A longtime fan of Jørn Lier Horst and his writing, I was eager to see how this would translate into some collaborative work with Thomas Enger. The pair have come up with a great new series, with a Norwegian police officer and crime reporter working together to solve crimes. Alexander Blix and Emma Ramm are both at New Year’s Even celebrations in Oslo when a bomb explodes and kills many. Emma is able to help a woman who is in the water, only to realise that it is the mother of a young girl who has been missing for a decade. This opens up new questions about the kidnapping, which has both Blix and Ramm looking into things. What was presumed a kidnapping and murder may not be the case now, as new questions emerge. Horst and Enger pen yet another winner with this novel, which kept me reading until I got all the answers.

There is a buzz around Oslo for the New Year’s Eve celebrations and Emma Ramm is eager to witness it. At the strike of midnight, fireworks light up the sky, but there is also a bomb explosion, a suspected terrorist attack. In the mayhem, Ramm tries to help those in need and comes across Alexander Blix, a Detective Inspector with the Homicide division, with whom she has worked in the past. Noticing a body floating in the water, Emma rushes to help. It is only when the woman is brought to shore that she is identified as Ruth-Kristine Smeplass, mother to Patricia Smeplass, who was abducted at age two a decade before.

Emma’s journalist brain begins churning and she works with Blix to see if there are any new leads to follow. While Patricia has been kidnapped and presumed dead, someone may know something that could revitalise the case. When Emma receives some disturbing personal news, she is temporarily derailed and must trying to regain her focus. All the while, Blix ponders whether the bombing was terror related or if someone was targeting Ruth-Kristine for something.

As the investigation progresses, both Ramm and Blix work on leads that have them looking outside Norway for answers. Could Patricia Semplass still be alive? If so, where has she been for the last decade? A bomber is also on the loose, someone who may have answers that could shed light on the investigation and bring some peace to a family that has been in mourning for years. Horst and Enger work their magic again and have come up with a sensational thriller that is easily devoured in a few sittings.

I thoroughly enjoy books that work outside the cookie cutter outline for a police procedural. Horst and Enger do so effectively, while working two key angles throughout. Their writing is strong and keeps the reader engrossed in the story, without going too over the top. While I am always eager to read Horst’s independent work, this collaboration is refreshing and appeals to me as well!

Alexander Blix and Emma Ramm do well as joint protagonists. Both have their own personal stories that receive some attention throughout, but it is their collaborative efforts that create great character development, perfect as the series continues. They work well together, but also independently, allowing the reader to see how they bring their own spin to the larger case. This is sure to be a great series if both are highlighted with their strengths throughout.

Cold cases can sometimes be hard to keep ‘warm’, but the authors do well with this one. The narrative worked well, developing in a few directions and pacing itself so that the reader does not get lost, either in the present or flashback sequences. Great characters keep the plot moving and add a flavour to the writing so the reader is never left unimpressed. There is a strong sense of drama, which keeps the reader engaged and allows for some needed growth of the protagonists. The translation was seamless, leaving me to wonder how something that was not penned in English works so well. That being said, I have always found Jørn Lier Horst is able to write in such a manner as to make the narrative quite fluid. I have the next book in the series teed up and ready to go, so I will dive right in to see how I feel about it.

Kudos, Messrs. Horst and Enger, for another great read. I hope this series takes off and others enjoy it as much as I have.

I was a little worried about reading Smoke Screen, not because I believed that it would be a terrible read but because I just loved Death Deserved so much and wanted Smoke Screen to have that lasting impact also. This review is the proof that this writing duo know just how to deliver time and time again. An intriguing title, a mysterious cover and a synopsis that promises to deliver a narrative balancing on a tripwire. Enger and Horst have penned another addition that will create a shadow on my soul and leave me hungering to visit the Scandinavian Isles.

Smoke Screen is book two in the Blixx & Ramm series and its New Years Eve in Oslo. The partygoers have gathered at the square at city hall. The annual fireworks display goes horrifically awry with an explosion which ups the terror threat level to extreme. One of the casualties is the mother of Patricia Smeplass, a two-year-old girl that was kidnapped around ten years ago and never found. Is this a coincidence or is it a targeted attack? Blixx and Ramm go about investigating the connection.

Smoke Screen and its narrative was like walking into the eye of the storm. Familiar sights were gone but you were completely powerless to the pulling power that the book had over you. The plot pulled you in every direction, leaving you feeling disorientated, but the narrative had the threat of a knife edge breaking you, but you can’t look away with the thrill of it all. I was rattled and I loved every minute of it.

