His novel Zero Degree was longlisted for the 2013 edition of Jan Michalski Prize for Literature. Zero Degree was inducted into the prestigious '50 Writers, 50 Books - The Best of Indian Fiction', published by HarperCollins. Vahni Capildeo places Charu Nivedita on par with Vladimir Nabokov, James Joyce and Jean Genet, in her article in the Caribbean Review of Books. He was selected as one among 'Top Ten Indians of the Decade 2001 - 2010' by The Economic Times. He is inspired by Marquis de Sade and Andal. His columns appear in magazines such as Art Review Asia, The Asian Age and Deccan Chronicle.

I neither liked this book nor disliked this book ! my head was swirling like anything when i'm done with thing !
this is my first non - linear & lipogrammatic novel !
why did i read this novel ?
* The legendary writer Sujatha called it ' a piece of shit'.
*Tehelka called it "Style with substance".
*Some called for the book to be banned straight away.
*Wikipedia calls it 'Postmodern lipogrammatic" novel .
*some call it transgressive fiction.
First, remember everything you are told and have believed a novel is, particularly the Indian novel. Some things on the lines of:
->A novel is a work of fiction.
->It contains several common elements such as character, plot, narrative.
->It explores what is loosely called the human condition.
->It may sometimes be an instrument for social change.
->It is a socio-political reflection of its times.
->It entertains, informs, educates, etc.
A literary genre that graphically explores such topics as incest and other aberrant sexual practices, mutilation, the sprouting of sexual organs in various places on the human body, urban violence and violence against women, drug use, and highly dysfunctional family relationships, and that is based on the premise that knowledge is to be found at the edge of experience and that the body is the site for gaining knowledge.
With its mad patchwork of phone sex conversations, nightmarish torture scenes, tender love poems, mythology, and numerology, Charu Nivedita′s novel continues to give shocks to readers !

why did i read this novel ?

July 10, 2012This book is said to be the face of Avant Gardë literature in Tamil. In the preface to the Malayalam translation, the famous writer Zacharia heaps praise on the novel. He says Malayalam writers are all stuck in the Romantic rut while Tamil literature has forged ahead, with a novel like Zero Degree which breaks all conventions.
In that, he is right. Charu Nivedita has thrown off all conventional restraints in the creation of this "anti-novel": a mix of narrative, poetry, doodles and sheer absurdity. It is supposedly written to an unknown woman reader, who may be doing any number of things (including getting raped or giving birth) at the time of its composition. The author says it is gleaned from the notes of the writers Surya, Muniyandi and Mishra: however, he immediately confesses that he has taken a rather broad license with the editing of the same - adding and omitting things at will. He also says his method of translation of Hindi is that of the village idiot Koti Kuppan, who answers all questions with translations of rhyming words from English to Tamil, bearing no relation to the original question.
This most unreliable of narrators then goes on to drown the unsuspecting reader in a mix of pain, death, sex, sadism and defecation. The chapters - many a time not following any syntactic rules or punctuation - are a disjointed mix of crimes against women, scenes of cruel torture, unbelievably monstrous sex (a mythical character from the ninth century moves around with a penis many metres long, looking for a vagina deep enough to receive it!) and people shouting lurid cusswords at one another. Towards the end, some sort of story develops, however. Surya marries a battered woman called Avantika, and the novel is in part her story, written in the form of a letter by Surya to his estranged daughter Genesis.
This is no doubt a very serious work of art lovingly composed by the author; however, I find that I cannot rate it. The story failed to touch me at all. All those descriptions of sex and torture were disturbing at first, but the palate grew jaded very fast as the novel progressed. I do not know whether it is a problem with the translation - maybe the novel would be more powerful in the original Tamil. Or maybe, it was just not written for me: I was in way too deep.
If you like a challenge, do read it. Fortunately, an English translation is available for those who do not know Tamil or Malayalam.

A lipogrammatic novel ? In tamil? written in the 80s? Whoa! Unbelievable right?
One of the most unique and disturbing books you'll ever read . There may b no other book as unique as this in any other language.
It's a transgressive novel and its transgression at its peak ! Zero degrees is way ahead of its time . Even in 2015, it seems too futuristic to be true. Kudos to Charu for his bravery !
The book shatters all the expected codes of decency and morality in the very first page where he describes the different kinds of readers . It has no clear narration . its not even non linear. the story is randomly scattered between the chapters of the book but its oddly engaging!
In a narration that switches between different languages (yeah there's a lot of English,Hindi,etc) , different forms of prose and poetry, different continents, different personalities and whatnot , never once are you bored.
It takes more than bravery to publish such graphic content (that too,in Tamil) in the 80s. What's most disturbing about the most disturbing chapters of zero degrees is that they could easily be true. (like the story of avantika and almost all other women).
Zero degrees explores the darkest spaces of the human mind in a not-so-clear narrative but the writing is on-your-face . It has the most beautiful poetry and the most gruesome tortures , it shows the most lovely forms of affection and most shocking expressions of lust.
Only for the brave-hearted folks who could appreciate this different beast of a literature.

