Ви думаєте, що вже все-все знаєте про Різдво?
Ой, давайте без оцього..)) Вам теж треба прочитати цю книжку, бо точно знайдете для себе щось цікаве й нове.😉
Ви взагалі вважаєте себе атеїстом і оце все точно не для вас?
Але ж гляньте, яка гарна ця книжка. Прочитайте. Це не страшно й ні до чого не зобов’язує 😉

«Велика різдвяна книжка» - можна сказати, енциклопедія Різдва.
Цікава, гарна, затишна й повчальна.
Не перевантажена занадто розумними текстами, а навпаки, доступно й цікаво розказує про історію Різдва.
🎄Завдяки Кому ми маємо таке свято.
🎄Коли вперше почали святкувати.
🎄Хто це започаткував. Як святкували.
🎄Як видозмінювалося свято і як його намагалися знищити.
🎄Звідки взялися символи свята, які нам вже добре знайомі.
І ще багато цікавого.

Було цікаво, яким буде дует одної з най світліших письменниць України з серйозним істориком.
І він вийшов прекрасним.
Беріть чай/какао/глінтвейн, вмикайте різдвяну музику й читайте цю книжку.
Я реально залипла в ній і прочитала, не дочекавшись Різдва.

Дочитуючи книгу полізла на Якабу подивитись як називається українське видання і виявила, що оригінальна книга десь на 80 сторінок довша, ніж англомовна версія. У англомовній відсутні чи об'єднані та скорочені розділи про Різдво за Гітлера, Різдво в часи СРСР, Різдво в наплічнику, різдвяну квітку і це ще не повний перелік.
В цілому книга оповідає про історію Різдва загалом і різних його атрибутів таких як щедрівки і колядки, вертеп, пост та святкова вечеря, і звісно святих які приносять подарунки під ялинку. Та в кожному розділі є акцент на те, що виокремлює святкування Різдва в Україні іноді протиставляючи тому як це відбувається в рф. Та як на мене цього мало для того, щоб книга відповідала англомовній назві "A Ukrainian Christmas".
Саме видання я можу тільки похвалити, бо такого цупкого паперу я ще ніде не бачила, якість друку і ілюстрацій на висоті.
В цілому може бути не поганим подарунком на Різдво чи Новий рік.

Книга мені дуже сподобалось. Видавництво зробило дві версії - подарункове видання та дешевше видання маленького формату. Я купила цей "скромніший" варіант, але і він був просто шикарним - гарні кольорові ілюстрації на більшості сторінок, дуже приємна на дотик обкладинка з блискучими буквами. Браво!

Щодо контенту - я не назвала б книгу дитячою, мені як дорослій людині читати було абсолютно цікаво. Автори розказали про релігійні корені свята, аналогічні свята в інших віросповіданнях, поширені різдвяні символи та традиції та як вони змінювались крізь століття, закінчуючи розділом про часи блекаутів минулого року. Про релігійну сторону свята написано з симпатією, без великого акцента на сучасному комерційно-світському варіанті свята (хоча він теж згадується).

Мова у авторів цікава, я побачила деякі незвичні для себе, хоч і одразу зрозумілі, слова - "абищиця", "поганський" (в значенні язичницький, pagan), "світова потуга" і т.п. Це прикольно.

З мінусів - і це мене дуже засмутило - було багато одруківок. Як на мене, якщо вже зробили таку класну та дорогу книжку, в такому шикарному виданні, то вичитати нормально вже можна було?! Серйозно. В основному помітила пропущені пробіли, через які сусідні слова зливались одне, плюс раз один і той самий абзац був повторений двічі підряд.

A celebration of Ukrainian and Christmas traditions in the face of adversity.

From the very first page it’s obvious that A Ukrainian Christmas is a very special book. I’m going to be honest and say that by the time I’d read the dedication and Foreword, before I’d even turned another page, I was in pieces. However, A Ukrainian Christmas is not a maudlin or depressing book. Far, far from it. I think it can be summed up by Nadiyka Gerbish’s comment ‘…our current suffering is not in vain, and there is still hope even in the midst of the greatest crisis.’

