Sometimes, first love is better the second time around.

Kyle

I was four when I met Allie Dupree.
Ten when I stopped thinking she had cooties.
Fourteen when I realized I was in love with her.
And eighteen when I finally told her.

Then I never saw her again. I also never forgot her. And my heart never let her go.
Sixteen years after she’d disappeared without a word, she's back and there's no way in hell I'm letting her get away again. Especially because there are still burning embers of what we had. And, at the very least, I think I deserve some answers.

Allie

Returning to New York had never been a part of my plan. But having to watch my ex-husband move on with his pregnant fiancée before the ink had even dried on our divorce papers had made staying in Michigan impossible.

The odds of running into Kyle Hogan in Manhattan were one in three-million. But sure enough, my first month back, I came face-to-face with the one person I’d never wanted to see again.
What had happened sixteen years ago had ruined my life, and Kyle can never find out that secret. I won't let it destroy him, too.

Will their old flame be enough or will it come back to burn them? Again.

I love fresh approaches in telling love stories. Burning For You was a delightful surprise. It was a unique take on a second chance at love, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I liked how Kennedy developed the relationship from an early age, and all of the pitfalls and insanity of raging hormones as Allie and Kyle came of age and navigated their feelings for each other. Friends? More? Wait, no! Friends, right? I loved the rich, well-developed characters and the emotional roller coaster of Allie and Kyle. I love the humor and clever dialogue that made this book an enjoyable page turner. I recommend this book for anyone loving a second chance at love.

*sigh* Kyle and Allie's story was perfect! Throughout this series we've seen bits and pieces of Kyle but he was usually seen as a grumpy asshole which I didn't like at first but after awhile I became intrigued. What is it about a grumpy asshole that makes a perfect hero? lol

The first half of the book Kaye takes us through Kyle and Allie's childhood up through graduation. I loved watching their friendship and feelings for one another blossom! When they finally sleep together and then she runs off, I was a little annoyed and then devastated when she went through what she did and didn't reach out to Kyle. Then, Kaye jumps back to present time and they reconnect. I LOVE that Allie was up front with Kyle about what happened when she left and I loved that Kyle was understanding about what she went through. I appreciate that Kaye didn't drag it out. They do have some struggles that come up in the book but I loved that Kyle was committed to his relationship with Allie and, even when she was pushing him away, he didn't get mad and gave her her space but remained close-by. I can't wait to read more about the Hogans and their friends!

I also wanted to share that Kaye's description of Kyle and Allie's day at school on September 11th brought back memories of when I was a sophomore in high school the day the towers were hit. Like in the book, the school administrator came over the loudspeaker to announce that the towers were hit, school was done for the day and we'd be moved into the library or cafeteria for the rest of the day to watch the news coverage while we waited to get picked up. That was a scary day. I didn't know anyone personally who worked in NYC but, living in New Jersey, a lot of my school friends did.

I really enjoyed how this book was setup, showing Allie and Kyle each year and how their relationship grew up, all the way to high school. Their friendship, their first kiss, them dating other people, their jealousy, and them finally taking a chance of love.

The second half of the book is how they find their way back to each other. Working through the hurt, finding their friendship again, learning why Allie ran away from him.

My heart broke for Kyle as he never really got over her. Dating but never really finding another love. Allie is back in town after her marriage fell apart, and the reasons.

I loved that they got their HEA, and seeing them find their friendship again, as well as their connection.

Totally recommend giving this one a try! It is part of a series but it worked well as a standalone as well.

I received a free copy from the author, for an honest review. All opinions are my own and given freely.

This book. Wow.

Kyle’s book has been most anticipated by fans of Kaye Kennedy for months now, and I’d like to say that it did NOT disappoint!! Kyle and Allie work so well together, and Kaye covered sensitive topics with care and respect.

I cried and laughed multiple times when reading this, and I’m not usually one to get emotional like that. Both Allie and Kyle are so so strong, and Kaye has done an amazing job portraying that.

Guys, if you are reading this review right now, well STOP!! Stop reading this and go read this book, you won’t regret it! I promise 😘🔥

Honestly, I Was Not Expecting This Book To Be So Good!