This would be one book I wanted to read for really a long time. There were warnings against it! Still whenever I check out any tamil books, I never failed to check its price or read its prologue. And finally it reached me in its due time.
A minute into the book, I understood that it isn't for me! This book, as claimed to be one of the best transgressive fiction work of tamil sadly didn't work for me. Okay this had happened before. I thought I should give it one more try.
This was my second attempt to read this book. Prepared myself with all admirations it received for its lipogrammatic structure and others! That drove me through first 20 pages of it and again, found it impossible to move further! Now I started hating this book and Charu.
Well, was it because he was stating things that I don't want to hear? Or was it the nature of tone that made me feel like this material isn't for ordinary people like me.
Even though the book is supposed to reach an woman reader who according to the author is doing one of his listed activities, I wasn't sure if there would be anything I could relate to and I just failed to see any reason whatsoever to proceed this book further.
I don't know.. blame it on me for this didn't work! Maybe this is just beyond me and I don't see myself matured enough to read this on and rate.
I just added a new shelf for this one and honestly, I don't want to come across books of this sort in future.

கலைத்து போடப்பட்ட சீட்டுக் கட்டு, வரிசையாய் அடுக்கி பார்த்தால் அழகு, வரிசையாய் அடுக்க முடியவில்லை வெறுமனே கையில் வைத்து விசிறி போல செய்து பார்த்தாலும் அழகு.
இந்நாவல் புரிகிறதா என்று கேட்டால், ஆம்/ இல்லை என கூற முடியவில்லை. ஒரு வேளை எனது வாசிப்பு குறையாக இருக்கலாம்,
ஆனால் ஒன்று நிச்சயம், இந்த மாதிரி நாவல் படிப்பது இதுவே முதல் முறை. சரியாக சொல்ல தெரியவில்லை ஆனால் வித்தியாசமாக இருந்தது,
கட்டாயம் 2/3 வருடங்கள் கழித்து மறுபடியும் வாசித்து விட்டு review அண்ட் rating ஐ திருத்தம் செய்ய வேண்டி வரும்.

I dont know what to write a review about this book. because I dont know what author is trying to say.
I gave 4 stars because I have come to know a new genre called "Transgressive fiction". but still I dont understand the theme behind this F***ng zero degree. its like each page is not linked.

Total crap! Charu talks about everything in this book. Every page the topic jumps between cruelty, sex, sadism, child abuse, machoism, communism, gays, physical torture of captivities... sometime he even talks about big bang and infinity. with the current state of the world I felt like reading bunch of news papers cuts from different places. Yes! there is no sequence in it. It was like a dream sequence. It jumps between incidents. Sometime the character in itself gives interview but which is actually Charu's. Lot of character confusions. Some time I felt like its close to penthouse stories. For sample, there is an interview with a character in the book
Q: why do you hate CUNT? You always beaten it up with your words!
A: I don't hate it. I think the most beautiful delightful and wonderful thing in the world is CUNT. It is egg its aleph it is eye it is divine it is abyss = bottomless chasm deep gorge immeasurable depth abyss of despair primal chaos hiatus its the abyss of my soul it is my magic land.
And in the next page he talks about Big Bang. He is knowledgeable. In one page the character (or himself, who knows) I wanted to become a butterfly collector, but since Nabakov already doing that I decided to become ornithologist. I am sure he was talking about Valdimir Nabakov and his Lolitas. It does not stop there. He is a very good ornithologist who also loves to eat the birds as well. He complains why wouldn't I?
But some time i felt he was also afraid of his words and try to give self explanation through the characters in the book. "If you want to understand by words don't look at my life, If you want to understand my life don't look at my words". At the end another character talks he is more afraid of auto drivers, bus conductors than the cops. How can he write a book which goverment will ban and arrest him?
aah!! its a never ending story.. got to do something useful than reading it. But Charu is Brave and he is real!!

I am sure he was talking about Valdimir Nabakov and his Lolitas. It does not stop there. He is a very good ornithologist who also loves to eat the birds as well. He complains why wouldn't I?
But some time i felt he was also afraid of his words and try to give self explanation through the characters in the book. "If you want to understand by words don't look at my life, If you want to understand my life don't look at my words". At the end another character talks he is more afraid of auto drivers, bus conductors than the cops. How can he write a book which goverment will ban and arrest him?
aah!! its a never ending story.. got to do something useful than reading it. But Charu is Brave and he is real!!

I knew this book was a controversial bestseller (think so), but it seems it was listed among 50 important Indian works of fiction by Harper Collins. In any case, as the epilogue of the novel itself wonders, is it a novel or just a collection of notes, real life experiences, poems, letters, the author's most vulgar thoughts, random musings - all dumped as a book without bothering about structure, character arcs, devoid of even punctuation for the most part, lacking any sort of coherence...you have to say it is the latter. Even in the form it is, i didn't like it much. Celebrating this would be like doing a disservice to people who struggle to put together meaningful works. Maybe it could be listed as a notable avant garde piece of literature. On the plus side, there were some really funny notes and insights here n there. It is totally ok if you miss this book.

