Professor Whit Filmore thought he’d left his life as a detective behind to focus on teaching, but after a personal realization changed his life, he discovered his heightened senses help him pick up on clues that others can’t.
Together with his assistant Anna, an empath who is barely scratching the surface of her own talents, Whit travels to Aldridge, a small town in Texas, at the request of an old acquaintance in the FBI. Two girls have gone missing from opposite sides of town, and no one is cooperating. With so many obstacles, can Whit use his keen senses to find the girls in time?
WL Knightly is a thriller/murder mystery co-writing pen name for two USA Today Best Selling Authors. "W" when not writing can be found dealing in Antique Jewelry and hanging out with her awesome hubby and three kids. And "L" is a full-time writer that lives near Nashville, TN and spends her time cooking, hanging out with her hubs and 3 kiddos, or wrangling new ideas as they float by! Their love of a good mystery novel caused them to combine forces and go after their dream of telling stories that sent a shiver down your spine. I'm thinking they figured it out! These two friends met years ago when they both started writing and publishing in various young adult genres and needed a critique partner. The rest is history...They'd love for you to join the fun! This is kind of what I imagine a cross between Ghost Whisperer and Criminal Minds would look like, even though there are no actual ghosts involved. The mystery is tense and suspenseful. The characters, complex yet somewhat whimsical. And the paranormal aspects of the story are surprisingly low key. I loved getting this look into Whit’s life and following along as he and his assistant Anna investigated the disappearances. They kept me guessing to the very end. I can’t wait to read more about these characters. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
The mystery was good, but the extra senses part was off putting and not necessary. I don't know how Rose ever got to be police chief. She was inept. The editing of the e-book was not good. There are 4 people at the table but 5 cups were served. The name Katie is used when it should be Anna.
A promising story waylaid by numerous issues that could've been addressed with the help of an editor.
Basic missteps include
• Using the wrong name (more than once in reference to different characters) when indicating who's speaking or acting, not like the character used to be named Helen and now is named Katie and it didn't get updated in one spot, but like it said Katie (who couldn't possibly be in this scene) when it meant Anna.
• Using the wrong word. They may sound alike, but they don't mean the same thing.
• Too much unnecessary repetition. For example (paraphrasing)
"We're so proud of her," she said.
Whit could tell she was proud of her daughter.
Well, really, Whit. Figured that one out, did you? It's easy to see why you're the detective in this story.
• Too much telling, not enough showing. For instance, the story told us again and again that Whit & Anna have "special empathic (not psychic) abilities," but we don't see them in action much. Anna saying things like "I have a bad feeling about this" doesn't really count IMHO.
• The writing overall felt clunky and unpolished to me.
I don't usually write such long reviews, but this book irritated me because the story had the potential to be excellent, but it fell disappointingly short in the execution.
I think the fact that these co-authors cut their teeth in YA still shines through. I enjoyed the characters, Whit and Anna. They make a good team. Everything rolled along at a gentle pace with a solid story line. It wasn't easy to spot the ending, but this one was interesting enough to get me to the final pages. That hasn't always been the case this year.
Im not sure what to think of this book. It is a very simple book. A bit superficial. It never quite gripped me but still flowed well enough that I didn't get quite bored.
The romance aspect felt out of place and most of the time the characters were a bit off in dialogue and action. The plot was ok but how the conclusions were made came a bit too easy in my opinion.
“Find me,” she whispered in his ear. Whit bolted upright. “What is it?” asked Anna across the room, who sat up and pulled her covers tight around her. “Did you hear her too?”
WL Knightly never disappoints me, each series brings something exciting and new to the table. Dead on Time hooked me into the pages and had me being a detective from the first chapter. I really loved the suspense, twists and realistic characters. First book I’ve read with no romance or sex for a while and it was refreshing. Couldn’t put this one down until the last page was turned.
