About the author

Charlaine Harris

Charlaine Harris has been a published writer for over forty years. Her first two books were standalones, followed by a long sabbatical when she was having children. Then she began the Aurora Teagarden book, mysteries featuring a short librarian (eventually adapted for Hallmark movies). The darker Lily Bard books came next, about a house cleaner with a dark past and considerable fighting skills.

Tired of abiding by the mystery rules, Harris wrote a novel about a telepathic barmaid that took at least two years to sell. When the book was published, it turned into a best seller, and DEAD UNTIL DARK and the subsequent Sookie books were adapted in Alan Ball's "True Blood" series. At the same time, Harris began the Harper Connelly books. Harper can find the bones of the dead and see their last minute.

When those two series wound to a close, the next three books were about a mysterious town in Texas, called Midnight.

A change in publisher and editor led to Harris's novels about a female gunslinger in an alternate America, Lizbeth Rose. The Gunnie Rose books concluded with the sixth novel.

She's thinking about what to write next.

Tacky
Dahlia and Glenda are asked to be bridesmaids at a friend of Dahlia’s (Taffy’s) wedding. Since Dahlia isn’t familiar with bridesmaid’s modern traditions they go check out a typical wedding. Dahlia makes note of everything. As they watch the ceremony, Dahlia is appalled at the lime, green, sheaths the bridesmaid’s wear. She takes special note of all the men on the groom’s side and realizes that at Taffy’s wedding, they will all be werewolves. Glenda doesn’t want to go now because they will have to touch a wear. Glenda then disappears leaving Dahlia to go to the celebration of Taffy and Don’s fourth nuptial celebration.

Sahlias arrives at Moonshines, but gets harassed at the door by a were. The were starts to mouth off at Dahlia and he finds himself on the floor. After this, he leads her to Taffy. But then when Taffy introduces her to the other weres, another one of them calls her a snotty bitch and she reaches out and grabs him by the throat. Taffy pleads with her and she releases him. Taffy and Dahlia take their talk outside. Taffy asks about the other bridesmaids and Dahlia vaguely says s”They couldn’t make it” (knowing good and well the reason). Taffy says she didn’t think it was too much to ask and then asks Dahlia to help her get through this wedding and keep the peace between both sides so there won’t be bloodshed.

Dahlia expresses her concern to Taffy that since the were’s aren’t out, it might look like she’s marrying a human. Taffy says they can just say the wedding was “fake” if it gets out to the humans. However, if it gets out beforehand there will be protests. Then Taffy remembers some of the people that are staff at Cedric’s mansion are human. (Cedric is the one who offered his house for the ceremony). Taffy is thinking more security. Dahlia is thinking she shouldn’t go through with the ceremony (and says so). She says it might bring attention to the weres before they are ready. But Taffy says sorry.

Dahlia says she knows she’s not pregnant, but Taffy says Don’s ex is. They have to get married before she has the baby or she’ll go to the were council and demand they reinstate their marriage. Dahlia says she’ll just kill her. Problem solved! But then the ex appears out of nowhere with a knife and lunges at Taffy. Dahlia tries to deflect it but isn’t quick enough. Dhalia breaks her wrist before she can kill Taffy. The others rush out and look at Dahlia as if she started it. The humans are lead away. It’s explained to Don what happened. The knife (which somehow got lodged in Dahlia in the scuffle I guess) gets pulled out by Todd (the were she put on the floor).

Dahlia comes up with an agreement. Amber (the ex) will pay for her dress and shoes and stay away from Taffy for a year. Amber wants Dahlia to pay for her wrist damage but they all think this is ridiculous. Todd says he’ll walk Dahlia home. On the walk, they discuss security for the wedding. On the day of the wedding, the human staff is tense (having never served at a supernatural wedding). But everything looks nice. There’s a flowing fountain of sympathetic blood. No ruffles or bows on the gowns. The gowns are dark blue, have sequins at the top, are form-fitting, and have spaghetti straps. In short, Todd is very impressed. (He’s her escort).

As Taffy begins her walk down the aisle, the caterers start to attack. Before they can get a hit in tho, Taffy leaps up and throws her bouquet at them knocking them down. Todd turns. Then the fight is on. All the shooters are taken down quickly (it doesn’t even last a page). Don and Taffy are happily married afterward. It turns out to be the supernatural event of the century. Years later Dahlia and Todd are married but they have a potluck wedding because Dahlia thinks formal weddigns are tacky.

My Thoughts
I hate that GR’s stopped letting us add covers. I hate to see book covers like this one just bare. I was going to add the book “My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding” because it includes this story, but that would kind of be “Cheating” because I didn’t read the other stories in that one (and didn’t intend to). Although, I’m really not sure what cover I *could* add. Unless I just added that one to this single story. When I first got the Sookie Stackhouse books a loooooooong time ago, I remember buying them all in one zip file. Fortunately, all the “side stories” (in between stories) came with the main books. Which really was a great deal looking back on it. Even though this story was short, I had to keep starting it over because I didn’t remember Dahlia and so my mind keep wandering. I still can’t place her. Wikipedia says she was in “All Together Dead”/ I just can’t bring her to mind. I’m not even sure why (or what) was t “Tack”. The bridesmaid's dresses sounded fine to me. Maybe a little loud but I’m sure there are worse than lime green sheath bridesmaid dresses. I’d probably choose those over the burgundy one Dahlia worse (but that’s just me). It was interesting that she ended up with Todd but then again it usually is like that. The people that you think you don’t like *ARE* usually the ones you down the line grow to love the most and care about. I should know.

It was an entertaining short story. At first, I didn't like that Sookie wasn't here, but after I read the story, I liked that she wasn't haha I mean she already has her books and her shorts stories, and I liked that it took place in the same universe, which is kind of huge. There must be others great characters to know/read with really interesting lives. And Dahlia is interesting, is very ancient. She must have thousands of stories to tell.
I like her persona. Dahlia is very thoughtful towards Taffy, which seems very in love with Don, and I liked how Dahlia meets Todd.
I would love to know more about her.

eponymous sentence:
p3: There was a line between being adorably provocative and simply tacky.

ocr:
p6: "I guess the wolves'l1 need food...."

p28: The Sookie books are also being read in Japan, Spam, Greece, Great Britain, Germany, Thailand, Russia, and France.

Who knew objecting to a wedding could result to being... tacky.
