Savannah Vampire #1

The Vampire's Seduction

Rate this book
When it comes to a wild and seductive nightlife, Savannah has bite.

Older than the United States and wealthy beyond his years, playboy William Cuyler Thorne is a vampire with a nice long undead life—one that includes a steady stream of admirers, a consistent supply of rejuvenating blood, and, best of all, a cover as one of Savannah's most prominent pillars of society.

But all good things must end.

Now an ancient enemy has come for William from across the seas. It is his sire, Reedrek, the vampire who created him. And Reedrek will stop at nothing until all that is precious to William—his beautiful mistress, his stable of willing female victims, his glorious estates, and his good-ol'-boy vampire sidekick, Jack—is within his voracious grasp. But William has an arsenal of his own—one that is enhanced by the power of voodoo. And when these two bloodsuckers meet, there will be hell to pay.

Terrific book! It has the perfect dose of suspense, mystery, action and romance... and BTW, just to give immediately an example, the book start with William (one narrator) on a brothel.
sooo GREAT this begin!

The story
How I imagine the process of creation of this book?
simple:

Ingredients:
--> Voodoo magic
--> 2 Vampires
--> A mystical city (Savannah)
--> Suspense
--> Mystery
--> Romance
--> and a reeeeeeeally bad guy

In a blender, place the first four ingredients. Cover and process until smooth. In a bowl, combine the blender pasta with suspense, mystery, and romance; keep stirring. Add the bad guy and mixture; stir some minutes. Serve with a god dose of laughs.

About the characters
The main characters are Willian and Jack. Willian is the ancient vampire that turn Jack, so they relationship is like a piss off dad and the teenager son that do everything to call the attention of the father. It's only a metaphor (obviously)... they were adults (and hot ones seeing the reaction of the womans) when they became vampires.
Only they will tell this story and the intercalate narration chapters will keep your attention. Willian always angry (you will lost account of how many times he will talk about his rage) and serious while Jack is funny and take the life (pardon, undead existence) more lightly. The only thing that make Jack lose his good humor is the "I-keep-you-in-dark-about-vampires-powers" politic that Willian follow. It's soooooo exasperating read Jack need to know more about vampires and obviously himself! But, when you arrive on the last chapter finally everything will be clear, and you will understand William stubbornness.

There are a bunch of secondary characters and my favorite are the twins (male and female) that guard William house. They are old magic creatures, being egyptian dogs during the day and humans during the night. BUT when they are humans they keep some dog behaviors and that crack me up! The best is when the male take a forbidden book to read. What do you think he do after he read it? So easy to guess! He hide the book under the carpet!
Can you imagine Willian finding a book under his carpet?

My dog do the same identical thing! Soooo funny find what he steal genially hidden under the carpet! You doooooooon't find what they hide... nooooooo, impossible!

I could talk hours about this book. Believe me there is a lot to be told, but, I have already annoyed you (long review, sorry). So, my wishes of fun and don't worry, this story is part of a serie, but there is a real end.

PS: don't get this cover... seriously... ok, it's a urban fantasy book, but what the hell? Why put a woman chin and nose? Don't get the significance... nope...

This book was described on Vampire Wire as "early Anne Rice", with more concentration on the plot of evil vampires, not so much on romance. I don't think I would describe it as early Anne Rice, but stuff like that is so subjective. It does have a good dose of sex and tension in it, which is very well done and advances the storyline or develops characters.

The premise: William Cuyler Thorne is an old (circa 1500's) vampire who lives in Savannah, GA. He's got two ancient Egyptian guard dogs who shift into human form during the night, and a voodoo priestess at his beck and call to protect him. He's also got a 'son', or fledgling vampire that he made 140 years ago -- Jack.

Jack was a soldier during the "War of Northern Agression" (that's what some southerners term the American Civil War), and he's a good mix of modern fun compared to William's older, more serious personality. Both men enjoy women, with Jack being a self-described womanizer, and whereas William's tastes are much more refined, Jack is a good ole boy who runs an automotive shop and follows NASCAR religiously.

