Jim follows the peculiar trial of clues, including the business card of a mysterious gypsy fortune teller, deep into the dark abandoned subway tunnels beneath New York City. Near the top of the list is one word that has never been crossed off: “God”.
Their lives become mixed in this darkly relevant, heart pounding adventure that will keep you up at night, making you ask yourself questions that you may not be ready to answer.
I wish to thank NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for this entertaining and imaginative ebook in return for an honest review. This was an easy, mainly fast-paced read with intriguing characters. It contained some thought-provoking concepts involving religious beliefs or the lack of them, free will, the imminent destruction of the world, sacrifice, and overcoming fear.
Jim, a private investigator, is hired to find a gorilla that was stolen from the zoo. He is down on his luck and needs this job offered by a wealthy movie producer. We learn that there has been a theft of animals worldwide. Darryl is a young Black boy who loves playing baseball with the mostly older, bigger neighbourhood boys. He has a few skills but is not very good at the game. He is often picked last for these informal games, but this is his favourite part of his day. At night he is overcome by fears. Hidden in his closet, he keeps a list naming each thing that scares him. When he is no longer afraid of an item, he scratches it off but adds new ones to his ever-lengthening list.
Sitting alone in the stands watching the boys play is an older man, Vintner. He was a former financier and a baseball fan. He sees a lot of promise in young Darryl, befriends him, and gives him advice on how to improve his game. He begins to regard him as the son he never had. After taking the overjoyed Darryl to a Big League game, his mother is angry. She finds Vintner's behaviour creepy and is suspicious of his motives towards her son. She warns him to have no contact with Darryl.
Vintner is not what he seems. He believes God has commanded him to be a new-age Noah while He destroys our sinful planet. Towards this purpose, Vintner has been stealing a wide variety of animals and hiding them in a maze of tunnels under the New York subway system. Homeless people live in the dark underground tunnels and have formed a family to assist and protect each other. They may be part of the plan to survive and build a better world after this one is destroyed.
The lives of Jim, Vintner, and Darryl connect, but their beliefs, motivations, and intentions diverge. Near the conclusion, Darryl is given a task that puts him in a dangerous and frightening position. The tension and suspense are heightened. If he survives, will his list of fears diminish or be increased? The author, Trevor Shane, is talented, and I hope he writes further original and imaginative stories. 3.5 stars raised to 4.
I love a good mystery and this story had my mind racing as I read. It took me just a bit to get completely submersed, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down!
This book has so many more elements than I was expecting. There is a lot to understand, but the author does a great job of weaving everything together. This book kept me interested, and kept me reading!
This imaginative story briefly examines our views on God and the roles he plays in our lives or the lack there of. More importantly throughout the book the reader is reminded of the simple and meaningful things in life, such as a 13 year old boys love for the beautiful game of baseball. The characters in this book are great and all are faced with fears as some are boldly overcome while others turn to paranoia. The story creatively works it’s way to a bizarre but fun plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
This book definitely grabbed my attention from the start. The characters and scenery really came to life. I can typically guess the ending of a book but didn’t with this one! The author has a great voice and all the characters were super relatable! I’m really happy I took a chance on it.
List of Fears is a very cohesive mystery. There is a great balance between the characters, their life, and the mystery aspect. The themes and setting really helped set this book apart from others.
The plot was fast-paced and flowed smoothly and the characters were those who I really liked reading about. They were interesting and compelling.
This book was so very well written. It's a mystery that makes you think on a deep level. It keeps your mind going throughout the entirety of the story.
There are plenty of twists along the way that will keep the reader on their toes. The suspense aspect was very well done.
I've read all of Trevor's books and I always enjoy how he comes up with an outrageous premise and then follows where it leads. In this case ordinary people find themselves wrapped up in a modern, literal biblical narrative. What do every day people do when faced with the type of requests those in the bible were asked to perform? And what is really being asked?
A wonderfully terrifying and charming page turner! I will not soon forget this book. While its a fun read it is also thought provoking. It’s ironic that a book centering around an act of God can be so utterly human.
