Rate this book
The virtual world of Austentopia is every Jane Austen fan’s dream...until it becomes a nightmare.

Laid-off teacher Olivia Crawford feels lost without the everyday, personal interactions with her students. Attracted by the salary and the potential for a career change, she considers an offer to become a beta player for a new Jane Austen virtual world within the VR universe of Allworld Online. Swallowing her fear, she accepts the position…and the invasive neural implant that will give her access to the virtual realm.

When Olivia wakes from the procedure already inside the literary-based universe, she enjoys reliving iconic scenes as Elizabeth Bennet…until a glitch causes a fellow gamer to suddenly vanish. As more players disappear and Olivia finds herself unable to detach from her avatar, she fears a forced shutdown might result in her being permanently deleted.

Can Olivia figure out who’s holding her prisoner in cyber-Hertfordshire before it’s too late?

Lindsey is a bestselling Science Fiction and Fantasy author who lives her life with one foot in a book—so long as that book transports her to a magical world or bends the rules of science. Her novels, from Science Fiction Adventure to Time Travel Romance, always offer a hearty dose of unreality, along with plenty of history, mystery, adventure, and romance.

When she's not working on her next novel, Lindsey spends her time hanging out with her two little boys, working in her garden, or playing board games with her husband. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family and their small pack of cats and dogs.

Just amazing!

Can’t wait to read more in this storyline! Thanks for the amazing world building and creativity. Now I want a real Austen-based VR world to explore (evil AI or not).

An interesting mix of science fiction, gaming, and old world romance stories. And while this is set in a game based on Pride and Prejudice it is a big departure, and had some interesting twists and turns

What a delightful adventure! I could not put it down!

I'm a huge fan of Pride & Prejudice stories and LitRPG so this was a dream mash up for me. There were enough elements of the beloved Jane Austen story to keep me smiling and the LitRPG parts were so well done! I love how she created a different kind of story-based game for the world and the dramatic plot twists between the game world and the real world.

The characters had a lot of depth, and then narration was good. Did not care for the sound effects, I thought they were distracting.

I hope this is a long series and I will look for more!

Excellence we expect

Lindsey Fairleigh’s books have a level of excellence we, as readers expect. She has not missed yet. This, the beginning of a new series melds the world of online gaming and the growth of personal virtual reality devices into the near future with post - pandemic economic aftershocks (in person schools fading away, humanities departments whittled down) into the fantasy worlds that we WANT to feel the reality of. The author combines her intimate knowledge of Seattle geography and demography into a clever viewpoint juxtaposed with classic literature of Jane Austen. Next installment — soon to come!!!!

WOW!

Whenever I see Pride and Prejudice as part of a book title I cringe. Honestly, I’m not interested in reading someone else’s version of Jane Austen’s classic. So I was not just pleasantly surprised but absolutely gob smacked when I got into THIS story. I completely understood Olivia’s reluctance to enter into the virtual world that is normal in her future time. There are clues about what’s going on but the story is utterly gripping and, of course, Olivia doesn’t see the clues that we do. The description of Allworld Online is amazing. One thing that I always look for in a book is originality and this story aces it!

Another great one

I've read all of Lindsay Farleighs books, and have never been disappointed. The latest is always my favorite! Allworld Online is set in the future, and portrays a different and scary time; science fiction disguised as possible reality. Another fantastic book, Lindsey!

Read the entire book in one sitting, and that cliff-hanger ending!! Oof! Don't fret; you get your happily ever after, so to speak, but there's definitely bigger things stirring. It would seem Olivia and Loki are just getting started. Can't wait for the sequel!

4.5 - What a combo! Lol Pride & Prejudice and LitRPG makes for an engaging and fun story. I liked the characters and want more. I am looking forward to the next book which is set in OZ. I alternated between reading and listening to the audiobook and enjoyed both.

Pride and Prejudice in a virtual reality, role playing game with a cyber terrorist takeover. What a fun read!

I'm not a gamer or into RPGs but all the lingo and mechanics were explained. The pace was good and it didn't drag on the world building. There was just enough P&P in it to make it interesting and I appreciated the very Darcy-like meet-cute and other nods to P&P.

It was left as a cliffhanger and I imagine the adventure will continue in another literary setting. I read this for my book club's monthly theme of 'science fiction and fantasy' - this isn't really my genre, so will likely pass. But I very much enjoyed this one!

Didn't realize I would enjoy it as much as I did.
I have read a lot of this author's books and was curious about this newest series. However, I thought it was going to be a romance and I prefer my books to be action packed - and this book did not let me down! I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

A cross between science fiction and Alice in Wonderland - I really felt like I had fallen down the rabbit hole and the cute references to Price and Prejudice added a wonderful idiosyncrasy to it. I very much look forward to the new books in this series.

I wish there was more!

I am a huge Pride and Prejudice fan, so I had to give this a try.
It was even better than I thought.
It has very creative world building, and we were just starting to get invested with the characters and the lead in to the next book.
Since this came out 4 years ago, and there's been no sign from the author that there'll be more books, I'm very sad.
I want more Olivia, more Loki, and definitely more Colin!

Literature meets VR, murder, and twists

I found this story riveting. As a Pride and Prejudice fan, following the story thru a VR players point of view was interesting. When people started disappearing, the mystery kept me wondering what the hell was going on. From a technical background it was interesting and entertaining.

I listed to the audio on the authors podcast, ALLWORLD ONLINE AUDIO SERIAL. I really liked listening to it from the author's voice. I have listened to both seasons, Pride & Prejudice and Vertigo. I really liked both. The idea is very interesting and I can't wait for more installments to see how things play out.

Some minor skewmorphosism that is bothering me more than it should (realistic VR doesn't make for a good story) but otherwise really good.