Two incredibly flawed characters that seem to be an odd pairing but one that works because well, it just does. They feed off each other’s energies and the pressure mounts imperceptibly but it never stops them getting to the bottom of their cases. Smoke Screen surely puts this dream team of authors at the top of their game. Blixx, a police officer that is plagued by traumatic events and Ramm, a journalist and blogger that has her moral compass intact despite previous difficulties. Blixx is more a father figure to her than acquaintance.

Smoke Screen highlighted the fragility of life and I was brought to my knees with its hard hitting and bleak prose, it was genuine and often felt like a punch to the gut. I have only experienced this kind of flow with but a few authors but Enger and Horst nailed the inevitability of life and death.

Smoke Screen is laced with more than a smattering of the dark and disturbing but gives a bird’s eye view of what being human entails and the depths of depravity that some individuals will stoop to.

This is the second in a series written by two of Norway’s top crime-writers, featuring police officer Alexander Blix and journalist Emma Ramm. Both are separately attending the New Year’s firework display near Oslo harbour when a bomb, hidden in a garbage bin, explodes. One of the fatalities is Emma’s boyfriend Kaspar. Another is identified as the mother of a two-year-old girl who disappeared ten years earlier as was never found. It was a case which Blix investigated and is still haunted by.
As the two protagonists pursue their separate leads, it becomes clear that the explosion is linked to the girl’s disappearance, although the details remain elusive. The story proceeds slowly and methodically with chapters alternating between the two protagonists, the builds to a thrilling finale with a final shocking revelation.
This is an assured and exciting piece of writing by two veterans of the genre, with a couple of well-rounded and interesting protagonists.

OK …

Beoordeling: 4,0 ⭐️

It's delightful to read a crime novel, created by the collaboration between two of your favorite Nordic authors, Jorn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger. Horst is widely known for his Inspector Wisting book series which has been adapted into a successful television show (for a full review click here) while Enger is the man behind the popular Henning Juul novels and some great standalone ones like the superb Inborn. Horst has also worked as a Senior Investigator Officer at the Norwegian police force and his experience proves to be invaluable for his detailed descriptions of the police procedures that dominate his writings. Enger, on the other hand, is a former journalist and the perfect man to create characters such as Emma Ramm who works for an online newspaper and investigates cases in her own way. Smoke Screen is the second installment in the Alexander Blix and Emma Ramm series, following Death Deserved (for a full review click here), and exceeds the, admittedly high, expectations set by the previous volume. Both authors leave their distinctive mark in the text and the reader who is familiar with their previous work can trace certain characteristics that are reminiscent of their particular writing style. There is a comprehensive analysis of the police work and the stages of an active investigation, most likely written by Horst, and an explosive pacing which can be attributed to Enger whose thrillers tend to move forward in a quick tempo. This combination results in a high-octane mix of the classical police procedural and thriller that guarantees entertainment and excitement from the first page until the last one.

The Story: A firework celebration in Oslo to usher the new year turned into a nightmare when an explosion occurred, putting the city on terrorist alert. During search and rescue, Blix recognizes one of the severely injured survivors to be the mother of a kidnapped child who was never found. Is this a mere coincidence?

My thoughts: This is the second book in the Alexander Blix and Emma Ramm series and I enjoyed it a tad more than the first! I loved how complicated the plot was and the labyrinthe investigation by Blix and Ramm gives so much suspense to the overall story! The twist was an unexpected one and I personally think it was good!

However, I would love to see more interaction between Blix and Ramm. Their connection in this story felt a bit awkward to be honest.

Regardless, I am loving this series so far, and I look forward to reading the next book - Unhinged!

Smoke Screen is book two in the Blix & Ramm series, which is a collaboration between two of Norway’s most popular crime fiction writers. In my review of book one, Death Deserved, I called Thomas Enger and Jørn Lier Horst a dream team of crime writers and a force to be reckoned with. Bold statement but after reading Smoke Screen, my belief in those words has only been cemented even more firmly and the Blix & Ramm series is fast becoming one of the best crime fiction series out there.

It’s New Year’s Eve in Oslo. Revellers have gathered on the square by City Hall to ring in the new year. But the annual fireworks celebrations are rocked by an explosion and the city is put on high alert. One of the survivors is the mother of Patricia Smeplass, a two year old girl who was kidnapped ten years ago and never found. This renews interest in the case and Blix and Ramm set out to investigate. What happened to Patricia?

Tensely charged opening chapters pulled me in so hard that I already knew I wouldn’t be putting this book down until I reached the final page. And what a ride it was, yet again. The pace is so extremely spot-on, it felt as if I hadn’t drawn a single breath throughout the entire thing. Smoke Screen is full of surprises and I had many jaw-dropping “wait, what?” moments. Trying to figure things out became a real challenge. One I failed at miserably, in case you wondered.

