Walton Valley #0.5

His Wagon Train Sweetheart

Rate this book
Riding the Santa Fe Trail is a difficult and lonely profession...especially for a girl named George.

Georgianna Walton's father sat her on the back of a horse the moment she could sit up straight. Ever since, they have traveled together from one side of the country to the other with no place to call home. With no mother to guide her, George has learned everything she knows from her father, Harry, but she wants nothing more than to settle down and have a place to call home.

Elijah Mitchell is traveling to Santa Fe to take up a position as a doctor. However, when Harry has an accident on the trail, Eli cannot leave him alone on the prairie. While he ministers to the cantankerous old man, his mother begins to teach George all the things her own mother could not.

She is a wild woman from the west...he is a very proper doctor from back east—can they form the unlikeliest of partnerships out in the wild, untamed Kansas prairie?

'His Wagon Train Sweetheart' is a Christian historical novella introducing the brand new 'Walton Valley' series.

Catherine grew up reading Little House on the Prairie books, then watched it on TV. She doesn't mind admitting she had a HUGE childhood crush on Charles Ingalls :D

She also watched every episode of The Waltons ever made (she didn't count them but is pretty sure she's watched them all!!).

Next came Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman and another leading man to swoon over(!!), and a wonderful strong female leading character.

It's no wonder that Catherine chose to write Christian historical romances set in the 1860s. Join her in the fictional community of Walton Valley to follow the lives, and loves, of the settlers.

Independence, Missouri, 1867: Georgiana (George) has been raised without a mother and doesn't know much about how to act like a lady, but she can handle a team of oxen and a wagon. When she and her father agree to take city doctor Elijah Mitchell and his mother Grace in a wagon train to Sante Fe, they get more than they bargained for.

This is a nice Christian romance novella with interesting characters, a little humor, and a strong theme of trusting God. Recommend.

I enjoyed the premise of this novel and finished it very quickly. I enjoyed the dialogue, but in my opinion the characters as well as the romance could have been developed a bit more. Because the book was so easily finished, there was not a whole lot of time for me to become invested in the story. Along the same lines, the romance was veryyy fast paced and almost unrealistic in my opinion. Besides that, the novel was rather sweet.

Thank you to BookSirens, the publisher, and the author for sending me a free ARC of this novel. This has not influenced my review, which I leave here voluntarily.

Great book by an author new to me!

Loved this western story!! Catherine Kennedy is a brand new author for me, and her writing style is lovely. Georgianna made for a spunky but sweet character as a trail driver, and Eli was an interesting character as well. This is a squeaky clean historical romance, and my only complaint is that it ended much too soon. I look forward to reading more of Catherine's books very soon! Thank you the publisher, author and Booksirens for this e-book! A positive review was not required, but was gladly given. The thoughts above are my very own.

His Wagon Train Sweetheart is a very easy read. It appealed to me be because Catherine Kennedy's inspiration was Little House on the Prairie. I loved that show and the book series!

The main characters are Georgianna ( George) and her father Harry. George has been raised by her father since her mother died when she was born. She is pretty rough on the outside, but you see that she has dreams and yearns for some stability. Her traveling has not given her the chance to build friendships. She is a wagon driver, not a typical job for a woman. Eli is quite surprised by that when he and his mother Grace join them to head out to Santa Fe. Supposedly their reason for travel is his job as a doctor. Is that the only reason? You will learn more about them as the story goes along. Two brothers, Noah and Joshua, also join them.

There is an accident along the way. Harry gets hurt and cannot go on, but the rest of them have a choice. Eli stays to take care of him. Will the others stay? Will they pursue their journey at a later date?

The story reminds us that God can bring people from very different backgrounds together. I enjoyed watching their relationships bloom. I recommend reading this book and would read more by Catherine Kennedy.

Unlikely Romance

This is a clean easy reading western romance. George Walton (who is actually Georgianna) grows up without a mother raised by her father. She rides a horse, shoots a gun, wears slacks and drives oxen teams. Elijah (Eli for short) is a doctor from Boston with his proper mother going west to a job in Santa Fe. They hire George to drive their wagon.

