Sleep tight…don’t let the bedbugs bite…when the monsters come hunting, call Nyxia White.
Nyxia White isn’t entirely human. She sees the things no one else can. She never counted on being called to The Seven, it was an offer she could’ve refused…if she wanted to die. Now she’s one of the beings tasked with protecting humanity.
When creatures start escaping the darkness and claiming human lives, Nyxia is the one who will stand against them. Together with her demon familiar, Acheron, and dark magic, she will answer the call and fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.
When monsters come hunting…she will be their nightmare.
Orlando Sanchez has been writing ever since his teens when he was immersed in creating scenarios for playing Dungeon and Dragons with his friends every weekend. An avid reader, his influences are too numerous to list here. Some of the most prominent are: J.R.R. Tolkien, Jim Butcher, Kat Richardson, Terry Brooks, Piers Anthony, Lee Child, George Lucas, Andrew Vachss, and Barry Eisler to name a few in no particular order. The worlds of his books are urban settings with a twist of the paranormal lurking just behind the scenes and generous doses of magic, martial arts, and mayhem. Aside from writing, he holds a 2nd and 3rd Dan in two distinct styles of Karate. If not training, he is studying some aspect of the martial arts or martial arts philosophy. He currently resides in Queens, NY with his family and can often be found in the local Starbucks where most of his writing is done. One thing Orlando Sanchez is awesome at is world building.
Welcome to Nyxia White's world; a darker world than the Montague and Strong series world but just as well imagined. This is book one of three currently planned but I'm sure we're going to be asking for more. Nyxia isn't human due to a failed casting; she's now Otherkin, dangerous, angry, and able to create her own claws. Acheron is a Demon Lord that Nyxia managed to summon and bind. Together they hunt things that go chomp in the night but there are moves a foot break the partnership, and Nyxia is going to have to go a rending.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this story as I like this author’s ‘Montague and Strong Detectives’ series and wondered if this one would be as good. I think it’s just as good or maybe even better. Nyxia White is not human any longer. She was human once, but was changed into something called Otherkin. A powerful group called The Seven, who police the paranormal, allowed her to live, helped her through her transformation, and gave her some training. Nyx has a tenuous relationship with The Seven as they consider her dangerous, more so because of her demon partner Acheron, who she summoned by mistake and is now bound to her. The Seven do not like demons and keep a watchful eye on Nyx, with the underlying threat of removing her – permanently – if she gets out of line. But someone is trying to get her attention and Nyx doesn’t know why. A powerful demon is summoned that she and Acheron need to contain. They’re later attacked and Acheron is missing. The Seven won’t help her track him down and her only hope is to master a powerful weapon that just might kill her instead. If you like witty dialog and fast-paced paranormal mystery with compelling characters, this book is for you! It quickly became of the favorites that I’ve read this year and I’m hoping the next book in the series is released soon.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
“They Bite” is the sort of book that makes you wonder.* It's the first in a series but deliberately hoards information at every point, giving you just enough, but not a smidgen more, to explain the story as it unfolds. Nyxia 'Nyx' White was once human, but now she's not. She's something more or, possibly, something less. Her job is to protect humanity but it soon becomes apparent that someone,or something, is targetting her. She got a powerful demon, Acheron, bound to her, and he's probably the more intelligent of the two:- “Humans have always delved in areas that don’t concern them. They like to poke the dark … they just don’t like it when the dark pokes back.” And the dark is definitely poking back. It's a short book and it doesn't so much end as just stop. Still, I'll probably read on. *Wonder if the author is capable of much better and is deliberately hiding his light under a bushel, just giving enough away to let you think that there are greater things to come. 3 Stars.
This is a new series and introduces you to some new characters and organizations. Nyx, who is an Otherkin, Acheron, a Demon Lord, and Gryn, a powerful wizard. This story sets things up, with the start off with a wizard who didn’t know what he was doing, to find out that Nyx, because she is an Otherkin is not like a great many. She finds a sig that is known to her demon partner ant that gets the ball rolling. After two stops and Acheron getting kidnap, the fun begins, with Nyx having to decide to become something else to save the partner that no one thinks needs saving.
It does end on a cliffhanger and the need to know more about what Otherkins and how Nyx and Acheron deadly summoning. But all in all, it is worth reading and I can not wait for the next book and all the answers it will bring.
At best an excerpt from a book and NOT a stand-alone. Cliffhanger ending.
I thought this was a short story, but it’s a scant scrap from a novel. The excerpt is filled with a tun’s worth of dialogue, fantastic world building, great character development, and many vignettes and explanations. Protagonist Nyx is a very prickly character, which is said to be expected of her altered Otherkin state. Her sidekick, Demon Lord Archeron, is flamboyant enough to need a bit of tone-down. Or a hard whack upside the head.
I did enjoy hopping into a new and darker fantasy world, but the excerpt is too short for the different settings introduced. The ending is a fall over a cliff, so with a hard knock, that’s 1 star gone. I will likely read more of this series, but I may wait and read the entire book after completion.
I love the strange relationship between Nyxia and Acheron! And Gryn - oh he’s a perfect mentor: smart, calm, and very dangerous. I like the pacing of the story - no time wasted on introspection, history, or detail, but enough information is supplied so that the reader isn’t totally lost. I would really like to know how Nyxia became that way, why Acheron is her friend, and what is her connection with Gryn, but enough information is given that I get the gist of their relationships and personalities and can focus on the action and the mystery unfolding. I would really like to see the Nyxia stories turned into full-length novels (with more detail and development and more drama and action!).
