I got this on sale at some point for under 99c, the premise has changed and updated since the blurb, as there is now no longer a 'husband' at all, just an ex wife. Which I think betters the story, judging from other earlier reviews before it was changed and edited. But it's still lacking.

This short sci-fi story set in 2160. It was fast paced, and had humour, action, and an interesting plot of a human woman - Rose- being impregnated by an all female alien species with their Queens offspring - desperate to survive a war tearing their planet and civilizations apart. Unfortunately we get little insight into Rose's feelings in the aftermath.

We cut to 4 years later, when Rose and her daughter Quinn have been constantly on the move to keep away from shady government organizations. When an alien from Quinn's home planet turns up just in time to help them escape once more, with a plan to get them off Earth.

Because of the fast pace, unfortunately the 'romance' as such as it is also becomes very fast, which ended up being unbelievable. There was a 'car scene' that didn't work for me, and far too much stopping and starting that allowed the 'bad guys' to catch up to them.

It ends in a cliffhanger, which was disappointing.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers to review. This doesn’t affect my opinion of the book, all my thoughts are my own and are honest.

When the spacecraft is attacked by the enemies of Empress Nashal, Rose makes it back to Earth freshly impregnated by alien royalty with said enemies on her heels.

Rose is a librarian and when she gives birth to her half-alien baby she has to run and keep running so no one can take her baby away from her.

Going into this book I really didn’t know what to expect, whether it would be triggering for me or not but it sounded so different from anything I have ever read I had to give it a go when I was given the chance.

This book was very fast-paced, action-packed and discussed a few topics of life from a different perspective that was very refreshing.

The book was so short that I didn’t have much time to form much of an opinion of the characters, I didn’t dislike or like them. I was just ambivalent towards them.

I didn’t take this book too seriously and because of that I enjoyed it more but I had some issues with this book that dragged the rating down. One was that it was so short that I really didn’t form any strong feelings towards it. There were a few questionable decisions that made me ask why would the author decide to do that. And that ending it was so quick that it just felt like it stopped halfway through the chapter and was jarring. Also, be warned that the blurb on Goodreads gives out false information, it says she is on her honeymoon with her husband when she is abducted, but in reality, she is going through a divorce with her ex wife.

Overall it was a fun read, so if my rating was based on enjoyment alone, it would have been a 3 star, but my rating system isn’t. It was just something different from what I have ever read and really was a quick and short read. I don’t know who or if I would recommend this book to someone else.

This is my first novel by author Ash Gray and I enjoyed reading "The Last Queen of Quorlec". The story happens in a futuristic Earth where the main character Rose, finds herself on a spaceship after being abducted by an all female alien race. The entirian are in the midst of a 200 year war for their home planet Quorlec and with the untimely death of their Queen, Nashal, the entirian doctors manage to impregnate Rose with one of the fifteen thousand royal eggs before their enemy destroy the ship and Rose becomes the only keeper of the entirian royal bloodline. The story is fast paced and easy to follow. I rated it 3 stars because the book description is a bit misleading and Zita's dialogue throughout the book needs a bit more work, she's an entirian alien who's been on Earth for 60 years. As far as recommending the book, I would classify the author in the LGBT sci-fi genre, so if you enjoy reading that this is an author to follow. Ash also designed the cover and I loved that. Thank you Ash for gifting me the book and giving me a peek into your imagination.

Rose is on her honeymoon when she's abducted by aliens -- who have abducted her for the express purpose of having her carry one of the many eggs of a Queen struggling to keep her subjects safe and fighting to prevent an invasion force from completely conquering her planet. And, yeah, if everything goes bad, it'll be good to have some descendants of the Queen running around.

A few years later, a woman comes knocking on the door of Rose and her daughter, Quinn, with the news that the enemy is close -- and has been working with the FBI -- to take her daughter from her -- Rose and Zita fight for their escape through human robotic and alien forces, just trying to get off the planet so that Quinn can claim her rightful place helping her people.

There's a sense of fun, despite the dangers, and a great pace with plenty of tense moments throughout this. It was an enjoyable read with some good writing, and I'm pretty curious where it goes from here. It's not perfect, I have a couple of complaints that I'm afraid will overshadow things -- I want to stress: I liked this book, I want to read more -- don't think this post is anything but a recommendation.

But to start with, other than the weaponry, I'm not so sure I see the difference between Gray's 2160 and 2016 -- it's a shame that Gray didn't work harder on that part of the world he built. I'm not saying it needs to be an unrecognizable reality (although it'd be nice), but we should have moved further than just better guns.

One of my biggest beefs in fiction -- TV or books -- are central characters telling their closest family and friends lies to protect them. Yes, I'm looking at you particularly CW DC shows. That's Rose's impulse move, which is understandable, but why not trust those closest to her with the truth? Particularly her husband, clearly head over heels with her. Why make up a ludicrous story to explain what happened to her rather than risk the truth?

