Magic Unfurled

Rate this book
Two kinds of people inhabit my those with loads of magic and those with little or none. The Haves—usually warlords and their henchmen—use their arcane abilities to keep the Have Nots firmly squashed beneath their enchanted thumbs. Unfortunately, I fall into the second category. The only thing worse in this lawless and brutal world than being magically stunted? Being a woman. On my own since age eleven, I stayed alive by posing as a boy, stealing to keep my belly full, and never lingering in one place for long. Lonely? Sure, but it kept me safe for eight long years. Until I picked the wrong gang to filch a loaf of bread from. If not for the magically skilled warriors who happened by, the blunder surely would have been fatal. The last place I wanted to be was in the hands of a warlord, but I wasn't given much of a choice. After rescuing me, they whisked me off to their encampment. I fully intended to get the hell out at the first opportunity. And I would have, too, if everyone hadn’t been so damned nice. Or not dangled an offer to teach me how to use the powerful magic I didn’t know I had. Guess I'll just have to see if I'm as much of a magical badass as they think... Magic Unfurled, Book One of the Interdimensional Magic Series, is a witty and action-packed tale set in the parallel dimension of Dekankara, first introduced in M.L. Ryan’s award-winning Coursodon Dimension series.

Scientist by day, paranormal romance-urban fantasy author by night, M.L. Ryan has many stories rolling around in her head, and she finally decided to write some of them. She prefers literature that isn't saddled with excruciating symbolism, ponderous dialogue or worldly implications. She also doesn't like plots so reliant on love at first sight that it makes her feel like her head might implode. She lives in Tucson, Arizona with her husband and teenage son, four cats, two Curly Coated Retrievers and an adopted desert tortoise.

Started strong but became a tragic love affair

This started out as a strong story, but the last 50 or so pages really turned everything on its head for the worse.

Major spoilers:

Basically everything she cares about gets ripped away from her just as she learns to trust and fall in love with a psychopath…we don’t find out he is a psychopath until towards the end of the book.

The city she arrives in is destroyed by her husband/lover and all the dreams of an equal society falls apart after a certain characters death.

Finally the ending was wth - her husband lover becomes a complete tyrant and she leaves through a portal to elsewhere.

It’s like a completely different story at the end

Very tragic

Real characters, fantasy world

Trying to survive in a brutal reality that only respects power can wear on anyone. Can Kya rely on the harsh lessons learned surviving on her own without losing a chance at a better life?

Beautifully done story of her struggle to remain herself while becoming part of something more.

Only weakness is in the very end segue into the next chapter. We understandably move forward in time quickly but the sudden pressure to run a certain direction feels contrived. I feel like there should have been more concrete reasons to choose that path.

Otherwise, fantastic story. Very highly recommended.

I am conflicted over this book.

It's the first in a new series and does a great job of world building and storytelling. I enjoyed much of the character development and interactions but... While it begins as a story of building bridges and trust and some of that continues, the end is far different - at least with portions of the MC;s life.

Maybe it's just the twists and turns of a supporting character has disenchanted me from reading more in the series as I'd hoped he was more than he turned out to be.

Overall the writing is solid, the storytelling good, the magical system and world building strong. Just not fully my cup of tea.

Great start to a new series!

This is the first book in a new series and does a great job of world building and storytelling. The author does a very good job with character development; they come to life on the pages and you feel their emotions as the story progresses. Good editing and proofreading prevented any bumps in the reading flow and enjoyment. I pretty much read this book straight through... Now I have to wait for the next book to be released.

A story, inside a story, inside a story.....

The story of a girl who left home after something dreadful happens to her is a reoccurring event. What Brin does with it, is not just excellent, it goes beyond her own imagination. Strong characters with humor, sarcasm, faults, and depth, that pull you into their story, with an ending that you will not guess after chapter 2. A very enjoyable read, thank you.

Hooked again.

I could not wait to start this book. Looking forward to more! Any reader who enjoyed Coursodon Dimension will enjoy this as well. I enjoyed the plot and characters and was drawn in by the well written story . Some books I can put down but this was one I could not and paid the sleepless night reading. Kept me engaged in the reading and hope for a quick next book. It may seem as a cliff hanger to some but to me just awaiting the next phase of the story.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series. Kya is a strong female who has always relied on herself for survival. It was great to follow her as she made friends and fit into a community. The magical aspects were great as Kya learned her full capabilities. And there was plenty of action. Can’t wait for the next book!

This book was very one dimensional for me. I liked where the author was going in terms of the moral of the story but the writing style was a bit too on the nose. I finished it but, only barely. My least favorite trope is chosen one and this had it everywhere. I am forgoing the remaining books of the series.

Really Good

Why? Protagonist doesn’t act stupid and is instantly blinded by a pair of abs. She wants to learn, has the correct amount of skepticism, and is not at fault for stupid decisions.

Great new world and new strong female charcters

Starts out as a typical fantasy adventure with really interesting characters and a smart, plucky heroine then builds through conflict and character growth and ends with a dramatic twist that makes you want to find out what comes next

This book blew me away

Follow Brin as she goes from a wanderer, to a council member, and finally to a wanderer again.

She finds love with a handsome, quirky man.

Follow her on her journey to find her power.

I envy you reading this for the first time!

Good story and quite the twist at the end I was not expecting. Good character building, some romance, could use a little more action but a good book. I am looking forward to reading the second one.

Life like

I could see the complex people and their interactions. I don't care what century the story is set in people are and have been still the same asses then and today.

Excellent book. Beginning was a little slow and the end a bit rushed but overall, so good. I enjoyed meeting Brin and the world she lives in.
