I'm new to Drarry. When I started this fic I was amazed by the quality, the characterisation was perfect, it didn't feel like reading a fanfiction. I loved the similarities as well as the differences from canon.
I couldn't wait to read this third tome and I feel... meh?
I think the storytelling wasn't as good as the previous ones. It was a bit sloppy. And it's a shame, considering the plot of the Prisonner of Azkaban was so well done.
What makes me say that: (spoilers)
- Draco hiding everything from everyone: I am alrigth with the fact that Draco HAS to lie and have secrets, but sometimes it's just too much and so fustrating. And the revelations aren't always satisfying (like revealing to the wrong person) or they end up being more lies (not always necessary).
- Arguing with the trio: The unending bickering was a bit annoying, it lasted too long. Yes, in the original books, the arguments happened between Hermione and the boys, but it wasn't as much of a weight in the plot. AND we already went through that in the previous tome when they believed Draco was the Heir. Sometimes I am annoyed that Draco won't call the boys "friends" but how could he, they spend only 2 months out of 10 being nice to each other? I like their Drarry dynamic, but after around 300 000 words, you'd expect they have more interaction with each other, even friendly ones.
- It's long: That shouldn't be a problem, except like as said: so many lies and bickering for not much happening. A lot of big paragraphs that are not necessary sometimes (I couldn't care less about football). Also, sometimes things happen, they're not very important but I figured "well it's alright, it will be usefull later on", and it's not. Some events could have been told in fewer words and there is a lack of satisfying scene (to cope with the lenght).
- The action: The fights are so long, I had to skip most of them, but sometimes I would miss one important sentence lost in a paragraph and had to go back. Also, there are long period of times where nothing much happen, and when there is action, it's either too heavy (like I explained previously) OR it is told by another character. I'm okay with Draco not being there for every bits, but it often feels like 'I didn't want to write this part so I got rid of it that way'.
The plot: I love the PoA. I was okay with following this plot (The Shrieking Shack>Revelations>Werewolf Lupin>Dementors>Time-turner) as well as changing it. But first, I didn't like the ending (I'll tell more about it in the next point). Then, the way to come to it wasn't satisfying either. Draco gets all the information about the Marauders and Sirius' innocence in one go at Christmas, has little reaction to it, and not much happen to GET to the ending. There's not much cause and effect, and there's no investigation since Draco learns everything months before the ending. What is good with the PoA plot was the friendship, the betrayals, the echoes to the past, the effect it had on Harry. Since it can't have an effect to Draco, it would have been nice to see Draco react to it through Harry. To be here when Harry learns Sirius is his godfather, to discover together the nicknames, etc. When a Main character doesn't care about what he discovers, it is hard for the Reader to care as well.
-The ending/Snape: Sorry to say, it felt sloppy. Not because the writer didn't care: it probably was difficult to write and I can feel it. But it didn't work. Like:
---Draco gathering everyone to the big revelation about Wormtail: it would have been better if a series of action had led them all to this point. It felt random, Draco sending Pansy fetch everyone. And the place, Severus chamber's, was a bit boring.
---Severus Snape: Like, I'm okay with Severus ruining everything and betraying Draco, but what the hell? Attacking students? He was so out of character in the end, Severus casting spells on Luna, Draco, bringing dementors (a LOT! why so MANY?) in the corridors? And his "redemption" when he comes to save Sirius, it was so weird. He's not the companion I wanted for Draco for the Grand finale, for one, and why would he explain himself to Dumbledore?
---Where is Dumbledore? He sure is aware of everything, isn't he?
---A lot happens when Draco is unconscious and is told by Severus, and it was so chaotic and not epic. And sometimes I was bewildered, I still don't understand the cake explosion thing with Crabbe and Goyle.
---Lupin helping Black escape, fighting Dumbledore and McGonagall (ughh) and nothing is held against him? No consequences?
- The characters: I love them, Ron is perfectly Ron, Hermione is the cutest, Draco is amazing and funny. Actually, in the two first tomes, everyone was well written, give or take a few elements (like Snape being bi, doesn't make sense, does nothing to the plot, no reason for Draco to bring it on the table). BUT in this one, as I reached the end of the book, I wasn't so sure anymore. It was good at the begining, but then Snape is doing this nonsense, Harry is a bit weak in moments he shouldn't be, Lupin and Sirius are soapy (and I'm a wolfstar fan). Draco doesn't feel like he is an adult anymore. Sometimes that can make sense, with the hormones and everything, but sometimes, he looks more like another kid than Draco as a kid. Especially at the very end, it doesn't seem like Draco talking anymore.
So... Yeah.
This time round, it DID feel like a fanfiction, and it seemed like the writing lacked planning. If I was an editor I would say "alright I like the idea, now start over and retell the story differently".
There were good things of course.
-Harry in love with Draco and Draco oblivious
-Actually, Draco's point of view being so mistaken but you can still understand when he is wrong
-Sweet moments between Draco and his friends, though there's not a lot. They're so cute. I love the scene in the hospital wing.
-Hermione and Ron are well written
-Draco's funny and nobody understand his humor so it makes him funnier.
-Theo. I love him, I don't know why.
-It was in the previous tome but, the "Granger shrine" is hilarious.
But I'm not sure I'm going to continue.
