Mei-Ling, the daughter of Clayton Carter's best friend is kidnapped. The ransom demanded of her father, Steve Sweeny, is for footage he shot of a young actress in a scene from a sex film. But unbeknownst to the kidnappers, the footage no longer exists. Therein lies the problem for Steve, Clayton, and the kidnappers. Eventually, Mei-Ling is returned after the kidnappers are persuaded to accept a $1,000,000 ransom. But that leaves Clayton and Steve facing challenges in their pursuit of the kidnappers and the return of the ransom money.
This involves the same character we first met in The Back Forty, Revenge Served Cold. Clayton Carter has now got his PTSD under control and become a successful actor. He hasn't abandoned his sleuthing skills, however, so when the daughter of one of his best friends is kidnapped, he signs on to help find her and track down the bad guys. The story is fast-paced and although a number of people don't have happy ends, the ending is quite satisfying. It was fun for me to recognize a lot of the settings and names... An entertaining read.
interesting whodunit/amateur detective/FBI novel. Never have read a novel where the FBI was so willing to accept the help of amateurs, so that part was a bit difficult, but it held my attention and was a fun read.
