Yrsa Sigurðardóttir is an Icelandic writer, of both crime-novels and children's fiction. She has been writing since 1998.
Her début crime-novel "Last Rituals" published in the US in 2007, and the UK in January 2008 was translated into English by Bernard Scudder, and is book 1 of the Thóra Gudmundsdóttir series.

Yrsa Sigurðardóttir graduated from high-school in 1983, finished a B.Sc. in civil engineering from the University of Iceland in 1988 and M.Sc in the same field from Concordia University in Montreal in 1997.

Yrsa now works as a civil engineer for the company Fjarhitun, as well as being a writer.

In 2000 the Icelandic department of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) awarded Yrsa for her book Við viljum jólin í júlí (We Want Christmas in July).

Yrsa lives in the Reykjavík suburb of Seltjarnarnes. She is married with two children.

Unul dintre cele mai bune thriller citite anul acesta, cu un final neașteptat și un caz plin de surprize și secrete. Un caz de crimă, o gașca de prieteni cu secrete întunecate, o dispariției misterioasă, un copil găsit într-un loc în care nu ar trebuii să fie și un final neașteptat sunt rețeta perfectă pentru un thriller bun.

On a jagged, bleak lava field stands the Gallows Rock. Once a place of execution, it is now a tourist attraction. Until a man is found hanging from it... The nail in his chest proves it wasn't suicide. But then a further puzzle awaits: a 4 year old boy is found alone in the murder victim's flat. He doesn't seem to have any link to the victim, his parents cannot be found, and his drawings show he witnessed something terrible. As detective Huldar hunts the killer, and child psychologist Freyja looks for the boy's parents, the mystery unfolds: a story of violence, entitlement, and revenge.

I want to note firstly that yes this is a series but yes you can absolutely read this as a standalone if you wish. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is one crime series that I'm happy to commit myself to (waiting anxiously for each English translation haha). I like both Huldar and Freyja and I quite enjoy their 'will they hook up or won't they' relationship. Although I did feel that novel had less character and relationship development in comparison to the previous books in the series. This book contains another puzzling crime that will keep readers guessing until the end. There are many clever plot twists to keep readers engaged.
I highly recommend this novel for any reader that enjoys detective crime stories.

Είναι από τα βιβλία που δεν μπορώ να κατατάξω σε κατηγορία, δεν ξέρω αν είναι αστυνομικό ή κοινωνικό. Υπάρχει νεκρός, υπάρχει και αστυνομία που διερευνά το έγκλημα και ψάχνει να βρει τον δολοφόνο, ωστόσο το κοινωνικό μήνυμα που περνά είναι πολύ σημαντικό για να μην του δοθεί η πρέπουσα σημασία. Τείνω τελικά να πιστέψω ότι οι Ισλανδοί για κάποιο λόγο αδυνατούν να γράψουν ένα απλό κοινωνικό μυθιστόρημα, πρέπει να εμπλέξουν και κάτι από έγκλημα μέσα ώστε να μπορεί με κάποιο τρόπο να θεωρηθεί αστυνομικό. Το ίδιο παθαίνω και με τα βιβλία του έτερου Ισλανδού, του Ιndridason, τα παίρνω για αστυνομικά και καταλήγω να τα συστήνω για κοινωνικά.
Τέλος πάντων, επί του θέματος. Τόσο ο Χούλνταρ όσο και η Φρέιγια μου είναι εξαιρετικά συμπαθείς. Πάρα πολύ μου άρεσε επίσης και η Έρλα, δεν θα ήθελα φυσικά να συναναστρέφομαι μαζί της αλλά σαν χαρακτήρας μου άρεσε πολύ, ειδικά οι αντιδράσεις που προκαλεί στους γύρω της μου δημιούργησαν ευθυμία. Επίσης, η Ισλανδία έχει σαν χώρα αυτό το "κάτι διαφορετικο" από τις υπόλοιπες, όποιος έχει δει λίγες φωτογραφίες καταλαβαίνει για τι μιλάω. Σου λέει για παράδειγμα ότι το πτώμα βρίσκεται κρεμασμένο από έναν βράχο σε ένα πεδίο λάβας και αυτόματα το μυαλό σου γεμίζει από εικόνες.

Είναι καλογραμμένο με την πλοκή να εξελίσσεται αργά και όχι αγχωτικά, καθόλου βαρετά ωστόσο. Δεν υπάρχουν αναλυτικές περιγραφές βίαιων σκηνών εγκλήματος, δεν υπάρχει κάτι που θα μπορούσε να σου φέρει ανακάτωμα στο στομάχι όπως συμβαίνει με πολλά άλλα αστυνομικά μυθιστορήματα, όσα όμως πρέπει να ειπωθούν υπάρχουν μέσα στο κείμενο. Δεν μπορώ να πω πολλά και δεν θα το κάνω, σε αυτού του είδους τα μυθιστορήματα υπάρχει πάντα ο κίνδυνος μια λάθος λέξη να αποκαλύψει τμήματα της πλοκής που δεν θα έπρεπε. Το μόνο που μένει να πω είναι ότι πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο που μου άρεσε πολύ, όσοι επιθυμείτε ένα ελαφρύ αστυνομικό με δυνατό κοινωνικό μήνυμα ρίξτε του μια ματιά.

