Bah humbug! Who says the classics are just for adults? Join Ebenezer Scrooge on his ghostly Christmas adventure, or follow orphaned Oliver Twist from rags to riches in some of literature's most famous tales from the foggy streets of Victorian London.
Adapted and illustrated for children aged 7+. This 10-book box set includes A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, The Old Curiosity Shop, Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickleby, Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, Bleak House and Little Dorrit.
Philip Gooden lives in Bath. In addition to his Nick Revill series, Sleep of Death, he is the author of The Guinness Guide to Better English and the editor of The Mammoth Book of Literary Anecdotes. Each of his Nick Revill mysteries revolves around a Shakespearean play mirroring life - in Sleep of Death the play was Hamlet, in this offering it is Troilus and Cressida. AKA Philippa Morgan.
Philip Gooden does a fantastic job in summarizing the main points of Dicken’s (sometimes long and tedious) plots. And the illustrations are so fun and quirky!! These helped my understand the ending of Little Dorrit (one of those WHAT JUST HAPPENED endings and WHO is connected to WHO?) Gooden had his job cut out for him on that one. ( Not to knock Little Dorrit at all - it’s one of my FAVS!!)
Gooden’s work reminded me how GOOD Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations was while refreshing my memory for the plots of David Copperfield and Hard Times.
This would be maybe a 4th grade reading level. If you’re looking for a child’s edition with a higher reading level, the Illustrated Classics Editions would be your next best bet.
If you want a really quick overview of the book or are trying to introduce young readers to dickens, these will do the trick. But they aren’t very true to the original stories, and have been given happier endings to make them more enjoyable for kids.