An acquaintance recommended this book. I had never heard of Kaye Kennedy and did not have high expectations from a generic contemporary romance novel about a hot firefighter and a sultry femme fatale. How wrong I was.

If you buy this book, you’re getting two great books in one. The first half is a well-written YA coming of age romance. The rest is a steamy adult romance in the boy/girl-next-door trope.

The Opening

Allie grabbed my attention right from the start. The backstory hook regarding Allie’s ex-husband is so intriguing that I knew from the first few paragraphs I was going to love this book. Then began the childhood backstory, and Allie blew me away with a home run.

As she gets older, Allie does love her Pros & Cons lists. Sadly, they never seem to lead her toward the right decisions.

I was slower to warm to Kyle, as you will understand yourself while reading chapter one. However, he really came through for Allie when she “hit like a girl”.

The subtle feminist theme was unexpected. Within the first few pages, I knew this wasn’t going to be the archetypal romance novel I expected. All in all, I cannot imagine a better opening.

The Characters

Allie is awesome. Her actions as a four-year-old in chapter one firmly establish her as the hero kind of sympathetic character and a beacon for the feminist cause. She somewhat resembled Jane Eyre standing up for Helen Burns.

Additionally, the situation with Allie’s parents gives her a slight “victim” status, especially at the point she turns to Kyle’s mom for help when her own mom can’t.

Kyle has Allie’s back in subsequent chapters. I wasn’t sure I liked him in chapter one, but I warmed to him in chapter two. The various events that happen to him as the chapters progress made me invest in him more and more.

The other characters were well sketched but none stood out with the possible exception of Kyle’s parents and Melissa. Melissa isn’t an especially prominent character, but she’s handy as a catalyst for plot development at various points along the way in the first half of the novel. Kyle’s mom is a much more significant character throughout the whole book, especially in terms of her relationship with Allie.

The Plot

While the narrative style found in Burning For You is unique, the main conflict follows the standard girl-next-door trope frequently found in contemporary romance. This makes it somewhat predictable and yet somehow satisfying because of the interesting ways this is achieved.

Because the protagonists fall into the YA age range for the first half of this novel, you can expect to see teenage angst and the typical pressures faced by adolescents and young adults along the path to full adulthood.

The midpoint liquor store scene is extremely emotionally powerful. The foreshadowing is subtle, and the impact on both protagonists profound.

The conflict provided by Allie in the second half of the novel is awesome. Kennedy cleverly keeps it concealed from the reader until the midpoint, and it’s a doozy. The new story picks up speed after Allie sends a poignant message and Kyle gets pranked by his brothers.

However, the immediate consequences of the prank stretched plausibility to near breaking point. A coincidence of that kind can happen once in a novel. Three times within three days is over the top.

Another lesser plausibility issue is Kyle’s knowledge of obscure medical conditions. Yes, he’s had extensive first responder training, but this would not equip him with knowledge of congenital conditions. When presented with a Latin medical term as he was, he would surely ask what it meant.

I loved Autumn’s text message. Although it was only a small thing, for me, it was one of the highlights of the book. It made me laugh out loud. Following that, the final pinch in the plot is outstanding. It is well foreshadowed and executed with precision. It makes the resolution of the story all the sweeter.

Kennedy makes excellent use of recent historic events and her intimate knowledge of NYC and the NYFD (New York Fire Department) to create some of the plot turns along the way. When you’re reading, it becomes obvious this is from personal experience and not extensive research. It’s just too personal to be anything otherwise.

I can’t give examples regarding the historic events and locations without creating spoilers, but I can tell you that these turns are well-crafted with maximum emotional impact.

The Setting

Throughout this contemporary romance, the setting is vivid and very immersive. Much like with the plot turns, it’s obvious the author knows this location intimately. There are no incongruous details to disturb the suspension of disbelief.

Recently I reviewed Make Me Yours, which is currently on the Amazon bestsellers list. My main complaint with that story was that the police officer protagonist didn’t ever do any policing. It seemed he was only a police officer for the uniform, for the bedroom role-playing games, and when it became important for plot development.

I’m delighted to say that nobody could make such a complaint about Burning For You. In the second half of the book, the adult fiction part, Kyle is most definitely a fully-functioning and REAL firefighter. His job isn’t just there for the uniform fetish or to establish him as a sympathetic character. Instead, the reader is immersed in reality.