This was a page-turning (or what do you call it when it's an audiobook?) crime novel. The Children's House series is fabulous, and I recommend reading it from the beginning. I can't wait to read book 5 now.

Gallows Rock it’s a fourth instalment in Freya and Huldar series and I was waiting with anticipation to start reading it.

In Yrsa’s latest book we follow the police team investigating a murder of a wealthy man but the case gets quickly complicated when they discover a young child alone in his flat. While searching for a killer they need to find boy’s parents who seemed disappear as well.

As expected with the author’s books the story is gripping and dark, incredibly well written and full of twists. It was a very absorbing read that kept my mind constantly busy trying to figure out a link between boy and the murdered man. The plot itself is definitely less gruesome and slower in pace than in the previous book but nonetheless still very engaging.

I only wished we could see more of Huldar and Freya’s relationship but I guess I have to wait till the next book in the series.

I love Yrsa’s books and and this one was no exception. Highly recommended.

Με μια ιστορία δυνατή έρχεται στο τέταρτο βιβλίο της σειράς η αγαπημένη Ύρσα,που μπορεί να μην είναι πρωτότυπη σαν αντικείμενο αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων,είναι όμως μια σύγχρονη μάστιγα που αφορά πολλούς ανθρώπους και όλο και πιο τακτικά φιγουράρει στα δελτία ειδήσεων.
Παρόλα αυτά,μου έλειψε η ένταση και η αγωνία που συνήθως συνοδεύουν παρόμοια θέματα,η κάλυψη όσον αφορά στο παιδί που είναι μέρος της ιστορίας,θα μπορούσε να έχει απογειώσει την αφήγηση,και η ανατροπή του τέλους,αν και είχε τις προδιαγραφές να είναι συγκλονιστική,ήταν οριακά αδιάφορη-για μένα τουλάχιστον,που είμαι φανατική λάτρης της συγγραφέως.Μου άφησε την αίσθηση της διεκπεραίωσης,κάτι που ελπίζω να είναι παροδικό και να επανέλθει η γραφή της στα πρότερα υψηλά επίπεδα.

While recently back from a trip to Iceland, I wanted to keep the feeling alive with yet another great thriller series (see some of my reviews for two other authors I read during the prep time for this trip, as well as the early novels in this series). Yrsa Sigurðardóttir pens an intense fourth novel in this collection, which balances a police procedural with the banter of an odd protagonist pairing. A man is found hanging at Gallows Rock, a former place for executions. The victim is not known to police, but they are surprised by what they discover at his flat. Detective Huldar and child psychologist, Freyja, begin their investigation, which takes on some troubling twists in the hunt to piece things together. Time is of the essence and nothing is making sense. Yrsa Sigurðardóttir delivers a chilling story that will likely captivate the reader’s attention.

Gallows Rock was once a place of execution that brought Icelanders out along the lava field outside Reykjavik. Now, it is a tourist attraction, which is how a man was found hanging. While some might posit that it was suicide, the large nail rammed through his chest erases that possibility. The authorities arrive to determine what happened and try to identify the victim. He raises no red flags when his name is run through the databases. However, a trip to his flat raises new concerns.

When the police arrive to look around, they discover a new and baffling concern. A four-year-old boy is inside, alone. The boy appears to have no connection to the victim, but his parents are also not forthcoming. Detective Huldar is called in to lead the investigation and will need the assistance of child psychologist, Freyja. The boy has no idea where his parents might have gone or how to reach them, but has provided some gory hand-drawn pictures that prove the little one has witnessed something horrible.

Attempting to find the parents and piece the two scenes together, Huldar and Freyja will have to work efficiently to ensure nothing is missed. It’s a gripping time that leaves little time to ponder. Could the parents have been other victims of a mysterious killer? What does all this mean? Huldar and Freyja are on edge as they try to find more answers and put the questions at bay, unaware of the horrors that await them. Yrsa Sigurðardóttir sends chills up the reader’s spine with this story!

Yrsa Sigurðardóttir is the third Icelandic thriller writer who adds a flavouring to this wonderful country. I have loved Scandinavian noir thrillers and this series fits the bill. The narrative proves intense from the opening pages, with a brutal murder that sets the scene for a gripping story. The addictive nature of the story keeps the reader wondering what awaits them, while also making sure to leave them unsettled. Characters provide flavouring to ensure the story is relevant, as Sigurðardóttir depicts them in a way to keep the reader curious. There is also some ongoing development of the protagonists. Plot points help keep things from being too predictable and ensures the twists are plentiful. I am curious about what Yrsa Sigurðardóttir has with the remaining stories in the series.

