Lucy was just looking for a fresh start when she moved to Woodstock, NY, and met her next-door neighbors, Vera and John. She is instantly drawn to them and begins to feel safe and secure. She fled from an abusive relationship in Brooklyn and had hopes of lying low, but now that she has friends, the trio begins to spend all their time together. One day Vera lets it slip that the couple wants to pull a "Van Gogh" as they too want/need to escape their troubles. Lucy wants to be a good friend; she treasures their friendship, so she reluctantly agrees to help the couple stage an accidental death. But what happens when John turns up dead???
This was an engaging book full of twists and turns. This was a fun ride that grabbed me from page one and held on the entire way. The author did a great job of showing all of Lucy's thoughts, insecurities, motives, etc. I loved that even when I thought I knew what was going on, Konen still had a couple of tricks up her sleeve. This was an absorbing page-turner that had the shocks coming one after the other at the end.
This was my first book by Leah Konen but it will not be my last. I found this book to be perfectly paced, brilliantly plotted, and a riveting page-turner. Konen also scores big points for pulling off her reveals without anything coming out of left field. I loved that everything was plausible and ultimately made sense.

This story involves two tales of domestic suspense.
The first tale began in the main character's previous life in NYC. It involves domestic abuse both physical and emotional at the hands of her boyfriend. In the beginning, we find her secretly leaving town to escape him by moving to rural Woodstock, NY. She is constantly living in fear that he will find her eventually.
There, hiding in her small cabin, she meets her neighbors, a lively tempting couple who immediately take her in as family and she them. But they too have their own troubles, and it is that which begins the second tale. The couple shares their big bombshell, that if the husband were to fake his death it would solve all their problems. The big question: will Lucy help them with their scheme. Surprising herself she realizes that she wants to help them. But as in all complicated and especially illegal plans, they tend to go wrong, very wrong.
This should have been an easy 4 star except for two main cons. What I struggled with was the use of the first tale. The plot was built up, then somewhat brushed aside. I had been rather invested in it, so the conclusion to that was not satisfying. There was a lack of cohesiveness between the two storylines.
Secondly, the author had difficulties concluding. I felt like I was reading a Scooby Doo reveal ending on repeat. At one point I was not certain the book was ever going to end. Like the birthday candle that never blows out. It is only fun at first.
I think some content editing was definitely needed before the final proof, but overall I was intrigued for majority of this crazy tale of tales.

Moral of the story, for me, here was - always tell the truth!! This was a very clever, fast paced, twisty debut thriller that I highly recommend! There were so many plot twists and different red herrings thrown my way, I had total whip lash!! Being the suspense/thriller obsessed reader that I am, I eventually figured things slightly before the final reveal came, but nonetheless I still enjoyed this one immensely. If I had to describe this novel, I would say it's a bit of a mystery-unreliable character driven (to an extent)- trust no one suspense, set in the backdrop of a small, lazy Woodstock town. The characters were very nicely fleshed out and also fairly likable, but I still got the vibe there was way more to every single one of them that had not yet been revealed, which I loved! The ending does reveal 'whodunit,' but IMO leaves us readers with some questions, as it felt a bit open-ended to me. I'm intrigued by this author for sure and will keep my eye out for her next release!

Lucy King flees Brooklyn to escape an abusive ex-boyfriend. She tells no one where's she's headed as she attempts to vanish without a trace. Lucy moves into a house in Woodstock hoping to settle into an unobtrusive, quiet, invisible life, but when her irresistible neighbor Vera invites her over to dinner Lucy can't seem to say no. Soon Lucy, Vera, and her husband John are inseparable - an odd but tight-knit threesome dining and hiking together almost daily. As Lucy remains diligent about her own security, she never stops looking over her shoulder for her ex and soon comes to realize that she's grown dependent on her neighbors. As time passes, Lucy's surprised at how hostile the people in Woodstock are toward John. Accusations fly, threats are hurled, betrayals uncovered, secrets kept . . . until they're not. The setting is picture perfect and the pace is like flames chasing a fresh trail of gasoline. The fire is hot and furious and you just know there's going to be a big, shocking explosion when it all comes together in the end. Konen created a unique cast of characters led by an unreliable narrator that tempts readers into a complex maize of events and possibilities - and then abandons them with the dilemma of figuring out "who done it". It's been awhile since I've maneuvered such a curvy, twisted plotline, and I can tell you I changed directions several times before I escaped that maize by figuring out what was going on. I was right in the end, but that fact in no way diminished the intensity of this anxiety inducing thriller. This author's writing will keep you entranced and searching for answers until the very end. All The Broken People is a tense, gripping, all-consuming Domestic Thriller that I highly recommend. Fans of mystery, suspense, and thrillers (especially Domestic Thrillers) are going to love this one!