Something few American writers remember is that other nations have a different school system. Personally, I found it difficult to match up the stated grades to ages. It would have been nice to have their age in the chapter headings rather than school grades.

Similarly, with hockey, mention the word “ice” at least once when the sport is first introduced. Outside of North America, the other form of hockey is more popular.

The Structure & Prose

Burning For You is written in a completely different way to most modern romance novels. Much like classics such as Jane Eyre and The Well of Loneliness, this contemporary romance follows the protagonists through their childhood years before the main story begins.

In some ways, it resembles One Day by David Nicholls. However, rather than focusing on just one day each year, several chapters are used to cover each school grade to show key developments in the protagonists’ relationship arc.

This provides the reader with snippets of pivotal moments in their lives. It shows how Allie and Kyle’s passage through puberty affected their innocent childhood friendship. I don’t know if Kennedy writes all her novels in this format because this is the first of her works I have read, but it blew me away.

The prose is well-written and engaging. I only noted a few minor errors, such as on page 37 when a word was omitted in the sentence, “As long as you promise not be a crazy boy afterward.” On page 170 there is a typo in the sentence, “I released her rom my teeth.”

I’m not sure if it’s a difference between my British and the author’s American phrasing, but I wouldn’t say, “so I have a substantial savings” (p.314). Also, I’m not in love with the way “off of” is used when “off” would suffice, such as in a sentence like “I had to lift myself off of her” (p.167).

My Opinion

Although this contemporary novel is pitched as a steamy romance, it is more like two books in one. The first half is a YA coming of age romance. The second is a steamy girl next door romance.

Because Burning For You is so original and well-written, I believe it will be one of the books to watch this year. Fans of the boy-next-door trope will love Burning For You, and it easily deserves a rating of five out of five.

Oh dear lord. I’ve been looking forward to this book since I started this series and it really did not disappoint at all. Like seriously I think it’s my fav. I knew Kyle was going to be interesting and fun to read and I was 100% correct.

Kyle being the oldest Hogan brother, has a lot on his plate since their dad died. He’s basically helped raise his little brothers since and he’s always been the serious, broody type, but what happened that made him angry and so serious? Well, Allie did.

This book was really different from the others because most of it is us watching Allie and Kyle grow up through the years. We read their entire back story as being best friends, up until the point where the book started and then we get to follow them as they reconnect.

It was so interesting seeing their friendship grow and develop with their feelings and life in general. We saw a little bit of Dylan when he was with Jenna, we met their dad and got to read a very realistic depiction of 9/11 at all the schools and homes and the after math of it.

I really felt for Allie but I was also frustrated with her. Obviously to us it’s easy to say that she should just tell Kyle and they can go through it together, but I think if I was in her position I would probably do the same thing, maybe not as long though.

Also Kyle was literally perfect and so freaking romantic. Like I just knew he would be and he sure was. Super happy for them and can’t wait to read their short novella.

Little update on everyone else, Dylan and Autumn are expecting their first child! Jesse and Lana are very close to being married, Ryan is about to ask Zoe and Jace and Britt are still happily married!

Next up is Allie and Kyle’s wedding and then Declan’s book!

This book is the fifth in the series Burning for the Bravest series. I have been patiently waiting for Kyle's story. OK, ok I haven't been completely patient but the wait was worth it. I loved Kyle and Allie's story. Trust me it'll hit you hard in the feels. I laugh and cried through the whole book. The author has a way of pulling you in to the story. I could not put this book down. If I could I'd give this book more than five stars. The first part of the book shows you their history and the second part is set in the present can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Kyle and Allie have known each other since they were four years old and she helped him protect his little brother from a playground bully. As they got older Kyle's feelings start to change from that of a friend to something more. They decide their friendship is too important to mess up by dating. Before she leaves Kyle tells her how he really feels, he just can't let her go without telling her he's in love with her and has been for years. Instead of giving them a chance she runs from Kyle's love and refuses to take his calls. Eventually they both move on. Now after leaving sixteen years ago, Allie is home again divorced and needing to be far from her ex. What are the odds she'll run into Kyle? Kyle Sees this as his second chance to get things right with Allie. He's never stopped bring her. Can they make it work this time?

