Witches of Brimstone Bay #4

Do No Charm, Do No Evil

Rate this book
Solving crime one cheating ex at a time.

Witch Esme Westbrim has worked hard to rebuild her life in Bewitching Brimstone Bay, and is shocked when her cheating ex-husband Drew and his family turn up uninvited for a visit at her castle. Worse, the Dastardly Drew is hiding an unpleasant secret and is intent on wreaking havoc on Esme’s new life.

Juggling a bunch of non-magical guests, an uncontrollable teenage ghost, and Drew’s sneaky behaviour is stressful enough, and that is before two shocking tragedies unfold on Esme’s doorstep.

But when Drew is arrested for a death that looks nothing like murder, and Esme uncovers a plot to steal away her castle, her own long-lost magic starts spiralling out of control.

Can Esme untangle the complicated conundrum of a mysterious death, defeat the corrupt police, deal with the Dastardly Drew and save her castle with the help (and hindrance!) of her mischievous ghosts, her wild witch cousins, and the far too handsome Agent Chris Constantine? Or will her unruly magic unleash some harm and evil of its own?

Read it now and join Esme on her latest charming and funny witch cozy mystery adventure!

This is a full-length humorous cozy mystery that can be read as a standalone mystery story but is best enjoyed as part of the series.

This is book four of the Witches of Brimstone Bay series and see Esme Westbrim still working on what is wrong with her misfiring magic, not wanting anyone else to know, when she suddenly gets some unexpected visitors. The welcome one is Aunt Elvira and her nurse Maya, what is extremely unwelcome is her ex-husband Drew, who has refused to sign the divorce papers for over ten months, even though they were only married for three weeks, before she found him cheating with her friend Sarah! Apparently, Elvira wanted to have a repeat of the evening with family and friends, she had almost three years ago, just before finding out her husband of three years Rishi had been killed in a car accident, that she believes was murder. She wants to spend the third anniversary with Esme and the others and for Esme to figure out who killed her beloved husband. Aunt Elvira had no idea that Esme and Drew had been separated for so long and that Sarah was Drew’s mistress, or she would never have asked them all to come to the castle with her. Drew’s half-brother Nick is also there with his girlfriend Tyra, who has introduced him to the reality of magic, being a witch herself. Also Nick’s friend Grant, who has a thing for Maya, Elvira’s nurse, and Eugene, a long-time friend of Elvira. Drew doesn’t think highly of Esme’s ancient castle, which she inherited from her dead Aunt Agnes who works in the family bakery shop, dressed as a witch for the tourists and needing sunglasses to hide her empty eye sockets!
Tempers are rising, but Esme was always told to do no charm and to do no evil with her magic, especially against a Humble as the magical call those without. However annoyed she is with Drew and Sarah’s presence and his demand that Esme pretend they have a chance of getting back together, to ensure he inherits everything from his Aunt Elvira’s will once she is gone. This only one of the reasons why he hasn’t signed off on their divorce papers! On the anniversary of Rishi’s death, two more of their party turn up dead, one thought to be an accident by the inefficient Chief of Police Hawke Hardwick, who shouldn’t even be involved when it was a Humble death, then another at the castle that is thought to be a suicide. Both deaths end up being looked at again, with Nick Being arrested for the supposed accident on the beach, now thought to be murder. To try and get himself out of a murder charge, he tries to sell off half of the Westbrim castle to their bitter rivals the Hardwicks, who can pull strings and change the charge to just manslaughter. He reckons that since he hasn’t signed the divorce papers that half of what she has belongs to him, especially since he has wasted away his own huge inheritance! Sentinel Agent Chris Constantine should have been in charge of the murder of the Humble on the beach, but Hardwick is determined to push him out of town completely and have his own family rule everything in Brimstone Bay!
Her unruly magic has already managed to destroy one piece of evidence and trying to have it tested has given a huge advantage to the Hardwick coven, in their wish to have the Sentinels banished from the town and Esme and her family found to be interfering and held at fault! Esme is going to be facing a shortened timescale to solve the murders before she and Chris are arrested for interfering with the police. Never mind a bit of potion use to gain access to a certain piece of evidence, in a very witchy way! Dasterdly Drew isn’t satisfied with what Esme manages to do for him and as expected, breaks his word and tries to force her to sell off the castle to appease his lack of funds. All the pieces of the puzzle need to be in place, for Esme to work out who was behind the killings and how they got away with it, when most of the suspects had alibis with another. True colours are revealed and the ghosts have a bit of fun making those people pay, with a bit of ghostly interaction but without breaking the witch rule of never revealing magic to a Humble! A good murder mystery that the guilty party took a long time to plan and thought they had the ideal opportunity to succeed. I look forward to seeing whether Esme and Chris get more involved in the next book and whether they can break the hold the Hardwick coven have on the town! Our heroine has her hands full when her ex shows up unannounced. And it a murder (or not) and the usual mix of spooks and our heroine is going to be one busy witch.

This is book four of the series, but it works just fine as a standalone. Everything you need to know will be apparent at the beginning of the story.

This is a cozy witch mystery. The story is well written, easy to read and fun, with an amazing bit of humor worked in. Just the names of the characters are enough to give me a chuckle. The characters are well developed and distinct, whether they be good or bad. I also found the mystery to be well done with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Overall, it was a very fun read and I look forward to many more.

Highly recommended.