Kudos, Madam Sigurðardóttir, for this story that has me feeling edgy.

Η Ισλανδία είναι ένα μέρος που πάντα τράβαγε το ενδιαφέρον μου, έτσι όποτε πετυχαίνω βιβλίο Ισλανδού ή Ισλανδής συγγραφέα, δεν το αφήνω να περάσει απαρατήρητο. Συγκεκριμένα, η συγγραφέας Yrsa Sigurdardóttir είναι μια πολύ ταλαντούχα συγγραφέας που μεταφέρει με ακρίβεια την Ισλανδία στον αναγνώστη ή αν θέλετε τον αναγνώστη στην Ισλανδία. Καθώς το τμήμα είναι υποστελεχωμένο, λόγω της επίσκεψης του Κινέζου υπουργού, είναι πολύ δύσκολο να προχωρήσουν οι έρευνες με το ρυθμό που θα ήθελαν οι αστυνομικοί. Οι δουλειές είναι πάρα πολλές ενώ οι άνθρωποι που μπορούν να τις αναλάβουν είναι πολύ λίγοι. Με το θέμα να γίνεται γνωστό στο κοινό και να παίρνει διαστάσεις, η πίεση που ασκείται στους αστυνομικούς από τους ανωτέρους τους είναι μεγάλη, με αποτέλεσμα να υπάρχουν εντάσεις και να δουλεύουν όλοι τους εξαντλητικές ώρες.

Για άλλη μια φορά η Ισλανδή συγγραφέας μας δείχνει το ταλέντο της δημιουργώντας ένα εξαιρετικό μυστήριο που περιβάλει το έγκλημα με το οποίο καταπιάνεται η έρευνα. Τίποτα δεν είναι ξεκάθαρο, καθώς από την αρχή υπάρχουν πολλά κενά και πολλά αναπάντητα ερωτήματα. Αν όμως φτάσει κανείς στο τέλος του βιβλίου θα καταλάβει πως όλα αυτά τα μικρά και ασήμαντα για τα οποία διάβαζε σε όλο το βιβλίο, είναι κομμάτια ενός παζλ που ολοκληρώνεται στις τελευταίες κυριολεκτικά σελίδες. Ερωτήματα δε μένουν αναπάντητα, όσο κι αν φαίνεται πως θα αργήσουν να απαντηθούν και αυτή είναι η μαγεία της γραφής της. Όλη η υπόθεση είναι αριστοτεχνικά δομημένη για να οδηγήσει στην κορύφωση και στη λύση του μυστηρίου με τρόπο τέτοιο που να είναι όλα ξεκάθαρα και να μη μείνει καμία απολύτως απορία.

Όπως σε πολλά μυθιστορήματα του είδους, βλέπουμε θέματα που χρήζουν της προσοχής μας. Ένα από αυτά που συναντάμε στο συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο είναι ο η θέση της γυναίκας σε μια κατά βάση ανδροκρατούμενη δουλειά, όπως για παράδειγμα είναι η Έρλα, η προϊσταμένη του Χούλνταρ, αλλά και η Λίνα, η νεαρή ασκούμενη. Η αντιμετώπιση που έχουν από τους συναδέλφους τους έχει να κάνει καθαρά με το φύλο τους αλλά και με τη θέση τους. Είναι πολύ καλύτερη η αντιμετώπιση που έχει η Έρλα από τους υφισταμένους της, μιας και είναι ουσιαστικά το αφεντικό τους, από εκείνη που έχει η Λίνα από το αφεντικό και τους συναδέλφους της.

Το δεύτερο είναι η έκθεση της γενετήσιας πράξης χωρίς τη συγκατάθεση και των δύο εμπλεκομένων. Μια κρυφή κάμερα που βιντεοσκοπεί εν αγνοία της γυναίκας που είναι στο πλάνο και που φυσικά και πάλι εν αγνοία της κοινοποιείται είτε σε ένα μικρότερο κύκλο είτε στο ίντερνετ. Ένα βασικό κομμάτι του βιβλίου περιστρέφεται γύρω από το συγκεκριμένο θέμα, όπως και το θέμα του βιασμού και κατά πόσο ξεκάθαρα μπορεί να δείξει ένα βίντεο αν υπήρχε συγκατάθεση ή όχι. Διαβάζοντας το αντίστοιχο κείμενο στο βιβλίο και συγκεκριμένα το κομμάτι που ο δικηγόρος της αστυνομίας αποκρούει όλα τα επιχειρήματα που φέρνουν ο Χούλνταρ και η Έρλα, καταλαβαίνω ακόμα περισσότερο πόσο δύσκολο είναι να αποδειχθεί ένας βιασμός. Οι συνήθεις ερωτήσεις είναι του στυλ «γιατί δε φώναξε όχι αν δεν ήθελε;» ή «γιατί τον ακολούθησε στο σπίτι του, αν δεν ήθελε να γίνει κάτι τέτοιο;» ή ακόμα και το σχόλιο «αν δεν έπινε τόσο πολύ, δε θα της συνέβαινε αυτό». Κανείς όμως δεν μπαίνει στον κόπο να πει «γιατί αυτός επέμενε όταν είδε ότι δεν είχε θετική ανταπόκριση;». Και γιατί θα πρέπει μια γυναίκα να αποδείξει ότι όταν λέει «όχι» το εννοεί πραγματικά;