This author seems to have learned everything she knows about women by watching reality TV. Lucy, in her late 20s, gloms on to her new neighbors like a nursery schooler clinging to the legs of her teacher. And then there are the two women fighting over rights to their "bestie”. Really? Lucy is a skanky sociopath who doesn’t deserve her cute little dog and I’m sorry that I read this. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

Leah Konen hits it out of the park with her debut suspense, All the Broken People, in which a faked death goes horribly awry. Konen delivers with Lucy, who escapes to rustic Woodstock for a fresh start, only to discover her new neighbors are harboring disturbing secrets of their own. A sly, up-all-night thriller that ends with a surprising bang.

Another day, another mediocre mystery/suspense. Deep sigh.
It's barely been a month since I read All the Broken People, but as I went to write a short summary of it just now for this review, I realized that already I couldn't remember the names of the main characters. That alone should speak for itself about how memorable the story was. It would be fair to say that it hasn't stuck with me.
In essence, this book is about a girl who moves to a very small town to get away from her abusive boyfriend, whose sister was her best friend. She doesn't really have any friends, so when the couple next door to the house she's renting shows her kindness and takes her under their wing, she quickly begins to see them as family (and vice versa). But the couple is trying to escape from something, too--that something being the rumors that the husband was having an affair with one of his underaged female art students. In an effort to avoid a lawsuit that would bankrupt the couple, they decide to fake the husband's death with the girl's help and then all run away together as one happy family. The only thing is that the morning after they fake the husband's death, he turns up dead for realz. Dun dun dun.
I think that the best thing that can be said about this book is that it wasn't bad. It was just like any other run-of-the-mill whodunnit, with nothing that really surprises you or makes you think or forces you to question everything and everyone. Nothing really to write home about, good or bad.
But I do have this to say about the story: if the only thing driving the suspense--that is, by keeping the mystery from being solved or the characters in danger--is the stupidity of the characters and their actions, then it is going to be a poor thriller/mystery. Nothing kills the thrill more than when taking some action could so obviously resolve a major conflict, but the character is too foolish to see it. Or, by the same token, when doing something has very obvious repercussions, but the character either doesn't realize this or is too stupid and short-minded to care. And, unfortuantely, that was the case with this book. On several occasions, our main character's foolishness and poor decision-making had me slapping my forehead and thinking awful things like, "if you're that stupid, you deserve to die." Not my finest moment, but then again, it wasn't hers either.
I almost forgot to mention that on top of suffering from a foolish main character, the book is also pretty damn slow. It takes half the book for the husband to even turn up dead, which we know about in advance thanks to the plot summary. That means 150+ pages of pre-spoiled build-up before you even get to the mystery that was promised. And I just don't have the attention span for that kind of thing, especially when the mystery ain't so mysterious.
Read this book, if you must, or don't. You won't have too many regrets either way.

For some reason, I was thinking I had All the Broken People by Leah Konen on my NetGalley shelf but now that I have finished the book, I found out that I actually didn't! I do want to read her most recent (and second ) thriller The Perfect Escape, so that might be why I was thinking about this one, but either way, I am so happy I found out about it and read it! This is one of the best thriller debuts that I have ever personally read, and I loved how the surprises just kept coming all the way up until the end. I never had anything figured out, and even my suspicions turned out to be wrong! The pacing was also very quick and Konen's writing was incredibly engaging, it made me very excited that she has a huge backlist of young adult novels that I can read too.
The audiobook was also really great and narrated by Jesse Vilinsky who I have listened to before and always enjoy. There is one viewpoint for the whole story, and I thought Vilinsky was perfect for it. Our leading lady Lucy is on the run when she meets her new neighbors who seem pretty perfect to her, but as she learns more and more about them, she starts thinking that might not necessarily be the case. But don't be fooled, this is as much about Lucy as it is about her neighbors, and the plot led to places I couldn't have seen coming. I recommend going into All the Broken People as blind as possible because it would considerably hurt your experience by seeing spoilers. I was just blown away by how well done this book was, and now I really can't wait to read more from Konen!

