Portrayal is book one in the Whiskey Promises series by up and coming author A.R Thomas.

Whilst on a photography job, Gallery owner Lily meets the mysterious and alluring architect Jase Beckett - her new client and all doesn’t go to plan. Expect a lot of push and pulling between our main characters with a burst of sizzling chemistry. As I believe this is book one of a trilogy, Portrayal really sets the foundations to Jase and Lily’s instant attraction and the start of their relationship. There are many skeletons in the closet that will appear I feel in the next instalments.
What is Jase’s history? And why is he so possessive and protective of Lily, who herself is dealing with the aftermath of a very destructive relationship in the past.

I did feel frustrated at times with some of Lily’s decisions to begin with, but as the story unfolds you do kind of get the understanding as to why.

This is all told via Lily’s POV, so we hear her thoughts throughout. Whiskey eyed Jase is in the same league of some very possessive alpha males that we have read and loved over the years. I did like his character very much and it would have been nice to be in his head at times, I do love a duel POV.

Good supporting characters such as Cass and Sean, for a debut novel, this was a good start to the series and written very well.

Extremely repetitive, and really, nothing happens. He pursues her like crazy and she repeatedly pushes him away. They hook up, she runs away, he chases after her and convinces (no, forces) her to be with him. Rinse and repeat. That’s it, that’s the entire book. Her constant pushing away got annoying. I actually questioned if she even loved him. I skimmed quite a bit, slowing down only during interactions between H/h. Any time the h was interacting with secondary characters, I sped up, because I honestly didn’t care. The h had the tendency of rehashing everything that just happened, to her friend. Why do authors do this? The only reason I kept reading is because of the H. He was obsessed with and extremely possessive of the h. He reminded me of Christian Grey. Toxic fictional men are my jam. The sexy times were quite enjoyable. The main reason I kept going was the promise of angst (with OW drama and cheating). It sucks that I had to wait until 70% of BOOK TWO(!) to get it. Lucky for me, it was worthwhile. It was fantastic, in fact. I absolutely loved the grovel! But all this should have been one book, not two. I’m not sure what to rate this but I’ll go with 3 Stars for now.

DNF a couple chapters in.
The FMC honestly instantly got on my nerves because this man simply walked into a room and all of a sudden you don’t know how to function???
Legs shaking, can’t form sentences all just from gazing upon his face??? Girl stand up.
You could tell that he was gonna have her wrapped around his finger in no time and that’s a no for me.

DNF…Weak heroine who thinks is a badass but is dumb. I swear, didn’t take 10 pages for me to know that this book was no good, I knew that it wasn’t for me… didn’t like the writing and the characters. The heroine is so annoying, I can’t! In the beginning, she says that she thinks is funny how the other women feel threatened by her, BUT the MOMENT and I mean the moment she sees the other women she doesn’t like her (for no reason)… what?. All the time she says how the hero is an as*hole, but also don’t stop saying how hot he is.

Also, the heroine was supposed to be professional…I think the author wanted to make a strong character but failed… 0.5 star

ps: sorry if I said something grammatically wrong.. English is not my first language

☆ Arc received in exchange for an honest review.

☆ I had a good time reading the book. A change from what I normally read and a good one for that. There were some points in the book that were definitely a little on the bore side for me personally but I loved this book and would love to read more from the author. I realise this is the debut book so by far it is really good for a debut book.

The good:

So, I really quite liked Lily and Jace's characters as people. They were quite interesting and Lily was really mature and wasn't a doormat which I always love. There were moments when I felt like she was too stubborn but considering her past it really was a reasonable reaction.

The sub characters were very intriguing too. I feel like Cass and Zara might have their own books or maybe that's just me begging the author to give us a book on Zara. Travis, Sean and Hat were also quite lovable. Hat was a character that I really, really liked. She was such a sweet and lovable person.

The romance/stubborn element. So, there were some things that I really liked about the romance element. I like how they refer to each other as partners and how they were honest to each other. I can see that it needs more development but overall I liked and would love to see it develop and enhance more. They were quite lovable at times and I can see them as an old ornery married couple.

The storyline was quite interesting, the photographer and the architect was really something I hadn't seen before and it had me going throughout the book.

I loved the British writing, it was so nice and didn't feel americanised, probably because the author must be actually British. I saw it as  a trigger but I honestly picked it up due to the very reason. She nailed it and I love the writing.

The bad

Character Development – So, my main issue with the book was the character development, even though I enjoyed Jace and Lily, I feel like we got no insight on Jace at all, he was quite overshadowed in Lily's voice with no actual storyline, like all we know about him is that he is an architect and a playboy. And Lily's past could have been a little more explored in the book.