Το τρίτο θέμα και μια επίσης μεγάλη μάστιγα της εποχής μας είναι η ενδοοικογενειακή βία. Όλοι λένε πως υπάρχουν οργανισμοί, ειδικοί και εθελοντές που μπορούν να βοηθήσουν τους ανθρώπους που κακοποιούνται από τον ή τη σύντροφό τους. Αυτό που δυσκολεύεται κάποιος να καταλάβει είναι πως οι άνθρωποι αυτοί ζουν υπό το καθεστώς της ψυχολογικής βίας. Τους έχει γίνει ξεκάθαρο πως αν μιλήσουν, αν ζητήσουν βοήθεια, είτε οι ίδιοι είτε κάποιος δικός τους, όπως για παράδειγμα τα ίδια τους τα παιδιά, κινδυνεύουν να πάθουν κακό. Οπότε μπαίνουν σε ένα φαύλο κύκλο και απλά προσπαθούν να μην εξοργίσουν τον βασανιστή τους.

Πέρα από την αγωνία για το έγκλημα και το μυστήριο που καλούνται να λύσουν τόσο οι ήρωες του βιβλίου όσο και οι αναγνώστες, έχει αρκετή τροφή για σκέψη. Καλεί τον αναγνώστη να αναρωτηθεί αν υπάρχει κάτι που θα μπορούσε να κάνει ώστε να μην συμβαίνουν τέτοια περιστατικά. Η παιδεία είναι ένα μεγάλο μέρος της λύσης. Και αν υπάρχει κάποιος που πιστεύει πως όλα αυτά συμβαίνουν μόνο στις βόρειες χώρες που οι άνθρωποι είναι πιο κρύοι όπως και το κλίμα τους, τότε κάνει μεγάλο λάθος. Όλα αυτά υπάρχουν και στη μικρή μας χώρα που τη λούζει ο ήλιος.

Šai sērijas grāmatai gribas pielīmēt marķējumu - klasisks policijas detektīvs ar visu procesuālo sīkumainību un likuma ietvaru.
Saprotu, kāpēc vairākās atsauksmēs var lasīt, ka šis esot vājākais darbs sērijā - pietrūkst "melnuma", bet man tas netraucēja, jo intrigas kamols bija un tas tika pamazām šķetināts vaļā, pie tam, ar loģiskām izmeklēšanas darbībām.
Par to arī ir ceturtā zvaigzne - par izmeklēšanas loģiku, jo man tomēr beigās pietrūka taisnīguma uzvaras (amorālām darbībām likuma burts diemžēl nespēj neko padarīt) un arī pašā noslēgumā nedaudz zuda ticamības moments.

P.s. Lai arī daļa atsauksmju sniedzēju pārmet, ka šoreiz bērnu psiholoģe Freija ir gandrīz ieguvusi otrā plāna lomu, tomēr man tieši patika tas, ka šajā grāmatā bija mazāk izmeklētāja un psiholoģes privāto attiecību, bet vairāk izmeklēšanas.

Gallow’s Rock is the fourth in the Children’s House series by Yrsa Sigurdardottir featuring police officer Huldar and Child Psychologist, Freya. There were elements of this book that I really liked but somehow it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I really really wanted to give it four stars because I usually love all Icelandic Noir but ended up with a three star rating.

While Gallow’s Rock is a Huldar and Freya thriller, I didn’t get a sense of any character development for either of them. The story tended to be very plot focused (which is not a bad thing) as opposed to character focused. Freya was almost featureless throughout the book and really acted as a supporting character. I find Huldar and Freya both a little cheesy and cliche too even though they are essentially likeable albeit somewhat predictable.

The plot developed with intrigue and generally kept my interest. However the last fifty pages or so became way too detailed for me and I found it hard to focus and take in the complexity of the storyline.

Gallow’s Rock focuses on some very topical subjects that are significant issues in the 21st century.

Overall a solid three stars.

Okay, I am tipping back and forth here: three stars, four? I dunno.

If you read a series long enough - and there are enough books in it - you have to eventually come across one you just don't like. It pales beside its earlier - or later - brothers and sisters. It tries to compete, struggles in fact, but it just sort of stands there, teetering and tottering, begging to be read, reviewed, noticed!