The setting of Savannah, which reminds me alot of New Orleans, with its eccentric characters, heat, and voodoo, was perfect -- there's a great blend of magic, vampire lore, shapeshifters, along with good old southern charm. The plot in this novel is as follows: William's sire, Redreek, has made the trip from the Old World to Savannah for the purpose of seeking out William, though for what purpose isn't clear -- to destroy him, or convert him to an ally in Redreek's evil cause. William HATES his sire, as Redreek destroyed William's wife and child before making William carry the memory of their deaths for all eternity.

William and Jack make for a good pair -- kinda like the guy-buddy movies you see of the more straight-laced guy with the reckless one. William didn't ask to be made into a vampire, but he doesn't sit around bemoaning that fact, and though Jack is sad about the fact that he'll never have a wife and family, he doesn't sit around whining about it, which is a relief. Redreek is evil and fun in that way, and the only thing I can really say that is a bit of a negative was that I found some inconsistencies in the presentation of the characters -- Redreek loves being an ancient vampire, lording over the human world, though he used some decidedly modern speech patterns and phrases. The same for William, and whereas William started off as describing himself as evil to the core, death on two feet, he's clearly not that as the novel progresses.

In terms of depth and themes, this is more of a plot-driven novel, and there's some very tense scenes when one wonders if Jack will succumb to the dark side. I didn't find it as deep as Interview With the Vampire, with its themes of 'meaning of life and death', though it's not a light, fluffy romance novel, either. The book is told in the first person from the viewpoints of both Jack and William, and I found the contrast in terms of thought patterns and language between the older and younger vampire very funny and well-done. All in all, the novel is a good blend of an entertaining read with some interesting, fun characters in a perfect setting, and I really do recommend it. I'll definitely be getting more books in this series.

Riuscirà a farne buon uso?

This book was an easy read. Not really a romance. There was a bit of voodoo thrown in as well as a bit of a battle between vampires.

This book seemed to start out really slow for me. While I was enjoying the story itself, I just couldn't seem to get invested in the characters in the story, and the way it would switch from Williams point of view to Jack's seemed more of an annoyance. Luckily for me, about halfway through it really picked up. I really started enjoying the characters, the story grew interesting, and I was able to lose myself in the tale.

Jack is a hilariously funny good-ole Georgian boy and he had me cracking up several times throughout this book. By the end I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen, and I loved the surprise ending. All in all, I'm excited to get to the next book. Several of my favorite series have started out with a slow first book and then exploded, and I have high hopes that this one will be the same.

An interesting mix of vampirism and voodoo, set in the south, Savannah GA. The vampires are vampires and have no issues with who they are,(some current books are way too reflective) and have values. There are two main characters, one William is an old European vamp, the other Jack is a Nascar loving southern man. Each has dark shadows form their previous human lives. They are both sexual and lusty and show respect women. Everything seems good for them until William's sadistic sire Reedrek shows up. A voodoo princess and her descendants have pledged their loyalty to William and his line, now can they work together to end Reedrek's plan's ?
For a first novel this was very well done and a real page turner. I am stating the second now, I just couldn't wait... good story telling

Loved this one! And, unlike some of the reviewers who didn't like the switch back & forth between the two main vamps....I thought it was very cool! This book had everything, suspense, humor, romance, and I thought it was really well put together. I enjoyed the voodoo bits, fitted well into the story. This one I would definitely read again, and recommend to anyone into vampires, suspense & sexiness!

In what kind of backwards world do you live in where you legitimately think you can call this book a romance novel? Seriously? Just because people are having sex in a book doesn't mean its a romance.

That aside, lets get down to business.

1) William - an overprotective ninny. Not impressed.
2) Jack- a "playboy who secretly yearns for a serious relationship" type. Not impressed.
3) Elanor and the "swans" - serious sufferers of underdeveloped female character syndrome. Not impressed.
4) Olivia - set up for a sequel.
5) Reedrek - hate that name. Also he seemed more like a hyper 12 year old than an adult vampire that was 100's of years old... That little nursery rhyme thing? Yeah no. Not impressed.
5) Other vampire dudes - they were so forgettable that I actually sat there for a few minutes trying to think of anything else to write before I realized "hey those guys". Not impressed.
6) (edit) OH YEAH THE VOODOO LADY AND THE DOG PEOPLE. So the Voodoo lady and her kid... are like? The vampire's houskeeper? Because they have to? Because their ancestor made a deal???? A totally one sided deal?????? Like WTF????
And the Egyptian Dog People... Who like... Turn into dogs during the day?? But run around naked at night??? And have like... A relationship with the vampires.... That's like... Involving sex???? I mean I think the insinuation is that the vampire guys are having sex with the dog people.... Gross.