Cass – Ok I really, really might be biased [I am actually, fuck reviews should be critical not biased!] but I didn't like her in the first half of the book. It felt weird that she barely knew Jace and yet sent a drunk Lily home with him multiple times. Weird to say the least. I liked her a lot more in the second half. She was supportive of Lily and was always there for her. I love the little sneak peak we have on her and Sean. [An idea–WRITE A BOOK ON THEM ;)]

The pacing and … – The pacing was kind of weird in a few places. And the initial chapters were a bit off. As a debut book its fucking perfect, a lot better than many I have read and I give the author the benefit of doubt but the weird swoony way Lily always got around Jace was so cliche and off putting. I'm so glad the author got rid of it by the quarter mark.

☆ Rating: 3.8/5

☆ I enjoyed the book and would love to read more from her, even though I see some things that can be improved. Overall it is a really great read for a debut. Recommended to people who like a little light hearted contemporary romance.

Happy release day to the beautiful A.R. Thomas!

'He is the one hurtling us along—I don't think I will ever manage to catch up.'

Portrayal is a wonderful, romantic, and steamy, story about the spunky Lily Spencer and the enigmatic Jace Bennett.
After the two of them meet, they can't deny the chemistry between them.
But will Lily forever run away?
Or will Jace capture her and keep her forever?

Honestly, if you loved Fifty Shades, Crossfire or the This Man series, then Portrayal is totally up your alley!

Portrayal is this author’s Debut novel. I must say, what a great effort from this Author.

When Lily takes on a photography job, to photograph a stunning house designed by the architect Jase Bennett, she is blown away by the chemistry batting between them, and the feelings he provokes within her, on their first meet.

Lily isn’t looking for any type of relationship, she is still getting over her toxic relationship with her ex. But Jase Bennett has different ideas. He’s not what you call experienced in the relationship department, he’s more off a, love em an leave em type. But Lily has also provoked some usual feelings within in Jase, too. So the pursuit beginnings...

The first half of this book is a slow burn, the chase. Despite Jase’s advances, Lily keeps knocking Jase back. I must say, at times I was getting a bit impatient with Lily.
The second half of the book picks up pace, and we get to witness Lily giving it a go with Jase.

We are only fed little tip bits on Jase, and I feel there is so much more to learn and find how about him ...he can’t be that normal, it can’t be that easy can it? There’s got to be something else about him, some skeletons he’s hiding maybe?
He’s definitely the dominant type, especially in the bedroom. Which I must say, the sex scenes was very enjoyable lol, written well. But I also found him quite sweet.

The secondary characters were very likeable too. Cass, Lily’s best friend is a hoot, they are a right pair of lushes, lol.

I look forward to finding out what is in store for this couple in book two.
Overall a well written debut book. Enjoyed it.

I honestly don’t know what I just read… it’s basically 300 pages of Jace and Lily going back and forth. Jace is obsessive — borderline psycho at times. The whole book is just them meeting, having crazy chemistry, he wants her, she gives in, then changes her mind.

There’s mention of her abusive ex, Adam — we know there’s a restraining order, but nothing really happens with that storyline. She owns an art gallery. Jace has a female childhood friend that Lily thinks is into him, but apart from a few rude moments, nothing major comes from that either.

Then the book ends after they have rough sex that makes Lily uncomfortable. She asks for space, he loses it and smashes his window — proving her point about his temper. And that’s it… the end.

We were introduced to loads of side characters but none of their stories actually went anywhere. Now I have to read book 2, but seriously… what even was that?!

I really liked the writing style of this author, it was a good debut but there are some things that needs improvment. I liked Jace as a Hero, he's not my favorite but I liked the idea that he was chasing Lily all the time. Lily is a bit frustrating and too resistant for my liking but she has her reasons, just not my favorite heroine. I know the 2nd book will be better as the story unfolds more there. Let's see how their love story will conclude!

Okay wow that was a ride!

Lily is so cute, soft and loving. Jace is cocky but has a sweet side somewhere there, being almost the exact opposite. They have this instant attraction and there's just something more between those two from the start. I felt it all, oh how I did.

They can't get enough of each other although Lily keeps pushing Jace away not wanting to let him in. She is super stubborn about it; there were times when I was like GIRL let him be there for you but also at the same time I loved how she is guarded and doesn't fall for him immediately, especially since she recently got out of an abusive relationship. I loved that she doubts and worries, which is really realistic.