This is that. One of the two majors (Freyja) who appear in this series (set in Iceland) is barely there. Instead, we are let into the heads of one of three characters who may (or may not) be involved in the bizarre and gruesome death which leads off this book. (And from which the book gets its title.) But since we are in these possibly 'bad guy's' heads, we are thrown just tidbits of what their connection to the crime might be. We are looking over their shoulders with smoky glasses, or blinders. (Do people even know what 'blinders' are anymore?)

Suffice to say, a frustrating read. Lots of bandinage between the investigators. Lots of back references to who slept with whom and the outcome. (For most not so good.) A book which wanders all over the place and when the final 'murderer/murderers' is/are revealed, it's a let down.

A let down, I tell you!

A man is found dead, with a note stapled to his chest - which conveniently blows away - in an area of lava rock formations which are in sight of the Prime Minister's home. Coverups ensue as the police quickly/wrongly decide this has just got to be a suicide. Things fall apart when smarter heads prevail and call this MURDER.

Then a little boy is found living alone in a lavish, luxury apartment. Who is he? How is he connected to the dead man? False leads. Misleading statements from witnesses. It's got all that, but with constant asides to the three people who might have something to do with the murder...

Three stars.

Отново великолепна, не, БРИЛЯНТНА Ирса! Толкова интелигентно и логически последователно пише тази жена! Наистина е уникална! И в тази поредна част от поредицата са засегнати социални теми като насилието над жени и злоупотребата с жени.

Andei 8 dias a ler 2 livros ao mesmo tempo. O outro foi uma desilusão terrível... Felizmente, Yrsa Sigurdardóttir, Huldar, Erla, Freyja, Saga e... aiii... agora falta-me o nome do colega de Huldar - estes nomes escandinavos são um desafio, especialmente os compridos, como é o caso. Mas se leram o livro, sabem de quem falo. Bem, como ia a dizer: ainda bem que esta gente gente toda fez este livro valer a pena e esquecer rapidamente a má experiência do outro.

Adorei CAMPO DE LAVA, o 4° livro da série Children's House ou DNA, ou seja lá o que for que lhe chamem. Adoro o divertimento, por vezes mórbido, que a autora põe na sua escrita e de como esta é leve e fluida. Aliado a um enredo que tem tanto de intrigante como surpreendente, está aqui a mistura perfeita para um bom thriller/policial.

Não adivinhei nada, nadinha, deste enredo. Que história mais estranha: um homem enforcado, um menino de 4 anos encontrado sozinho na casa desse homem, os pais do menino desaparecidos... Como está isto tudo ligado? De forma brilhante.

Adorei o final. Aquele twist final deixou-me, primeiro de boca aberta e, depois, a sorrir de satisfação diabólica.

Só queria mais sobre Huldar e Freyja.

Mit Abgrund hat die isländische Autorin Yrsa Sigurdardottir bereits ihren vierten Thriller um den Kommissar Huldar und die Kinderpsychologin Freyja geschrieben.
Helgi wird in einem zerklüfteten Lavafeld erhängt mit einem Nagel in der Brust und einer leider nicht mehr lesbaren Nachricht aufgefunden. Zur gleichen Zeit finden aufgrund eines anonymen Hinweises Freyja und ein Mitarbeiter des Jugendamtes den kleinen Siggi in der Wohnung des Toten. Der Junge kennt lediglich seinen Vornamen sowie den der Eltern. Er weiß nicht, wo er wohnt und wie er in die Wohnung gekommen ist.

Der Thriller beginnt sehr spannend und packend mit der Ermordung von Helgi, der unter Drogen gesetzt so gut wie nichts von seiner Ermordung mitbekommt. Außer der Brieftasche des Toten gibt es keine Hinweise und keine Spuren auf das Verbrechen. Helgi war ein scheinbar unbescholtener Bürger. Die Grundspannung in diesem Buch wird durchgängig gehalten. Die eigentliche mühsame Ermittlungsarbeit zu den beiden Fällen wird sehr gut und fesselnd dargestellt. Für mich war es zu keinem einzigen Zeitpunkt auch nur ansatzweise langweilig. Akribisch werden Spuren gesammelt und ausgewertet, Puzzleteile zusammengesetzt. Bis auf die Anfangsszene kommt das Buch ohne Blutvergießen aus. Die Auflösung des Falles hat mich voll überzeugt und ist in sich absolut schlüssig. Die gesamte Story ist gut aufgebaut. Die beiden Handlungsstränge – die Ermordung Helgi’s und die Suche der Eltern von Siggi – werden sehr gekonnt miteinander verknüpft und gut aufgelöst.
Wie immer in dieser Reihe stehen auch die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen im Mittelpunkt. Wie bereits in den vorigen Büchern gehen die Akteure mehr oder weniger harmonisch mit einander um. Kommen Huldar und Freyja doch zusammen? Mit Humor und Sarkasmus geht Huldar an diesen Fall heran und bemüht sich einfallsreich um eine Annäherung an Freyja. Wie wird sich die berufliche Beziehung zwischen Huldar und Erla, der Vorgesetzten von Huldar, weiter entwickeln? Wie geht es mit Gudlaugur weiter nach seinem Coming Out? Wird er es den Kollegen mitteilen? Und welche Rolle wird Lina in den weiteren Büchern spielen, die Berufspraktikantin, die neunmalklug Erla mit ihren Anmerkungen und Vorschlägen zur Weißglut treibt?
In dem Buch tun sich wahrlich menschliche Abgründe auf. Als Stichworte sind hier lediglich zu nennen häusliche Gewalt, Sexvideos im Internet und Vergewaltigung.
Mir hat dieser vierte Band enorm gut gefallen, da er von Anfang bis Ende sehr harmonisch und eindrucksvoll geschrieben ist, so dass man das Buch in wenigen Tagen durchgelesen hatte.