August 17, 2024This one really is fun, even if I’m pretty sure I didn’t meaningfully “get” it. The whole thing is, I’m guessing, on a whole other level in Tamil, because when you’re writing in a language that ancient and that ornate (look, I speak fuckin’ Thai and Tamil intimidates me with its Baroque complexity), and when that language is so intimately tied with a single group of people, you can attain a richness of meaning that probably isn’t possible in standard, commercial-grade international English. But even if I don’t get it on that level, I really enjoyed it, thoroughly, with all the twists and turns along the way.

fragmented tamil novel that is apparently an oulipo inspired lipogram, although the constraint seems fairly specific to tamil as per the introduction: "in keeping with the numerological theme of Zero Degree, the only numbers expressed in either words or symbols are numerologically equivalent to nine (with the exception of two chapters). This Oulipian ban includes the very common Tamil word å¼, one, used very much like the English one (“one day”, “one of them”, etc.)". i didn't really notice this at any point through the book so i'm not sure if the translators haven't bothered to try and render it in english. in the original there are also apparently sections without any punctuation except for full stops or with no punctuation at all, evoking classical tamil texts, but the translators have again chosen to mostly not replicate this in english, which is fairly disappointing. what we're left with after these dubious translation decisions is a novel in bits and pieces, from many different narrators and perspectives, but with a consistent theme of brutal violence and sex, often with a focus on state violence and violence against women. there are also a number of literary references and namedrops in the best post modernist tradition, and a certain amount of the author making fun of himself. i wasn't really struck particularly by the prose style or writing at any point though, perhaps because of the choices made by the translators, so what we're left with comes across like a vaguely interesting but mostly failed experiment. i'm interested to know if any of Nivedita's other books might come across better in english than this one

"ஷேக்ஸ்பியரின் மின்னஞ்சல் முகவரி" புத்தகம் தான் சாருவின் படைப்புகளில், நான் முதலில் படித்தது. எனக்கு பெரிய ஈர்ப்போ பிடிமானமோ அதில் கிடைக்கவில்லை.
பின் ஒரு இராவில், திடிரென ஸீரோ டிகிரி எடுத்து வாசிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். கீழேயே வைக்கவில்லை; விறுவிறுவென்று வாசித்துவிட்டேன். கடைசியாக வருகிற கவிதைகள், வேறொரு சாருவை காட்டியது. Satirical என்று சொல்வோமே, அதை அத்தனை இலேசில் செய்து கடந்திருக்கிறார். திடீரென "ஆம் இல்லை" போன்றதொரு படிவம் வருவதெல்லாம் நான் இதற்கு முன் பார்த்திராத ஒரு புதிய அனுபவம்.
நான் ஏன் இத்தனை வேகமாக படித்தேன், என்ன சொல்கிறது புத்தகம், என்ன புரிந்தது எனக்கு என்று யோசித்தால் தான் குழப்பம் வருகிறது எனக்கு. ஒவ்வொரு அத்தியாயங்களும் தனித்தனியாக அழகாக கையாளப்பட்டு, சுவாரசியமாக இருந்தது. ஆனால், மொத்தமாக சேர்த்து நாவலாக பார்ப்பதில் தான் தடுமாறுகிறேன். 'இது நாவலா இல்லை அதற்கான குறிப்புக்களா" என்று புத்தகத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்; ஆனாலும் குழப்பம் போகவில்லை எனக்கு.

ஜீரோ டிகிரி என்பது மிகவும் வேறுபட்டதொரு வாசிப்பு அனுபவத்தை வழங்கும் நூல். தொடக்கம் முதல் முடிவுவரை, இது சிக்கலான, குழப்பமூட்டும், மற்றும் பலபட்ட உணர்வுகளை கிளப்பக்கூடிய எழுத்து நடை கொண்டது. நூலின் பல பகுதிகளில் துன்பச் சுவை தெளிவாக இழையோடும்; பாலியல் சார்ந்த விவரணைகள் பெரிதளவில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன.

Not a typical novel. Not even a typical "non-typical" novel. I like some part of it. I also don't like some part of it. I even hate some parts. Some parts are simply confusing (or look like unwanted or disconnected portions). I think that's the reaction the author wants from the readers. Life of Avanthika and the father-daughter realationship are the good parts, maybe the best parts (at least for me). Maybe a great attempt from the literary side, but definitely not for the readers like me. Contains some erotic parts too. A nice read if you want a break from stereotypical novels.

