So much praise for this book! I absolutely tore through it with relish and it was just, on the whole, a fantastic book to read.

Even if you don’t think you need this book, you do! I can guarantee there will be something in it for you and something that you can take away. Whether it’s feeling behind on where you think you should be, have fallen into the trap of comparing yourself to others or never quite feeling like you’ll match up to things, there is an awful lot you can take away from this book. You will find your Big Deal Energy in this!

It’s written in such a gloriously easy to read manner and it is so so entertaining. I seriously adore how this book was written. There’s a fantastic balance of humour, the authors own experiences, advice, life lessons and fun in this book. It’s really great and I actually barked out with laughter at several points along the way. Right from the beginning, I warmed to it immediately and loved going through the pages.

It really builds you up and has you nodding along, feeling empowered and like you could strut around a boardroom with sass (I’ve never been in a boardroom and not sure I ever will.. but that’s not the point!).

Reading this book really feels like a discussion with a friend. Like she’s giving you advice and she’s making you laugh and you feel great and happy and like you can take on the world. You can get through the things that scare you, take you out of your comfort zone and do all those things that grow you as a person.

There’s actionable points and a great section at the end of every chapter called the Big Deal Diary, taking you from a place of passive reading to a call go action!

It’s a book for everyone, no matter what you do in your life or what you want to work on, it’s a book that has something in it for you. And any book that gets me thinking and gives me a takeaway is definitely deserving of five stars from me!

I was lucky enough to read this with thanks to the author and publishers via NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.

I like to get a bit of motivation from my self-help books, something that inspires me to try something differently, break up the work year, and tackle a problem differently. This book, by Erin King, is targeted toward women and building confidence, finding your voice, and stepping up. I think every woman should be having these conversations or reading these types of books from time to time. I recommend this one! Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a pep-talk book extra-extraordinaire with über enthusiastic coach Erin King. Mixing humour and real-life examples she's on a mission getting women to unlock their audacity and take their rightful place in today's (still) male dominated world.

Quote from the book: "This book is about preparing, evaluating, and daring to make the decision to turn up your volume, your truth, your bravery, your conviction, your drive, or whatever it is you need in that moment."

The book is full of little nuggets of wisdom to help women be more sure of themselves, take more space, go for what they want. Instead of being beautiful, kind and compassionate (the top three positive traits for women according to a study cited by King) they should be allowed to be a leader, ambitious and strong, just like the top traits for a man in the same study.

Some of Erin King's cracking quotes from the book:

“It’s better to be someone’s shot of whiskey, than everyone’s cup of tea, love.”

"If we follow the advice to listen twice as much as we speak, we risk never getting a word in. We risk not having the opportunity to be heard."

"Why do you need others to love what you’re doing for you to love it?"

“...happy people are happy for people.”

"your chances of happiness skyrocket every time you make a decision to move toward something you know you truly want, versus doing something out of fear that you someday might regret it if you don’t."

With this book you have Erin King as your cheerleader and coach on your journey to a more audacious you.

Self-help books are always going to be hit or miss. Sometimes, an author has good advice, but it's not advice that you need or not advice that's right for the moment. That's how I felt about this.

There were lots of good points made by the author, but I found it grating. Part of it was the tone, which seems to want to be your girlfriend and is a little too comfortable and too slang-y, but part of it was just that the advice felt like common sense to me. As I say, we all need different advice, but the advice I'm personally never going to need is that I'm important and that I matter.

I really do appreciate how open this author was about her own failures and struggles and I thought the active journaling component was a good addition. I did think it felt a little bit "prosperity gospel"-esque in that if you try hard, believe in yourself, you can do anything, when the reality is that some people face external pressures that can't be solved that way.

I also felt a little like this was an advertisement for the author's other products (course, conference, etc.). As someone who wasn't aware of who she was beforehand, it just kind of felt like I was being sold a product. It feels a little like she wants to be the next Rachel Hollis. Maybe that's appealing to some, but it's not for me.

I received a free ARC from the publisher for providing an honest opinion.

First of all, she is really difficult to listen to. She talks in broken phrases that don’t connect, so that was a challenge on audible. She does give a few pieces of solid advice, such as not giving air time to hate. I’m in agreement that most women have been taught politeness to a fault and then allow idiots and mean spirited people to rant in our direction, when really, we need to collectively speak against workplace verbal abuse. But most of the book is typical “boss bitch” jargon that is misleading and possibly dangerous, as I have heard this kind of bad business advice for at least a decade from “boss girls” who make money off of MLM salespeople. “Fake it til you make it” and “just believe in yourself” is old, tired, and frustrating for women who have been out in the world and who have been screwed and stung by direct sales BS. I finally had to stop listening when she bragged about laying off her staff post covid so that she could make more money. That kind of business is the reason common everyday workers are in a bad place now. Every whim of every CEO results in firing people and starting again, not in helping employees pivot with them. Working people are shoved in and out of bad businesses run by bad inflated ego CEOs who think that their business model is only reflective of their own bank accounts and fancy toys. I’m over it. I cannot recommend this book.

