Gentle Control was an urban danmei novel that was tagged with ‘sadistic love’ and ‘coercion’.
The protagonist shou Xie Sui was a proud son of heaven. He had an illustrious family background, was cold and removed from desire, and attracted many (psychopathic) admirers. From the gentle senior to the paranoid president to the haughty and proud arch-enemy, these big guys were all the top leaders of their respective fields, yet they were all crazy about him.
After pushing him down a series of mentally and physically abusive paths, the three of them decided to join hands to destroy the Xie Family, imprison Xie Sui, crush his pride, and turn him into a pet that could only rely on them.
While the crowd of readers howled “Wuwuwu the feels~”.
Song Yu was already so angry he was going crazy. Not wanting to read any more of this eye-searingly bad novel, he cursed, “Idiots.” and hurried offline.
As a result, when he woke up, he’d transmigrated.
He’d transmigrated to become the Third Young Master of the Song Family in the novel, who had only been briefly mentioned in passing, would die of a terminal illness, and was Xie Sui’s childhood friend.
Song Yu was terribly upset. At the same time, he’d already come to a decision in his heart––those three idiots, had better not think about wanting to get close to his little childhood friend!
*
Xie Sui was born cold hearted. In two lifetimes, he’d never tasted the sweetness of love, nor had he ever experienced the feeling of being protected.
After destroying three big families and personally killing his enemies, he was reborn back to when he was 15 years old. He had to hide the violence and coldness in his heart and pretend to be the youth with a gentle and clean appearance that he’d been in the past.
Everything was the same as before, except for the little childhood friend that was nothing but a vague memory in his previous life who was exceptionally different this time.
Like the spring breeze that thawed the frozen soil, someone reached into the abyss and grabbed his blood-stained hand.
*
Song Yu tore apart a love confession letter like he was venting and fumed, “Don’t pay attention to those people, don’t believe in their sweet words. They’re all scum, and their love is worthless. Don’t like them, okay?”
Xie Sui gazed at him for a long time, then laughed, “Alright, I don’t like them.”
I initially picked this up because I loved the premise: a shou/uke doing literally everything to protect the gong/seme and shield him away from the people who caused him misery. But the thing is, this ended up just an okay read for me.
Though I loved the premise, I think the execution of the plot isn't as smooth and natural as I'd liked it to be and I was disappointed. I noticed that there are also a lot of unnecessary details that could have done without. It would have been less clunky if the author was more straight to the point. This is the kind of story that will not linger in my mind. I still give this a generous 3 stars because I still liked the MC and ML's interaction.
Song Yu read a danmei book where the protagonist suffers continuously in the hand of various gongs. Then he woke up in the book world, as the protag's insignificant childhood friend who's destined to die young. Instead of being resigned to his fate, he's determined to use his limited years to help the protagonist.
What a fun book! I love Song Yu, the mc. His trolling on the school forums gave me a good laugh, and when he fought—badass!
The romance is a slow burn, but full of sweet & cute interactions from the beginning. The ML falls in love pretty soon, and his scheming and internal monologue are hilarious.
“Thank you, my dear deskmate.” (…) “Don’t be so mushy.” You can get rid of the word ‘deskmate’.
~~ “You arrived by my side, a unique existence who can’t be covered up by any worldly label. Your background, appearance, and past, none of it can affect your uniqueness. You are just you, Song Yu.” Bringing hope and light, a Peter Pan who came into my fifteen year old self’s life.
I also appreciate that the transmigration part is much more than it seems, and is explained pretty well.
A lot of people said the ending is a bit rushed, and I agree. There’s also some family makjang towards the end and some loose ends, but thankfully the story switches back to the school life once the big mystery surrounding the transmigration part is wrapped up.
I was pretty hooked to the story, since I love the transmigration trope and all. School life? Yes, super fun, I also love the side characters a lot.
Despite many people not liking xie sui, I find myself liking him, mainly because of him and song yu’s dynamic. Maybe I just have a thing for ml that’s super cold to everyone but super indulgent towards the mc, idk, it’s just a different feeling, reminds me a lot of lan zhan and Wei ying.