A Ukrainian Christmas is glorious. It doesn’t shy away from reality, but rather celebrates life, the world and Christmas in all its facets. Between the pages of this book lies history, geography, folklore, food, challenge, humanity, hope and love. There’s everything from Cromwell’s banning of carol singing, through traditional Ukrainian recipes, to Marxism so that it is a cornucopia of treasure for all readers. A Ukrainian Christmas educates, explores and entertains.

Aside from the eclectic and fascinating topics, what makes A Ukrainian Christmas so fabulous is the range of beautiful illustrations. Some are more simple, some totally sumptuous but all add quality and value to the writing. I loved the fact that there are proper biographies of the illustrators as well as the authors in the back of the book too. The physical attributes of the book; its size, the robust cover with gold lettering and so on, lend it an excellence that enhances the contents still further.

I think reading A Ukrainian Christmas ensures the reader remembers the true value of home and family. It celebrates hope and joy even in the darkest of times. Hugely affecting, interesting and compelling with a visual and literary beauty, A Ukrainian Christmas would make a wonderful gift. I thought it was excellent.

Ця книга справжня енциклопедія про Різдво. В ній ви знайдете багато теорій та міфів, коли почалося Різдво, як саме це відбулося, а також всі інші атрибути — колядки, щедрівки, різдвяний стіл, адвент-календар, вертеп та багато іншого. А від Діда Мороза ви маленькими кроками перейдете до Сталіна та Різдва в часи СРСР. І якщо вам не вистачає музикальної хвилинки, то про гурт Бітлз в книзі ви також прочитаєте.

Багато чого я вже знала, дещо відкрила для себе. Деякі моменти були цікаві, деякі викликали негативні емоції.

Книга інформативна та гарно проілюстрована. За оформлення однозначно 5, за інформацію від мене 3.

Якщо ви хочете різдвяного настрою та якоїсь магії, то це не про цю книгу.
Якщо ви хочете розширити свої знання про Різдво через призму релігійних та історичних фактів, тоді зверніть увагу на цю книгу.

This was a delightful book to read this time of year and it contains a lot more than Xmas from a Ukrainian perspective. The illustrations are beautiful and evocative and compliment the text very well. The book covers aspects of Christmas i.e. Food, Carols, Nativity, the Tree, St Nicholas, Bans and Truces. It looks at local customs not just from Ukraine but from all over Europe and around the world suggesting origins for much of what we do at Christmas. It’s a wonderful book to own that is very easily read by adults and children and also a lovely reference to Xmas traditions plus a reminder of what horrors the people of Ukraine are having to endure in this season of goodwill.

Книга складається з маленьких історій про різні атрибути Різдва, колядки, адвент-календарі, ялинка, вертеп і так далі, там все ніби чудово.

Кошмар починається з історії «Різдвяне перемир’я», там автори наводять різні приклади ситуацій, щоб показати як магічна сила Різдва може змусити во��огуючі сторони припинити вогонь на вечір, одним з таких прикладів була згадка про унікальний факт перемир’я воїнів УПА та червоноармійців, далі цитата:

Під час Другої світової війни такі історії були неможливими. По-перше, обидві сторони вели війну на знищення одна одної, а по-друге, у Червоній армії святкування Різдва було немислиме. Проте збереглася згадка про один епізод із перших повоєнних років, коли вояки УПА («бандерівці») на Закерзонні (українських землях, які опинилися на польському боці) влаштували перемир’я із солдатами червоної армії. Це є у спогадах Нати Ленко: «На Святий Вечір в одній з хат випадково зустрілися лоб в лоб бандерівці та червоноармійці. Перші уже сиділи за столом, коли зайшли другі. Замість стріляти, одні запрошують інших до столу. По вечері радянський офіцер хоче віддячити їм за гостинність і пропонує повстанцям свого пістолета. Ті ж відмовляються: не годиться воякові без зброї»

Що хотів цим сказати автор? Він сам ж на початку каже що такі історії були неможливими через характер конфлікту, це не перша світова, де воювали незрозуміло за що, тут людей жорстоко вбивали, при чому саме червоноармійці і мало того що вбивали самих воїнів, ще й старалися виявити їхні сім’ї та й їх знищити, це не дві рівноправні армії, це війна підпілля і армії з абсолютною владою, яка могла доводити терор до неймовірного рівня. Тож що цим хотіли сказати автори, закласти нам в голови що навіть серед прогнилих людей, є хтось хороший, а на біса нам цей месендж зараз? А яка гарантія того що наступного дня червоноармійці не здали упівців?