So all in all... The next book has a lot of work to do to keep me interested in reading this series.

INCIPIT : Mi chiamo William Cuyler Thorne.

This book was not what I thought it would be like when I first picked up the book. I thought it would be a romance but it was a bit more like an Anne Rice book.

Jack and his sire William live in Savannah. William has an import business (which secretly transports vampires from Europe to America). When one of the imports is killed it doesn’t take William long to work out it was his sire Reedek who was responsible.

The book is pretty cool with vampires, shape shifters and voodoo.

Two weeks, that's how long it took me to get thru this book. It's not like it's not interesting it's just not a page turner. I would pick it up, read 20 pages and then set it down. I liked the setting in Savannah with William and his sire Jack. Jack and his relationship with Officer Connie shows the most potential. I do own all the books in the series but I'm not sure how soon I would pick them up to read.

Set in Savannah I like this vampire world that has voodoo magic with hints of other things. Jack is fun while William is all seriousness but his interactions with Leonora are hot. There is nothing ground breaking about this set up of new world versus old world vampire politics.

I won't rehash the premise of the book because you can read that for yourself either on the back cover or in the synopsis above. I could not get into this book, hence the 1 star.

First, I didn't care for the point-of-view changes. It began with the story jumping between William's perspective and then Jack, then Olivia had to have a say. And the perspective switches happened within chapters, so one chapter could have several different perspectives. Back and forth and back again. I'm not a big fan of perspective changes anyway. I find it's a tricky thing for an author to do, and the way it was done here just didn't work for me. There's a reason many writing courses and writers don't recommend doing this.

Second, I just couldn't get into the characters. Both the main characters, William, the aristocrat, and Jack, the good ole boy, felt flat to me. It was clear that the author was setting up something with William "protecting" Jack by keeping him ignorant, but after 150 years? Usually even with the arrogant characters, I feel something, but even William's seemingly cold arrogance was too emotionless to ignite a response. I couldn't even get irritated at it, as William just felt that flat to me.

Third, the pace of the book was off. A lot seemed happened in the first 100 or so pages of the book as we're introduced to the mains and the villain (William's sire), but then again, a lot was missing. 100 pages in and no idea why William feels such animosity (there was a hint that it was more that just his family) and why he went to such length to prepare for this (voodoo anyone?). I know a bit about what his sire was currently doing (freezing other masters in the Arctic), and there were hints of his extreme cruelty, but no real backstory. Of course, some of that was because we had to switch from William, who told us almost nothing, keeping the reader as ignorant as Jack, to Jack, who knows nothing because William doesn't tell him anything and he's clearly too sire-whipped or stupid to do anything about it.

Finally, I didn't care for the world building, or really lack thereof, which also has to do with the pacing. There were all these world fact droplets, such as why there were very few female vamps, vamp powers, vamp soil, the guard dog/humans, and other world info tidbits. I was more interested than Jack in learning about this stuff, but it came in fragmented bits and pieces. I found no solid world building to even give me a base line idea of what kind of vamp world this is and why we need to be ignorant. It might've been nice if William at least explained to the reader why something was and why it was important to keep Jack ignorant of that fact.

Overall, it was just not enough to keep me interested. I know someone will try to tell me most of the pacing and world building is fleshed out, but I gave it 100 pages. I tried to get to the next chapter and then it was get to the next perspective shift, but I just couldn't force myself to read anymore to get to the point where "all is explained." So, for me, it was a disappointment as I need a new series to read. But clearly this is not the series for me as I won't force myself to slog through book 1.

I’m not a patient person, and I spend a lot of time waiting… doctor’s offices, the DMV, airports… so I keep a book in my purse to keep from going insane. I usually designate some mildly entertaining, but not horribly engaging novel. (It has to be something I can easily put down when my name is called.) The Vampire’s Seduction has been my purse book for the last couple of months. I originally put it there because I assumed form the title that it was going to be a romance. However, I think I was wrong. The Vampire’s Seduction in a sexy book, but not overly romantic. It is told from the POV of two different male vamps who find their beloved city of Savannah under attack by an evil European vamp. I would actually classify this novel as more of an action oriented vamp book than a romance.