I did find the transmigration plot twist pretty interesting, I certainly wasn’t expecting that. I was really confused whenever they suddenly change to a past dream, since I had a totally different speculation on everything, so mostly I wasn’t taking it seriously until they suddenly mention it and I was like, oh shit I actually have to take note of this? These kinds of plots are really annoying to me since I don’t have a good memory but for this story, it ended up being a really good plot twist so I have to give it credits (though, it’s so confusing…..)
I have to mention that for me, since no matter how hard I try to understand what was happening, I just can’t, so I mostly just skimmed through all the dialogue with the 008 and the main god and all that, seriously, it’s so confusing I just didn’t care. It was going so good before but suddenly the author decides to randomly info dump everything to us out of nowhere?? I can’t stand these kinds of stories since I need time to comprehend things
The ending is super rushed too, a big thing such as the whole idk..creator and the dimensions being destroyed?? And we just moved on from that so quickly?? I dunno, I felt that maybe just maybe we can talk about it more and not just skim through it, since it’s the main villain of the story, no?? Anyways, I didn’t enjoy it that much
I did like that they just casually went back to their high school lives, like..they just ignored everything that happened and went back to school to study. Sometimes I really be forgetting those are literal high school kids going through all this
Anyways, story was okay, maybe the translation that I read was bad or it’s just my reading comprehension, didn’t understand all those superficial stuff at the end, enjoyed the dynamics alot, if you’re looking for a transmigration novel that’s different from the ordinary, go ahead and read this
i skimmed through it. i guess i learned that this type of relationship dynamics just aren't for me, it's too irritating. Xie Sui was really pissing me off
This is a story on how Song Yu woke up and realized he got transported to the book he recently read.
This was just an okay-ish read for me. It was a reincarnation to another world with a system theme but it was not that prominent on the plot imo. This is more for me a young adult romance. The romance between Song Yu and Xie Sui is the only redeeming part of the book for me.
The plot is all over the place and lots of petty cannon fodders. The great reveal at the end is sooooo underwhelming and ridiculous. A bit disappointed.
Alternative title: 'Everyone loves the Cannon Fodder'
DNF @ ch 14
This just isn't for me I'm afraid. I think if you like danmei set in a modern setting then you should give it a go. No doubt it will be a stunning book as Rosmei are releasing the official English translation.
4.5 stars rounded up because I am feeling E M O T I O N S
You know when you finish a book and feel close to tears, not because you're sad, but because you're just so happy with how the characters persevered and grabbed their happiness at last? That's where I'm at right now.
This book is like 90% fluffy, sweetness, and humor, with most of the horrible stuff happening before the book started. It is referred to a lot because... timelines, transmigration, revenge, etc. and it hurts to know how much the characters were targeted. So, that's the max 10% of the angst. 90% is our MC trying to protect the protagonist of the story who, unbeknownst to him, actually remembers his past life, so he's in the process of taking out the trash humans.
So, so funny with some great face slapping and giggle-worthy cute moments. The... system stuff was a little confusing, the ending a tiny bit too fast, and honestly I would have LOVED some extras of their college and professional lives. Mostly college, because it was set up soooo well for... great moments haha.
Anyhow, I recommend it. I might not re-read it, but do think it is worth reading if you haven't.
This was a really fun book. There's so much humor in the beginning, it got me through some depressing personal times. Whenever something especially funny or sweet happened, the comments were a joy to read as well. Dummy's translations had a number of comments that made it feel like I was reading the novel with a bunch of funny friends.
I love the couple and their personalities. I feel quite bad for the mc's second love interest, he seemed really strong and interesting as well.
The final parts of this book was a bit wild... I felt like everything was being thrown into the story to try and explain the rebirths and transmigration. Honestly, I think not having it explained would have worked just as well.
Other than the fun I had reading it, there's no real morals in this story. Other than maybe focus on your study and you can be like the Mc?
Pi pi pi
I started this much earlier in the year, but at that time, the translation wasn’t all the way out, so I had to drop it. I was so happy to find it fully translated this time.
