Playing with the Doctor

Rate this book
It’s nothing but a casual hookup. Temporary, with no strings attached. It’ll be over in a few weeks, and we’ll go our separate ways. What could go wrong?

Jessa
Have you ever wished you could turn back time and do things differently? Like that one time you decided to use your ratty bra as a weapon and almost took out the eye of your dad’s hot doctor? Yeah? Me, too.

But my nylon ninja skills must’ve impressed him, because he kept coming around, heating my blood with those tight jeans and sexy smiles.

As hard as I tried, I couldn’t resist him. So I decided to make a deal. A few weeks of fun, then we’d go our separate ways.

Rafe
My life was perfect—just the way I wanted it. Or at least it was until the day I met Jessa Maddox.
Beautiful and feisty, I couldn’t get her out of my head, and I kept making excuses just to be near her.

When neither of us could deny our attraction for another moment, we made a bargain.

No strings. No commitments. Just a cool and casual fling that would run its course before Jessa headed back home and out of my life, for good.

It was the perfect situation…until it wasn’t.

And I needed to figure out what I really wanted, because Jessa Maddox was no “here today, gone tomorrow” hookup.

She was just what the doctor ordered.

Playing with the Doctor is book one in the Milestone Mischief Series. It is a hot standalone novel with no cliffhanger.

This book felt very real. I felt like I was the main character, and boy did I get embarrassed 🤣🤣 I had to stop and hide my face a few times from second-hand embarrassment.

But I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I devoured it. It was heartwarming and funny at times but also steamy. The sex scenes were *chef's kiss* amazing. They felt so real and not over the top like a lot of romance novels. They were very realistic and I loved that.

I fell in love with each and every character and loved watching the main characters evolve and grow together.

I can't wait for the sequel! ♡♡

My Audiobook Review -

4 Stars!

Being new to Ms.James' work I've been wanting to pick up her books! As soon as i found out about this audiobook i knew i had to start here first. I was so glad to jump into the Milestone Mischief world! I got into this listen quickly. I enjoyed this audiobook!

This was my first time listening to both Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels! These two were so great with their narration! I so enjoyed what both of them brought to this story as Rafe and Jessa.

Jessa and Rafe's journey was such an entertaining one! I really liked the memorable way these two were brought together and how i got into their story. I enjoyed the chemistry between them and the fact that i felt so many things with these two! I was so glad that i got into their minds as well!

With Playing With The Doctor, Ms.James has created such a good and enjoyable story! I am so looking forward to picking up the rest of the Milestone Mischief Series! I am definitely going to be listening to more of Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels narration as well!

This is a five star, one sitting read for me! Holy buckets! When I tell you, I love a book that just gets your heart racing and brings you back to that feeling of falling in love, and this book got me in the feels!

The main character, Jessa, is independent to a fault. She has spent her entire life pushing people away and doesn't really see how much she's limiting herself. I loved the romance, but even more than that I loved the growth in this character as she learns, or perhaps just faces, why she does this and sees that it's no way to live. Same for our male character, Rafe, he has spent a majority of his adult life blaming himself for things that weren't his fault and paying his own sort of penance for them. Watching him learn to forgive himself was only secondary to watching Jessa's growth. (And I'll be honest enough to admit that was likely due to my seeing some of myself in Jessa.)

Now, the romance was HOT! I'm talking I had to take deep breaths and fan myself off a few times. Their chemistry is off the charts and the "playing doctor" part? O... M... G... That's going to be a scene that plays in my head for the ages! I happen to know that this author hadn't written adult before, but let me tell you that does NOT show! I'd have thought she was an old pro if I didn't know this was her first.

I very much appreciate when authors lay groundwork for future books, and I could see some definite possibilities being laid out for future stories about some of the secondary characters. Well done Ms. James! I'm eagerly anticipating a story about Nate, and I'll be honest I'm very curious about Lola too. I'd even take a bit of a prequel story about Jessa's dad!

If you like some hot contemporary romance, or if you're into characters who grow and learn about themselves through the course of a book, you're going to love Playing with the Doctor!