Of course the drive doesn't go as smoothly as they wished and they must make some life choices when they become stranded in the prairie.

The book is a short introductory novella to the Walton Valley Series. It was entertaining and fun to read. Had some humor and romance in an enjoyable story. I liked the characters of Eli, George, Harry and Noah.
If you want something light and easy to sit down for an afternoon read, this book is for you. Now I am going to read the next book because I want see where it leads the characters. I recommend this book as a clean romance and enjoyable read.

Thanks to Catherine Kennedy and Book Sirens for allowing me to read a complimentary copy for my honest review.

His Wagon Train Sweetheart is a sweet novella that is the prequel to Wagon Train Wife. I thoroughly enjoyed this short story and having read the other books in the series, would love to go back and reread them with this new insight into George (Georgianna)’s and Eli’s relationship.

Raised by her father after her mother died giving birth to her, George longs to be like other women and less of a tomboy. Since her birth, she has gown up on the wagon train helping her father transport people west. When she meets the handsome Dr. Elijah Mitchell and his mother traveling to Santa Fe from Boston, she is immediately drawn to him.

Eli is attracted to George as well, but has a job waiting for him in Santa Fe and a mission to accomplish. When George’s father Harry is injured and can’t continue, they are left to fend for themselves along with Eli, his mother, Noah, and Joshua. As Eli’s feelings continue to develop for George, he must decide if he is willing to give up his plans and stay in their tiny new found community or leave on the next wagon train passing through.

I enjoyed George’s honest and forthright manner. She was feisty yet endearing. At first, Eli annoyed me because he was trifling with George’s feelings yet still maintained his desire to leave. As he changed and grew, I really began to like him. Harry and Eli’s mother Grace were both fun characters and I enjoyed their humorous insights and banter.

Definitely recommend reading this before the other books in the series. If you like inspirational western romances, you’ll enjoy this novella. Though brief, it’s a good introduction to these characters and lays a nice foundation for the books that follow. I received an advance review copy for free from Book Sirens. These are my honest opinions and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Catherine Kennedy has written a sweet book about Georgiana “George” Walton, her father, Harry and Elijah Mitchell in His Wagon Train Sweetheart.

I felt poor George’s dilemma when confronted with a gentleman she feels is way out of her league while she’s the one tasked to handle his and his mother’s wagon. George didn’t feel as if she looked like a woman, and she knew as the driver of a wagon on a wagon train, she sure didn’t act like one.

I appreciated Kennedy’s introduction to a spiritual life through Eli’s mother, Grace. She used Grace as the means to help George understand how to live a life of faith and honor to God without beating anyone, including George, over the head with her spirituality.

Reading His Wagon Train Sweetheart made me appreciate our modern conveniences while at the same time marveling at the hardiness and resilience of pioneers. The story is set in the 1800s on the Santa Fe trail and highlights some of the dangers of traveling in a wagon train.

The story is sweet and delightful, with a few lessons to be learned, like acceptance, confidence and love for one another and God.

His Wagon Train Sweetheart is a novella that introduces the new series, Walton Valley. Book 1 premiers on March 31, 2021.

I received His Wagon Train Sweetheart from Book Sirens. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

A sweet little story that has the main character in a very unusual occupation. Georgianna or George was a wagon train driver. She was confident and self assured as long as she was driving the team of oxens.

It goes to show you that everything is not what it seems. George had low self esteem. Was she pretty enough? Was she good enough? These are questions that many people ask themselves?

George's world turned upside down when she met Elijah and his mother. Elijah and Georgianna were not just on the trail outwest but on the trail of self discovery.

Enjoyable read to establish the series. Starts with the wagon train trail with Dr. Eli and his mother, Grace moving from Boston and the brothers Noah and Josh heading towards Santa Fe. George (short for Georgianna) was brought up by her father, Harry after her mother died. Harry traveled the wagon trail east and west, so Georgianna was taught everything that had to be done on the wagon trail, but Georgianna knew nothing about being a woman. Due to an accident, Harry is too injured to continue on, so the wagon train continued without them, but Dr. Eli, Grace and the brothers stayed with Georgianna and his father while he healed. Georgianna learns things about being a woman plus there's a romance grooming. Great start establishing the beginning of a series.