I think this going to be a popular psychological thriller and I expect most people will love it more than I did. It has a Gone Girl type feel to it. And yes, I hate comparisons to Gone Girl, but maybe it's old enough now that I can get away with it? Either way, it is twisty and suspenseful and if you don't read a lot in the genre you don't know who-done-it until the end. Unfortunately, I have read several similar style books and I did figure out who the "bad guy" was before the end. But, it still didn't end exactly as I expected it to, which was good.
I had trouble relating to the main characters and I didn't really connect with them. I found them to be moody and secretive and they drank a lot. They made bad decisions and focused on the wrong things at times, jumping to conclusions. I don't necessarily need to love my main characters, but it helps me to connect with them. In this case, I just struggled with that which made the story a little less enjoyable for me.
This was the first book I read by Leah Konen and I generally liked her writing style. I would be interested in reading something else by her in the future. 3.5★

I had trouble relating to the main characters and I didn't really connect with them. I found them to be moody and secretive and they drank a lot. They made bad decisions and focused on the wrong things at times, jumping to conclusions. I don't necessarily need to love my main characters, but it helps me to connect with them. In this case, I just struggled with that which made the story a little less enjoyable for me.

Leah Konen is a new author to me, but she sure caught my attention. Her style is smooth, good writing, and moving story. Right from the first page I needed to read further. This book held my interest all the way through, always urging me to read on. And just when I thought I had figured the mystery out - twice actually -I again, was surprised.
Lucy runs from her big city life and hides in Woodstock New York. In a small cabin, way out in the wilderness. She meets her neighbors Vera and John. It appears that all three people have found what they were looking for - a best friend. Until Lucy starts to hear rumors.
All three of these people are running. Each one has their own cross to bare. And as they plan an escape - which includes John's death - things turn all too real. Then in hindsight Lucy must determine who is telling the truth and who wants to put the blame on her.
I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery and will read more of Leah Konen's books in the future.

A twisty and surprising thriller/mystery
MC, Lucy moves up to Woodstock NY from the city to get away from her abusive boyfriend, Davis.
She is a little odd and nervous but considering the relationship she is running away from that’s understandable.
Her new neighbors, Vera and John are so sweet to her and they become fast friends. John and Vera own a gallery in town and John is the painter. No one else in town wants anything to do with them because of a scandal that they deny happened. Lucy doesn’t want to lose her new (and only) friends so she chooses to ignore the rumors.
A secret plan that the 3 of them make together ends up all messed up when John ends up dead. Yup! And that’s not a spoiler folks- keep reading and see if you can figure out this tangled spider web.
Leah Konen creates some excellent tension in her writing and her characters are so full of flaws you won’t know who to trust from one page to the next.
This was a fun, exciting and fast read.

The premise of this one totally sucked me in, faking someone’s death just sounds like the worst idea ever and you just know that nothing will go off as planned, right?! On top of that, Lucy has a shadowy past and the relationship dynamics between her and her new neighbors, Vera and John just intrigued me to no end. It definitely had me gripped and felt like a pretty solid domestic thriller.
This is one of those tricky thrillers that I figured would be pretty predictable and average at best the whole time I was reading it. It was definitely compulsive and entertaining, I just assumed I knew exactly where things were headed and I was dead wrong which is always the best! The ending was solid and threw me for a loop (or two) and I found it to be really clever in the end. It made me appreciate the whole book all the more with one of those, ok I see what you did there moments with a really fantastic reveal. Definitely recommended if you’re tired of thrillers all feeling the same, this one was pretty original.
This is one of those tricky thrillers that I figured would be pretty predictable and average at best the whole time I was reading it. It was definitely compulsive and entertaining, I just assumed I knew exactly where things were headed and I was dead wrong which is always the best! HAHAHAHA. Wrong! Everyone in this book is stupid and unlikable. It's so hard to root for anyone. Put down that bottle of pinot hun and clear your head for once.
Okay, this isn't a bad psycho thriller. Once I get past the unlikable voice (audio book) of the main character I was fine with it. First half the story was good. After a major event, it got pretty dumb. It's like watching a train wreck. Too long? Too many twists? Probably. If you like The Girl on the Train, you might like this one.