This book is definitely not for everyone, definitely not for the faint-of-heart and most definitely not for young or sensitive readers.
It is extremely rare to come across readily available English translations of Avant-Garde Tamil writing so I have been raring to read this book for a while. I had searched for this book on both Amazon India as well as Flipkart but finally found a copy at my neighborhood book store (God bless independent book stores and may they live forever).
This book is very difficult to read. Some chapters are extremely obscure, making references to long-dead European existentialists while others are graphic in their portrayal of sexual, physical and psychological violence. This book is definitely written in a way to provoke mainstream "polite" Tamil society and is as far away from what is considered "acceptable" literature as one can imagine.
But that is the whole point!
There is a lot of value in this book, especially for a reader who wants to explore the limits of literary fiction. Avant-Garde books or transgressive fiction isn't supposed to be approachable but reading a book like this proves a good mental challenge for the reader to test their own biases/views/limits of reading ability.
I do not want to say much about the story per se (because there really isn't any coherent plot) but one particular chapter (Avantika's Letter to Surya) is very readable and heart-wrenching.
This book might leave you depressed/distressed/disappointed/disgusted or plain confused. It made me feel a mixture of those emotions for sure. And any book that makes me feel anything other than boredom, to me, is worth reading.
PS: This is the first ever book I have read where one character chastises another by calling him a "Mudevi" (left untranslated but defined in the appendix). That by itself left me chuckling.

