Life Remains does almost everything right, even though its portrayal of vampires is far away from what I prefer. I like vampires to be about death. These ones walk in daylight, eat normal food, run society, and spend a lot of time talking about coexistence.

The story follows several connected threads. Mabel, whose parents were killed by vampires, is forced to live under the protection of Frederick, one of their leaders. Ken, a human hunter (and Frederick’s lover), tries to help people without starting a war. Luke and Clint are two boys caught in the middle, owned by vampires who decide their fate without asking. Secrets, latent powers, old connections, and shifting loyalties slowly push everyone toward conflict even though most of them would really prefer to avoid one.

From a craft perspective, there’s little to complain about. The book is well paced, clearly structured, and easy to read. The chapters move quickly, action scenes are clean and understandable, and the story never gets bogged down in exposition. Characterization is solid across the board.

That said, the plot rarely surprises. The intrigue is competent but most twists are easy to see coming. If you’re waiting for a moment that genuinely changes the game, it never arrives.

Overall, Life Remains is a well-written, dark urban fantasy with vampires who are more interested in control, politics, and relationships than blood and death. To be fair, they don't experience emotions the way people do. A good pick if you want a smooth, fast read and don’t mind your vampires being civilized.

This fast-paced urban fantasy was an interesting take on vampires. They were all truly morally gray with different emotions than humans. The interwoven POVs plus the short chapters pulled me along the action-heavy, character-driven plot. I enjoyed the Supernatural feel to this story.

I rated this book four stars because there were times I was confused. I needed more world-building and explanations of how the magic system worked. Personally, it was too fast-paced for me.

I do think if you like urban fantasy, vampires, hunters, Supernatural, and fast-paced books, you will like this book!

Vengeance and secrets

Niranjan K pens a chemistry-filled vampires versus hunters story in Life Remains. I have read work from this author before, and I really enjoyed it. The characters were intense and real, and bent on revenge. Mabel has the best reason to be angry and want revenge against vampires, but it also seems to awaken something inside her. This author brings the story to life. Secrets and vengeance, and powers beyond mere mortals, bring this story to life, but there is a balance between light and dark. This author has a great imagination and I'm glad it's being shared with stories. The story brings in the believable, even if almost impossible. This is a magnetic story that kept this reader turning the pages. This read is more than just words on a page. Definitely an unpredictable story, my favorite kind! This title is very fitting for this story. Life Remains is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.

When vampires and hunters are no longer enemies, having reached some sort of accord for peaceful co-existence, what more deadly conflict or drama can there be? This is the book's underlying premise - when a girl becomes the ward of vampire who oversaw the killing of her parents and made her an orphan in the first place.
While more characters are introduced over the span of over 40 breezy, fast-read chapters, everything circles back to this orphan Mabel and why this alpha vampire Frederick remains intent on keeping her safe. Along the way, the usual genre tropes come into play - with reveals sounding familiar rather than earth-shattering - to provide the comfort zone a reader expects.
What makes this novel stand out is the sheer reading ease, drawing the reader along without being burdened with too much exposition. The villain, while well-shaded to be a little less one-dimensional, is nevertheless a tad too much on the nose to be much of surprise.

I don't usually go in for vampire tales but I found this fun. There were a host of complicated characters, all with their own secrets. I enjoyed seeing the vampires navigate the sociopolitical implications of a world where vampires live openly and have significant power. Really and interesting exploration of that idea.

Did need some more polishing and editing, but it's a fast read and certainly worth your time, especially if you like rather unique vampire tales full of morally gray characters.