This book starts off with a bang and I LOVE when thrillers hook me right from the beginning. I was fascinated by the story from the very first chapter and I couldn’t wait to see what else was going to happen! I absolutely love when thrillers not only have a super intriguing plot, but also each of the characters. I was SO invested in this story because I wanted to learn more about the characters and how everything was going to come together in the end. This book was truly so entertaining from the very beginning and there was never a dull moment! I often found myself so lost in the story that I wasn’t even actively trying to figure out the end, which is when you know it’s a good book 😝🙌🏼
The only very minor issue I had with this book was that the ending wasn’t *as* shocking as I was hoping it would be. The build up was so fantastic that I was hoping for a more explosive ending, but it was still very satisfying nonetheless ☺️ You guys definitely need this book and it would be the PERFECT summer thriller! Plus, there’s a cute dog companion so what more could you ask for 😜🐶

This fast-paced but nuanced thrill ride grabbed me on the first page and didn’t let go. With spare, haunting prose, a tense and richly wrought setting, intricate plotting, and twists that would make Hitchcock himself gasp, All the Broken People is a masterful debut. On one level, it was a page turner, but the characters spent a lot of time drinking wine and then making decisions that didn't make good sense. This was not one of my favorite reads. Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC of All the Broken People by Leah Konen. I love domestic thrillers and this one intrigued me with its promise to be twisty and addictive.
Lucy King is searching for a fresh start and a clean break from her abusive boyfriend in Woodstock, New York. When she meets her new neighbors, Vera and John, she is sure that they are her new best friends. Soon, they ask her to help stage John’s death in order to make him “disappear” from the rumors and threats of small town society. Lucy reluctantly jumps on board so that she won’t lose her new besties. When the plan goes awry and John is murdered, Lucy questions everyone before it is too late.
This book started out very slow for me and I had a hard time getting into it. It did pick up speed by 50%, but several things had me scratching my head saying, “That would never happen.” There are also many predictable plot points that had me saying, “I’ve seen that before.” The ending is indeed very twisty, but too many twists to be believable. I didn’t really like any of these characters either, but I guess that was the point, hence All the Broken People. When the most interesting character is the dog, I rest my case. Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me.

I loved the idea of this book and tried to continue on but it never pulled me in and it really dragged on and on for me. Nothing was happening but the same thing just kept happening. This one didn’t work for me.

There are so many troubled, unreliable characters that you can’t trust any of them. This is a fast-paced book that you won’t want to put down.
This is author Leah Konen’s first thriller after writing young adult novels. Looking forward to her next twisty book.

I was absolutely here for that cover and synopsis. Sadly, I was disappointed.
I liked Lucy well enough. She’s sort of unlikable and definitely unreliable and I love both of those things. Vera and John were odd to me from the very start and if that was done intentionally, good job. There are a few other secondary characters, but we don’t get to know too much about them.
Plot wise, it was just okay. From the synopsis, I knew the husband was going to die, but I didn’t know it was going to take almost half the book before it happened. And the build up scenes of late night fancy dinners, too much wine, and a so-called connection were increasingly repetitive. There were loads of twists and at some point, it got to be too many to be enjoyable.
Overall, I did like the idea of this story and the running commentary of how women are treated was spot on. Unfortunately, the entire story lacked tension and mystery.

