Revival or We Die: A Great Awakening is Our Only Hope

Rate this book
On the brink of collapse, our nation’s only hope is a visitation of God’s power and presence.

What will heal the deep racial, social, and political divisions that are tearing us apart? How can we stop the evil of human trafficking? What can turn the rising tide of opioid addiction? What will cure the epidemic of fatherless homes? Man-made laws and policies don’t hold the answers. Social programs and initiatives fall hopelessly short. There is no political solution.

We must have divine visitation.  We must have awakening.  We must have revival.

In Revival or We Die, respected biblical scholar, bestselling author, and radio host, Dr. Michael Brown calls the American Church back to God and His Kingdom purposes. He presents a prophetic “state of the union” address, offering a candid look at the United States and revealing why our only hope is a true spiritual awakening.

Written with the same passion and zeal that characterized his early books, How Saved Are We? and Whatever Happened to the Power of God? , Dr. Brown issues a fresh clarion call to every true believer in this generation.
“...God sees the condition of our souls, how we have exchanged professionalism for the anointing, how we have traded dependence on the Spirit for fleshly endeavors, how we have substituted a carnal business approach for our first love devotion. Now is the time to awaken!”

If we are going to save our nation, the American Church must… The stirring message of this book is what every Christian must hear at this crucial moment. Our nation is at a tipping point, and you can play a pivotal role in the mighty revival that God longs to bring. Are you willing?

This book…WOW. One of the best I’ve read so far regarding revival. Dr Brown focuses in on not just past revivals (which he has experienced and been a part of the Brownsville Revival) but the desperate need for one in America. Something I pulled out from this book was that one of the things that most prompted intercession for revival was that young people had dropped from the church. Prayer and true repentance spark the flames of revival in the church. As one quote he uses in the book says “Beloved, for the sake of a dying, suffering world…count the cost, pay the price, get Gods power, and set the captives free”

The title of this book grabbed my attention. I have read one or two of Michael Brown’s other books but this one seemed like an interesting read. Little did I know what this powerful book can do for you and me. It’s a call to experience God’s presence through revival today before it’s too late.

Brown begins the book by saying there is more God wants to do and more He has for His Church. He asks whether we already for the more God wants to do. He tells the story of his own walk with God and his testimony. He shares a first-person testimony from a person who came to the Brownsville revival in the mid-1990s.

Chapter 2 gives a history of church leaders cried out to God and asking for more than religion, for revival in America and around the world. These cries happened before the 1960s when it seemed the devil’s grip on America was tightening. He talks about how the times have really changed beginning in 1960s through the 1990s. Politics and religion alone cannot save America. He says, “No matter how dark things look, God can turn the tide. But we must get desperate.”

In chapter 3, Brown recounts when Israel had a revival because they rediscovered the scrolls of the law in the temple that had been lost. As a result, there was a revival throughout the land. They got rid of all the implements of false god worship. The Word of God must be the center of our revival. People need to realize the high-stakes of our sins. We must not deceive ourselves that we are okay. We must realize how sick our nation is and how much we need God.

Chapter 4 reveals how much we need to realize our great sins so we can see the great goodness of God. He calls it “Gospel 101.” We cannot see God’s righteousness if we do not realize our sin. We must get the gospel right. He outlines the gospel message. True repentance goes deeper than sin. He discusses shallow preaching, or even worse, counterfeit gospels. He gives examples of how we have gotten the gospel wrong.

In chapter 5, the author talks about repentance and how it works. Many Christians today think their sin is okay. Like David, they think their sins are not that bad. We must not become calloused to our sin. He uses the story of David and Bathsheba as an illustration of the dangers of thinking we are okay. When we are truly repentant, we experience God’s mercy. We rationalize our sin and say it is not as bad as someone else’s.

Chapter 6 is called “Restore My First Love.” We need to develop a love for God greater than any other love. He reminds Christians of the many hymns they used to sing when saved from their sins. We need to want to be one with God and burn with passion for Him alone. We must focus on Jesus instead of ourselves. We must deeply want the cleansed by God.