Beautiful story!

I think out of all of the Hogan men stories, Kyle and Allie's story was by far the best I've read. Second chance stories are my favorite. This couple met when they were 4 years old at the playground and had been best friends until she leaves for college. Neither one of them wanted to risk their friendship for more, so they both held back their love for each other until Allie is supposed to go to Michigan for college. The night before she leaves, Kyle tells her he wants more. They end up in bed together and that scares Allie the following day. She takes some time at school to think about them as a couple, but when she ends up in the hospital, all her dreams of them are over.

Sixteen years later, Allie is living in NYC again teaching kindergarten. She runs into Kyle at a liquor shop by her apartment. Knowing that she owes him an explanation for running years ago, fate intervenes and they end up at the same restaurant. When she tells him what happened, how will he take the news?

Kyle never stopped loving Allie. Even when she moved on with someone else, he still loved her. He just wanted her happy. But having her home again, heals the moody fireman and he starts thinking of a future with her in it.

Can this couple get their happy ending?

A must read!!

Burning for You is the fifth book in Kaye Kennedy’s Burning for the Bravest and Ms Kennedy has definitely gone to another level with this fast-paced and gripping story. Kyle’s book has been much anticipated since book one, and as with all the stories in this series the author has made the wait worthwhile. Burning for You is a well-written account of childhood friends who parted to preserve that friendship but have now come back together many years later. The story boasts a cast of exceptionally likeable characters, family values, and in some cases tragedy, gut-wrenching emotions and some seriously hot sexual encounters too. The story isn’t all seriousness and drama, as there is laughter and banter too, but what I truly enjoy most about Ms Kennedy’s books is the real-life scenarios and the attention to detail when explaining a particular event. I loved Kyle in book one and this story only made me adore him more; and who wouldn’t love a man who says his woman’s smile lights up a room? Ms Kennedy has outdone herself and we the readers benefit most!

Here's a preview of Kyle & Allie's love story:

I couldn't get out of my brother's apartment fast enough. Our friend Jace had just surprised us with the news that he'd eloped in Vegas, which was a stark reminder of how single and miserable I was. That's why I'd volunteered to go to the liquor store to get champagne. I desperately needed fresh air and frankly I needed to get away from all the love. I was out the door within seconds and once it closed, I pressed my back against the wall in the hallway and sighed. It seemed everyone was getting their happily ever afters except for me.
The pit in my stomach that had been growing larger ever since my brothers started settling down, made its presence known with a twist. I winced. All of my brothers were happily paired off. Dylan had married Autumn earlier that summer, Jesse and Lana's wedding was in the spring, and I knew it was only a matter of time before Ryan asked Zoe to marry him. Sure, I was happy for my little brothers, but I could only handle so much of the love before it made me want to poke my own eyes out.
I found my limit getting lower and lower every time we were all together. Love was more damn pain than it was worth, and I hoped my brothers would never have to experience that heartache. Their women were cool, and they were all well-matched, but sometimes even being perfect for each other wasn't enough. Love wasn't always enough.
I rode the elevator down from Dylan's and took some much-needed breaths of fresh air once I was out on the sidewalk. I was proud of myself for coming up with an excuse to leave as quickly as I had. After pulling my phone from my pocket, I typed liquor store into my GPS and walked the three blocks to my destination on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
I was half tempted to stop at each bar I passed on the way to get a shot of Irish whiskey, but I resisted the urge. Stumbling back to Dylan's apartment wouldn't be a good look. I told myself that if I still felt like I needed a shot on my walk back, then I'd stop for one. Just one.
The bell jingled when I opened the door to the liquor store and I raised my chin at the guy behind the counter before going in search of the champagne. Foil tops poked out two aisles down, so I made my way over there. As I turned down the row, my eyes caught sight of a familiar head of chocolate-colored hair and my feet froze to the tile.
As involuntarily as my breath, her name slipped out of my mouth, "Allie?"
She glanced up from the Chardonnays and her bronze eyes widened as she turned toward me. The bottle she was holding slipped from her hand and her foot broke its fall, preventing it from shattering. It had to have hurt, but she didn't even flinch. She simply stared at me with her mouth agape as the bottle rolled under the shelf.
My blood drained to my feet as every last feeling I'd had for her since we were four came rushing back like they'd never left. Sixteen years ago. When she did.
I didn't know if I should run away and scream, or run to her and pull her into my arms.
I wanted to do both, so I didn't do either.
We stood in the wine aisle, neither of us making a move beyond staring in silence.
I was ten feet from the one that got away, and the sight of her told me what my heart already knew: she may have gotten away, but I had never let her go.