A town divided, two missing girls, one is black and comes from the wrong side of town, the other is white and lived a life of privilege. Criminology professor, whit is asked to help the FBI find the girls. He takes one of his students to help because just like him she’s fine tuned into her intuition and emotions. Nothing could of prepared them for the mishandling of the case and the dysfunction of this small town sheriff’s station. It was heartbreaking to watch the parents lose hope after not knowing where their baby was after six long weeks. The lengths they went to, in order to get noticed by the authorities who seemed interested in finding the daughter of the town’s influential businessman, whilst discarding Nisha’s whereabouts.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "DEAD ON TIME". WOW!!!! What a riviting exciting interesting, intriguing, intense filled drama mystery with suspense, deception, secrets, lies, manipulation, danger, killing, angst, humor, twists at every turn. Whit Fillmore former detective now Professor teaching criminology earned his fame in helping the police solve special cases. Anna Upton is getting her Masters in criminology Whit is her professor & helping her deal with her gift of being sensitive to energy around people as well as being an empath both have this ability. Whit & Anna travel to a small town in Aldridge Texas to alive 2 missing girls case they meet Chief Rose Dash who's annoyed Special Agent Birch ditched them left town not solving anything passing the case to a Professor & his assistant. David Buller wealthiest businessman in town everyone seems to be afraid of or money talks he owns most the town his daughter Katie is one of the missing girls. Doug Fowler use to work for Buller his daughter Nisha is the other girl missing but she lives on other side of Creek low income no one seems to care she's gone missing Birch said she ran away. First might in hotel room both Whit & Anna hear the same thing a voice saying find me he bolts upright Anna asks what happened that's when they realise they hear same thing wad that Nisha voice spooky. I definitely recommend to get this amazingly well written murder mystery a stand alone story but hopefully there'll be more stories with Professor Whit & spunky assistant Anna Upton working more cases I really liked these characters maybe show more of their abilities as they work on difficult cases.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review.

If your a fan of Criminal Minds your going to love this book. This is a huge mystery and Whit is able to pick up on clues no one can when these girls go missing. He has a special ability to pick up on things you see. Whit was a detective until he decided to become a Professor teaching criminology. Now though he is needed in Texas along with his assistant who also has the gift. This story has a lot of stuff going on in it and will keep your attention. I enjoyed reading it and thought it was a good story I'm just not so much on the special gifts and that kind of took away from the story for me but that is my own personal issue.
Wow what an amazing book. I loved it. I was hooked from the very first page. I couldn't put it down. I read it all in one sitting. Professor Whit and his assistant Anna are a crime solving duo who have some unique abilities that helps them in solving cases. A case is brought to their attention of two missing teenage girls. There are a lot of secrets and mystery surrounding the town and the professor eagerly decides to uncover the truth and find the girls. Professor Whit is a 44 year old ex-detective and now professor and Anna is a 22 year old assistant to the professor. She is studying for her degree in criminology. I loved their witty chats and their relationship is so good. the case delves into divides in society and and incompetence of the town police. Chief Rose brought her personal judgements to her job which isn't what she is supposed to do. I would love to see more books centred on the professor and his assistant, Anna and the different cases they solve. A fabulous read and another feather in the cap of this wonderful author. I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily reviewed this book. This is my honest review.
The author drops you right into the story in the midst of a conversation between the two main characters, which gives you Whit Filmore's entire back story all at once. The pacing of the plot improves as the story progresses with some minor issues with plot points. For example, an FBI agent sends Whit to investigate the case, but the FBI agent leaves town. Doesn't Whit need some kind of credentials to wander around town questioning people, or is everyone just supposed to take him at his word that he's operating in an official capacity? The police chief can't seem to make up her mind whether she wants to investigate the case or not, and at times, she seems to disregard actual evidence that Whit is bringing to her. I was expecting some kind of mystical / spiritual / psychic aspect, but other than a time or two when Anna "has a feeling" about a room or a person, and Whit references teaching about "aliens and Bigfoot", this wasn't really explained or explored. Despite these issues, this was still a quick, entertaining little read.
Professor Whit Filmore has a sixth sense. Now that he is teaching, rather than working as a detective, he figured that this skill would never be used again. When he is asked to help solve a murder in a small Texas town, it appears that the sixth sense is not only real but will not stay silent.