First, some things I liked… I liked the relationship between the vamps William and Jack. William is Jack’s sire. He is more of the cliché vamp in that he is rich, suave, powerful, etc. Jack is different. He is loveable and human like. He is an innocent in many ways. And very funny! William love’s Jack’s humanity and works hard to keep him innocent of the darker elements of vampire life. Jack sees this as heavy-handed and oppressive. Throughout the course of the story, William sees his error in keeping Jack ignorant and Jack discovers William’s love. It is a wonderful bromance! I also enjoyed the co-mingling of vampire lore with Savannah voodoo legends. It added an interesting twist.

Some areas where I thought improvement was needed… I was never really convinced of the evil vamp, Reedrek’s motivations. Was it really all about power? If so, yawn. Reedrek himself also didn’t feel scary to me. He was like a composite of all cheesy 1950’s vamp movies and cartoons. I also had some issues with William’s time-bending mind travel. It seemed to come out of nowhere and felt wrong.

Will I continue to read this series? Maybe. I don’t feel a burning need to run out and buy the rest of them, but if I came across the next book in a bargain bin, I would be excited to pick it up.

Overall, I give The Vampire’s Seduction…

Plot – 2 bookmarks
Love Story – 1 bookmark (There was a tiny one between Jack and Connie. I assume that will get explored more in future books.)
Characters – 2 ½ bookmarks. (Loved William & Jack. Loved some of the supporting characters. Thought a huge opportunity got missed with Reedrek.)
Interpretation of Vampire Lore – 3 bookmarks. (Love the incorporation of voodoo, but thought the whole male/female vamp sex thing was stupid.)
Bromance – 4 bookmarks

Suspenseful without being horrific and sexy without being romantic, this debut adds nothing to the growing pile of vampire fiction except the promise of more to come. Vampire William Cuyler Thorne is a 500-year-old socialite living in contemporary Savannah, Ga. Passing himself off as a new family scion each generation since the Revolutionary War, William has acquired substantial wealth, social stature and a co-conspirator in Eleanor, a high-class madam who supplies women to satiate his blood lust.

Despite his savagery and anger issues, William isn't such a bad guy: his victims are all willing, he sponsors charity events, and he's even got a good-ol'-boy buddy, Jack McShane, a former Confederate soldier whom William turned into a bloodsucker. Life is good for the trio until the sadistic Reedrek, William's vampiric sire, shows up to make William pay for centuries of defiance. Luckily, William has his friends and voodoo princess Melaphia on his side—-but can he retain their loyalty when the powerful Reedrek seeks to turn their allegiance? This foray into fangoria is atmospheric and occasionally funny, but surprisingly toothless.

In the scheme of vampire affairs, William is a pussycat compared to others. He is the kind of vampire who only drains willing victims of the shapely female variety--usually to the point of swooning release and a blissful climax. Jack is like no vampire who ever walked the earth before--he's more excited by NASCAR than he is by bats and coffins and moldering mansions. Add Olivia, a smart and sophisticated British female vampire with roots in the decadent Twenties, and you have a hodgepodge of vampire characters.

The plot itself is straightforward, however, the subplots seemed a bit scattered and loose, as if the book was another draft or two shy of really being finished.

This book started off slow but it gradually picked up until it was a running juggernaut of fiction! We start out in a brothel, doing naughty, naughty things and then we switch between different places in Savannah, learning bits and pieces about what it means to be vampiric undead in this series. William, keeper of secrets, wishes to keep his protege and heir in the dark to keep his humanity for as long as possible, but dark forces are afoot and try to foil his long-held secrets from staying secrets any longer. Jack, our keeper of humanity, wants to learn these secrets, frustrated with how he is kept in the dark about his own being. Reedrek, vampire from hell, wants to ruin William's life by any means necessary, already ruining the life he had by killing his family and making William an vampire. Teaching him all it means to be an evil bastard in the making. William fought him, and now Reedrek is out for revenge. Melaphia, William's keeper of voodoo, and her daughter Reenee, and the guardians consist of Williams close knit family. Together this rag tag team try to figure out how to defeat this vampiric evil. Comes out Jack is just a strange vampire, with strange powers that are unprecedented and without William's tutelage could become Reedrek's henchmen in evil. Humanity is the key here, will Jack wish to shed this humanity? Or will he hold on to it with all he is worth?