Maybe it’s me

Maybe it’s the writer, who can say?
This is the 2nd book I have started in this series.
As I recall, I lost interest in the 1st one, too.
This one, I read till around the 30% mark, with it going nowhere.
Finally, bored, looking for actual romance in my romance, I closed it out. Disillusioned, bored, and uninterested in their story, or whether or not they ever get to their hea, I deleted it from my Kindle.
Could be, they are intended for a different age group; someone much younger may enjoy them. Sadly, I am not much younger, and I did not enjoy them enough to finish either one.

I have to tell you, I spent most of my reading time with a smile on my face. Piper James created two fantastically funny characters to bring together on the page. The banter in this book... It was the best thing ever. That if you don't count the hot as f@ck sexy moments between the couple, literally on almost every available surface LOL

Jessa and Rafe are more than just funny. Each of them has their own issues they have to deal with, personal ways of viewing life and other people, that comes between them getting together. When they finally do get together, it's such an outbreak of passion and lust, even when they both are stubborn as hell.

You see it all. The good, the bad, and the "OMG, can they stop that?" part of their relationship journey. I truly enjoyed it and I can't recommend it enough. The whole relationship is laid out there, on those pages, and I didn't even notice it was the whole thing without pause because I was so engrossed in what was going on.

I LOVED Piper James debut novel. The writing style was so stinking cute and so freaking hot, depending on the moment. The editing was also pretty good because I couldn't find one thing wrong with it.

The secondary characters also play an intricate role in what's next for this series. I'm not only interested in Nate and Ivy's story but what about the new Twins in town and Jessa's new best friends? The possibilities are endless... and I'm here for it.

I got an ARC copy from the author and I loved it so much I re-read it on KU when it was released today (Jan 8th, 2021).

Yes, I read this book twice and you would too if you pick it up, so go ahead...

I received this audiobook at my request via promo code from The Flock and this is my honest voluntary review.

The banter in this book between Jessa and Rafe was fantastic! Jessa is a keep-your-heart-in-a-cage bartender called home to keep an eye on the family bar while her dad recovers (as slowly as his acting skills will permit him.) and Rafe is her fathers doctor, reluctantly in on the ruse... and struggling to keep his distance from his patients gorgeous daughter.

Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels do an amazing job at bringing this casual-not-casual no-strings attached but all tangled up romance to life as the two navigate how to open up their hearts and take a chance on love. Each of them have their own issues, Jessa runs from love because her mother abandoned her, and Rafe, feels guilty because of his own past and like he has to stay in control to make up for it but each of them are so hilariously in denial about the instant connection they feel.

This was a great read, and personally having a sick family member in recovery, her dads matchmaking antics and manipulating his doctor had me in stitches.

4.5 stars Jessa is back in her small hometown taking care of her dad, when she meets his very hot doctor in a very humorous and embarrassing circumstance. He’s also someone she used to know from school, but she’s certain he doesn’t remember her (he doesn’t - at first). She’s also not interested in a relationship, especially when she’s planning on going back to Atlanta and her regular life after her dad is better. And Rafe isn’t interested in a relationship, he’s hyper-focused on his career and responsibilities as a doctor, which have a much deeper meaning to him. But they’re also very attracted to each other - so why not make a deal. Nothing serious, just some fun, and then when she leaves town, that’s it, no big deal, party’s over. Yeah right, of course it never quite works out that way, does it.

Jessa and Rafe have great banter, his teasing and cajoling, her awkwardness and sass, they actually compliment each other perfectly, even though neither really wants to admit it. It’s a sweet, romantic, steamy story of friends with benefits that never quite ends the way it was intended.

Audiobook review: The narration is great, the characters are emotional and real, and it definitely added to my enjoyment of the story.

A Wonderfully Delightful Romance! Awesome Listen🎧📚🎧

Playing with the Doctor
Milestone Mischief #1
By: Piper James
Narrated by: Blake Lockheart, Lee Daniels