Далі мене чекали нескінченні згадування російських письменників для «красного слівця», далі цитата:

Як мораль до цих історій варто зацитувати фрагмент із вірша-спогаду Йосифа Бродського «24 декабря 1971 г.». Одна строфа звучить як пересторога для кожної влади, котра, як колись сталінська вважає, що прийшла всерйоз і надовго:
Знал бьі Ирод, что чем он сильней
Тем верней, неизбежнее чудо
Постоянство такого родства –
основной механики Рождества.

Дійсно. Літературний шедевр, жоден українець не зміг би прожити життя без знання цього кволого вірша. Не знайшлося достойного поета серед світової та української літератури, щоб зацитувати його, якщо вже так конче треба було, потрібно було впихнути Бродського, який доречі був проімперіалістом та українофобом, цю інформацію можна знайти на богом забутій вікіпедії.

Щиро бажаю авторам витравити рускій мір з своєї душі, бо виглядає це дуже вбого. Ну або купити вже собі квиток на росію й цитувати Бродського, Толстого і Достоєвського скільки влізе. В свою чергу я запишу собі їх в чорний список, щоб не дай Боже ще раз не натрапити на їхню творчість та не потратити час і нерви на таке.

"Велика різдвяна книжка" тому й велика, що в ній величезна кількість надзвичайно цікавої, різноманітної інформації не лише про різдвяні звичаї, а й про виникнення свята Різдва, його сприйняття, тлумачення та значення в різних країнах і у різний час.
🎄Як виникли колядки та вертепи, чому царів троє, а поруч з Ісусом у яслах саме такі тварини;
🎄Хто, коли і чому саме ялинку обрав різдвяним деревцем;
🎄Чому на Різдво заведено дарувати подарунки;
🎄Як різні церковні консерватори та політичні режими так і не змогли викорінити певні різдвяні традиції;
🎄Як виник "різдвяний дух" - які книжки, фільми та пісні його "створили" як в християнських, так і в нехристиянських країнах;
🎄Яке місце займає Ісус у різдвяному святкуванні;
🎄 Чому ми, зрештою, святкуємо Різдво і чому саме так.

Якщо згрубша підсумувати усю інформацію у цій книжці, то більшість відомих у всьому світі і на сьогодні невід'ємних елементів Різдва виникли раніше чи пізніше в німецькому краї, а популярними у всьому світі стали у 20-21 столітті завдяки американській кінематографії: і ялинки, і "Тиха ніч", і різдвяні ораторії відомих композиторів, і різдвяні зірки - червоні квіти у вазонках, і навіть Дід Мороз, який став популярним у Радянському Союзі, беруть свій початок на німецькій землі.

І хоча це дуже інформативна книжка, з багатьма історичними відомостями, авторам вдалося не лише зацікавити мене як читачку усіма різдвяними передісторіями, а й подарувати відчуття тепла, радості та затишку - як добре, що таке свято як Різдво є у нашому житті, і не має значення, скільки страв на столі, і які прикраси на ялинках - бо це все лише елементи, а не суть цього свята.

Wanted to read this b4 Xmas day - so it was a quick read but a brilliant one! For me, this was a necessary book to purchase after all of my Ukrainian studies for two years now. I knew a bit about Ukraine’s Christmas events and traditions; yet there is so much more to know.

This book was fantastic, Hrytsak, Gerbish etc did a brilliant job with the cover, chapters and layout of this work.

This is Ukraine’s Christmas traditions! As President Zelenskyy said earlier, “We'll celebrate Christmas even if there is no electricity the light of our faith in ourselves will not be put out".

This book and the experience of reading it is the perfect companion for the pre-Christmas time. It helps create a holiday atmosphere, inviting you with its stunning cover, enveloping you in interesting stories, as well as beautiful illustrations by Ukrainian artists. Even though the focus is set on Ukraine, it's generally extremely informative about all customs around Christmas, such as where the tradition of putting up a Christmas tree came from, where Santa Claus actually got his name from or why and since when children write letters to him. A foreword to the English translation is included, which also puts the recent events in Ukraine into context:

The book you are holding in your hands was published in Ukraine a year before the onset of the full-scale-Russia-Ukraine war. This war has been described in different ways, but here is the definition we offer: the country where Christmas is one of the most significant holidays of the year and is celebrated twice, honoring both Eastern and Western traditions, was attacked by the country where Christmas has lost all meaning.