Do Not Charm might be in the title, but this book totally charmed me! I loved Esme right from the first few pages. An absolutely fabulous cast of characters who made for great suspects and a whole host of clues and twists that made for an amazing mystery as well.

When I got too tired to finish it at night I picked it up first thing in the morning (before coffee!!) to read the last chapters and find out whodunit. While this is the Book 4, it can be read as a standalone and gives enough background info without being bogged down or giving anything away.

Luckily for me there's a box set of the first three books in the series which I'm going to pick up so I can read all things Esme. If you like witty, charming, clever mysteries and characters with witches and ghosts in the mix, you will like this.

Esme is going to have to face her past when her soon ex-husband and his family come to town. Esme will do what she can to keep the peace for the sake of one person. Esme is also trying to help Chris with his trouble with Hardwick. Esme will be pulled in to a murder investigation that also has Chris's future on the future. Esme will have to learn to look past what she thinks she knows, to find the truth. Esme will also have to deal with her magic going crazy too.

This was such a interesting read. Really enjoyed what was revealed about Esme and parts of her past. Her magic and relationships with everyone. It was a really good read, that will hook you. I am really looking forward to the next one.

First book by R.K. Dreaming I read and what a really amazing book. The character, Esme Westbrim, has her soon to be ex-husband (Drew) and his family with friends shows up unexpected. Murder x2 happens and Esme must solve it to keep Drew from selling half of her home (castle). You definitely need to read to find out who did the killing. Esme is still trying to work her magic and it has a tendency of backfiring on her. The book is filled with mayhem, trouble, mystery, humor, and of course magic. What a truly great writer and I cannot wait to read more. Definitely recommend it if you love a great mystery.

Esme has her ex, Drew, showing up at her castle causing trouble and then getting arrested for killing his brother. That is just the tip of the iceberg. She has to figure out who the murderer is, save her castle and get Drew to sign the divorce papers. Just another day of happiness. The characters are terrific. The storyline has drama, mystery, murder, surprises, twists and more. Loved the castle locale and the way she found to keep it. The ending was great. Can not wait for the next book in the series.

Piling on the Troubles . . .

Witch Esme Westbrim cannot believe that her cheating ex-husband Drew and his family arrived uninvited at her castle. She has her hands full with non-magical guests, an uncontrollable teenage ghost, and Drew’s presence; then the real trouble comes her way!

Drew is arrested for murdering his brother Nick. Aunt Elvira died on the same day. Very strange timing. And Esme uncovers a plot to steal her castle, and her magic starts spiralling out of control. Can Esme solve all of these problems, or will her uncontrolled magic cause harm as well?

Esme puts up with so much! Her ex and his mistress, who is an ex friend, showing up unannounced. If it weren’t for Aunt Elvira’s being there, well, those two would have been gone! Then there is a murder, that the ex is accused of, and what appears to be a suicide. Too many unannounced house guests and all with a motive. Crazy stuff! And we can’t forget about the corrupt police and mayor…yikes! Greedy was actually awesome, though! What she did was just too funny! Loved the book! . Reunions and greed

Poor Esme gets blind-sided when her soon to be ex husband shows up for his aunts visit to the castle. Then it turns out his new girlfriend Sarah is there along with his brother and several others. Things get hectic after 2 deaths occur and Esme has to prove that her ex, of all people, is innocent. Girl cant catch a break!

It was interesting to finally meet the man that broke Esme's heart. And some of his family. It was also fun to see the closeness that Chris and Esme had started to develop. Cant wait for the next!

Never saw it coming

Ok I admit I wanted Drew to be guilty of murder. I mean who wouldn't right? He was everything a person could easily despise. Esme with her friends and family sets about trying to find the murderer of Nick and also helping Chris stay in Brimstone Bay and help protect the magical people there. I think Esme definitely has a crush on Chris. Oh did I mention Esme is a vampire witch. Her aunt who is visiting her also dies. Is this and Nick's death related? Read the book to find out mord. I highly recommend it.

Evil doesn’t win.

Death X2 comes to Brimstone Bay again. “Wandless “ Esme gets into another police investigation, she is having magic issues which cause her slowness in solving the crimes. With the help (unknown exactly) from the resident ghosts, Drew finally signs the Divorce papers.
Esme is still trying to find/release her powers. She is also trying to figure how to stop from becoming a full vampire, which most of her friends and family don’t know. Lost of twists
and turns, great clues. Love the series!

This book finds Esme trying to solve two murders, with the help of her cousins and friends. It doesn't help that all the suspects are old friends. Read how Esme and company figure out the clues. When her still not yet officially ex-husband appears with an ill auntie in tow, has Esme finally got her best opportunity for getting Drew to sign the divorce papers? or is he ready to cheat whomever he can - until he finds himself in legal trouble?

Deceptions, depressions and scandals

This was good.

I waited so long to read this one. It was worth the wait. The story, characters, and series are utterly addictive. Once I started reading I couldn't put the book down. Murder returns to Esme's world. This time, involving her soon-to-be ex and his family. It is a joy to follow along as she pieces out the truth. This book is definitely worth taking the time to read.

Each book gets better and better

This is the fourth book of hers I have read in as many days. In my opinion this is by far the best book yet. Her mystery solving skills keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting more and I love how it all ties together even if there are some unconventional methods along the way!!! Absolutely loved it, took me less than 24 hours to read