I enjoyed this fabulously heartfelt and delightful book immensely, it grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it the entire time. It is my first book written by Piper James, she is a gifted author with a wonderful writing style, the characters and storylines she created are original and interesting. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they were easy to care about too. I adored both lead characters, Jessa Maddox and Rafe Walton, each broken in their own way and battle with their own issues and demons from the past. Jessa returns home to tend to her sick father, she was not expecting his Doctor to be at the house, their first meeting was a funny and memorable one. She remembered Rafe from school, it disappointed her he had not remembered her. Despite that, she found herself attracted to him and he to her, the chemistry between them was sizzling, but neither was looking for a relationship. They could only deny each other for so long, and they agreed to enjoy each other’s company while she was in town. All that was fine and dandy until their own insecurities and feelings got in their way. I loved how everything played out in this book, the story was light on angst and there was a perfect balance of drama, humor, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. The lighthearted and humorous moments countered the heavier ones nicely. Piper James, thank you for this enjoyable and entertaining romance novel and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Lee Daniels and Blake Lockheart are the perfect cast to bring these characters to life. They had a complete understanding of the characters they portrayed, giving each a voice that is the perfect fit for their character’s persona, sounding believable in the role they play and just as I pictured the character to sound. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into their performance. These two are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fabulous listen!

Audio Review

This was a fun book about learning to let your heart love again.

Jessa keeps her heart guarded after her mother abandoned her and her father years ago. She has never really felt like she fit in or wanted to risk her heart to make friends or have a relationship. When she goes back home and runs into a hot doctor who she was in school with she starts to wish for those relationships she never thought she wanted.

Rafe has always been the one to take care of others or at least he has for years now. He hasn't wanted to take time to care beyond the casual though as far as relationships were concerned. That is until he sees Jessa and he starts to want more than he ever thought possible.

Great characters and good story and I enjoyed listening.

Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels were really good. It was my first time listening to either but I really enjoyed their voices and their timing was good and they brought this story to life.

I received a copy of this book to listen and review with my honest opinion. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Hot, sexy and so much fun!! I loved these characters as well as the secondary characters who I’m hoping will have their own story soon. The chemistry was undeniable. This story is low angst but it has plenty of content with strong women, sexy men and family & friends support. Oh and just the right amount of hot sex!! The narration performance was amazing. Both narrators did a wonderful job bringing this story to life. This is book 1 with an HEA.
I highly recommend this book.

I got this book as an ARC for an honest review and it did not disappoint! A steamy and sweet small town romance between an ER doctor and a bartender? What could be better? I was super drawn to both main characters and their sexual tension is undeniable. Some scenes were laugh out loud funny, while others were so hot they had me swooning. I absolutely loved every minute reading this book and am definitely looking forward to the next one in the series.

Three words, cute, steamy, and entertaining! This would definitely be classified as a small town romance. Everyone knows everybody so it’s hard to keep secrets. The book was very simple, but kept me hooked. The story itself could have had a little more depth which garners a 4 for me. However, reading about Rafe and Jessa’s love story was touching. They both were living a life with little to no friends because they found it hard to trust and open themselves up for fear of getting hurt. They also both had a hard time doing things for themselves and was always putting others first. If you think about it, that’s great character in a person and why wouldn’t you attach yourself to that? At the same time, I can see where being that way could get others to walk all over you and take advantage. This is what Rafe and Jessa were afraid would happen. This fear brought them together and it consumed them to the point where they didn’t think of themselves and denied pleasure and happiness for them. In the end they both realized that they were living a life of loneliness and they were tired of not allowing themselves to be happy. This ultimately got them to finally open up to each other and bring the relationship to the next level. With tons of steamy scenes and sweet moments, I was happy I stumbled on this author and series in my subscription emails from other authors. I have now gained another favorite and can’t wait to finish the series.

2.5 ⭐

I started this series after reading another book from the author and I was looking forward to it based on the plot... doctor MMC, bartender MFC and a casual to real love trope? Sold.

The plot was good and both the main characters were interesting to get to know, however, although the author revealed why the MFC was the way she was, some personality traits did not match with her actions and that's why I struggled to like her.

Both Rafe and Jessa have difficult pasts and a lot of healing before getting into a healthy relationship, which is understandable. I felt like Rafe's character followed through with his actions but Jessa failed to do so.

The other characters were funny and set a good foundation to what's to come in the series, which is a positive. Personally, I like flawed characters even when they are frustrating but Jessa was not a main character I could fully like, otherwise this book would've had a higher rating for me 😔

Rafe and Jessa story is great small town medical love story.
Rafe is a doctor who has tragic past. Because of events from the his past he always put other people before himself. He thinks he doesn’t deserve happiness. That why he doesn’t believe in relationship and love..