Ich gebe dem Buch hier volle 5 Sterne.

IT was the setting of this which really intrigued me. Gallows Rock is a place in Iceland which got its name from the fact that thieves were hung here back in the day. Now it's a tourist attraction and the site of a present day murder which is in progress as the book opens. There's a nail gun in the man's chest.... This is dark people, so finish your tea before you start reading.

When the police find him and go back to his house, they find a small boy alone in the apartment. no guardian or parents around so the mystery of the child and the dead man soon become one hellava mess for Huldar and Freya.

This is pretty much Huldar's story as Freya takes a back seat although she is still busy in the background. There's a lot of good police procedural here and it's a domestically interesting set up too. As the book progresses however, we are taken down a very dark rabbit hole and it gets very disturbing. With the child being so central to the story, this was hard to read at times but it just made me realise what other online worlds exist out there and they are daaaaaaark.

Characters in the book are good and there's a lot of team interaction especially with Huldar and boss Erla with the addition of newcomer Line. Yrsa does the whole ' what goes on in the police office/investigation every day and that is fascinating for fans of detail like me.

The book starts off slow but then there is a definite switch towards the end where it all speeds up and the threads are untangled with horrors and twists to come. A satisfying ending but the whole book just made me feel sad.

Ich hab mal wieder ein Buch beendet 🤩 Und noch dazu eins auf das ich mich wirklich riesig gefreut habe! Ihr ahnt es wahrscheinlich schon: Das Buch hat mir richtig gut gefallen! Es ist der vierte Teil der Huldar und Freya Reihe und wieder ein richtig spannender Fall für die beiden. Ein Toter baumelt am Galgen am Rand eines Lavafelds. Ein kleiner unbekannter Junge wird in dessen Wohnung gefunden. Kein Hinweis auf seine Eltern. Keine Verbindung zum Toten. Keine Zeugen. Keine Hinweise. Huldar und Freya stehen vor einem echt kniffligen Rätsel.

Die Ermittlungen laufen stockend, es gibt keine echte Spur, aber der Druck isr groß, den Fall zeitnah aufzuklären. Dies wird bis zur Hälfte gut beschrieben, sodass man als Leser selbst ziemlich ratlos ist. Die entscheidende Spur kommt relativ spät und ab dann wird es richtig spannend - die Geschichte nimmt Fahrt auf. Die Lösung konnte ich mir zwar in Teilen schnell zusammenreimen, aber das Ende wartet mir einer Überraschung auf.

Alles in allem konnte mich sie Autorin mit diesem Thriller wieder voll überzeugen. Ich mag die Protagonisten, sie sind einfach authentisch und nicht überzogen (außer vielleicht Erla). Der Fall war spannend und gut geschrieben. Schreibstil flüssig und fesselnd. Ich vergebe 4,5 ⭐️- ein bisschen Abzug gibt es nur, weil mir persönlich zwischendrin etwas Tempo gefehlt hat und ich die anderen Bände etwas spannender fand.

Yrsa is one of the best Scandinavian crime writers of our time. I really like her books. I've read most of them. Unfortunately, this book is not the best and I didn't like it as much as the others. It's unnecessarily lengthy and although it's a Freyja and Huldar book, they are just secondary to the story. The mystery is not tricky or thought-provoking and there are no outstanding twists and turns. Personally, the character of Erla is getting too annoying and takes text away which could be used on Freyja and Huldar.

Ne pārāk aizraujošs krimiķis, bet vismaz now I know. Uz Sirurdardotiras grāmatām lūkojos jau kādu laiku, un grāmatu klubiņa izvēles dēļ beidzot bija iespēja kādu no tām arī izlasīt. Nenožēloju, bet citas viņas grāmatas lai paliek faniem.