My last beef was the sex scene -- there's some romantic tension early on that I'm fine with, I thought it worked in the moment. But running for your life, with various enemies on your heels is not the time to take a quick break for a little whoopie. It didn't need to be as graphic as it was (thankfully brief), but really ill-timed.

Setting that aside, this was a fun, quick read (I couldn't believe I was done when I got to the end) that really made me want to go grab the sequel. Ash didn't create a masterpiece here, but he told an engaging, entertaining story. Which is good enough for me.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for this post, I appreciate it.

First off, I enjoyed this book and my interest in where it goes is piqued.

I did however have issues with conversations happening and turning very quickly. And a LOT of exposition in them.

BUT. I like fast paced books as they are page turners and keep me interested. I also enjoyed the odd moments of the story from Quinn’s POV.

Except the brief sex scene in the car.

Would definitely recommend this as a good platform for an interesting series.

I was sent this book for free by the author in exchange for my review. Many thanks to Ash.

I received the book as part of an ARC review. I do like the sass between Rose and Zita. The book is fast paced with a lot of action. However it ends in a cliffhanger which I'm not fond of. It seems that if one was to continue reading the series, be prepared for a lot of violence and death but that is expected as it is about a war.

I received a free copy from voraciousreadersonly.
An interesting read with a good story line, bit of a surprising finish to the story, can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens to the characters. Highly recommend to everyone.

Very good

This book was very imaginative. I'm not sure I've ever read one quite like it. It is book one in a 6 or 7 part series.

Very fast paced, with little character development. But fun and incredible to see a Sci fi story that isn't based around men!

Rose never expected to be abducted by aliens, but she was, and to make matters worse their spacecraft is attacked while she is on it. Luckily she makes it safely back to Earth, although she has been impregnated, and she is on the run from the aliens/people threatening her life (and that of her baby). I enjoyed this short story, it was interesting (and I want to read what happens next). Rose is a great protector and has spirit, this short story might not be for you if you don't like females feeling intimate about each other.
I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received, and giving my thoughts and opinions on it.

As you may know, I’m a bit of a sucker for science fiction, so going into this one wasn’t much of a “do I really want to?” for me. The idea was interesting and the content was pretty short, so I thought, yeah, let’s give it a go. At the time, I didn’t know what the rest of the books were going to be about, exactly, but that would have actually only interested me more if I had known.

This first book, though, was kind of meh for me. It was a good set up for what the later books are going to be about (IE, the princess Quinn), but now that I know what the later ones will be, I want to read them more than I really wanted to read this first one. I would still read it, because I don’t believe in skipping around in a series.

But, as for this first book, here’s what I liked:

- Zita
- The dialogue. The dialogue was really good, and the banter bits were probably my favorite part of the entire story. It had moments where it was clunky, but overall I enjoyed it a lot.
- The concept. Alien princess born to a human mother? (And then later raised and will probably grow into a badass?) Yes, please.
- The pace. Though it dragged here and there, once it picked up, it picked up. The action scenes and the parts were everyone was on the move were just as they should be–fast-paced and going strong.
- The overall idea of the alien species Quinn belongs to. Their culture fascinates me, and I want to know more. Now. The way Zita explained it was very good, too, and I liked the way she related it to Rose’s culture to better help her understand.

What I was meh about:

- The beginning. I know it was probably necessary, but it was kind of boring for me.
- The time-frame. It’s set in the future (which took me a hot minute to figure out), but, while I really wanted to know more about what had changed in this future we’re being given, I wasn’t all that interested in the characters talking about it. If Rose had explained some parts in her head, I would have liked it more, but that’s just me.
- However, that might break the fourth wall too much. Who knows. I’d have to see it being done to give a proper opinion on which would be the better execution.

What I didn’t like:

- The sex scene while we’re in Quinn’s head. Threw me off completely from the story for a minute and soured the scene as a whole. This might go differently for others who read it, but for me? Nope. I did not like it at all. I feel, if we’re going to be given something like that, it should not be given in the kid’s POV. It just mades me uncomfortable.
-This was the big spoiler part. Sorry.

Favorite part:

Chapter 7, I think it was, where you’re put in Quinn’s POV and Quinn is counting to ten. That chapter was done so well. So well. Especially considering the fact we’re in the head of a four-year-old and we’re giving a mechanism, counting to a number, that is understandable and achievable for a child, is just very nicely done. I’d read that chapter again.

All in all, it was an okay start to what sounds like a great series, and I might just have to go and pick up the next book in the series once some more parts are out. (Because, if I read and then have to wait, I might lose interest.)

Thanks for reading!

I really enjoyed this short story - but this short story should not be marketed as a book, it is not. There is no reason why this couldn't be the prologue to the next book in the series. I would have liked to read more as this start is very intriguing.