Erin King is a professional entrepreneur and keynote speaker. In You’re Kind of a Big Deal, she teaches women how to unleash their inner audacity and use the Big Deal Energy that they were meant to unleash.

This book explores many principles that affect women and she discusses them in a relatable level. During her topic on compartmentalizing she shared her own personal stories of her past failure when her multi-million dollar start-up failed. She helps women push past the failure and turning those failures into earning “success stars.” She also warns against not defining ourselves by our failures.

Your support network matters, and Erin explored how to build your squad full of warriors and cheerleaders. She explores the role each plays on your team, how to build your team, and how to be a good teammate to others. As a bonus she deals with the topic of naysayers at work and home and how to use your team to overcome obstacles.

This book is the book that every woman should read—especially those who know they are meant for more and may be hiding from fear, whether fear of success or what others think. I found myself taking plenty of notes from this gutsy bold warrior entrepreneur. Definitely worth the read!

I normally don't care for books of this genre: the advice is focused on a group that I'm not part of, or is simply not relevant to me. This book is written for the females, and might not suit those who can't relate to those experiences.

This book, however - I felt like I had a good friend come over, and share stories of how accomplishments are done, and stories of what happens if they work, or don't work, or get sidetracked. This was a outstanding look at how to improve the chances of things going well for you. And a blunt look at how others might resist the changes, and how to deal with this.

Not all changes have to be large to others - and that's one of the lessons that I took from this. Making a small shift to get you what you need is sometimes the best step forward - there's no one saying this is the only step you need to take. The diary section helps you take the time to put these ideas into words. If you do the work with this, I can see that being able to make the changes you want would be easier.

The words are read, but the work of this book is far from over. And that's a delight.

Finding my voice has been a challenge as a teacher, as a counselor, and as a woman. For many years I agreed to favors, advances, countless things I didn't want to do simply because I thought saying no was equivalent to being lazy or not a good friend/good daughter/good person. It was when I went to grad school that I learned a lesson that is reiterated in much better detail throughout this book: Assertive DOES NOT equal Aggressive. I am so glad this book exists and I plan to use parts of it in my counseling girl group lessons. This book reads like a discussion with a friend and made me feel less alone in my constant battle with Imposter Syndrome and feeling the need to be perfect simply out of the fear of failure that borders on phobia. I felt warm and welcomed from the beginning of this book to the end- and I typically do not read anything outside of fiction. This was wonderful and I feel changed and validated from reading it.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. Erin's personality and writing style is very fun. She has some great motivational/inspirational stories to share. It's definitely a great female empowerment in life, but mostly in business, book. However, it started to fizzle out about halfway through for me. I kept reading because I did truly enjoy her personality. The beginning of the book hooked me with some awesome stories right out of the gate. But, halfway through it turned into fewer stories and more advice and opinion. The stories that support the advice and opinion are what keep me engaged, so I still think the book is great but it was just a bit less engaging for the second half.

If you're looking for an inspirational business book, then this is excellent. You might do better than me at reading the sections that turn into mostly advice. I'm here for the fun personal stories.

This book does the motivation speak by telling women they can achieve anything by being brave.

I loved the conversational tone since I am a big skeptic about self help books and don't normally go for them.

Charting out her problems and how she dealt with them was how the author tries to encourage the reader to do the same.

I do wish that part was shorter since you have to read through it to get to the advice. My kind of self help books - short.

Thank you netgalley for the ARC.

Listening to Erin read the audio book I was energized, motivated and left eager for more chapters. Thankfully, she includes some resources to keep her story going. It was honest, inspiring and gritty when it needed to be.

It was almost five stars, but with a portion within the book being used as a platform for share opinions on a group of people she didn't agree with, I couldn't give Erin full marks.

I loved so much about this book! I like the journal prompt component at the end of each chapter, and how it was formatted/laid out. Not every chapter was a message I needed, but I appreciated the ones that were.

I did feel like the chapters were a bit wordy and found myself thinking "get to the point" a couple of times with all the anecdotes, but that totally might be someone else's cup of tea!

I’m not usually one to pick up a non-fiction book, but this one had me excited from the get go! The way Erin writes makes it feel personable to the reader and the stories she tells shows a depiction of most people’s lives. I hope I can take some of this advice and use it in my every day life.

I listened to the audiobook and to be honest I couldn’t finish it. It listens as a podcast almost, but not in a good way. I disliked how every reference was about someone else and not her. It’s not as relatable as I thought it would.

This book sounded really up my street. I love these positive/self-help/inspiring reads.
However, I found this book incredibly slow and dull.

It didn't say anything new and the anecdotes and stories just felt so wishy-washy and I didn't always feel they were relevant in backing up King's points. I really wanted to come away from this book feeling inspired but this book just left me flat.

This book takes an empathetic approach and gives bite size approaches and allows you to have kindness and patience with yourself when dealing with life. This is so necessary for everyone to read in life. Highly recommend. Especially loved the reflection to true life to humanize my feelings and relate. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
