I literally love everything about this book, except Riette and the use of the word truth multiple times.
Riette is close to the most frustrating MC I’ve ever read. She seems to forget that she has lied several times to Laurent. That her actions almost caused the death of her husband and doom to her country. Her victim mentality is so frustrating to read, and her double standards on how she can act but not Laurent makes her very unlikable. Laurent has yet to lie to her, but Riette lies several times and that’s fine. She doesn’t trust Laurent, but it’s horrible when Laurent doesn’t trust her. Laurent admits many of his faults multiple times. Riette has yet to admit that she has done many things wrong as well.
The political intrigue, world building, premise still great!
Somethings are a bit unbelievable in regard to Laurent’s mother, but I can easily overlook that.
Again, in truth, truthfully, to tell the truth, used way too many times.
Content: no spice, one bastard, mild violence. Very very very mild fade to black, barely implied

I enjoyed this so much.
The characters are the strong-holding type, who started getting into my heart in Treason's Crown, but in War's Crown, they burrowed right in and made themselves at home.
Which is an important side note about this author, generally speaking. I can enjoy a story and enjoy good characters in a good book with good writing, but there are very few authors, so far, that craft the kind of characters that stick to me in the special way that Anne Wheeler's do. Something about her style resonates with me. Reading her books feel like making friends. :o) I've probably said this in other reviews on her books, but SERIOUSLY.
As for War's Crown specifically, there's a healthy dose of all the things that keep a person awake and wanting to read more. Mystery, humanness, conflict, and the sweet spots of relief that give your poor heart a break. An excellent novella in my estimation. :o)

I loved Treason's Crown, the first in this series. Wheeler writes beautifully and Riette is a brilliant character. In this second instalment, we see Riette ensconced as Queen and philsophical about her arranged marriage to Laurent. This story focuses on their relationship and Wheeler does a good job developing them both and making them more rounded, especially Laurent. He really isn't the bully that we were left with at the end of Book 1.
It was a good third shorter than the first one and on finishing it it felt a little incomplete. I also felt it moved the series more on the romantic side which I wasn't really expecting. We get a sense of the rivalry between regions and Meirdre's vulnerability to attack from a variety of neighbouring kingdoms. I'm expecting we'll see much more of this in the next book.
I'm left wanting more which is always what a good author does in a series and fortunately I only have to wait until the end of August for the next instalment.

I am wanting more!
Loved the writing, and the characters were great. The intrigue was superb. But I was disappointed in the ending. Too many things left hanging. I was hoping for more resolution and I certainly hope there is a third book that takes us through the battles with the forces poised to fight Meirdre, and the relationship between Laurent and Riette.

Awesome story line and characters

I enjoyed immersing myself back into this world and seeing Riette and Laurent's relationship struggles and adjustments to their circumstances. Riette is adjusting to her new role as his wife and crownkeeper and I like that we are with her as she grows, makes mistakes and struggles with her genuine emotions. While it didn't feel as gritty and raw as the first one, I liked the insights into Laurent's character and seeing Riette's continual growth in the midst of unusual circumstances. Hoping that their story continues in a 3rd installment.