My rating is more like 7/10.
I wanted to read this novella to find a series that is like When Calls the Heart which I enjoyed very much.
Although, the romance was a bit too fast paced because it was a novella, I liked the writing style and the characters very much. As a non-Christian reader, I did not want to be overwhelmed with Christian themes and fortunately it was just the right dose for me.
I am certainly planning to continue with the series.

A delightful tale of two unlikely people drawn to each other. Eli is doctor and Georgiana is a rough and tough gal raised on the trail by her father. The characters are very colorful—a mixed matched group of individuals bonding on a wagon train heading west. Lots of excitement holds the reader’s attention throughout making an enjoyable read.

A home for George.
This faith-based charmer was a truly lovely piece, and I enjoyed it so much. The whole cast of characters were great there was no real villain and that was a wonderful change. Eli did need to work through some issues but I like how the author made him feel so real. I have the next two books in the series and I cannot wait to read them. I am so happy to recommend this western historical. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

A very sweet western historical romance. I enjoyed Eli and Georgianna. Eli had his mind set on one thing and it takes a lot for him to move it to something different. Georgianna, called George, never thought she'd have what other women did, a home, husband and children. It took a stubborn easterner to show her she wasn't so different after all. Engaging story with interesting characters and a satisfying ending.

A doctor and his mother are moving out west -- and the only way to get there was by wagon train. He had NO idea of what to do or what he needed. And when his driver turned out to be a woman (who dressed like a man) . . .life got VERY interesting. An accident caused them to stop. Well, some of them stopped - and the train went on. THIS was a very good book, great romance and totally unexpected things happening.

This is a sweet and quick old western read. Nice characters but too brief of a story to make them deep. But still a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours, even if it's not the kind of story that stays with you for a longer time. I got an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, which this is.

We meet Eli, George, Grace, and Harry, George’s dad, at the start of a wagon train. Eli is surprised that George, who will be driving for them, is a woman. Before they leave on the trail they meet two brothers, Joshua and Noah whom they befriend and travel with. This is their story of friendship and camaraderie that is found when people are brought together for a common goal.
This is a wonderful story of lost love, trust, learning about God, and the many types of love that is out there for all.

I enjoyed this novella very much. Georgiana Walton's mother died giving birth to her. She was called George to many people because she was raised by her father. George dressed like a boy and was doing men's work.

George was very capable of taking wagons out West. On one particular trip George met a young doctor and his mother. They were traveling to Santa Fe.

There was a mystery surrounding why Eli and his mother were heading West.

Two brothers were also on this wagon trail. They became good friends to George, Eli and Grace. They decided to stay put and stake their claims for land. The only one who was hesitant was Eli.

A sweet romance developed between Eli and George.

George or Georgiana and Elijah, theirs is a beautiful story that is so inspirational. As they traveled on the wagon train and Harry George's father got hurt, it forced them to camp for a while with a few friends while the rest moved on with the journey. It took the love care and support of Grace to transform George into a lovely woman while Eli realises that he needs her and of course the friends who were helping as they build their small community.

This is a short and sweet story that introduces a new series by Catherine Kennedy. I enjoyed stepping back in time to the year 1867 and following along on the adventure of the wagon train expedition from Independence, Missouri to the destination of Santa Fe.

The story held and captivated me. Georgianna (George) Walton, who had lost her mother at birth, had traveled her whole life with her father, Harry, all over the country. George had learned many skills from her father and could hold her own against any man. She did, however, long for a permanent home.

On this trip to Santa Fe, George was hired to drive the wagon of Elijah (Eli) Mitchell and his mother, Grace. There are many memorable moments on this journey. One is being Harry’s accident, which made it impossible for him to continue the journey. Eli, who was a doctor, cared for this gruff man. Two young men who were brothers named Joshua and Noah decided to stay and set up camp with George and her father as well as Eli and his mother.