நாவல் என்றால் என்ன? அது எப்படி இருக்க வேண்டும்? அது நமக்குள் என்னென்ன உணர்வுகளை ஏற்படுத்த வேண்டும்? எது இலக்கியம் ஆகிறது? இலக்கியப்படைப்பாக ஒரு புதினத்தை கருதுவோமாயின் அதன் தன்மைகள் என்ன? குணங்கள் என்ன? வரம்புகள் என்ன? வரையறைகள் என்ன? கருத்துகள் என்ன? கோட்பாடுகள் என்ன? இப்படிப் பல கேள்விகளுக்கு நம்மால் பதில் அளிக்க முடியும். ஆனால் அப்பதிலும் ஒரு கருத்தாகவே இருக்கக் கடவது. தேர்ந்த எழுத்தாளர்களும், இலக்கியவாதிகளும் சொல்லும் பதில்கள் பெரும்பாலும் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளப் பட்டாலும் அது வாசிபனுபவத்தை திரிக்க வல்லது. தூய்மையான வாசிப்பு என்பது, எவ்வித முகப்பொ முன்னறிமுகமோ இல்லாமல் வாசிக்கும் போது எழுவதே ஆகும். அத்தகைய வாசிப்பினால் ஏற்படும் பாதிப்பும் சஞ்சலங்களும் அளப்பரியது. ஸீரோ டிகிரி அதற்கு ஒரு மிகச்சிறந்த உதாரணம். ஒரு சராசரி நாவலுக்கு உண்டான கட்டமைப்பையும் மொழிபையும் தகர்த்தெறியும் படைப்பே சாரு நிவேதிதாவின் ஸீரோ டிகிரி.
ஒரு இடியாப்ப குழப்பத்தோடுதான் தொடங்குகிறது. நாவலை எழுதியவரும், அந்த கையெழுத்து பிரதியை திருத்துபவரும், திருத்தியதை சரிபார்க்க திருத்துபவரும் கதை சொல்லிகளாக உருக்கொண்டு தத்தம் கருத்துகளையும், கேள்விகளையும் ஆங்காங்கே செருகிவிட்டு கழண்டு கொள்கிறார்கள். அது மட்டும் அல்லாது கையெழுத்துப் பிரதி பிரசுரிக்கப்பட்ட போது பக்கங்கள் ஏடாகூடமாக கலக்கப்பட்டதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. கதை சொல்லியின்மேல் நாம் பொதுவாக கொள்ளும் நம்பகத்தன்மையை உடைத்தெவறிதற்கே இத்தகைய முன்னறிவிப்புகள் பயன்படுகின்றன. பின் நவீனத்துவத்தின் முக்கிய கோட்பாடான "எழுத்தாளனின் இறப்பு" (Author is Dead) இங்கே நிர்வாணப் படுத்தப்படுகிறது.
நாவலின் பெரும்பாலான பகுதிகள், அது அமைந்த விதம் கொண்டும், அதிலிருக்கும் மொழி நடையின் மூலமும் நம்மை வெகுவாக ஈர்க்கிறது. ஆரம்பப் பக்கங்களில் வரும் "இந்த நாவலை படித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது நீ ..." என்று தொடங்கும் பந்தியாகட்டும், "இந்த நாவலை பற்றி என்ன நினைக்கிறாய்" என்ற பின்னூட்ட வினாக்களாகட்டும், ஆண்மை குறைக்கு குள்ளச் சித்தன் தரும் நிவாரணங்களை எடுத்துச் சொல்லும் இடங்களாகட்டும், "பாரடா பரதேசி, இது நீ இதுவரை வாசித்த கச்சடா கதை அல்ல" என்று (மிக உரக்க) சொல்லி சொல்கிறது. நம் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்க சத்தம்தான் சில நேரங்களில் உதவுகிறது.
கதையின் நாயகன் (இல்லை முக்கிய ஆண் கதாப்பாத்திரம் என்று வைத்துக்கொள்வோம், பின் நவீனத்துவத்தில் கதையே இல்லாத போது நாயகன் எங்கே) சமுதாயத்தின்பால் வெறுப்பு கொண்டுள்ள தன்மை பெற்ற Sociopath. தன் ஆணுறையின் முன் பகுதியை வெட்டி தான் புணரும் திருமணமான பெண்ணை கருவுறச் செய்வது, கடற்கரையில் ஒரு பெண்ணுடன் சல்லாபித்துவிட்டு அவளை கொல்வது, பரிச்சயம் இல்லாத பெண்களை விளித்து ஆபாச உரையாடல்கள் நிகழ்த்துவது என்பது போன்ற இடங்கள் நம் அக மரபுகளையும், புனிதங்களையும் சோதிக்கிறது. சோதிக்கிறது என்றால் ஹிட்லர் யூதர்களை சோதித்தது போல. இதையும் தாண்டி "120 days of sodom" என்ற படைப்பின் நகலாக (கிட்டத் தட்ட) வரும் இடங்கள் அருவருப்பு என்ற உணர்வையே கேள்விக்குறியாக்குகிறது. இதை அவர் முன்னுரையில் குறிப்பிட்டாலும் இது வரை அத்தகைய படைப்புலக பரிச்சயம் இல்லாதோருக்கு அவ்விடம் அதிர்ச்சி அளிக்ககூடும்.