„Burning for You“ wurde von Kaye Kennedy geschrieben.

Emotional and touching:
Another great addition to the series. I thought the story from when the characters were kids was cute and provided good insight to their characters, although this did constitute 58% of the story.
Kyle and Allie had been best friends since childhood but were reluctant to take it further out of fear of loosing what they had. You could really feel the strong emotional connection that they had. Poor Allie went through a lot during her life and I liked how supportive and loyal Kyle was.
The tone for much of the book was rather sad, however I loved the ending which was really sweet and uplifting. I appreciated that the author brought up the difficult subject of infertility and miscarriages and did so in a sympathetic and honest manner. One thing I have loved about this series is that all of the couple's stories have been unique whilst still maintaining a strong sense of unity with all the family members. It has been wonderful how we get further meaningful interactions with past characters as they contribute to the story and continue on their journeys. I look forward to seeing what comes next!

Allie and Kyle became best friends as kids and grew up together. However just before leave high school things change between them and they become more than friends. They admits they have feelings for each other and end up getting together. Allie worries about what this means for their friendship and takes off for college early. Before she can get herself in a frame of mind to talk to Kyle again she experiences something a young woman her age isn't ready for which has her pulling away from Kyle completely. Kyle tries to move on without Allie but its like he is missing a part of himself. Then years later Allie returns home and runs into Kyle at a store and Kyle wants to reconnect. Can they have a second chance? Will she be able to explain why she bailed on him? Can he forgive her?

This is an amazing story about a second chance that will have you rooting for the main couple. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

We finally find out more about grumpy and stand offish Kyle and it's a bit of heart breaking one and I loved getting to know both he and Allie during the early years and what leads them to part ways. I will be honest I kind a got annoyed at both of them for not peaking up or reaching out sooner although I get Allie not doing so after what happened, but geezus Kylie why did you have to wait until the eleventh hour to finally say how you felt!! There are loads of feels in this book from laughter, happiness, anger, frustration, loss, love and family and has you turning the page to not only see how Allie and Kyle had been growing up but also what will happen when they finally get their second chance. I love all these guys and gals and seeing where they are at with each new book and can not wait for the next one!!!!

Kyle and Allie grew up next door to each other and best friends since they were four years old. Their favorite quiet spot is the swing set in the local park. The first half of the book tells all their main memories and experiences, and what a set of backstories that is. The second half of the book is the current time after a sixteen year break. Now both are back in New York and things sure get shaken up. Twists and turns as they tell their stories of the missing sixteen years and decide whether to start up again or call it quits completely forever. Their romance has sure had a roller coaster effect on them, but their strength and determination have gotten them through to this point. Family, friends and firehouse family sure support the two and do a bit of matchmaking on their own. Loved the ending as well as the bonus epilogue. That family is sure solid and steady.

Holy heat! I fell in love with these characters in Burning for More (Book 1) and I've been chomping at the bit for Kyle's story since the beginning. It did NOT disappoint - it has everything I want in a Kaye Kennedy book and more:

Well-rounded, likeable characters
Realism
Heart-wrenching emotions
Sexy, hot scenes
Family and friends that support each other through it all

Kyle is broody and mysterious - I knew there was a story behind his demeanor and this book helped answer those questions. Allie is described best by Kyle:

"As sweet as can be, she's equally as strong" and "and her smile...she lights up a room"

Keeping it vague as I don't want to give anything away about this book. All the books in Kaye's Burning for the Bravest series are amazing but this book took it to the next level. I highly recommend.