A thrill a minute, Smoke Screen is full of suspense and intrigue. With a clever and intricate plot, plenty of twists and turns and a cast of engaging characters, there is a lot to keep you glued to the pages here. The relationship between Blix and Ramm might seem a little odd and it is definitely immensely complicated but it works like a charm. Theirs isn’t the typical investigative partnership. Both come at an investigation in different ways and discover different things. Kovic gets a little shove forward as well and a chance to shine, which I truly enjoyed.

The writing is just crazy good, you guys. It’s seamless, it flows, it draws you in and I’m completely unable to spot where Enger ends and Horst begins or the other way around. Which is at it should be. On top of that, I can see entire scenes play out right in front of my eyes. This series should be on tv. Netflix, take note!

Death Deserved blew me away. Smoke Screen blew me away even more. There are a lot of crime fiction series out there and it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. I firmly believe Enger and Horst are that something special, even though I can’t put my finger on what that actually is. Like I said, dream team.

Silvesterknall

A novel to place you in Oslo at New Year

This is a novel, a series to really get your Nordic Noir teeth into. It’s the brainchild of two writers at the top of their game.

It’s an explosive introduction to Oslo. Literarily. We are there at New Years and witnessing the fireworks when an explosion rocks the harbour. People are killed or injured. Emma Ramm is at the fireworks and sees events unfold. The city is put on high alert and Blix and Ramm come together to get to the bottom of what really happened. Turns out one of the victims is the mother of a missing child. A case Blix has personal experience of.

The characters of Blix and Ramm is one of the most interesting and refreshingly different in crime fiction. Blix is a police officer and Ramm a journalist and blogger yet the two have mutual respect for each other and Blix is almost a father figure to her. The banter and relationship between the two is based on mutual respect.

Blix is troubled by the case of the missing child as this left a hole in his life when he was the officer on the case. This high profile case which was never solved has taken its toll on him. As a result, his new determination to solve it, takes on a new urgency. At the same time, Ramm realises this case is getting under her skin. She too takes on the investigation and both her and Blix find that their paths cross in ways they could never have expected.

A fine complex web of characters with spindly secrets we have here. Megan Turney, I salute you. The translation is seamless and engaging.

I might cheat and read the next in the series in the original but then I would be missing out on some fine translation.

I'm a fan of both Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger, as storytellers and just great blokes too (oh for the days when we all perhaps took for granted the many opportunities to hang out at crime writing festivals). So I was intrigued by their teaming up for a series starring Oslo cop Alexander Blix and online journalist Emma Ramm (interestingly the two protagonists reflect Horst and Enger's prior careers - though I don't know if this means they each write that particular character's viewpoint).

SMOKE SCREEN opens with New Year's Eve celebrations at the harbour in Oslo, an icy borderline between one year ending and another beginning. But the year isn't the only thing to end as midnight approaches; a bomb goes off, and lives are lost. An investigation begins. Is it a terrorist attack - or something more targeted? The fact that among the victims is a woman some believe was involved with the disappearance of her own daughter ten years before, has Blix wondering if there was something more to the bombing than a random attack on the public at a busy time and place.

After the explosive beginning, this novel settles into an absorbing tale that draws you in slowly and surely as Blix and Ramm both look to get to the bottom of both what happened at the harbour, and why, and what happened to little Patricia Semplass all those years ago (a case that still troubles Blix).

Both are motivated by something more than just their professional roles.

Horst and Enger almost lull readers with their smooth style as events unfold, setting us up for the revelations to come. Blix and Ramm are intriguing main characters, linked by tragedies and operating in ways similar and contrasting. It's a fascinating relationship. The characterisation and character interplay is good throughout, from our heroes to Blix's police partner Kovic to various individuals that crop up in the story: incarcerated father, grieving parent, immigrant hotel maid, and more.

There's a sense of humanity, and sorrow, throughout the book. Of the weight of actions taken and tragedies old and new. It's a clever tale that almost mesmerises more than hitting you over the head with obvious action or style. While at the same time it does pack some emotional oomph.

A good read from two very good authors.

OHMYGOD I LOVED THIS ONE

DEFINITELY LOVE IT MORE THAN THE FIRST ONE

in my opinion, the writing in the first one was just slightly better, i had less to complain about in the sentences and choice of words and such in the first one. it happened a handful of times in this one.

BUT. THE STORY. i dont know what it was, but the story, the crime, in this one was so engaging and had me so incredibly hooked. i felt so many things.

Spannend boek!