மேற்கூறிய எல்லா விஷயங்களுமே நாவலின் வலிமையையும், வித்தியாசத்தையும் எடுத்துரைத்தாலும், அந்த வலிமை தன்னை தானே அழுத்தி சுருங்கி வீழ்சியாகிறது. முக்கியமாக அவந்திகாவின் பகுதி. அதை ஒரு வருத்தத்தின் ஆபாசக் கூற்றாக மட்டுமே பார்க்க முடிகிறது. களம் அமைந்த விதத்தின் படி அவள் மேல் நாம் கொள்ளும் வருத்தம் மிதமிஞ்சியதாகவே இருக்க வேண்டும். அது நாயகனை வீழ்த்தும் ஒரு உக்தி. அவன் இதுவரை செய்த எல்லா செயல்களுக்கும் அவன் உயிரை உலுக்கும் எதிர்வினையாகதான் அவந்திகா இருக்கிறாள். ஆனால் இதை மேம்போக்காக சொல்லாமல் "அழுகிறாயா ... இரு ... உன் கண்களைக்கிள்ளி, நாசியை அறுத்து, வாயை கிழித்து, ரத்தத்தை உறிஞ்சி ... இத்யாதி இத்யாதி" என்று நம்மை பிழிந்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறார் சாரு. "நம்மைச் சுற்றி நடக்காததை நான் கூறவில்லை" என்று அவர் கூறினாலும், நடந்ததை அப்படியே கூறுவதில் எங்கே ஆளுமையும் நுண்ணுணர்வும் இருக்கிறது என்ற கேள்வி நம்முள் எழுகிறது. காரண காரியங்களைத் தாண்டி ஒரு கதாப்பாத்திரத்தை சித்தரிப்பதில் பின் நவீனத்துவம் அழிகிறதா என்றும் கேட்க தோன்றுகிறது.
சாரு என்ற எழுத்தாளரின் அறிமுகத்தோடு நாம் அவர் புத்தகங்களை வாசித்தோமேயானால் பின் நவீனத்துவம் என்ற பிம்பம் மட்டுமே நமக்கு தெரிகிறது. பின் நவீனத்துவ கோட்பாடுகளைக் கொண்டு சமைத்த இப்படைப்பில் கோட்பாடுகள் தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக தெரிந்தாலும் அது ஒன்றோடொன்று சேர மறுக்கிறது. இதற்கு பெரும்பாலும் சாருவே காரணம் என்று தோன்றுகிறது. பின் நவீனத்துவ கையேடுகளில் இருக்கும் எல்லா புள்ளியையும் ஒன்று சேற்பதாகவே அவர் எழுத்து அமைந்திருக்கிறது. நாவல் என்ற தளத்தைத் தாண்டி ஒரு ஆசிரியன் மாணவனுக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாக கூற எழுதப்பட்ட படைப்பு போலவே தோற்றம் அளிக்கிறது. ஆனால் அது இலக்கியமா என்ற சந்தேகம் மீண்டும் எழுகிறது.
ஸீரோ டிகிரியின் தனிச் சிறப்பு - இது அமைக்கப்பட்ட விதத்தாலும், இதனுள் மேற்கோளிட்டு காட்டப்படும் உலக இலக்கிய படைப்புகளின் வாயிலாகவும், சாரு ஒரு மிகப் பெரிய நிழல் பிம்பத்தை உருவாக்கி தன்னை ஒரு ஆளுமையாக நிறுவுகிறார். தமிழ் நாவல்கள் என்றால் பத்தாம் பசிலித்தனமான படைப்புகளும், கிராமச் சூழலில் உம்முணா மூஞ்சியாகத் திரியும் பெண்களின் கதையும், அக்ரஹாரத்தில் இருக்கும் மாமிகளின் அஜால் குஜால் மரபு மீறல்கள் மட்டுமே என்று இன்றும் நினைக்கும் பலருக்கு ஸீரோ டிகிரி என்பதுதான் சரியான பதில். தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் இதை விட ஆகச் சிறந்த படைப்புகள் இருப்பினும், தன் வித்தியாசமான அமைப்பாலும், சுவாரசியமான நடையாலும் உலக இலக்கிய மேடையில் பிரதிநிதித்துவம் பெறக்கூடிய ஒரு சிறந்த படைப்பாக ஸீரோ டிகிரி நிச்சயம் இருக்கும்.

