafe while she off on a long ago needed vacation. In Muffin but Murder Sunny must contend with Nick going away to brush up on his pastry skills. Her first task is to find a chef to help her out while Nick is gone. Simple enough right? I mean Nick is only going to be gone for a couple of days, two weeks top, what could go wrong. Well for one Sunny has no idea who would be a good replacement for Nick and when she reaches out to her aunt for assistance she needs to be told to relax and it will work out. Her aunt has her reach out to Pamela who has just come back to town after leaving years ago with her husband. The only problem is Sunny finds more than she bargains for when she finds Pamela dead. Now Sunny is left with a notebook that is supposed to help her find a new chef but instead sends her on a wild goose chase. Will Sunny find a chef to replace Nick while he's gone, will she be caught up in Pamela's murder find out in Muffin but Murder.

One thing about Sunny that I hope improves is her lack of confidence. So far she's gone to her aunt with every issue instead of taking charge and reaching out to others to help solve her problems. Her aunt has even said I need this vacation, I don't want to keep thinking about the cafe. So I do hope Sunny improves in that aspect.

GOOD BOOK, BUT PREFERRED BOOK 1.

SERIES PREMISE: In this series we follow Sunny Charles who is running her Aunt's cafe while she's away on a cruise. Sunny is also looking after her Aunt's cat Bodger in Parfait, Florida.
In this book: Nick, Sunny's Chef reminds her that he's taking a quick leave for a week to do a pastry course. Sunny totally forgot to hire a replacement. Not to worry, her Aunt recommends a woman who knows a lot of good chef's looking for short-term work. The problem? Once Sunny arrives at the woman's home it's to find her dead. Now what will Sunny do? And, arguably more importantly, who killed this woman?

THOUGHTS: I love this series so far over-all and do think I will continue on with it as well as other works by Rosie A Point. In saying that I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one. There was a lot of humor in the first book which, now that Sunny has gotten to know the cafe and Parfait better was no longer there. In saying that, I do love Parfait as the setting and getting to know everyone in the cafe. I do wish we saw Sunny actually cook. All in all a good refreshing short cozy.

4 Stars

The Chef, Nick, reminded Sunny that he is leaving the next day for the baking class he clear with her some time ago. She had forgotten all about it and never hired a replacement chef! She needed to contact her Aunt Rita, who was on a vacation cruise with friends, and see what she would recommend before the Sunny Side Up Café had to close down for the next 5 days of his class! Her aunt told her to let Pamela Brooke, one her friends, advise her.

Pamela had recently come to Sunny’s defense when two nasty customers were gossiping about Sunny breaking up Nick’s marriage, which was totally untrue. So Sunny was okay with seeking Pamela’s advice. However, when she goes to see her, she hears a scream for Help and she runs in to find Pamela’s body! She catches a glimpse of a huge figure in a hooded black coat escaping, but it was too dark to see his face. Pamela kept a journal that may have some helpful information. But will it lead instead to danger? And will the murderer come after Sunny to keep her quiet… permanently?

This was another fun adventure with Sunny running her aunt's cafe, and her aunt was basically phoning her part in due to being on vacation. Although Sunny did finally get why her aunt needed such a long break, because running the diner was no walk in the park even though she enjoyed it. There were quite a few suspects, and I honestly didn't know who to trust or suspect. I suspected one person kind of early, then I just read and let myself go down the red herring paths to see where they led.

It was pretty funny that grumpy Bodger cat actually got along with a dog that'd been hanging around Sunny's house. The final outcome for the dog was pretty cute. The showdown was pretty cool, and Sunny got the upper hand (I always enjoy it when the sleuth is well-prepared!) on seeing the perp brought down. I wonder if Aunt Rita will ever come home? I enjoy her and Sunny's conversations and would love for her to be around more. Maybe she's going to be like the elusive Charlie was with the Angels, lol. I'll be borrowing the next book on KU when it comes out!

Sunny is still running the café with Didi while Aunt Rita is still on her cruise. Nick had been accepted into a week-long cooking class so Sunny needed a temporary chef. After talking with Aunt Rita, she contacted Pamela for a list of chefs she could talk to fill-in. Unfortunately, she walks in on a dead body. She is given a red book with information in it and little does she know, contains information a lot of people want to get their hands on. Join Sunny as she tries to decipher why this book is so important that it is worth killing over. Bodger, the cat, has a new friend, a dog, named Fudge that is hanging around the house. The cat and dog are so cute together and a joy to watch play.

This is such an enjoyable read! The characters are well rounded and well developed. I highly recommend not only this book but also the whole series. A perfect cozy mystery with just the perfect amount of humor, mystery, intrigue, quirky characters, and adventure that will keep any reader completely engaged.

Book 2 of the Sunny Side Up Cozy Mystery series.

Well it's been about a month since Sunny has been running her aunts' cafe and she still is running into problems. Her chef is going away for five days and she needs someone to fill in. That was something she forgot to schedule. Now in a bind she calls her aunt who gives her the name of a friend who can help her find someone.

Since everything goes so sunny for Sunny she finds the friend has just been fatally attacked. Now Sunny must tell her aunt about this. At the request of her aunt Sunny begins to look into the murder.

Let's recap: Sunny been here about a month. There's been two murders and the cafe been closed for what seems almost a total of two weeks, maybe more. The aunt's been cruising all this time.

Will the aunt ever come home? (If it was me, I wouldn't, I'd stowaway on the ship forever.) How many more people will die for Sunny to find? (I'd move out of town.) Will the cafe survive with Sunny as the manager?

