When she does, she experiences the adventure of a lifetime. That all changes when she is selected by the prestigious Galactic Geographic Society to photograph and record the flora and fauna of a newly discovered class M planet. Filled with hope and enthusiasm, she boards the S.S. America for the trip to Beta 3 Epsilon to begin her new project. Trying to raise a young girl among gunfights, swordfights, ship-to-ship battles, slave trades, deals, and some of the most feared raiders in human space is no small challenge. The only question is, Is Kathy up to the task?
This is the first book that I've read by this author and the first Sci Fi one too, and I really enjoyed it! It was full of adventure, war, love, and vulnerability. I loved that the main character was a woman, actually there were three main women, and they were each strong and fierce! I liked that the story went from present to past to present. It definitely kept me engaged, and I love that there is a cliffhanger. I want to know what happens next!
An Understandable, Easy-to-Follow, but Definitely Exciting Sci/Fi World
Rapier, by R. A. “Doc” Correa, is a Sci/Fi adventure, a genre I’ve not ventured into before. I tend to get lost in all the made-up place and people names in this genre. However, Correa’s story was easy to follow; all names understandable, all characters like friends or enemies. I was pulled into the story from the first page, as if I were right there among all the action, and there is plenty.
Protagonist, Kathy Masters has never been off earth before, but ends up a prisoner in the brig of a pirate craft. Her exit and ascension to unbelievable good fortune, rescued by privateer and plunderer, Jim Gibb, leaves a breathless trail in her wake, till she ends up again, succumbing, and ready to die in another brig. But with more than one reason to live, will she give up that easily as she is near to drawing her last breath?
This story takes us to the far reaches of the galaxy, maybe beyond, where wars are fought and pirates abound. Correa’s description of the starship’s controls, the entire ship, and the variety of ships themselves, left me smiling. I was there! Too, Correa’s buildup and development of his characters is wonderful. They have human emotions because they are human, but they also deal with outer space life and other creatures and that provides a whole new set of emotions, needs, and deeds to contend with.
This story is simply too big to try to describe in one brief review. As I stated, this is my first attempt at reading Sci/Fi, but I now wait with bated breath for the release of the next story in the series, which would be Razor.
This story is a must as a TV series. It has everything, pirates, gods, technological wonders, emotion in droves, tear-jerking and heart-warming moments, and of course weird space creatures. The story is written as a self-biography with Kathy telling it--she gets a job offer to photograph strange life on a distant planet, except her ship is raided by pirates, and she's taken captive. She becomes one of them and has wonderful adventures until they are captured and she is traded. It's not the end, she escapes from the world authorities. Can't wait for the sequel. The author has created a special cosmos which is split up between the major powers on Earth, the Americans, the Chinese, the French...they're not formally at war, but all want to expand the space footprint they control. And of course, you have the Brotherhood, pirates exploiting the conflicts, reminding me of the English and French privateers of the Caribbean stealing from the Spanish
If you're a science fiction fan, this saga is for you.
Kathy Masters never expected to journey to the stars, but when she was given the opportunity to travel, she experienced a lifetime of challenging adventures. Her journey was filled with abductions, encounters with merchants, raids, and the constant question of whom to trust. Although she was held captive against her will, she also had a story to tell and photographs to capture. Notably, she was not alone, she cared for a little girl as if she were her own. The excitement of traveling to unknown places, encountering battles, and witnessing mythical creatures permeates the book, leaving readers with a beautiful ending as she sets sail. Overall, it’s a captivating adventure worth reading. (As a writer/Author I manage to: reread and finish the book on my off days. It is indeed a great book.)
Rapier by R. A. “Doc” Correa is a swashbuckling space opera adventure that updates privateering of the past to a modern fight for freedom for planets that have been colonized by Earth. In many ways the book is also a parable for treating woman respectively while promoting their equality. In addition, Mr. Correa adds his concern over Chinese hegemony. These themes are covered while providing a nonstop adventure, with vivid descriptions of alien worlds, entities, and technologies. I look forward to Mr. Correa’s continued story telling.
I read this story awhile back, but just revisited it again. This is a fun, out-of-this-world adventure story — think a swashbuckling space saga — that reminded me of those old, classic Errol Flynn pirate movies that I used to enjoy on AMC back when I had cable — except this is set in the future on high-tech spaceships instead of sloops and galleons, with the characters traveling the stars instead of the oceans. Pick up a copy and enjoy!
Not being a huge sci-fi fan I never would have imagined before reading this book that I would now be saying it's one of my favorites read not just recently but EVER!
This author's writing style is no nonsense. There's nothing flowery or pretentious about it! What you will get is an action packed world-building story that will grab you from the start! And yes, it's even a great love story!
The characters are interesting and diverse and find their way into your heart before you even realize it, and the storyline is incredible! I am so pleasantly surprised by this gripping tale that I can't wait for the next Installment!
I simply can't imagination anyone that gives this book a chance not thoroughly enjoying it, no matter what genre you normally read! I'm so happy I did! Well done, Mr. Correa, well done!
