tl;dr Strong beginning and powerful ending, with a middle of the road in between. I think all-in-all, a fantastic addition to the series. From the frightening supernatural to gritty realism, this volume is definitely all about the human psyche and getting you to rethink your relationships and how you interact and treat those around you. Loved this volume, will be remembering these stories for a long time for sure.
Not tl;dr:
This volume covered three more spooky tales.
Story #1 - 傘子さんが来る: Miharu is in the track and field club at school and is famous, along with her friend and rival Youko, for the two constantly being first or second place together. Under pressure from her mother, this upcoming race has her vying for first, but she and Youko end up running into trouble--a ghost!
Kasako (literally: Umbrella Girl) haunts the streets on rainy days, carrying what looks like an umbrella, but you soon realize is absolutely not. She approaches you, demanding you find her real umbrella, and if you don't within four days, she returns for /you/.
With a ticking clock, the two girls rush to solve the mystery of the ghost and find the umbrella before it's too late.
I actually really enjoyed this one. I had some guesses how it was going to go, but there were still a couple surprises tossed in there. The epilogue, as usual, was great too. Loved the message/moral. Just how will you handle decisions in moments of crisis? What all factors will you genuinely consider? Or can you even prepare for that? Definitely a concept people should take some time to think about. For sure a story that will creep back up on you whenever it rains.
Story #2 - ブラック掲示板: Misa loves hanging out with her friends, but gosh, sometimes Eiko can be so annoying! Luckily there's an online forum specifically for gossiping about the school, and that's just the place to rant. However, things take a turn for Misa, as now suddenly, everyone's eyes are on her. Just who are all these anonymous people bullying her online? Why won't they stop? And...they're coming to her house?
This was a 'meh' from me. It was a slow start and the ending was predictable in a way that made it not fun. (Though I did enjoy me calling it with also being on the forum! Haha. That part was good.) The moral of "don't bully", while important, is a hard one to make engaging without sounding condescending. There was an attempt made here, and the element to it did help it a bit, but it otherwise wasn't a stand-out story for me.
We also had this moral before in a previous volume, but this one adds the online element, which I know is a HUGE problem for that age group especially. So I get the reason for it. Just wish there was a little more "umph" to it.
Story #3 - 黄泉の真実: Nagisa spends every day at school relentlessly bullied by her classmates, from being completely ignored and isolated, to graffiti on her desk, to constant gossip of how worthless she is, it's a nightmare. With no end or help in sight, on a stormy day, she runs off and hides, avoiding class. Discovering a photo of an older student at the school who she found beautiful, thinking she must never be bullied given how beautiful she looks, Nagisa wishes for a new life away from this torture. Her wish is granted, and it seems magical at first, until a darker side is revealed.
Man the prologue started with a banger. Being all cute like, 'school is a great place to learn, not just from studies, but from friends and socializing too,' and then saying, 'but what if you have no friends and everyone hates you' like Jesus LOL. And like good lord, the bullying that this starts with is so brutal x'D I think you can really see the contrast between this story and the previous one. There feels more at stake here, more real with the type of bullying, and you're more invested in the characters. (Even the villains. Like what made them turn on her? What is their motivation? )
But god DAMN does this story go HARD. Like this might be the most brutal story yet in the three volumes I've read?? Sure there are the usual supernatural elements, but I think it's still so grounded in realism that it becomes even more frightening. It's gritty and raw.
The story's ending makes sense for the moral they're trying to teach. I appreciate it, even though . I gotta say, I think the first story in the first volume and this last story in this volume have been easily my top two favs so far. This story didn't shy away from the dark reality of kids who bully and who are bullied, and the shock value of the climax wasn't really unrealistic. I LOVED the epilogue bringing up the lightning and why Nagisa might've been taken to that other world. Was a cute concept to consider.
These are stories that will definitely linger! Super glad I read this volume, very much will be continuing this series.
For Japanese Learners:
As this is a series, my thoughts are the same as volume one, which you can read more about that here.