ஒரு இடியாப்ப குழப்பத்தோடுதான் தொடங்குகிறது. நாவலை எழுதியவரும், அந்த கையெழுத்து பிரதியை திருத்துபவரும், திருத்தியதை சரிபார்க்க திருத்துபவரும் கதை சொல்லிகளாக உருக்கொண்டு தத்தம் கருத்துகளையும், கேள்விகளையும் ஆங்காங்கே செருகிவிட்டு கழண்டு கொள்கிறார்கள். அது மட்டும் அல்லாது கையெழுத்துப் பிரதி பிரசுரிக்கப்பட்ட போது பக்கங்கள் ஏடாகூடமாக கலக்கப்பட்டதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. கதை சொல்லியின்மேல் நாம் பொதுவாக கொள்ளும் நம்பகத்தன்மையை உடைத்தெவறிதற்கே இத்தகைய முன்னறிவிப்புகள் பயன்படுகின்றன. பின் நவீனத்துவத்தின் முக்கிய கோட்பாடான "எழுத்தாளனின் இறப்பு" (Author is Dead) இங்கே நிர்வாணப் படுத்தப்படுகிறது.
நாவலின் பெரும்பாலான பகுதிகள், அது அமைந்த விதம் கொண்டும், அதிலிருக்கும் மொழி நடையின் மூலமும் நம்மை வெகுவாக ஈர்க்கிறது. ஆரம்பப் பக்கங்களில் வரும் "இந்த நாவலை படித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது நீ ..." என்று தொடங்கும் பந்தியாகட்டும், "இந்த நாவலை பற்றி என்ன நினைக்கிறாய்" என்ற பின்னூட்ட வினாக்களாகட்டும், ஆண்மை குறைக்கு குள்ளச் சித்தன் தரும் நிவாரணங்களை எடுத்துச் சொல்லும் இடங்களாகட்டும், "பாரடா பரதேசி, இது நீ இதுவரை வாசித்த கச்சடா கதை அல்ல" என்று (மிக உரக்க) சொல்லி சொல்கிறது. நம் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்க சத்தம்தான் சில நேரங்களில் உதவுகிறது.
கதையின் நாயகன் (இல்லை முக்கிய ஆண் கதாப்பாத்திரம் என்று வைத்துக்கொள்வோம், பின் நவீனத்துவத்தில் கதையே இல்லாத போது நாயகன் எங்கே) சமுதாயத்தின்பால் வெறுப்பு கொண்டுள்ள தன்மை பெற்ற Sociopath. தன் ஆணுறையின் முன் பகுதியை வெட்டி தான் புணரும் திருமணமான பெண்ணை கருவுறச் செய்வது, கடற்கரையில் ஒரு பெண்ணுடன் சல்லாபித்துவிட்டு அவளை கொல்வது, பரிச்சயம் இல்லாத பெண்களை விளித்து ஆபாச உரையாடல்கள் நிகழ்த்துவது என்பது போன்ற இடங்கள் நம் அக மரபுகளையும், புனிதங்களையும் சோதிக்கிறது. சோதிக்கிறது என்றால் ஹிட்லர் யூதர்களை சோதித்தது போல. இதையும் தாண்டி "120 days of sodom" என்ற படைப்பின் நகலாக (கிட்டத் தட்ட) வரும் இடங்கள் அருவருப்பு என்ற உணர்வையே கேள்விக்குறியாக்குகிறது. இதை அவர் முன்னுரையில் குறிப்பிட்டாலும் இது வரை அத்தகைய படைப்புலக பரிச்சயம் இல்லாதோருக்கு அவ்விடம் அதிர்ச்சி அளிக்ககூடும்.
மேற்கூறிய எல்லா விஷயங்களுமே நாவலின் வலிமையையும், வித்தியாசத்தையும் எடுத்துரைத்தாலும், அந்த வலிமை தன்னை தானே அழுத்தி சுருங்கி வீழ்சியாகிறது. முக்கியமாக அவந்திகாவின் பகுதி. அதை ஒரு வருத்தத்தின் ஆபாசக் கூற்றாக மட்டுமே பார்க்க முடிகிறது. களம் அமைந்த விதத்தின் படி அவள் மேல் நாம் கொள்ளும் வருத்தம் மிதமிஞ்சியதாகவே இருக்க வேண்டும். அது நாயகனை வீழ்த்தும் ஒரு உக்தி. அவன் இதுவரை செய்த எல்லா செயல்களுக்கும் அவன் உயிரை உலுக்கும் எதிர்வினையாகதான் அவந்திகா இருக்கிறாள். ஆனால் இதை மேம்போக்காக சொல்லாமல் "அழுகிறாயா ... இரு ... உன் கண்களைக்கிள்ளி, நாசியை அறுத்து, வாயை கிழித்து, ரத்தத்தை உறிஞ்சி ... இத்யாதி இத்யாதி" என்று நம்மை பிழிந்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறார் சாரு. "நம்மைச் சுற்றி நடக்காததை நான் கூறவில்லை" என்று அவர் கூறினாலும், நடந்ததை அப்படியே கூறுவதில் எங்கே ஆளுமையும் நுண்ணுணர்வும் இருக்கிறது என்ற கேள்வி நம்முள் எழுகிறது. காரண காரியங்களைத் தாண்டி ஒரு கதாப்பாத்திரத்தை சித்தரிப்பதில் பின் நவீனத்துவம் அழிகிறதா என்றும் கேட்க தோன்றுகிறது.
சாரு என்ற எழுத்தாளரின் அறிமுகத்தோடு நாம் அவர் புத்தகங்களை வாசித்தோமேயானால் பின் நவீனத்துவம் என்ற பிம்பம் மட்டுமே நமக்கு தெரிகிறது. பின் நவீனத்துவ கோட்பாடுகளைக் கொண்டு சமைத்த இப்படைப்பில் கோட்பாடுகள் தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக தெரிந்தாலும் அது ஒன்றோடொன்று சேர மறுக்கிறது. இதற்கு பெரும்பாலும் சாருவே காரணம் என்று தோன்றுகிறது. பின் நவீனத்துவ கையேடுகளில் இருக்கும் எல்லா புள்ளியையும் ஒன்று சேற்பதாகவே அவர் எழுத்து அமைந்திருக்கிறது. நாவல் என்ற தளத்தைத் தாண்டி ஒரு ஆசிரியன் மாணவனுக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாக கூற எழுதப்பட்ட படைப்பு போலவே தோற்றம் அளிக்கிறது. ஆனால் அது இலக்கியமா என்ற சந்தேகம் மீண்டும் எழுகிறது.
ஸீரோ டிகிரியின் தனிச் சிறப்பு - இது அமைக்கப்பட்ட விதத்தாலும், இதனுள் மேற்கோளிட்டு காட்டப்படும் உலக இலக்கிய படைப்புகளின் வாயிலாகவும், சாரு ஒரு மிகப் பெரிய நிழல் பிம்பத்தை உருவாக்கி தன்னை ஒரு ஆளுமையாக நிறுவுகிறார். தமிழ் நாவல்கள் என்றால் பத்தாம் பசிலித்தனமான படைப்புகளும், கிராமச் சூழலில் உம்முணா மூஞ்சியாகத் திரியும் பெண்களின் கதையும், அக்ரஹாரத்தில் இருக்கும் மாமிகளின் அஜால் குஜால் மரபு மீறல்கள் மட்டுமே என்று இன்றும் நினைக்கும் பலருக்கு ஸீரோ டிகிரி என்பதுதான் சரியான பதில். தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் இதை விட ஆகச் சிறந்த படைப்புகள் இருப்பினும், தன் வித்தியாசமான அமைப்பாலும், சுவாரசியமான நடையாலும் உலக இலக்கிய மேடையில் பிரதிநிதித்துவம் பெறக்கூடிய ஒரு சிறந்த படைப்பாக ஸீரோ டிகிரி நிச்சயம் இருக்கும்.

