There have been times of personal difficulty when the Psalms alone have been my source of hope, as they directed me to God and his rebuke and discipline but also to his unfailing love and forgiveness.'
The Psalms have an extraordinary ability to enable people to give voice to joy, praise and thanksgiving and an equal ability to turn their fears, frustrations and failures into heartfelt prayer to God. The whole of life is to be found in them, the complete range of emotions and the raw reality of our precarious existence.
Signposts provides a map to help readers chart their way through the Psalms, watch out for points of interest, and make connections between one place and another. This devotional book will repay careful reading with a Bible open alongside it.

*A psalm per page makes for ideal daily reading or preacher's notes.
*Short articles explore significant themes from the Psalms.
*'Signposts' helpfully provoke reflection, action or response.

This is an absolutely delightful book. The author gives a short overview of each Psalm before giving a ‘Signpost’ to prompt some deeper thinking on each Psalm. This is done with real warmth and often includes an anecdote from the author’s life demonstrating how relevant the Psalm’s still are today. I’ve read a Psalm a day with some friends for the last six months and have absolutely loved using this book as a guide to help me think more deeply about each Psalm. I’d highly recommend to anyone.

A friend says to a group of us, "I'm planning to read all the Psalms, one a weekday using a daily devotional - want to join me?"
"Sounds fun" I said, "but I will probably skip ahead sometimes," worried simultaneously that there will be days where I cannot keep up.
"That's ok" said my friend, "there is no pressure, we don't even have to read it every day".

Three weeks in and I geniuinely can't get enough of this devotional - it is the highlight of my day. It does so much of the heavy lifting in terms of historical context, structural examination and tone analysis, that I'm left with the only job/pleasure of understanding what God is saying to us and relating back to Him through the Psalms.

So to my friend with the crazy/brilliant idea of reading 150 Psalms together (I mean, it's so nice that you can stand us enough to include us in this 6 month journey), thank you. And to the author, thank you.

Spoiler alert: Psalms ends with a fitting doxology that Tidbull gives perspective on - humans were made to glorify God. I will give that time to sink in in light of the glorious 150 Psalms worth of evidence I have just read.