Upon getting a call from the FBI to help, Professor Filmore reluctantly agrees to help and asks one of his teaching assistants, Anna, to join him. Fillmore believes that Anna may have the gift as well, so he has encouraged her to develop it. Arriving in Aldridge, Texas they discover that there is a link between the death of two girls that the police had not caught. One girl came from the right side of the track and the other from the wrong side of the track. Will the sixth sense help them solve the case?
This is a solid thriller, complete with a secret society, old money, a small college, and a good ol’ boy system. Knightly has created a quirky professor that any reader would enjoy getting to know.
This review contains a spoiler. I managed to finish it so it gets two stars, but it's more like one and a half. Let's start with the secret cult stuff where people keep leaving things laying around conviently that point towards them being part of said secret cult. Because of course you answer the door and let people in leaving your ceremonial robe and bell hanging round. Then there was a lot of just weird flip flopping with whether Anna and Whit are supposed to become romantically involved. First there's hints they might then it seems they won't. Make up your mind. Rose was pretty useless as a cop, you've just found a girl who was supposedly kidnapped and you don't take her to a doctor or take her clothes for forensic examination, yeah okay then. Also the blurb mentions Whit has "heightened senses" and Anna is an Empath. These skills don't make much impact onto their investigation apart from Whit picking up on when people are lying. Overall I found the telling of the story quite wooden. I have no interest in reading the rest in the series.
Whit, a criminology professor and former detective, has earned a name for himself as the person who can help solve crimes. He gets a call from an old acquaintance to help on a missing person case and asks his assistant and criminology student, Anna, to come with as they are both able to read the energy from people and she can provide a second set of eyes. As the story progresses something is rotten in the state of Texas, the victim list expands, and if they can get to the bottom of everything they may just bring everyone home. W.L. Knightly as taken this series in a slightly different direction from previous books. I am eagerly waiting on the next case they go to solve.
I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
I read this book aloud during a four-day road trip. The characters and plot were interesting and realistic, but I definitely would have enjoyed it more without the scatological words, f-bombs, taking God’s name in vain, etc.
The author did a good job of keeping me in suspense, with the result that I tossed around various theories for who did what before the author revealed enough information for me to figure out who was guilty. I was grateful that neither of the two main characters succumbed to the romantic interests of others. Although part of a series, this is definitely a standalone novel with a nice resolution at the end.
If you enjoy a compelling mystery/suspense novel and don’t mind prolific profanity, then you may like this book. If you find foul language annoying or offensive, there are other alternatives available.
This riveting thriller has deceit, lies, secrets, manipulation and danger. This takes place in the small town of Aldridge, Texas with Whit and Anna trying to figure out what happened to two missing girls from different parts of town. Whit was a detective but quit to become a criminology professor who is also an empath. Anna is class assistant to Professor Filmore and a strong empath. Chief Rosemary Dash of the Aldridge Police Department is trying to prove herself but still has issues trusting men due to her ex husband. In her small town Bull Buller is the richest guy who everyone listens to. Interesting way to write this case that kept me devouring the pages trying to figure out what happened.
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the first book in a new series about Whit, a criminology professor and former detective. Whit works with his assistant Anna, a grad student who is also an empath. Whit has been known to investigate things that can't be explained and when he is asked to look into the disappearance of a wealthy businessman's daughter, he learns there was also another missing girl. Whit and Anna travel to investigate and it leads to more questions and an underground secret society at the college. This was a good story. I liked Whit, he was a different investigator and did things his own way. I liked the relationship between Whit and Anna, they respected each other and he was a great mentor to her. I look forward to reading more books with this pair.