Call it a non-linear, lipogrammatic, transgressive, metafiction and what other fancy terms that you choose to describe this nonsense. For me, this is certainly the most absurd piece of trash that I have ever come across. There is not a single chapter that is written with a purpose or any literary value whatsoever and fills with author's sheer motivation of expressing his carnal longings from every angle. Everything in nature is beautiful including sex and lust but this is beyond any boundaries and perhaps that's where that non-linearity plays its role as far as I could justify. I doubt whether he can even write his favourite topic "sex" in a tasteful manner. A total BS!

The most craziest novel I have read till date. Felt - irritated, shocked, surprised, disgusted, sympathetic and bored. This is no easy novel and definitely not for those who can get offended by strong content of violence and sex. Never thought a novel could be this way and the most interesting read was Avanthika's episode in the novel. "Zero Degree" definitely needs a second read.

சூர்யா தன்னுடைய மகள் ஜெனிசிஸ்கு எழுதுற கடிதங்கள் தான் இந்த நாவல். சூர்யா தன்னுடைய நண்பன் முனியாண்டி பத்தி எழுதுற புத்தகத்துக்காக எடுத்த குறிப்புகளை முன்னுக்குப் பின் அடுக்கி அதை அப்படியே நமக்குப் படிக்க குடுத்து இருக்காரு ஆசிரியர்.
First half எனக்கு சுத்தமா புரியல. Second half worked for me. இது ஒரு non-linear story so எந்த chapter எடுத்து படிச்சாலும் புரியுற மாதிரி இருந்துச்சு ஆனா overall கதை புரியல. நடிகைகளின் பேட்டிகள், லத்தின் - அமெரிக்க மேதைகளின் பெயர்கள், வதை முகாம்களின் கொடுமைகள், ஆர்த்தி மற்றும் அவந்திகாவின் சோகம் நிறைந்த கதை, அப்பா - மகள் பாசத்தின் வெளிப்பாடாக கவிதைகள், phone - sex conversationsனு இப்படி எந்த ஒரு வரையறைக்குள்ளவும் கொண்டு வர முடியாத ஒரு கதைக்களம்.
1998லயே இந்தப் புத்தகம் வெளிய வந்து இருக்குன்றதே எனக்கு முதல் ஆச்சர்யமான விஷயம். இன்னொரு ஆச்சர்யம் Transgressive writers in Indiaனு search பண்ணதும் சாரு நிவேதிதா அவர்களோட பெயர் வந்தது.

Zero Degree by Charu Nivedita is a novel that delves into the intricacies of human identity, sexuality, and power dynamics through the eyes of the protagonist, an emotionally unstable individual who is grappling with his own desires and beliefs. I would describe the author's writing style as Kafkaesque and reminiscent of the works of Kurt Vonnegut and Sadegh Hedayat's "The Blind Owl," but falls short in its execution. The author's writing is poetic and visceral but also verbose, convoluted, and pretentious, rendering it challenging for the reader to fully engage with the narrative. The novel encompasses taboos such as incest, rape, and child abuse, but it is employed for shock value, rather than for an insightful exploration. The writing is both poetically evocative and visceral, but it becomes overwhelming and hard to follow. The novel reflects the complexities and ugliness of the world we inhabit.

I don't know what rating has to be given. I just close my eyes and touched and it was at the middle. The thing is I don't what had happened in this book. One day I was reading continuously and forget to eat or sleep. My friend asked me what I was doing at middle of the night. Then I came to reality. There are many characters. I didn't relate them at all. I was not able to understand the relation. But each character has a story. I was trying to understand the reality in each characters' story. I didn't even know it is a story or reality. At initial I can't relate anything and was not understanding. Later understood that it is something that is happening around me. It was neither good nor bad. I'm neutral here.

It sure is experimental. It felt like watching TV when someone else is channel surfing. Some times you get to see long sequences to make sense out of it, but there are also moments when the image flashes right past your mind as in a subliminal message.
A recurring theme is the violence against women in the society. Almost all the female characters in this novel are victims of some form of societal injustice. Some readers might be repelled by some passages/chapters, but those things do happen in our society. An there are also passages that seems to be pure gibberish.
All things considered, this is a great novel. Its a mishmash sample of the society which on careful introspection could reveal a great deal.

I didn't expect to like this book. It started soooo badly for me.. A little too vulgar, a little too disjointed and a little too ummm..not my type... Having then set the bar real low, having struggled through the first few chapters..it started to pull me in. I started to like it...I think Charu writes better for the lady reader than for the male. The portions about Avanthika, Genny, the ex wife, the harem women were so good even if disheartening in terms of their suffering. The poetry in the end was gorgeous... and I loved the bit about Shakti ...

One very different book, which goes deep into cruelity and sexuality so much that we will feel uncomfortable to even read them. For a person who would like to imagine what is being read, this book was a challenge. Understanding the book at first place and the flow of the story being non linear, not tying up some where around the plot was difficult to digest. With this being called modern novel, it didnt look like a novel for me.
I could not understand why it was not seggragated into chapters and be treated as a short story or kuru novel. May be I am in that old world and not able to understand the new nuiances. But still for the boldness and being true, explaning it with such words that it impacts the reader in the most deep way is something that charu sir seems to be a master at. No empathy and no sympathy in human behaviour seems to be the core crux of the book.
Go for it if you want to read some thing drastically different. Though the book made me read till end, the enjoyment in reading the book was less.

Can't imagine how an author could write a whole book without using 'oru' in tamil. Even though the content was obnoxious in many places it's mind blowing in some chapters. The kavithai gal in the end is wonderful. It gives a mixed feelings when you finish this book.

Like a firefly enchanted by a lightbulb, I was enchanted by Zero Degree, written by Charu Nivedita. From the first page to the last, I was drawn to it. The reading experience is unlike anything I have experienced before. One of the best transgressive literature books I have read.
