We only get Victor's point of view so we see him meet Jake and fall in love hard. The first kisses and intimacy are beautiful. The feelings of first love written with a delicacy and vulnerability that Hayden Hall excels at. We get a small look at Jake's downward spiral back at home. He has become his own disaster and the heartache for both of them is real. The author is quick to promise that this will all be resolved in the next book and I'm holding him to that.
Victor and Jake meet in a pub one night while out with friends and it's instalove. Jake is on a two week holiday, but they decide to spend every moment together that they can. When their time is up Jake promises to come back at Christmas to be with Victor again, but it fast starts to look like that won't happen.
What starts out as multiple daily texts and calls turns to a trickle and then stops altogether on Jake's part. Victor is heartbroken and thinks Jake has just lost interest or found someone new, but when Jake returns home he's overcome with depression from being away from Victor. Then he loses his job and can't find another. College becomes overwhelming and he starts missing classes. When his best friend and roommate, Lucy, tells Jake she's moving permanently to be with Viktor's friend Andras it's the last straw and now he'll be all alone.
This book is a prequel to the book 'One More Shot' to share how Victor and Jake first met. I have not yet read their full length story. It's next on my list. Just so you know going in, the ending is heartbreaking. Jake is severely depressed. So if that is a trigger for you please be careful. This author had the gift of writing so that you feel what the characters feel and it's a lot of depression and angst. I'm truly hoping 'One More Shot' has a wonderful ending.
The prequel is written in Victor's POV, with the last chapter in Jake's.
I had started reading and following this author since 2021 and decided to catch up on some books I missed. Hayden has grown so much as an author since then and now. To try and compare this book to those written now would be an eye opener. But, truth be told, I think I have become more selective in my reading requirements and Hayden Hall will always bne up there as an author who released all of my emotions throught his storytelling. Yes, this is not an HEA for Viktor and Jake, but he did not leave me without hope, which we have been promised that his novel "One More Shot" will provide the answers.
3.5 Stars The prequel follows Viktor and Jake, how they met, became friends, fell for each other, and parted ways. It gave enough of a taste for their coming story without too many details, mainly focused on what they felt for each other and how they made the most of those 2 weeks together. Mostly told in Viktor's point of view and once in Jake's.
There were some minor typos but the author's message still came across. Looking forward to the full story in One More Shot.🙂
This was a new MM Author and I couldn't wait to read his work. This prequel gave me all the feels, ending in a bit of shock and hope, wondering where it would go from here and if it would end in a happily ever after. Great way to give the reader that insight to determine if they want to move forward to find out how Viktor and Jake's story ends. This author has definitely intrigued me and I am looking forward to reading their story further.
Jake meets Viktor during his two week summer vacation in Budapest. There is an instant connection between the two that builds into love over the two weeks. A lot of sweet moments and sexy times. A promise was made that Jake will come back for Christmas, but can he keep his promise? To be continued in One More Shot.
If you've read One More Shot, then you know this is not going go end well. This is the story of how the MC's met and fell in love and then Jake broke both their hearts. It was cute but had a number of errors in it, and I think because I knew the ending would be painful, I didn't get fully immersed in the story
While I understand that this is a prequel and the MCs eventually get their HEA, I hate reading a story with a sad ending. Also, this author needs a good copy editor or proofreader, as typos abounded throughout. There was one lovely line that spoke to my soul, though: "I'd dream a whole eternity if I could."