Any one who has been reading this series has probably been waiting for Kyle's story and finally we get it and it was well worth the wait

Kyle and Allie knew one another from childhood they where four when they first met and as they grew older they knew they had feelings for one another but didn't want to destroy their friendship but when Allie was leaving Manhattan Kyle told her how he felt and kissed her she then never wrote or spoke to him again. Now Allie has returned after been divorced and wanting to escape her ex and his new pregnant fiancée The chances of running into Kyle are negligible so she is willing to take the risk They do reconnect though and the connection is still strong and this time Kyle wants to move the friendship to the next level Can they have a future or should they just remain friends You will have to read to see

This was a best friends to lovers, second chance story.

This is the book I have most anticipated in this series and it did not disappoint! I think I used up an entire box of tissue reading this book. It destroyed me in the best way possible. Highly recommend.

Allie Dupree met Kyle Hogan at four years old in the park when she stood up for his little brother who was being bullied. They became best friends, going through growing pains, family tragedies and life. It took sixteen years of being separated, but they finally got their HEA.

A second chance at the love they'd lost sixteen years before.

Ryan had just lost his father, a fire captain, weeks before he and Allie were due to leave for a college in Michigan. He had lived Allie for years, she had lived him as long. They slept together the night before she goes to college and he stayed to help his family. Then both their lives fell apart and it was sixteen years before they spoke again. This is a tear jerker, yet has a happy ending, but they both have to work for it. Warning, deals with miscarriages, high risk pregnancies, and loss.

Kyle and Allie were friends forever. It grew into love and they had a few shining moments before it abruptly ended. No one knows why except Allie and she's not telling. She just leaves everyone behind. Years later she returns sure that she'll never see him again. Then she does. She soon realizes that running didn't kill their love one bit. Maybe explaining why she left will help them both. A good romance.

Kaye has done it again! Such a great book with characters you love and want to know in real life. Parts of it were hard to read because they hit close to home, but I pushed threw and I'm so glad I did. You can tell that Kaye is passionate about what she writes about and writes from experience as a firefighter because she brings those elements of the story to life. I can't wait to read more in the series in the future.

Kaye Kennedy knows how to write! I love this authors work! She has us believing in her story telling and then we fall in love with the characters and for their passion, chemistry they show for each other. We watch the drama unfold and wait for the outcome to be positive. Hell of a read that I think you will love! Very recommend

Please clone these Hogan men!

I have been anxiously waiting to read Kyle and Allie's story. Having met Kyle, oldest of the Hogan brothers, in the first book, I hoped he would also have a HEA! And I am so happy he has in this latest book. All of these fierce, but soft-hearted men need to be cloned. They are all so different, but very intriguing! I will kept following this author's books.

This book was a highlight of the series! The path of the friendship between the H and h was fantastic! It gave the characters such a depth of development. They had true love for each other, and tried so hard to protect the other that they missed their chance at young love. This entire series has been a delight. The four brothers are each interesting individuals, yet together they are a strong and loving family. I highly recommend this book and this series!

This book was fantastic! It really developed the relationship of Kyle and Allie Whilst also bringing in the other members of the Hogan family. Kyle was the member of the family I felt least interested in, however this book really changed my opinion and I was unable to put the book down! This book is brilliant in its own right, however I recommend reading the series from the beginning. I highly recommend this book

Cried and laughed throughout this book

This is now my favorite book in this series, I am so happy for Allie and Kyle!! These two had one hell of a road to get to their hea!! I have been in Allies exact place, it was literally like reading about myself in every aspect from her childhood on, so while reading was enjoyable it brought back sooo many memories!! The way Kaye Kennedy has written this book was fabulous, the emotions from both main characters so real!!!

an interesting read

Usually I don’t like books that have so much backstory but I found myself becoming way too emotional with this one.

It starts with them as kids and goes through every year. Literally half the book is them as kids, and then hits adulthood.

I found it then became very fast paced and rushed, but otherwise a very good read.

Bonus I got this from the bookworms event

Best one yet!

Every time I read a Kaye Kennedy novel, I'm absolutely blown away by how much heat, steam, love, sex, pain, heartache, friendship, teasing, brotherhood, and reality can put into a book. Kyle & Allie's novel was no different, and may very well be my favorite! Be prepared to be utterly knocked on your ass in the absolute best of ways!