That doesn't stop Jace from trying though, and I loved him for it. I loved how he keeps fighting for her and is there for her when she is ready. On the other hand, he is a little too possessive in this kind of shady way, and it makes you question him and his intentions, which I loved because it gives this mysterious aspect into the story, giving that maybe-everything-isn't-as-it-seems feeling.

Oof the tension between Jace and Lily was something else, I was all here for it. The banter, the looks and the small touches before everything else, I lived for. There's nothing like this tension between two people and then them slowly acting on it chapter by chapter. Wow so well done, I adored the writing so much.

That ending though, oh damn. I'm slightly going insane, I need to know more! This is such a good book that kept me hooked and I can't wait to see how Lily and Jace's story will unfold!

"I don't want slow Lily. I want to hurtle along with you."

Portayal is book 1 of the Whiskey Promises Series by new up and coming author A.R. Thomas. Portrayal looks to be her first release. This new adult, contemporary romance focuses on Jace Bennett and Lily Spencer.

Lily is independent, smart, a business owner, sassy, and can give as good as she gets. She has a lot of personal issues from her past that only her BFF knows about. She's keeping a lot of secrets from Jace and when her past comes back to haunt her it may just blow up in her face.

Jace is an alpha and sometimes it can ve overbearing. He has control issues, jealousy issues, and quite the temper. But he also loves hard and when he's all in he means it. His feelings for Lily have become borderline obsessive. Have is an enigma, it appears he may have a lot of skeletons in his closet but we don't discover in any this book.

These two are quite the pair. They are both stubborn and crazy about each other. Although Lily tries to fight it, there is no stopping Jace and their chemistry and lust ultimately wins out. Their journey has been full of chase, tension, arguments, secrets, mistrust, jealousy and lots of sex. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?

This story was entertaining but a bit predictable. It honestly reminded me of the This Man series. The supporting characters were fun and contributed to a lot of funny moments. I have a strong interest in Cass and Sean as well as Harriet. Carl was a hoot, I loved his personality. This story does end in a cliff hanger so there's a lot to come in the next book, we've only just scratched the surface.

The story could be really good with a decent editor and beta readers. It felt like it was going somewhere when in fact, it just bumbled along not really going anywhere at all. The h gets drunk a lot, she's indecisive and flaky. The H seems like a good guy. Lord knows why he wants to be with the h. I really wanted to love it, but it reminded me of too many other books and characters and was no where near their standards.

Portrayal, debut novel by A.R. Thomas, is book one in the Whiskey Promises series. Portrayal follows Lily Spencer, an art gallery owner and budding photographer, and Jace Bennet, renowned architect. Lily and Jace are two people who are different, but similar at the same time. Both have dark pasts and secrets that threaten their new relationship. They explore intense feelings and a new romance which leaves them questioning things they thought they knew. Lily’s past and the fact that she is recovering from a failed relationship have left her broken and distrusting of men. When Lily and Jace meet there’s an initial attraction from both, but Lily is hesitant to pursue anything with Jace. Jace on the other hand has never been in a relationship, but he knows when he meets Lily that he can’t let her go. As the book progresses and Lily and Jace enter this relationship we learn small details about them which ultimately may make or break their relationship.

Portrayal is full of angst, sizzling chemistry, secrets, and an intense romance. Lily and Jace attempt to fully commit to this relationship and they actually work well together. Both are stubborn and slightly off-kilter. Lily is strong, independent, sassy, and can hold her own against the alpha male, possessive Jace. This story was entertaining and I enjoyed seeing the relationships the main characters had with other characters. This book is from Lily's point of view, so we only see her side of things, however, I wish we had more insight into both Jace and Lily’s pasts. There was a bit of mystery surrounding these characters and I hope it gets explored in the following book. The pace of this novel was slow in some parts, but the climax and the pacing from then until the end captivated my attention. This book ends on a cliffhanger and I’m curious to see how it all plays out.

Overall this is a really great debut novel, it is well-written, descriptive, and has unique characters. I am definitely intrigued to learn more about these characters in book two of the Whiskey Promises series, Betrayal. I really need to know more about these characters and the fate of their relationship.

Portrayal is the debut novel from A.R. Thomas and what a way to kick off a writing career. Having read the blurb to Portrayal I was intrigued to see how this author was going to with her very first duet.

The main characters Lily and Jace have a chemistry that you can feel from the get go but each character has a history that we learn as the story develops. History that makes this relationship so much harder to establish but each character can’t fight the chemistry that they have.

While Lily and Jace’s chemistry is explosive, neither characters are willing to give up control or their independence and as the story develops you get an understanding as to why each character is fighting for control.