This thriller starts with the suspense cranked high as Lucy King relocates suddenly from Brooklyn to the outskirts of Woodstock, renting a small cottage sight-unseen in hopes to evade an abusive ex-boyfriend. She is smart and careful in her plan, but she yearns for closure and admits wanting to reach out to her ex despite the risk. The abuse played out in an non-typical way (i.e., micro-agressions that he explains away, or bruises mysteriously acquired during her sleep) that makes it quite believable he will seek retaliation. Lucy can't quite reconcile how a relationship that felt so right at the start morphed into something so treacherous. She'd be the first to admit she's not a great judge of character.
So when she gets swept up into a very intense friendship with her charismatic neighbor Vera and her artist husband John, she seems to ignore a whole bunch of red flags. Yet it's clear that Vera and John have a genuine affection for her and act as a welcome distraction to her anxious moments alone. They also seem to be in need of a friend since they have been shunned by most of the town based on rumors of John's impropriety... rumors that seem ill-founded in Lucy's mind.
Author Leah Konen takes time to build a complex triangle of attachment between the trio, with so many possibilities, motivations, and secrets to be untangled. But also genuine kinship and relatable emotion. Konen takes time to establish the characters' many facets as she builds to the key event hinted by the book jacket's tagline: "It's just a lie among friends... until someone ends up dead."
There is indeed a lie that Lucy takes part in, and a death. But the less you know going in, the better. Unlike most thrillers, I found myself wanting things for all the main characters, even in the moments that I didn't trust Vera and John. The ultimate themes of the book are more complex than the set-up would suggest. Have Lucy's codependent tendencies drawn her in to another dangerous situation with volatile people? Or is she taking a bold, positive step forward in trying to find allies and move away from victimhood? Miraculously, Konen doesn't resort to easy or tidy answers, even as she expertly leads readers to the surprising conclusion.

This book is one wild trip! Like from the get go it was amazing.
So we start off with Lucy, she runs off without a trace to escape her psycho abusive ex-boyfriend. When she flees she tells no one where she is fleeing to in the hopes that she will be able to leave with out a trace for him to follow. Once she finds a place Lucy meets Vera and John and they hit it off pretty well. They start hanging out and become really connected together, all the while Lucy is looking over her shoulder in fear that he is coming back, that he will find her. Then when all the town become kinda antogonistic with John, Vera and John convinve Lucy to help in staging Johns mysterious disappearance. But, what they had planned on how he would disappear didnt go according to plan and now there is a murder investigation. With everything going sideways now Lucy has the whole situation on her shoulders.

You have the windows down and the breeze blows your hair back as you cruise down the quiet road. The sun is shining and the clouds meander by as you make your way to a new place.
Except the clouds turn dark fast, the sun disappears and the air becomes bitterly cold. That new place and new start you craved has ended abruptly. You tried to run, but you couldn’t stay hidden.
This book had me second guessing myself every couple of pages and I love when a book leaves me floundering for answers and constantly throws me off. It started off really slow for me, and the abused lover running away is a scenario I’ve read recently and the story was sounding redundant. But once the plot turned and this book changed into a lot more than a runaway girlfriend, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
I recommend for those that love a dramatic thriller!

4.5 stars. Writer Lucy King rents a small cottage in Woodstock, New York. She's running from an abusive relationship and terrified her ex will find her. She meets next door neighbors Vera and John. Vera runs an art gallery and John paints. At the first meal they invite her to, they start talking about faking death to give art more value in a joking way. Well, they weren't joking. Lucy is so desperate for friends, she agrees to help.
To say there were startling twists in this story is an understatement. My brain was in overdrive -- did this person do it, did that person do it who did it? I have never seen so many viable suspects for what was happening to Lucy. Near the end, I thought the story was over. Far from it. I was truly fooled so I have to rate it 4.5 stars. This book is the author's first thriller and I thought it was a dramatic start. I really enjoy this type of book.
To say there were startling twists in this story is an understatement. My brain was in overdrive -- did this person do it, did that person do it who did it? I have never seen so many viable suspects for what was happening to Lucy. Near the end, I thought the story was over. Far from it. I was truly fooled so I have to rate it 4.5 stars. This book is the author's first thriller and I thought it was a dramatic start. I really enjoy this type of book.