As they all get to know each other and learn their secrets and passions, special friendships and bonds are formed. They become a family of sorts and decide to permanently settle on the land and start a village. The closeness and relationships were heartwarming. Their love for each other and how they cared enough to share the love of God in word and deed was special.

Great story Catherine! This was a delightful read. You captured the heart of a close community and the faith that made their decisions not be self-centered but of humble spirit and love. I highly recommend this book! I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is my first time reading a book written by Catherine Kennedy. When I saw that it was a short and sweet Christian book I was in to see how this story would be written.

I loved this book. There was so many details included which made me want to keep reading ( no chores done). We all need a break from reality sometimes.

As I was reading I could picture the people and their surroundings. I think many of the ways George ( Georgianna) was feeling was exactly how we feel about ourselves. I liked how the author rapped up the ending but I wonder if there will be a series for this book. If so, I’ll stand in line to read and review it.

I received this book from BookSirens. My honest review of this wonderful book.

This book follows an enjoyable story arc -- stuck together and unexpected love overcomes adversity. However, the characters seemed whiny. George whined about her identity and raising without a mother; Eli whined about his dad and the work he had to do in Santa Fe. The only character I really liked was Grace -- her wisdom and honesty would have been refreshing and bolstering in this situation. The neighbor boys were nice but poorly developed. I think this novel would have been much better had it been longer and had George had more of a backbone. She is capable. Didn't like Eli's lie of omission about his former intended. Things all wrapped up too neatly and quickly as well -- it would have been better if the characters and relationships had more time to grow and mature.

When Dr. Eli and his mother want to go west they join the wagon train and want to hire a driver. Who they get is George a girl who was raised by her port going east to west and west to east all her life. She knows how to handle oxen with the best of them she has no problem doing anything anyone else who works the trails can do what she doesn’t know how to do is fix her hair like a lady and comport her self in the same manner. That is until on The trail Her Paw gets injured and Doctor Eli and his mom decide to stay to help him get better. As others decide to build and create a life where they are Dr. Eli still talks of going to say it’s a phase, but when he finds his self falling for Georgie and then kisses her at all becomes confusing. He still says he’s going, But the memory of the look on George’s face when he told her is the one thing that’s stopping him from believing it.

I thought this was going to be like a lot of Christian westerns where a girl dresses like a boy and she refuses to change ATC I was so pleasantly surprised to see the direction the book winning not only with Georgie but Dr. Eli his mom everyone. They’re all such a likable lovable characters and I cannot wait for the next book in this new series. I love that it wasn’t a cliffhanger and The next book can start with new characters. No matter how it starts I want to be there to read it I must warn you though make sure you have time to read this book as you will not want to put it down. It is a book I highly recommend. I received this book from book sirens and I am leaving this review voluntarily because I absolutely love this book!got

His Wagon Train Sweetheart is a sweet story of a young woman that always wore pants and shirts like a man and drove wagons west in wagon trains for people that needed someone familiar with that job. George had done this since she was a young child as that is what her daddy, Harry did for a living since she was very little. But this trip was different as she was driving Eli and his mother Grace from Boston to Santa Fe as Eli was a doctor and had a job there. Grace was so kind to George that she took and made George two dresses with pants underneath so she could do her work from two of her fancy Boston dresses. Grace also taught George how to fix her hair like a woman and not like a child. She had feelings for Eli and Eli felt the same about her. Josh and Noah stayed behind with George, Grace and Eli when Harry was injured on the trail proved to be two very smart boys. They said they felt like all of them was family and Noah told George that if Eli has done any harm to her he would ride back and get the preacher. George laughed at him but could feel his concern for her. A few days later the preacher did come by and Eli took advantage of it to marry George as he had never loved anyone like he loved George. George said she hoped this trip would be a good trip, but with her Daddy getting hurt they didn't get too far, but far enough to do land claims and make a community of their own. One rooster, two cows, two oxen, and some chickens and people with huge dreams for the future may not seem like much, but it was going to become a town if the railroad came through as the boys told everyone they knew it would.