Portrayal is the first book in A.R. Thomas Whiskey Promises, so naturally this book left us on a cliff hanger, one that was brilliant. I can’t wait to see how this author will finish Lily and Jace’s journey.

I loved this book. I don’t see what the bad reviews are about. I feel like the last two years. Everything is Insta love and while there was attraction off the bat with these two, I loved both Lily and Jace‘s characters. She pulls back from him immediately slight spoiler if you will, but she has her own reasons that you come to find out about throughout the book. This was 🥵 but it also had a great storyline as well as the second book to this that I’ll be writing a review about afterwards if you’re looking for a book with a great storyline, a feisty heroine, and an alpha male who is also sweet then this is the book for you. They have great banter, and I love the secondary characters as well. They make the story just as special. I rarely give out five star reviews but it’s well deserved. I spent the whole night reading this book till finished. I wish more books were written this way.

This is a heartwarming debut novel by AR Thomas! The story is about Lily a photographer whose past relationship haunts her and Jase an devilishly handsome architect who hires her.
They have instant connection and electrifying chemistry. Jase is an possessive alpha male who has his charming ways and won't stop till he gets what he wants which is Lily.
The story was engaging and made me swoon a lot of times. There were scenes which made me laugh and smile so wide because all the characters even the supporting ones were very likable.
I recommend this book and am looking forward to see what the author has in store for them in the next book hopefully with Jase's POV.

I'm not the best at writing reviews but I wanted to do this for Rachel. While Portrayal is a debut novel, I assure you the writing is so smooth and super on point. You could literally see the scenes unfold in front of your eyes.

Jace and Lily are very different from the characters I read before, their backgrounds, their jobs and their demons. I get to appreciate the work of an architect and see from the eyes of a photographer, something that makes this book unique and stand out from the others.

The thing that made me fall in love with this duet is the way it makes me feel. Both Jace and Lily could be so stubborn at times, you wish you could be there in person to talk some sense into them. You may be able to predict what is about to happen, but still it doesn’t stop the heartache. Particularly ⅔ into Betrayal, the second book, I swear I feel like my heart is being ripped into pieces (no spoilers here). Despite the trauma Lily went through, she is a strong character who I look up to especially when it comes to protecting someone she loves. I feel like I learned to love all over again through flipping through the pages.

Without a shadow of a doubt, I will give this duet a 5/5. I hope you’ll enjoy this journey as much I do and I can’t wait to know what Escape the Light is all about x

I received an arc of Portrayal, and to put it frankly, to say I enjoyed it is too subtle. This novel had me, hook, line and sinker.

The flow of the writing is so strong and seamless, Jace and Lily were everything the story needed and it was instantly gripping. I just genuinely can’t believe this is a debut, it completely consumed me!

Trying to keep this spoiler free, because on February 18th you can immerse yourself in the world of Jace and Lily! And trust me, you're going to want to do that!

The run down, I found Lily to be surprisingly complex, on one hand she's painfully relatable, she tries to lead a very easy life, she chugs wine, watches bridget Jones and has done the classic "I've sworn off men!" But on the other hand she is strong, sassy, and my goodness is she stubborn! I outwardly yelled at my kindle "GET A GRIP AND DO IT FOR WOMEN EVERYWHERE!" Ok, so her stubborness is justified, but she struggles to open up and express it and come on, who would deny someone like Jace over and over again?!

Jace is... officially mine so back off... initially cocky and arrogant, the classic pretty and he knows it, and my lord is he pretty! But there's so much depth to him and he is surprisingly beyond sweet, affectionate, loving and he his humor in those carefree moments with Lily had me cracking up. It feels like he's got this constant inner battle going on and he can't understand what is going on which made me feel surprisingly empathetic towards an alpha male character who i didn't expect to feel that way towards.

A snippet of my favourite moment that had me swooning:
"2am is my favourite part of the day, the world is quiet and it is just us for a while"

I loved their relationship, I can only describe it like an inferno, once it caught the blaze it was intense and fiery!

A.R Thomas, what a beauty of a first novel!

Well, we were sent this book over to read and review so thank you A.R. Thomas for trusting us in doing that.

This book follows the story of Jace Bennet cocky Architect and Lily Spencer determined photographer and gallery owner.

Lily has had a rough past with family and an ex-boyfriend, she is determined to make her life better and on a job she meets Jace Bennet, self assured ,handsome, arrogant and very possessive, But overall Lily's eyes couldn’t believe just how handsome Jace is. Whilst taking pictures of a house that Jace has designed lily takes sight of him in her lense and cannot believe how beautiful this man is even though he has left her waiting for their meeting. When Jace finally graces Lily with his presence they are both taken with each other but then it becomes clear Jace has just had a rendezvous with another female whilst he should have been in a meeting with Lily. Lily has feelings that she never thought she would be getting especially for a man she has only just met and can’t leave quick enough.

