It was something they had never noticed before and they weren’t even sure what all it was. There had been a new human house built just outside the forest and the friends wondered what lies behind the fence hiding most of the backyard. Sweet Story, But...

This author writes sweet stories about forest animal friends, as the title suggests, and their adventures. Unfortunately, I have found the books to have several problems. One is that the author can't seem to stick to a tense; she alternates between past and present when there is no need whatsoever to do so. Everything is happening in the current moment, for the most part. Books need to be consistent with tense, especially those for young children. I'm not wild about the simple, somewhat crude drawings, either This book could either be read to a younger child or read by an early reader. Unfortunately, I think comprehension may sometimes be problematic because of the way the author writes dialogue. In paragraphs, dialogue is supposed to be written in a certain way: one speaker, one action or thought (perhaps), one dialogue tag (perhaps), and one concept that is being spoken of. The author violates this dialogue rule repeatedly, often having two characters speak in one paragraph of dialogue as well as including actions by more than one character. This could make it difficult for the early reader to put the correct action or dialogue tag with a particular piece of dialogue. Also, it makes for longer paragraphs, which could be harder to read. The eye loves white space. Because of both these issues, I do not feel like I can recommend this book as either a read-aloud one or one for early readers.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