I can see this book being of interest to both Ukrainians, to better understand the historical intricacies behind one of the most important holidays of the year, as well as to people from other countries. If you ever heard about the fact that Orthodox Christmas wasn't celebrated on the same day as the Catholic one or wondered why the New Year's celebration is such a big deal in the countries that were previously a part of the Soviet Union - all this and much more will be covered within the 8 different chapters.

In the Soviet Union, Christmas was strictly forbidden, firstly, as a religious holiday, and secondly, as a public holiday (public holidays in the USSR could only be official). Carollers who walked door-to-door [...] were caught by the police and their parents were fined.
p. 74

The only reason why I deduced one point from the rating was because I felt like there was a little something that was missing. What I read out from some other reviews was that the original Ukrainian version of the book had some parts that weren't included in the translation. This might be a reason for that sensation. Nevertheless, I was generally very positively surprised. If you're generally not a religious person (like I am), there are still little charming bits and pieces of information that you can take along from the reading experience.

Another attribute of Christmas - and the Christmas tree - is light. [...] But festive candlesticks were deliberately not put in some churches in order to encourage parishioners to come with their lamps, thereby reminding them that they are the light for the world; that the light does not remain locked in the church building, but must be with them wherever they go, especially in their homes.

From the beginning and up until the very end, the book was informative and well thought out, so that even a little commentary on the cover design and the writing process can be found wrapping everything up on the last pages. This book could both be a beautiful gift for someone special but also a unique little treat for yourself!

У мене не «Велика», а лише «Різдвяна книжка».

Зовні - дуже гарна. Ілюстрації душевні та рідні, затишні.
Але сам текст - для віруючої людини і мене це дивує. Якщо це опис як зароджувалися традиції і які українські - чому автори вважають, що цю книгу читає християнин?

У версії 2023 року є одруківки, повторення абзацу. Різдво ще зазначено датою 6 січня.

Beautiful art. Fascinating cultural insights. A surprising amount of church history. Christmas is all the more important during wartime, and tyrants try to do everything they can to squash anything Christian. Hence Russia’s past bans on traditional Christmas celebrations. The changing of Christmas carols to celebrate the birth of Lenin rather than the birth of Jesus was especially heartbreaking.

Чудова збірка цікавих фактів про Різдво і довкола Різдва. Читається легко, а ще відкриває багато спогадів, у моєму випадку особливо з попкультури і хочеться знову багато чого переслухати/передивитись/перечитати, і ось він шлях до різдвяного настрою.

Ein sehr schön aufgemachtes und hochwertiges Buch, das ich vor dem Lesen wegen der Goldfolierung erstmal in Frischhaltefolie eingewickelt habe, damit sie nicht abblättert. Mit neuem Vorwort. Es scheint kleiner zu sein als die ukrainische Originalausgabe, wie ich den Videos auf YouTube entnehme. Und ist gekürzt ): 21,50€/16,99£.

Ich habe mich sehr über das gute und einfache Englisch gefreut, in dem mir der Inhalt kompakt, und populärwissenschaftlich dargebracht wurde. Es war ein Genuss es zu lesen. Es geht weniger auf die religiöse Weihnachtsgeschichte ein und deutlich mehr auf das, was sich drumherum entwickelt hat. Auch deswegen habe ich mich dann doch für dieses Buch entschieden, als für Weihnachen - Biografie eines Festes, da mich dort nur die letzte Hälfte interessieren würde. Ich habe hier sogar was über das Weihnachtsfest und seine Geschichte bei uns in Deutschland gelernt, da es immer mal wieder Verweise zu anderen Länder gibt und ein paar Dinge auch bei uns überhaupt erst etabliert wurden. Besondes gefreut habe ich mich über die 5 traditionellen Rezepte <3
Der zwei mal abgebildete Adventskalender mit 25 Türchen findet aber nirgendwo Erwähnung ^^' Und ich brauchte eine Weile, bis ich die Sache mit dem "deutschen" Kris Kringl (ist mir nur aus dem amerikanischen bekannt, aber genau darum geht es ^^' Wir kennen es als das danach erwähnte Christkindl) verstanden habe (p. 94).