Song Yu and Xie Sui are both vicious and passionate individuals, and despite the literal author being against them, they managed to overpower the narrative itself and find happiness. Parts of it reminded me of “Wait For Me After School”, but ultimately, it had its own interesting twist on an ordinary high school life.

Beware, its a slow-burn, with a really rushed and weird ending, with a family tree that was very confusing to understand, with a timeline very difficult to piece together, and a wow revelation that changed nothing but left many question marks. Truth be told, I loved Song Yu, the main character, he was dope. I also loved the High School life, it grew on me. As to the ML, meh.
I love MC that hide things and are cunning, but when you know that the ML is this plotting cold guy that hides everything from a good natured MC you feel kinda conflicted. Because you can’t really trust the ML even after 60 chapters, you naturally are guarded towards future circumstances that may disrupt the good happy school life.
So if you dont enjoy scheming behind the MC back, avoid this book.
Though, I have to be honest: I laughed a lot. A lot lot.
I don’t know why do I keep buying books before I read them. This on here sucks. Why is it so high rated on Novel updates!! The story is surface level I felt like an airhead while reading this and kept losing focus. Do I recommend this? Yes, if you enjoy middle schoolers novels.
I dropped this 23% ( chapter 26 ) I’ll go and try to cancel & refund my order.
Almost two years later, I have finally come back to finish reading this novel because it’s getting an official English publication by Rosmei under the title “Everyone Loves the Cannon Fodder” (the new title doesn’t really make much sense to me…). And thank God I can read Vietnamese otherwise this would go unfinished, as the English fantranslation is not finished lol. Anyway:
I think Song Yu as a character is very fun, and Xie Sui is fine- a pretty standard cold & aloof ML. I liked that they had interactions with their classmates and that Song Yu had friends outside of Xie Sui, but I did not like that Xie Sui didn’t have any connections to anyone else but Song Yu. Song Yu’s interactions with his family were mostly fun & the Xie family drama is so muddled it feels like you need a family tree to keep track of what’s going on lol.
I think the plot was okay. It’s mostly slice of life high school with some face-slapping (the system stuff disappears for the most part before coming back at the end). Song Yu’s dynamic with Xie Sui is sweet, but they definitely could have had more moments to develop their connection more. They loved each other so much that they found free will, but I wasn’t 100% sold on the intensity and romanticism of it, unfortunately. But I loved the glimpse into their domestic lives in their 20s with a pet cat and was honestly more intrigued by the flashbacks than in the current timeline.
There’s a lot of social media comments in this one and I just skipped all of them, they were annoying to read. I just read what Song Yu typed and the group chat with his classmates. Otherwise, all the fujo & school gossip comments were a pain in the ass to scroll through. (Also never understood fujos doing RPS to classmates that they see everyday……is that not weird as hell.)
I also felt that the ending was kinda rushed and lackluster, but the “system and lord god” trope is always hand-wavy, and I haven’t seen a really good resolution for it in anything I’ve read yet lol. Zhao Ziyu’s character plotline towards the end also seemed really useless to me. Overall, it was an okay read, nothing really to write home about.
This is a cute story that came at the right time. The additional points are for that.
Maybe it’s because I always avoided this kind of C-Drama tycoon Scion’s kind of trope, so it didn’t displease me the surreal situation. Maybe it was also the ‘trasmigration’ trope that made all those blood bath with bullies and crazy rich characters enjoyable.
The book present many issues, many things were presented and then shut down without pathos, like how XS just stabbed the system and it all ended like that.
Or the things with ZZ were just put there, the man didn’t even do anything with his memories of the past and was cancelled just like that? Don’t hint of his crush for SY if he wasn’t going to mess with them!
Or even that first gong that I forgot the name, wasn’t he going to make SY pay? He just disappeared.
And how about the extra? It was useless, without start or ending.
The ending was too rushed and it wasn’t satisfying. Like would liked to see XS struggle to win SY’s family over.
Besides, I can’t accept that SY’s mom didn’t had a name!
But this book made me want to dive in modern trope danmei that I snobbed for so long, so take credit.