Sunny is in a bind. She forgot that Nick was going to be gone for a week at a baking class. Now she needs to find a chef ASAP! Her aunt Rita tells her to ask Pamela Brooke who has quite a few contacts in Parfait. When Sunny gets to Pamela's house, she looks in the mailbox as instructed for a list of possible chefs. Then she hears a call for help inside the house! She finds Pamela on the floor lying in blood! Movement catches her eyes and she sees a massive figure in an over-sized black coat, hood up running through the house and escaping. Aunt Rita asks Sunny to 'snoop around' to see if she can find the killer. There are a few people that are acting rather strangely...including Pamela's own sister and ex-husband! I don't recommend reading series books out of order, so if you have not read Murder Over Easy, it really helps to know the main characters, and even some of the minor characters. If you are looking for some deep twisted mystery, this is not it. It is a light, mostly fun little romp along a sunny seaside town. Close knit and quirky individuals. Yes, there is an unfortunate murder and yes, Sunny, despite having better sense, undertakes solving the crime. The victim is supposed to leave her a list of chefs to contact while her regular chef is out of town, but she encloses the list in the red journal that she was never without. Pamela (the victim) has left instructions that the journal be given to Sunny's Aunt Rita. who is still on a cruise, and encourages Sunny to solve the mysterty.

My fault for not reading #1 before #2, but there were enough reasons to criticize this book on its own.

The characters were all vapid and immature. The main character was stupid for investigating without informing and consulting with the police.

Is it the fault of the editor or the narrator that there were grammatical errors in the audiobook narration? It is certainly the fault of the narrator to TWICE refer to a suspect's bald pate as a bald PATAY, as in a culinary term for a spread.

What's with the title? Muffins were never mentioned in the book, although some action took place in a coffee shop.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and will switch to that version when it's added to Goodreads.

Sunny manages to find trouble in unusual places. Forgetting that Nick planned to be out of town for a baking class leaves her short a chef and closed for at least a day. Her search for a replacement chef leads to a pleasant encounter with an old friend to her aunt, and a bunch of unpleasant folks who are hungry for treasure, followed by more unpleasantness

Fighting rumors and finding her own way is proving to be a big challenge for Sunny

A fun mix of love and loyalties, followed by the falling out of her friends

Ni is soon to be ex-wife is a little crazy if you ask me but you need all kinds to keep a series interesting.

I did find it a little hypocritical when she told Alexi he needed to come forward and not let something from his past stop him from doing the right thing - she literally won’t go to the police because of how her ex-husband treated her!

I keep wondering how long this cruise of her aunts is?’ I’d love to be gone for a month, or two, or three!! And for such a quiet town there sure is a lot going on!

Didi and Karl are super cute. Wondering when her and Nick will be officially put together.

Book 2 in the Sunny Side Up series did NOT disappoint.

Sunny is back - and so is her forgetfulness. Nick, Sunny Side Café's chef, has requested some time off to enhance his craft; however, Sunny has forgotten to find a replacement while he is gone.

When Sunny contacts her aunt (who is STILL on that cruise), she encourages Sunny to contact her friend Pamela. When Sunny arrives to seek Pamela's help, she finds Pamela dead.

What is going on? Why is Sunny in the middle of another murder? And will she help solve the crime before she is the next victim?

This cozy mystery has it all - murder, friendship, a gruffy cat, and a mysterious dog. All we're missing is a bit of romance.

I love a good cozy mystery that can captivate my attention the moment I start reading and this one does just that. Suspense, twists, turns, a bit of humor, and murder are woven throughout the story and keep you turning the pages waiting to see what happens. The characters are fun, engaging and intriguing and easy to get to know. A great read for fans of cozy mysteries.

Fun Culinary Cozy
After surviving s devastating divorce (hubby was not what he seemed) Sunny went to help her aunt Rita run her restaurant while starting over. Her aunt's away and she is in charge. When one of her aunt's friends dies, she is determined to find out why and who-dun-it, and manages to...with the help of her friends.

I love this new series! This is the second book. It’s an easy read. I really enjoy the small Florida beach town setting. The characters are engaging and the plots are interesting. Lots of red herrings and a surprise ending. I would recommend reading the first book to get to know Sunny’s background and personality. Can’t wait to meet Aunt Rita. She sounds like a fun character!

This was such a fun read. This is the second in the series and unfortunately I have not read the first book yet. I plan to do that shortly. I really enjoyed this book. It was light hearted and so much fun. I enjoyed the characters and the small town feel of the book. I look forward to more from this author.

Sunny is concerned that the Sunny Side Up Cafe is on the brink of chaos. Her Aunt’s suggestion is to contact Pamela. Instead of the help she needs, she finds a body. However, a journal leads to clues and danger. I especially liked how Sunny is finding a new and stronger life after her lowest point.

Really enjoying this series, lots going on and suspenseful moments along with twists and a variety of quirky characters, it can be a bit madcap at times but has me smiling. I think Sunny tends to stumble on answers more than actually work them out. She's forthright in her opinions and honest, sometimes that gets her into trouble but at least others know. Great read.

Sunny is just starting to get comfortable with running her Aunt's cafe when her chef is leaving to go to a baking course and she forgot to hire a temporary chef. After talking to her Aunt she goes to her friends house she finds her dead but a note book in the mail box. Her aunt asks her to investigate and it gets a little edgy. Great story and enjoyable reading

Cute read

It's a fun quick series to read. She steps on toes thinking people are guilty but seems to be able to patch things up in the end. Fudge is a sweet addition to the series.

Death and a Notebook

When Pamela Brooke gets murdered, she leaves a notebook for Sunny to be given to her Aunt Rita. What is the significance of the notebook? Why would someone want to murder her? Another thrilling book in the series which was rivetting.

As ePub.

Sunny finds her aunt's friend dead when she visits to ask about a temporary chef for the cafe. She has to identify and eliminate suspects since the cops aren't getting anywhere.

I like the side character Didi.