Ein Jahreshighlight und ein Kleinod, zu dem ich immer mal wieder gerne greifen werde.

An optimistic outlook on life where good will prevail - with historical and cultural input and reflections.

Unwittingly I actually started to read this on the day that Ukrainians celebrate their orthodox Christmas! I actually looked online to see the basketball players bouncing out the rhythm of Carol of the Bells.

The illustrations are beautiful, and I had to laugh at the one on page 47

Very interesting and beautifully illustrated book. Very focused on the religious side of things, but not preachy. Understandably and unashamedly anti-Russian. It could easily be read in one sitting; part of me wishes it had been a little longer, it appears to be an abridged version of a Ukrainian book. But maybe more details would have been too much for the general reader. Hoping the publisher made a decent donation to Ukraine.

I loved this book. Very informative, also on the history of Christmas generally, and easy to read. Gives a handful of traditional Ukrainian Christmas recipes and otherwise discusses the traditions of Christmas in the country. Not, however, for children.

Making Everyday as Sacred as Christmas: Learning from History, Tradition, and Ukrainian Christmas

There’s an anonymous quote from Nadiyka’ Gerbish’s book A Ukrainian Christmas, a book I finished this Christmas morning as I sit waiting for the family to get up (along with 8 cups of coffee, two more books, three christmas films and this blog post) that goes, “Light never fights darkness, but overcomes it with its very presence. Christmas does not fight hoplessness- it just comes, leaving no room for despair.” 
This is a sentiment made alive in Gerbish’s exploration of Ukranain Christmas Tradition, which is, from the authors own explanation, less a description of facts and more of a lens through which to see and make sense of the Ukrainian story and history. Through this lens it then becomes possible to see the shaping of world history from this perspective of this central space holding that social and geopolitical realities of both East and West in its same soil. 
One of the unique things about Ukraine is that it became this fusion of Traditions and beliefs and cultures born from (often competing) cultural realities rolling like a snowball from one side to another, picking up all of these bits and pieces as it goes. This is no more evident than it is in the Ukranian Tradition, with its customs becoming a window into understanding the rest of the world that surrounds it.
And yet its not just the preservation of its own Tradition that matters in this discussion, is the ways this window brings an understanding of that central tension that guides the whole of the human experience. A tension in which darkness is the norm and light is the exception. Where war is the norm and peace is the exception. We tend to miss this in the sheltered spaces of our western traditions where the tensions take on a different shape and concern within our ideological and largely privileged battles for cultural dominance, but we are nevertheless part of this same reality. In one of the book’s most fascinating chapters (Songs and Carols), one of the ways this becomes most aware is in recognizing the stories and contexts behind the songs that we sing, detached as we’ve become from that history. Looking at these songs from that vantage point can be a humbling thing, because it makes one aware of just how much of our Christmas celebrations struggle to articulate the same sense of necessary presence.
I’ve noticed a trend in many of the podcast episodes I have been listening to this season towards deconstructing many of misconceptions about the biblical narrative of Jesus’ birth as well, with a particular interest in dismantling our assumptions about there being “no room in the inn,” a word that isn’t in the text and wouldn’t make sense of the second temple context (Jesus was born in a family home in the great room). The same discussion can apply to the ways we recontextualize the birth narrative into our time and place as well. Here the book A Ukranian Christmas helps us see that in its historical narrative,

“Christmas is a time that reminds us that justice and love prevail, even when it seems that both are slowly dying. It ensures the indestructbility of hope in times of the greatest hopelessness. For as long as we celebrate Christmas, we can neither be defeated nor destroyed.”