Jace must be taken with Lily because he constantly persues her and tries to break down her walls into going for dinner with him but Lily constantly shuts him down with a no even when she really wants to. After all of her denials, Jace wins out and they end up dating but Jace is very over baring And there is a lot of pushing and pulling within their relationship.

This book ends on a cliff hanger.

I really enjoyed reading this book the characters all fit well together and the author gives you just enough information to keep you guessing but not enough to give everything away. I’m so glad I have the next book to read as I may have gone out of mind with the cliff hanger ending.

First things first, this book was off the charts hot. The chemistry between Lily and Jace was instantaneous and highly combustible.

Lily is just recovering from a relationship that was abusive by all accounts when she meets Jace. While she is attracted to him, she wants to hate him with his arrogance and womanising ways but temptation is too much. Jace has never felt such a connection to anyone before meeting Lily but he knows that he wants her in his life and for more than a one night stand.

Whilst Jace is certainly rich, hot, and fantastic in the bedroom, relationships and the way that he feels about Lily are very new to him. His behaviour will be controversial and certainly made me feel uncomfortable and cautious towards their relationship. Lily is afraid of committing to another relationship and when things become too personal she runs.

I feel emotionally drained after reading this, having run the gauntlet of emotions as the story unfolded. These characters were realistic and imperfect with the flaws that make us human. Whilst this was, at times, difficult to read I am glad I stuck with it. I will be eagerly waiting for the continuation of their story.

So ... this book.

Literally had me squirming in my seat. In a good way. If you know you know.

I can sometimes find these sorts of books a little bit too much. Too much sex not enough depth to the characters, but the author got the balance perfect. Enough to make the book swoon worthy but not so much it became boring and predictable. It’s a hard balance to get right and a sign of a really talented writer when they get it.

Another sign of a good writer ... when they have you tearing your hair out in frustration one minute, laughing out loud the next, weeping five minutes later.

This book had all the feels and so much more. What I loved the most ... how flawed the characters were. They were as real as life gets, the journey they went on and still have to navigate was wonderful to read and the author tackled a hard subject really well and showed the long term implications of someone who has suffered abuse perfectly. People don’t just snap back and are ok, they don’t run off into the sunset with Prince Charming (although I hope they do in Betrayal) and that’s what made this book so good. That it was real.

Highly recommended if you love angst, drama and lots of sex but something with just a little bit more.

This had potential and very much needed an editor before it was published.

It was so repetitive the same thing over and over, her not wanting him but also can't get over how hot is and deep down wants him and him being pushing as hell but all sweet. This was mega insta love/lust because this girl acted like a complete moron the first time she met him it was as if she's never met a handsome ass man before in her life not to mention him being an ass the first time they meet but some how cant help this strong attraction he has towards her.

I'm usually okay with insta lust or love if done right but this just didn't work at all.

The h was literally 90% of the book always getting drunk as fuck and then the H who has a weird ass relationship with his friend who is a woman.

I couldn't connect to any of the characters let alone the main characters. You don't actually get to know them really, besides finding that they completely fuxking toxic together mind you she just came out of a toxic relationship 6months before meeting him and and she hasn't even know him that long.

honestly my ass is gonna read book 2 because I need to see how this ends with the side piece of a bestbfriend of the H.

4 “whiskey and grey” stars!

portrayal is new and upcoming indie author, a.r. thomas’ debut novel, and what a lovely one it is! this is a heartwarming, angsty read that’ll certainly garner some laughs and tears and heartbreak and swooning. ar’s writing is smooth, slick and seamless, i didn’t realize i had reached the end of the story until i turned the page to realize well... that was it! it consumed me!

jase bennett is unrelenting in his pursuit of gallery owner, lily spencer. they meet when she’s on a photography job to meet jase, an architect at his place and from the moment they meet, sparks fly!

it broke my heart to see lily battle her demons especially from her last relationship as she has a push and pull with jase and wonders if she can truly trust him. but i know jase isn’t as angelic to be. i cannot wait to find out what lurks in his darkness in book two and hopefully his pov!

while we read through a lot of back and forth from our characters (given this is a slow burn) it was quite lovely to see the little moments in between when lily accepted nothing existing in the world but her and jase.

be ready to indulge yourself in this beautiful novel on february 18th!