Sižets interesants, tomēr tēli un viņu izvēles nepārliecināja. Piemēram, grūti noticēt, ka izmeklētājam Huldaram, kas attēlots kā raupjš, skaudīgs, arman-neērti-ka-tu-esi-gejs-bet-vispār-es-neesmu-homofobs attieksmi, pamatīgs smēķētājs, ir bijis sakars ar gandrīz visām romānā pieminētajām sievietēm. Kā arī pievilcīgais hipstervikingu tipāžs Hlins, kurš nenēsā laulību gredzenu - izskatās, ka viņa loma grāmatā bija tikai un vienīgi parādīt lasītājiem, ka Huldaram ir jūtas pret Freiju. Un daži tēli, no kuriem vispār nebija nekādas jēgas. Ja nu vienīgi tas, ka pieci draugi autorei laikam likās labāk nekā trīs vai četri. Lai lasītājam ir vairāk aizdomās turamo. Un par to īsto vainīgo - man nedaudz cemme, kā autore izdomājusi viņu attaisnot. Attaisnoja, vai ne?

Tomēr tajā pašā laikā priecājos, ka arvien vairāk tiek rakstīts par pornogrāfijas milzīgo problēmu un to, ka mēs joprojām neesam atraduši veidu, kā ar to cīnīties. Interesanti, ka pavisam neilgi pirms grāmatas lasīšanas es piedalījos lekcijā par kādas feministu biedrības darbību Reikjavīkā. Izrādās, ka Islande, kas pēc statistikas ir viena no tām valstīm, kurā ir viszemākie vardarbības pret sievietēm rādītāji, šī problēma ir milzīga. Aizliegtie striptīzklubi kļuva par šampaniešu bāriem, kur par milzu naudu var nopirkt pudeli sūdīga šampanieša un privātu sarunu ar meiteni. Un šīs meitenes pirms gadiem padsmit galvenokārt bija no Baltijas valstīm. Tagad vairāk no Balkāniem, Slovēnijas, Ukrainas. Ai, par visu šo domājot man atkal uznāk vēlme pamētāt olas pa Saeimas logiem, kas joprojām nevar ratificēt Stambulas konvenciju. Jebkurā gadījumā - Islandē pirkt seksu grib vairāk nekā Dānijā, un "kamēr būs piedāvājums, būs arī gribētāji" ir maigi sakot stulbs. Lielākā daļa seksa un porno biznesā iesaistīto (it sevišķi sievietes) tur ir pret savu gribu un bieži vien nespēcīgas.

Ja nu kas, grāmata nebija par šo. Bet paldies autorei par iespēju par to runāt.

Odlična Yrsa kao i uvijek dosad!

Diese Reihe entwickelt sich langsam aber sich zu einer meiner absolut Lieblingskrimireihen, und Yrsa Sigurðardóttir zu einer meiner Lieblingskrimiautorinnen. Auch der vierte Teil kann wieder mit einem spannenden und verzwickten Fall locken, und natürlich den unglaublich sympatischen Ermittlern Huldar und Freyja.

Ich mag ihre "will they - won't they" - Beziehung sehr, obwohl das persönliche zwischen den beiden in diesem Band deutlich kürzer kommt als in den vorherigen teilen, was mich zwar etwas enttäuscht hat, aber mich letztlich nur noch gespannter auf Teil 5 macht.

Die Kapitel fliegen nur so hin und es file mir immer extrem schwer das Buch aus der Hand zu legen. Immer nur noch ein Kapitel mehr! (Kennen wir glaub ich alle, oder?) Wie immer ist der Schreibstil flüssig, gut zu lesen und packt einen. Kein Kapitel war langweilig und ich habe das Buch in zwei Tagen durchgesuchtet.

Das Buch beginnt mit dem Mord an Helgi, der dann auch an einer Stelle gefunden wird, die nicht nur das bergen der Leiche erschwert, sondern auch aus politischen Gründen den Zeitplan der Polizei durcheinander wirft.

Und dann wird auch noch ein kleines Kind gefunden, das nicht nur alleine in einer Wohnung ist ... sondern gehört diese auch noch dem Ermordeten.

Der 3-jährige Siggi ist als Zeuge natürlich etwas schwieriger zu befragen. Er mmöchte einfach nur seine Mama wieder, aber auch diese ist nicht auffindbar. Hierraus entwickeln sich das zwei nebeneinander herlaufende Ermittlungen, einmal die Suche nach Siggi's Familie und dann die Aufklärung des Mordes an Helgi. Und von hieran wird es nur immer verzwickter.

Der 4. Band passt sich von der Stimmung her nahtlos in die Reihe an, die Fälle sind düster und brutal und Kommissar Huldar ist gefragt Hintergründe und Zusammenhänge aufzudecken, die nicht so leicht ersichtlich sind. Er muss sich häufig auch einfach auf sein Gefühl verlassen.

Freyja tritt in diesem Band etwas in den Hintergrund und ich hoffe, dass wir ihr wieder mehr im nächsten Teil begegnen.