I wasn’t actually expecting to enjoy the book as much as I did. I like that it was a slow burn and nothing felt like it was forced!! Although the ending did feel a bit like the story was suddenly going through the rest of the plot on 1.5x speed. I still think it at least managed to cover the major points at the end!!
I really adored the relationship between Song Yu and Xie Sui!! They can never stay mad at each other and are instantly calmed when the other is around. Especially Xie Sui whenever Song Yu was around his dark aura immediately starts to fade lolol he is just so in love with his Yuyu!!
Ma Xiaoding was so funny, always managing to implicate Song Yu somehow even though he only wants to brag about his prestige lolol.
Falling in love in both lives,, they make me ill, they are destined for each other!!! After everything, they deserve to be happy with each other without any nasty people trying to ruin it for them!!

A dammei is about Song Yu, a reader of a bad and toxic novel. Out of anger he stops reading the novel and next awakens in the book. He is determined to save the ML Xie Sui. He will do everything in his power to give Xie Sui a good life. Loved Loved Loved this story there were so many plot twists.
“ Song Yu turned off the screen and said to Xie Sui, "This time, I'll definitely sit in the most prominent position. You'll be able to see me as soon as you look up, and you just have to treat everyone else like air and make your speech to me. It should be easier when you're facing someone you know." He managed to amuse Xie Sui. His lips curved, and he said meaningfully, "Aright, I'll treat them like air. My eyes only have you."
I listen to these novels as a bit of light reading whilst doing my chores or cooking, so I get done with these way quicker.
Amongst all the fillers that just have the plot move forward, I must say I was overjoyed whenever there were moments of revenge. They were thoroughly ruthless, unforgiving and utterly destructive. It truly satisfied the thirst for vengeance in me. 😈
Besides that, this was such a predictable slow-burn, I stopped at the part where SY confesses i.e. around 80% of the novel. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy slow-burns — when they're executed well and aren't as predictable. I've stopped at that point and have blessed them with a happily ever after in my mind. My patience wears thin sometimes LOL.
Realised I never finished this, so restarted it to catch myself up. I enjoy this novel, and it has one of the best 'transmigration into a book' twists. That being said, the truth behind the system & plot doesn't hit for me, a lot of other c-novels impress me more in that category. I also preferred the story in the beginning when Yuyu was allowed to be super badass. By the end, it seemed like his role was to sit on the sidelines and cheer while Xie Sui was badass instead (apart from the system, which XS couldn't interact with). So it's good, but for me the ending didn't keep up with the great start, so it's not a favourite.
This wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t the best. The romance between the main couple as well as the friendships + SYs family dynamic was pretty cute. But I feel like the big reveal was very underwhelming, and in a way rushed? The story itself felt rushed and incomplete honestly, there were still a few questions lest unanswered (to me). This isn’t to say that I don’t recommend, because I do- the relationship was very cute. Adorable honestly, which is why I don’t regret reading it.
Song Yu and Xie Sui make a pretty well matched couple – clever, witty, mature (which is important when you have random rebirths and transmigrations taking place) – and the plot progresses steadily too.
The side cast is also well developed and hilarious when on screen. The system bit however is a little... poorly developed, to put it generously. The ending is kind of a mess and rushes to close the story when it could have been planned out more smoothly.
I'm rooting for them! ✨✨

The book was fun to read and easy to get through. It did make me annoyed every now and then, and there was a bit of outdated usage of words that are offensive in the present day. I’m not sure if it’s just the translation I read. I loved the characters, and the side characters were developed enough for me to care about them. The main character might be a little overpowered though. Overall, it’s a pretty cute read with a lot of faceslapping.
This was unexpectedly cute??? I started reading this novel without pretensions, but I immediately fell in love with the MC's charisma. I was afraid of a soft and sweet MC, however, Song Yu is sarcastic, violent, provocative, and stubborn. Although the ML falls in love first, they have a sweet slow burn.
.... it really does not make sense. Good ideas but very badly executed, it is all over the place and even descriptions such as hair colors (and important plot points) keep changing. It seems the author did not have a clear path for the story and we jumped around by their side. I want to know why it is rated so highly in NU o.o