Jessa is a bartender who was raised by her dad. Because her mother left her. She doesn’t believe in relationship or love. She doesn’t have friends because she doesn’t let people get close to her because she had trust issue.

Jessa comes home to take care of her dad because he falls sick. And she meets his doctor which is Rafe. Their first meeting was unforgivable and after that they couldn’t stop thinking about each other. Both of them was afraid to getting in relationship. So you get to see their twist and turn as they make their way through issues and insecurities. You will as see Jessa make friends. You will also meet Rafe siblings. Both friends and siblings are incredible funny and lovable. You get drama passion spicy and love. You get everything you could wanted and more in Playing with the doctor including h.e.a...

Playing with the doctor is a really great book. Piper James does a wonderful job writing the storyline and great characters. I would not only recommend the Playing with the doctor but I would give the book for gift.

Playing With the Doctor
Milestone Mischief #1
By Piper James
Narrated by Blake Lockheart & Lee Daniels

Looking for a funny, easy, romantic listen? I have it right here for you! Playing With the Doctor is exactly what you are looking for. Jessa is going home. Her father is sick and she wants to be there with him. What she doesn't expect to see is doctor making house calls! Rafe is the one that in school took no notice of Jessa, and now he is in her parent's living room! The one you quietly wish for! And he keeps coming back, even though her father is doing better. There is something about Jessa that Rafe cannot get off his mind. When the two finally give in and decide to give in to their lust while Jessa is there, it is explosive. But we know how feelings grow. These two are both carry a set of baggage though, and can't get out of their own way, let alone have a relationship. Or can they? Funny, great characters, family, , passion, healing, it's all there in this story that will give you that all around feel good warmth. I enjoyed this story and can't wait for Nate and Ivy next!

Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels are fantastic narrators and together they bring out the best in this story. Each with their own voices, the personalities and feelings are given to us. The comedic timing is spot on and their performance will make your heart soar. Get ready for a good listen!

Rafe feels guilt and remorse for a tragedy in his past who has spent his life trying to make amends for something that wasn’t his fault by being the best brother and doctor that he can be. When he makes a house call to check up on one of his patients and meets her daughter Jessa the sparks fly.

Jessa returned to her hometown to help her father recover from an illness and believes that she is damaged by her past so she doesn’t allow anyone close. She remembers Rafe as they went to high school together even if he was a few years older. Their first two meetings are to stay the least memorable but there is no denying the chemistry between them so they embark on a physical relationship, what could possibly go wrong?

Rafe and Jessa are both cautious because of their past which causes a few misunderstandings but with the help of their friends and family they may just find their way back to each other. I enjoyed the performance of the narrators as you could feel the self-doubt when it came to their own feelings and the feelings of each other. 🎧Audiobook Obsession

Audiobook Review:

This story grabbed my attention from the very beginning. And it never really let go. I liked the steady pacing and the fantastic characters. Jessa and Rafe the main characters were particularly likeable. They both had rough childhoods that affected them and their approaches to relationships in the present. But their attraction and connection was able to help them to overcome that along with their friends and family. I loved that they were both very big on family even if they had very different family lives growing up. The secondary characters were the kind that have me interested in reading more of the series in future. They were well developed and contributed to the progression of the story while making themselves memorable.

Narrators Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels both did a great job with this story. I felt like both their voices were well suited for these characters, and I loved the level of energy and different tones they had for the different characters. I certainly wouldn’t mind hearing more from either of them in future.

Jessa returns home to take care of her father when he gets sick and ends up having an unfortunate run in with the doctor who treated him in the ER when he shows up to make a house call to check on her father. Rafe is an ER doctor with an exceptional work ethic, going above and beyond to provide top quality care to his patients, sometimes even when they are no longer his patients.

Jessa and Rafe had some great chemistry from the start, which they both tried to ignore due to their own circumstances... Jessa living several hours away, and Rafe having other priorities, until the pull to each other just becomes too much and they give in.

I really liked both Jessa and Rafe as the main characters and I really enjoyed the story line. I think they had great chemistry and I highly enjoyed the secondary characters. This was my first book by this author and I found it to be well written and very engaging. I am excited to read more in the series. The audiobook for this story was very well done. Both narrators did a truly fantastic job!