Was ich neben den wirklich sehr spannenden, komplexen Fällen am meisten an Yrsas Krimis mag, sind ihre wirklich realen Figuren und die düstere, teils bedrückende Atmosphäre die sie kreiert.

Wie immer, eine klare Leseempfehlung. Und ja, man kann die Bücher auch definitiv lesen ohne die vorherigen Bände zu kennen, aber gerade was die persönlichen Beziehung angeht verliert man doch etwas wenn man nicht vorne beginnt.

Oh, und noch ein letzter Hinweis, wer eher Krimis liebt, die Richtung Thriller gehen und eine brisante Wendung nach der nächsten haben ... hier vielleicht die Erwartungen anpassen. Ich finde Yrsas Krimis allesamt super spannend, aber eher auf eine ruhigere Art. Sie lässt sich Zeit die Fälle langsam zu entfalten. Der Spannungsbogen ist hier eher subtil, aber nichts desto trotz war ich von der Handlung gefangen und wollte es nicht aus der Hand legen.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an advance copy of Gallows Rock, the fourth novel to feature child psychologist Freyja and police detective Huldar.

A man is found hanging from Gallows Rock, a tourist attraction outside Reykjavik, but the bolt through his chest indicates murder rather than suicide. Things get stranger when they go to Helgi’s flat and find a four year old boy, Siggi, alone there. Freya looks after him while Huldar tries to find Siggi’s parents and Helgi’s killer.

I thoroughly enjoyed Gallows Rock which is an absorbing read full of twists and turns. It is told mostly from the investigative point of view so the reader can live it with them. I was captured by the unusual premise and then got really involved in the plot, trying to figure out the links and the motive. I got a couple of details but mostly I was just following the author’s lead. It’s clever the way small, easily overlooked details are woven into the outcome without giving any hints of what’s to come. I was hooked from start to finish. And what a finish, a final flourishing twist.

This is a novel more about Huldar than Freyja as it’s all about the investigation of this very strange situation. I like the way the author includes modern themes, even if they aren’t pleasant, without baffling the reader with too much tech speak. The broad brushstroke approach to internet manipulation is very appealing and makes it understandable. I also like the humanity of the characters, Freyja wondering if she can afford a flat and Huldar trying to get a date with Freyja, among other things. They seem very normal and relatable. I like the small moments of humour in the novel, like Freyja’s flat hunting experience which made me laugh, again it’s the small observations that make it relatable.

Gallows Rock is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

A gripping and disturbing read, well written and entertaining.
It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last.
The plot is dark, full of twists and turns. The characters are well thought and interesting, the solid mystery kept me guessing.
Highly recommended.

Stânca Spânzuratului este un loc de lângă Reykjavik unde aveau loc execuțiile pe vremuri dar care acum a devenit atracție turistică. Toate bune și frumoase până când, într-o dimineață, acolo este găsit un bărbat spânzurat cu un cui bătut în piept fapt care dovedește că nu a fost sinucidere.

Atunci când polițiștii ajung în apartamentul lui, găsesc un băiețel de patru ani care nu pare să aibă nicio legătură cu victima și ai cărui părinți sunt de negăsit.

Detectivul Huldar îl urmărește pe ucigaș, iar asistenta socială Freyja îi caută pe părinții băiatului, împreună reușind să dea viață unei povești complicate și încărcate de răzbunare.

Îmi place foarte mult cum scrie autoarea, adevărul este că puțini scriitori nordici nu sunt pe gustul meu, de obicei îi citesc fără răsuflare.

Și aici a fost la fel, cartea a mers ca unsă, abia așteptam să văd ce mai află Huldar și Freyja, fiecare dezvăluire făcea povestea și mai captivantă.

Singurul minus a fost faptul că interacțiunile dintre ei au fost mai rare în acest volum și chiar îmi doream să se vadă și să discute mai des. Înțeleg de ce este așa, la câte s-au întâmplat în celelalte volume, dar sper următoarele să fie mai mult cu ei împreună la partea de investigat.

Ceturtā "Bērnu mājas" (lai man piedod Zvaigzne ABC, bet tulkojot "Children's house" kā "BērnA māja" mani var arī nokaitināt, tāpēc rakstīšu pareizo variantu savā atsauksmē) sērijas grāmata atkal izvelk saulītē bērnu psiholoģes Freijas galvenos darba pienākumus, mēģinot izvilināt no četrgadīga bērna, kur varētu būt atrodami viņa vecāki. Jo bērns pats tika uziets viens pats noslepkavota vīrieša dzīvoklī.

Arī policijas izmeklēšana atspoguļota detalizēti un interesanti, tādā veidā lasītājam dodot iespēju risināt daudzās mīklas kopā ar izmeklētājiem.

Atkal jau beigās autore iemet kādu pavērsienu, kas visu stāstu pavērš citā gaismā. Man ļoti patīk Irsas Sigurdardotiras daiļrade! Iesaku!