I loved this book as soon as it began to pick up speed. It was strange at first, all the mystery and cloak and dagger from William, and Jack's confusion and humanity setting the stage for a all out fight. The fight doesn't take place the way I thought it was, I thought it was going to be a downright beat down, not the battle of wills and morality viewpoints against this great evil. I didn't expect how they would deal with the evil either, points that seemed small in the beginning began to grow into something unexpectedly beautiful in the end. I wouldn't call this a work of genius, but it is close with how everything came together.

Vampire William Cuyler Thorne has such loathing for the monster who make him a vampire that he has created only one vampire himself. That vampire is Lucky Jack, a good-ole-boy found dying by William on a Civil War battleground. The only two vampires in Savannah, Georgia, they have a rocky father-son relationship, complete with the baggage that comes with an age difference of three hundred or so years.

Jack runs an all night garage, loves driving fast cars and the company of fast women - who out of necessity usually don't last as long as his cars. Not that he kills them or even drinks their blood. He's not into killing unless someone really deserves it, like a serial killer or child rapist, but it's not easy to keep a girl when he works nights, sleeps during the day and has to stay out of the sun.

William, a wealthy socialite, craves death, but when the threat is real he has no intention of giving up his undead status without a fight. Especially since the threat comes from his creator, a powerful vampire without morals or scruples who killed William's beloved wife and son five hundred years before.

Mind games between powerful vampires, voodoo, shape-shifters, and ghosts flit through this exciting story of evil verses not-so-evil vampires. It's told in first person by both William and Jack, the voice of each vampire strong and clearly defined. The Vampire's Seduction is sure to be the first in a series about the Savannah vampires. Many promising characters were only introduced, and their stories long to be told.

Vampires, the Hollywood stereotype. No reflection, sun equals death, holy water burns, sleeping in coffins....but the way the novel is approached was brilliant. Two Vampires in Savannah, the Sire and his only "offspring." It switches dialog and thought from one vamp to the other in the chapter headings, William and Jack. You must be able to switch between the two to keep up and of course they intermingle and you have to remember who's version you're looking at at the moment. William being a 500 year old European and Jack being a 140 year old southern yankee who is now just a modern Savannah redneck. This was an excellent read! Grit and blood, seduction and passion. Powerful and provocative. Left you with a major cliffhanger as well. One you will want to explore and I will as soon I buy the next one! Completely different and I enjoyed it wonderfully.

Best Quotes from the book:

"Ghosts don't hinder me, I am death wearing seven-hundred-dollar shoes." ---a William thought

"...frequent burst of rage that can nearly blind me. A migrane of the soul,..." ---a William thought

"Instead of the devil being in the details, hell waited for each of us in the wings." ---a William thought

"I was officially in the middle of an undead soap opera. Young Vampires in Love." ---a Jack thought

"I was in a field mined with estrogen bombs and didn't know which way to run." ---a Jack thought

This looks like it's going to be a great series. I love the way it switches from two POVs; William's and Jack's. More than that would be confusing, but two is just right, allowing us a greater range of events and emotions.

William and Jack's creator/child relationship is frustrating. I hate the way William seems to not care that Jack is feeling unwanted and useless, but that leads to their conflicts later in the story. The villain: Reedrek does a great job of trying to tear them apart. His demoniac schemes provide the perfect opposition to William's plans. Though the background of the other male vamps are corny.

The females in the story are varied and, for the most part, interesting. We first see Shari who provides the 'human in need of rescue' at several points in the story until ultimately... well you have to read it. Olivia is a vamps' vamp. She arrives as a vampire orphan with useful information, then later becomes a full member of the team. Eleanor is a very dominate female. William literally has his hands full with her. And Connie is Jack's mysterous love interest that I hope will be developed nicely later on.

The rest of the team are great. I love Melaphia (and her daughter). She stands right up to William, not allowing him to get anything by her. The two Egyptian shapeshifters are facinating and add nice details to the story.

Favorite part: Jack and Olivia searching for William.