In chapter 7, Brown talks about sounding the alarm of our desperation for God. He says the Church has become complacent. The Church needs to have a sense of urgency. We need to hear the trumpet call again before our nation slips into chaos and it’s too late. We should be concerned about our nation and world.

Chapter 8 is about God’s honor being at stake. He says that revival can begin also because of a jealousy for the Lord’s name. We need to be grieved by the things happening in the Church that are wrong and sinful. Do we have pain when we see what’s happening in the Church and the world? How hungry are we for revival first when we have a heart for God, we see the things that need to change, and only He can change them.

In chapter 9, Brown addresses Celebrity Christianity. He talks about how not every that proclaims God is not godly. We need the presence of God. We must not give in to the wisdom of the world and the power of the flesh. He says some people are doing mighty works for God without a deep relationship with Him.

Chapter 10 asks, “Is it too late?” We must strike a balance between complacency and depression. We must be urgent while the time is not too far past. A massive awakening can change the hearts of people and our country. God’s judgment and revival can still happen for America. It can happen for the whole world.

In chapter 11, he talks about going from revival to awakening. He defines revival as “a season of unusual divine revelation resulting in deep repentance, supernatural renewal and sweeping Reformation in the Church along with the radical conversion of sinners in the world often producing moral, social, and even economic change in the local and national communities.” He unpacks the meaning of this definition with examples.

Chapter 12 is an encouraging chapter about what the world has yet to see. He shows the original story of this phrase, “The world has yet to see what God can do with the consecrated man like me.” He asks if these words describe you. He ends with a powerful call to find out the answer to that question.

Michael Brown offers a great book about revival and what it truly means. He offers reflection and commentary on the current situation of America. But he doesn’t stop with the negative. He tells you how to experience God’s presence first, and then revival in your church and the world. I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking God’s powerful presence today.

My Heart is Burning!

If after reading this book, your heart does not burn within you, and every cell in your being cries out for “MORE! MORE, GOD!”, then as the old saying goes, “your wood is wet”. My heart cries out for more. More than what can be found in organized, institutional religion. It yearns to break free into true, organic, New Testament Christianity, without form, ceremony or rituals. I long to be the Ekklesia God intended. Let it start now, with ME, LORD! Let it begin with ME!

I love all of Dr Browns work. This book was encouraging and sparking. I love how his books are “quick” reads with short chapters but also so deep and challenging. So grateful for his teaching, love of the Lord, focus on the true gospel, And desire to be Spirit filled and Spirit dependent. I am always blessed by Dr Brown and eternally grateful for how the Lord uses him. Read this book to be revived in the Lord, refocused, and hopeful because the Lord can do anything !!

We MUST Have Revival

Revival is something I have prayed for and longed for for years. A move of the Holy Spirit that literally changes everyone who comes near. I continue to pray for, teach about, and long to see God move in these last days. I agree, this really is our only hope. Start now and with me Lord!

It is a great book Dr Brown is great at pointing out how America is standing on a thin line. His assessment is correct saying that we need to repent and believe and this will be the start of a revival I believe it has a chance of happening in our lifetime and we just need to take it seriously. This book has been a blessing and I hope it is helpful to anyone else who reads it.

The final three or four chapters were inspiring, but everything before was not particularly enlightening nor informative. We have been praying for revival ourselves for approximately a year but I do not believe we have grown desperate enough. I desire for a movement such as he gave account in the final chapters.

I'd read through this book when it first came out in paperback/Kindle and was stirred, but listening on the Audible version I was ignited in an even greater way. Things have gotten even darken than when the book was written and the title rings even more true, we must have Revival Or We Die!

Students of revival won't learn a great deal but we can't hear enough how desperately we need God and how He is our only answer to the crisis we're facing.

I've always appreciated Dr. Brown's boldness, balance, fairness to present different sides of arguments, and clarity on the Scripture. Yet, I felt when he waded into conservative politics he was unfair and not balanced. It seemed more like bashing than balanced. The issues rightly needed to be addressed but his handling seemed clumsy and unfair. If it were for this section, I likely would have bought a case of the books and gotten them out.

Regardless, the message is desperately needed and delivered well. So, despite my qualms I give it five stars.