Great first story! Sometimes it takes me a bit to get into a first book in a series, but not with They Bite: A Nyxia White Story. This story grabs your attention from the very first and keeps your attention to the end. It includes interesting characters with a fast-paced, exciting plot. And, Easter eggs - “Abyss and gazing...”, etc. I am really looking forward to finding out more about Nyxia, but in general I think that I like Archeron the best because at least for me, he was unexpectedly likeable. Orlando Sanchez has definitely outdone himself. This is a must read.
This is a new series from this author. We get introduced to Nyxia White who is other than human, and her demon familiar Acheron. It's a fantastic first book full of magic, mayhem, and some scary beings! The story will have you quickly become involved in Nyxia and Archeron's assignment and wanting to know what will happen next. Be forewarned there is a cliffhanger ending, but I'm looking forward to the next book and continuing the adventure into Nyxia's world.
New series. New hero. A new, darker universe. Two things I'd expect from this author: to build an intriguing world and interesting characters. They Bite has both in spades. We dive into the story of Nyxia, an Otherkin with a demon familiar. Pieces about their history reveal themselves as their current dilemma unfolds, adding an undercurrent of intense curiosity to the action. The more learned, the more yearned. Prepare to be left begging for more.
Well this a stark contrast to the last book I read. But I'm a great way. And yep, I am looking forward to the next book in this series to be. Fascinating and exciting, action and humour. A really good combination in this story. As usual I never give away details of the storyline, as I much prefer for people, fans of this genre, to get the book and read it. You will not be disappointed. I highly recommend this book as a starter, with more to follow.
It is not an M&S book.. And it was not advertised that way. I just found this book to be choppy and didn't bfow as easily as other series by Mr. Sanchez. There was really no depth to any characters and that could be because this book was was really short. The conversations between the characters was pretty stilted and unnatural..I didn't feel as though people would actually talk like that to each other. Stilted.. I love reading a stories though so I will try book two.
Orlando delivers another out of the park hit with They Bite: A Nyxia White Story. We meet Nyx and her bonded partner, Archeron. Right off the bat we are in the deep end with an investigation of a body which leads to deep questions. Filled with action, snark, and humor, They Bite: A Nyxia White Story will leave you hungry for more.
Comes a NEW World to explore, with dark and dangerous characters, that suck in the reader from the get go, to traipse down the darkest path he has yet written. The only negative is the length of the book, it will leave you screaming for more. Read this at your peril, for the next book is not yet written.
I’m really going to love getting to know these new characters over the next two books, but I’m afraid these short stories will not be enough. Nix and Acheron have everything needed to be a full fledged series. Backstory, secret society, mission statement, snark and tendencies toward destructive solutions.
A Demon & an Otherkin walk into a jobsite, what can go wrong you ask, yeah, everything. Dark & gritty, Nix takes no prisoners and doesn't apologise for it & Acheron, he's a Demon Lord, and what you see is what you get. This is just the beginning of a wild and crazy ride
First story in a three part series. This gritty urban fantasy story is set in a darker, grittier world to the expanding Montague & Strong series. Fast paced action, a strong and sassy protagonist with a pretty awesome partner. We are left with a bit of a cliffhanger, but number 2 in the series should be out quite soon.
Love this new book from Orlando. Our anti heroine is true to herself and to her friend. She is brash antagonistic and powerful. She changed and is not fully human anymore. Of course we know that people fear what is different no matter if they are doing right. Can’t wait for the next book.
I loved this book! The dynamic between Nyxia and Acheron is intriguing. There are already so many questions that need answering I love the grittier darker side. The storyline jumps off the page and grabs you. This world needs exploring beyond 3 books! In the words of Acheron this is a BAMF!!
A deadly Otherkin partnered with a demon lord battling darkness on their terms. This new world is twisted even more than Montague and Strong. The story doesn't have the snark factor but it is worth the read. The downside was that it ended just when it was getting more interesting.
This is a great read and the beginning of a new story in a new world for Orlando Sanchez. Orlando does a great job of world building, introducing us to a new world and new characters. Nyx is not your average demon hunter. Her partner being a demon makes things interesting. Jump in. Can’t wait for more.
Why only four stars? Actually, it's 4.5 stars. I'm reserving the other half star for the next books in the series. I mean, it could be a dud series. (Riiiggghhhtt) Like that'll happen!
Very interesting characters. I expect this to be a very interesting series.
Nyxia White seems to be a very intriguing character. Her sidekick is a Demon Lord(yes, the caps are required), she is an Otherkin ( l'm thinking we'll find out more about that in future books) Orlando has done it again
Good book, with a darker twist than Monty and Strong
Mr Sanchez did a great job with this new path. I enjoyed the darker aspect of this book. Looking forward to the next.I'm the trilogy...or more books ;-)
I really loved the banter between the partners and the stage-setting for the next two stories. I'm sure the next one will start with a bang large enough to rattle the windows.
As always great characters intriguing story.humour action Demons Darkin Otherkin. cliffhanger. Looking forward to next intallment. Love the titles. They bite. they shred. Only downside no Peaches! 😂 keep up the awesome work !
Another wild ride in the addictive imagination of Sanchez that made me ask, why is it already the last page, it can't be over already? Absolutely recommended!
a great storyline waiting to develop, wonderful characters i look forward to getting to know. wit, humour and pace abound. storyline needs more meat on the bone.
Gotta say that for some reason I didn’t see Nyx as female until the characters started using the female pronoun. But the story has all the hallmarks of a good yarn spiced up with Sanchez’s typical fast paced story telling.
I wasn't sure but somehow I got hooked. I have read other books by this author and wasn't sure I was going to like this one as the main chi is female and I tend to like hero's father that heroines. But there you go I am now off to read book 2