This sweet and sassy romantic comedy was highly entertaining right from the start. How Jessa and Rafe first meet is quite hysterical! Their attraction is instant, but both have reservations about relationships due to their troubled pasts. This sets the tone for their story and as insecurities and priorities create obstacles for them to open up and communicate, their steamy no-strings attached fling only gets more complicated as their feelings deepen and find themselves falling in love. Timing is everything and for Jessa and Rafe, it was time to stop running away and allow themselves to have their own happily ever after. I look forward to more books in this series!

Listened on audio: My first listen by Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels and they did an amazing performance. I enjoyed how they captured the characters’ personalities and really elevated the emotions to enhance their feelings and connection to each other. A very pleasurable listening experience!

What a great romance, just enough angst with our two main characters - Jessa and Rafe. This was a well written, perfectly narrated (loved this duo) sweet / steamy romance read. Can be read as a stand alone although there is a lead as to who will be our book 2 main characters - super eager for that one now - and a HEA that is sure to please! I loved how these two just came across so realistic - I can totally see the miscommunication, angst, friendships, banter ect being me or anyone I know - so I loved that. I also appreciated the balance of sweet and steamy and the relationships shared outside of our main characters - Jessa with her dad and new found besties and Rafe with his family and bestie - great dynamics and banter. A light hearted, sweet read / listen that has me eager for more!

3.5 for this one.

I’m finding I like miscommunications in books less and less these days. Especially in this book.

I thought it was going to be an age gap doctor thing, but it wasn’t and I appreciated that. I like that Jessa allowed herself to get friends and open up and make a life for herself. I was totally behind the “no strings attached” thing her and Rafe had going.

I like that they kinda danced around each other at first, for various reasons.

However, the entire time they were sleeping together, they communicated all the time. That had no qualms telling each other their feelings or what they were thinking or doubts they were having.

And then, out of no where, we just have one massive miscommunication? It really just didn’t seem plausible. (Like, ok if he was ending it, you don’t think he would have like… told you?!)

I liked most of the book but that “conflict” just really killed the book for me.

Title: Playing with the Doctor
Author: Piper James
Format: Audio
Narrators: Lee Daniels, Blake Lockheart
Genre: Romantic comedy, small town, FWB
Standalone: Yes
Part of a Series: Book 1 in Milestone Mischief
POV: Jessa and Rafe
Steam Level: Slow burn to toasty
4/5

Playing with the Doctor is (I think) the first book I've read by Piper James. I liked that it was both funny but also dealt with some strong emotional baggage. This baggage created both Rafe and Jessa's aversions to relationships. But it wasn't overly dramatic, which was nice. I dipped in and out of this story with no difficulties remembering what had happened. I definitely want to check out more of this series and this author.

I received this audiobook for free from Audiobook Obsession and Pink Flamingo Productions. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I don't review romance books very often. Most of the time they're so formulaic that they all tend to follow the same story arc and they get boring. Not this one!
Honestly, I was so invested in Jessa and Rafe that I read it all in one day.
I thought I had it figured out and then the little left turns that the author took with the love story and the secondary story with Jessa's Dad were great. I didn't see them coming.
I love a good HEA, and even though romance books basically guarantee that, it's always nice when things wrap up in a way that you can't quite predict.
Kudos to Piper James for the weaving of storylines together and giving you just enough of a taste of what Book 2 will bring that you ABSOLUTELY have to read the next one.
I recommended this to so many friends!!!

Playing with the Doctor, the first book in the Milestone Mischief series is, a wonderfully written and refreshingly light. Both the storyline and the characters captured and held my attention. Raph and Jessa are absolutely charming, delightful, a bit awkward, and totally appealing characters. They were made for each other, a perfect match, and I really enjoyed their energy and banter. Their story was sweet, amusing, romantic, funny, and even steamy; I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

Blake Lockheart and Lee Daniels did a fantastic job of portraying Jess and Raph's personalities and connection. They made the story come to life. Playing with the Doctor was a fun listen, one I'll recommend.

To be completely honest, the story was okay. It didn’t really stand out to me as far as the plot is concerned. An average couple with communication issues. They took turns being immature and while there was a physical attraction that turned into some hot scenes, I didn’t get much depth to their connection. However, the secondary characters peaked my interest so I may continue on.