As long as we celebrate Christmas. From this end critiquing our own space and own place and time need not be the discarding of our Traditions, but rather seeking to understand them. Yes, we can follow that history in a way that brings us through the soil of Ukraine, but we also are living and embodying our present moment. It is understanding both of these aspects as existing in relationship that can bring the appropriate tension to the surface. Light and dark, hope and despair, war and peace. As the author concludes,

“In times such as the people of Ukraine are living through today, the Christmas story has particular resonance. God sent a vulnerable chid to the world to bring peace, reminding us that genuine peace should also embody justice for the poor, the weary, and the oppressed…. there is hope for that in the mystery of Christmas”

As George MacDonald writes above, Christmas is the beginning of the story of hope, and thus is the lens through which we see all of history. It is the means by which every day becomes as sacred as this day of common and worldwide celebrations, in all of their cultural representations

“A Ukrainian Christmas” book by Nadiyka Gerbish and Yaroslav Hrytsak is not only an opportunity to investigate the history of Christmas, but also to get total esthetic joy, because the book looks fantastic, thanks to amazing illustrations by five Ukrainian female artists.

The book contains chapters that tell us about general Christmas history and different aspects of its celebration, such as food, carols, nativity scenes, etc. Each chapter generally starts with a historical overview of past centuries and concludes with how European traditions could be found in Ukrainian Christmas. It’s crucially important as it allows us to consider Ukraine in a global historical context.

Besides, authors often oppose Ukrainian celebration to russian one, investigating the deep differences, which lie between allegedly “brother nations”, even though it is a totally fictional narrative, and in this book we can find lots of its disproofs. While reading “A Ukrainian Christmas” we can see, that Ukraine is inseparable from Europe and, in return has a huge difference from russia despite the hundreds of years of occupation.

This book shouldn’t be considered as a comprehensive guide. Ukrainian Christmas and winter holidays are such diverse things, that it’s impossible to include it under one book cover. But this book will be a great starting point if you decide to investigate this subject further.

“A Ukrainian Christmas” can become a great gift for holidays. Although I would not recommend it for kids (because the text could be a bit hard for them due to lots of historical references), for adults it will definitely bring warmth and give celebration ideas.

Не мала змоги прочитати книгу українською, читала англійську версію.
Що хочеться сказати:
1. Обкладинка розкішна.
2. Є декілька влучних коментарів на початку книги, котрі іноземному читачу можуть пояснити актуальну ситуацію в Україні.
3. Не до кінця розумію кому адресована книга? Дорослим? Дітям? Українцям, які пережили Різдво на власному досвіді? Українцям, які не знають що таке Різдво? Іноземцям, які хочуть дізнатися про Різдво в Україні?
Якщо українцям, які мають досвід святкування Різдва в Україні - то опис далеко не повний і не точний.
Якщо тим, хто не знає що таке Різдво, то такий читач швидше за все не знайде відповіді на своє запитання. В книзі двічі або тричі згадується про те, що суть Різдва (християнського) втрачена, але, на жаль, немає чіткого пояснення, що ж таке християнське Різдво.
Якщо іноземцям, то ідея гарна, та знову ж таки - саме українського Різдва в книзі мало. Автори швидше намагалися вплести українські традиції святкування Різдва в загальну картину світу - багато історії святкування Різдва в світі(Європі) і поміж рядками згадано Україну.
4. Прочитати книгу варто. Обкладинка розкішна.

Якщо ви хочете швидко, цікаво і дещо з гумором дізнатись про походження Різдва та його основних традицій, то це саме те, що треба. Є багато класних книжок про різдвяні традиції, але ця дуже гарна і коротенька (трохи більше 100 сторінок) і без зайвих подробиць.

Тут про історію Різдва, традицію дарування подарунків та прикрашання ялинки, різдвяний стіл, різдвяні пісні, Святого Миколая, Санта Клауса і Діда Мороза. А також про упослідження цього свята в нацистських та комуністичних режимах. В кінці є навіть цитати письменників та відомих людей про Різдво, тож я вже знаю, як підпишу різдвяні фотографії на наступний рік😂

❌єдиний мінус - в кінці, у розділі про Різдво в умовах сучасної війни - перестарались з конʼюнктурою та ура-патріотизмом (порівнюють звук генератора з мурчанням котика, до якого всі звикли), я такого не люблю🤚🏻

А так - ідеально для різдвяного подарунка✨🥰 дуже тепла книжка, яка приносить відчуття магії, тепла і надії☺️

Цього року я сперечалась з іншими та сама задумувалась про дату святкування (24 чи 25 грудня), значення традицій, як сходження першої зорі та Різдвяні пісні тощо, тому ця книжка була для мене дуже вчасною та помічною🫶