His Wagon Train Sweetheart by Catherine Kennedy was an easy Christian historical novella to read. The story starts on the Santa Fe Trail. This was the only life that George, as most people knew her, had lived. Without a mother, her father Harry took her on the trail with him because his job was a guide. George could handle most any situation that arose on the trail from cooking to driving oxen except how to be a woman.
George was hired to drive a wagon for a doctor and his mother from Boston. The doctor, Elijah Mitchell, had a job in Santa Fe and he needed to get there. Not too far into the trip, on the Kansas prairie, her father had an accident and broke his leg. It was a good thing Elijah was there because he came to the aid of Harry Walton. Harry could not fulfill his duties to the train and he and his daughter had to stay behind. Another wagon, with two brothers, Josh and Noah Prescott, stayed as well as Elijah and his mother. Elijah stayed because of the seriousness of the injured leg with the understanding that he would go to Santa Fe once Harry’s leg was healed.
George in the meantime had befriended Grace Mitchell and taught her how to prepare meals on the prairie since Grace had innocently offered to cook for the men but did not have the first clue as to what to do. George wanted to know from Grace how to be more of a woman and live more as Georgianna rather than George.
This is the first book in a series about Walton Valley. I look forward to reading future books that take place in this valley.

This novella is a sweet, clean tale of George Walton and HER father Harry who lead wagon trains west from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico in the 1860’s. George, or Georgianna, has been raised by her father after the loss of her mother and a baby brother in childbirth. The story begins with the departure of a wagon train and shortly thereafter a serious accident involving Harry.

Dr. Elijah (Eli) Mitchell and his mother are traveling in the wagon being driven by George and he attends to Harry’s very serious injury. It is determined that Harry is unable to continue with the train and a small group decide to stay with him and George until he heals and another train comes along. The group of six, which includes brothers Noah and Josh, quickly establish some basic living quarters. George’s tomboy tendencies are not a deterrent to Eli, but there are secrets in Eli’s family that could derail their budding romance.

I received a free ARC of this book from Book Sirens for my honest voluntary review. It is a quick, charming story with a touch of humor and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Delightful Story of Finding Love on a Wagon Train

Georgiana and her father had been dependent on one another since her mother died when she was a young child. As they prepare for a wagon train trek to Santa Fe, they had no thoughts of splitting up so she could marry. They had always been together. Georgiana drove a wagon and her father was the trail boss.

Georgiana was thinking of marriage and family and her father thought of her as his little girl. A doctor was on this wagon train to Santa Fe, planning to set up a medical practice. Because of an accident, Georgiana's father suffered a broken leg, and many of the travelers decided to travel on, leaving Georgiana, her father, the doctor and his mother, and a few travelers to follow on when they could.

Love developed and we have a new edge to our story. Read this book to get the details. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

After being in a reading slump for months, I came across Wagon Train Wife. Since I loved The Oregon Trail Romance collection, I thought I would give this one a shot. Before reading, I discovered there was a prequel to this book - His Wagon Train Sweetheart. I knew that would be a great place to start to help me out of my funk. Also, being world book day, I knew there would be no better time than the present to start reading again.

His Wagon Train Sweetheart, although written as a novella, was a beautifully written story about unlikely acquaintances you will meet and the relationships formed while travelling along the wagon train. This short story is sweet and refreshing. It is easy to follow, captivating and keeps you smiling.

His Wagon Train Sweetheart is about Elijah (Eli) Mitchell, a doctor riding in a wagon train to Santa Fe for a job, his mother Grace who is traveling with him, Georgianna (George) Walton, and her father Harry. Georgianna and Harry have been traveling the Santa Fe trail, leading wagon trains and buying and selling goods, all of George’s life and she is ready to settle down. Eli and George are smitten with each other. Life circumstances make them reevaluate what is important to them.

This book is a sweet, short, Christian book that will make you feel good. It is clean, with only one brief kiss. The plot was interesting and kept me interested. The characters were relatable, the world building easy to follow, and it was well edited. I definitely recommend this book for fans of clean romance along the wagon trains of an era gone by.
