Still Life:
The discovery of a dead body in the woods on Thanksgiving Weekend brings Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his colleagues from the Surete du Quebec to a small village in the Eastern Townships. Gamache cannot understand why anyone would want to deliberately kill well-loved artist Jane Neal, especially any of the residents of Three Pines - a place so free from crime it doesn't even have its own police force.

A Fatal Grace:
Winter in Three Pines, and the sleepy village is carpeted in snow. It's a time of peace and goodwill - until a scream pierces the biting air. A spectator at the annual Boxing Day curling match has been fatally electrocuted. Despite the large crowd, there are no witnesses and - apparently - no clues.

The Cruellest Month:
It's Easter, and on a glorious Spring day in peaceful Three Pines, someone waits for night to fall. They plan to raise the dead...When Chief Inspector Gamache of the Surete du Quebec arrives the next morning, he faces an unusual crime scene.

A Rule Against Murder:
It's the height of summer, and the wealthy Finney family have gathered at the Manoir Bellechasse to pay tribute to their late father. But as the temperature rises, old secrets and bitter rivalries begin to surface.

The Brutal Telling:
As Gamache and his colleagues start to dig under the skin of this peaceful haven for clues, they uncover a trail of stolen treasure, mysterious codes and a shameful history that begins to shed light on the victim's identity - and points to a terrifying killer...

I really enjoyed the beautiful phrasing of Louise Penny. She will often turn a phrase in such a way that makes me pause and think "wow that was beautiful". Sadly I did not take notes while reading. So no examples come to mind. Overall this is a slow paced detective story with an emphasis on character development. Inspector Gamache's super power is his ability to listen and observe. A very thoughtful and kind detective.

Unlike Agatha Christie I decided to read these books in order. To date I have found this very rewarding and so glad that I am. These novels I equate to Agatha Christie's Poirot and still seems to be a good fit, even more so that one is Canadian French and the other Belgium.

As you read the books you begin to pick up the longer overarching theme's in Louise Penny's works how the characters grow and change and even hidden story lines within the settings of the books that only become revealed as you read more of them.

Overall the series probably does deserve a 4 star rating, who knows, it could change over time. So far, it has been a very good decision to read the books in order written.

I'm still catching up with the first four or five Gamache novels which I missed when first published. The Cruellest Month, the third in the series, tells of the sudden death of Madeleine Favreau. Madeleine had shared a home with her old school friend Hazel Smyth, and was apparently a popular member of the Three Pines Community. So was her death, at a rather foolish seance organised by a group of villagers in the old abandoned Hadley House, a tragic accident or murder ? Gamache and his team soon identify multiple suspects, whilst grappling with the difficulties caused by Gamache having had the courage to root out corrupt officers within the Surete du Quebec.