Soo good! I read this book straight through in just a few hours. It was so good. It pulled at my heartstrings. Two girls are missing, but only one is getting attention in the press, because her family has money! Professor Whit Filmore, once a detective, but now a college professor teaching criminal law or something like that, is often called in by the FBI to help out with certain cases. He’s called to Texas, with his student assistant, Anna, to take over this case from the FBI agent previously assigned to it and to help the local PD. They are lead on a twisting turning path of lies and unbelievable truths to find out what REALLY happened to the girls. You won’t believe who is guilty and who is innocent! 🤔
Dead On Time by WL Knightly Unconventional Truth Series Book One
A new mystery series well crafted by WL Knightly. All the intrigue a reader could ask for including a cult of the Iron Covent in a small town in Texas. An FBI agent has called upon a college Professor Filmore to use his former police detective investigative techniques and his strong empath sensitivities to track down two missing college girls. The Professor brings along his college Class Assistant Anna who is trying to test her own empathic sensitivities. This is an engaging read for lovers of crime mysteries. Anxious for the next book!
This series is completely different from previous ones. There is no cliff hanger. Whit, is a criminology professor, former detective and celebrity. He has helped the FBI with cases. He is called to Texas to solve a missing persons case. He brings Anna his assistant, who like him, picks up peoples energy. This case is not straightforward and you know there is do much more going on then initially stared. This was a good whodunit and you may figure out some of the answers before they are revealed. This is an honest voluntary review.
Whit is a criminology professor and Anna is his student/assistant. He is a former detective and sometimes helps on difficult cases. They head from Ohio to Texas to assist on a case where two girls from opposite sides of the creek have gone missing. There is very little cooperation, but Whit and Anna persevere. This is a complete book with a resolution to this case. I really liked Whit and the platonic relationship between the two of them is quite comic at times. Looks like a really good series moving forward. Very enjoyable read!
Two college girls are missing in a small college town in Texas. Former detective and now a college professor, Whit Filmore is asked by an FBI agent to come to help with the case. He takes his student assistant, Anna with him. He and Anna are empaths. One of the missing girls is the daughter of a wealthy and powerful man. The other missing girl is from the poor side of town. I read this in one sitting. I could not put it down.
A new series/book for this author and it doesn’t disappoint. This book is a change from the others by this author as there is a conclusion in this book and it’s not over the course of a few books. I have really enjoyed reading this book and was gripped from the start. Love the plot and twists to go with it. Looking forward to reading more on this series and Whit and Anna solving crimes together. Definitely recommend this book.
This book is different from others by this author because it can be a stand alone. Other books are concluded over the course of several books. That being said, I am still looking forward to reading more in this series. Whit and his assistant Anna are empaths and called in by the FBI to find 2 missing girls. I have really enjoyed reading this book and was gripped from the start. Great plot twists and characters. Definitely recommend this book!
Dead on Time, a new crime series by WL Knightly. Whit and his student/assistant come to Texas for a missing person case. They feel and find that there is more to the story. A manipulative father to unwilling friends. An FBI agent who threw the case away to a local cop with trust issues. A fantastic read. Once you pick this book up, plan nothing else for your day, you won't be able to put it down!
Well I don't know if it is William or Wilma whose is using the name but one thing is for certain. They know how to capture my interest and how to do it in a hurry! This book was an open and shut case. Yes, by error I looked at it on a Saturday morning and then closed it late on Saturday night! Well written. Great character builds. Plot with tremendous twist. Perfect read. And the really good thing, WL Knightly has more books out! There goes the honey do list in our house. :)
A bit whimsical on the looking for disappearing girls. The prof is funny and witty, it was a bit of funny detecting. Not sure what all those women were doing fawning over the professor. Well he had found a a lost boy and became famous...in another book, perhaps? Not sure. It was entertaining and very light. Are there still Covens in universities and also wives take. Into the secret but not allowed to participate. I doubt it, perhaps it was written in another era.
Fantastic read and characters. Storyline is fabulous. A professor in college, used to be with the FBI, but wanted to teach. He was called in to help solve a missing teenager case, so he got his student assistant to go along to help. Lots of clues pop up and on top it’s a double missing teenager case. A definite must read! You have to read to find out all the fantastic read
Too bad all men aren't as honorable as Professor Whit .I think his instincts and feelings, really drive him to see the deception and truth in people. Anna also has the ability to read people in the same way. They never gave up or let others scare them off. All those in secret society should have been brought up on charges. That is the part I didn't like.
