Yancy Lazarus—mage, bluesman, and Hand of Fate—is back from Hell, and the world of the living ain't what it used to be. The Guild of the Staff is broken, his friends are being hunted down, and the pact between the supernatural nations is on the brink of collapse. Someone needs to shoot some sense into people, and if there's one thing Yancy knows about a job well done, it's that you have to do it yourself.
But the ringmaster at the center of this evil clown circus is the Morrigan, the Irish War Walker of Old, and she's cooked up a nasty new ritual that could be the end of humanity. This isn't like the last time she faced Yancy, however. Fueled by both cleansing magic and demonic fire, Yancy and his crew of supernatural misfits are packing more heat than she can handle. A reckoning of epic proportions is coming.

James is a former Marine Corps Sergeant, combat veteran, and pirate hunter (seriously). He’s also a member of The Royal Order of the Shellback—’cause that’s totally a real thing. And a spaceship captain, can’t forget that. Okay … the last one probably isn’t true. When not writing or spending time with family, James occasionally finds time to eat and sleep.
Yancy Lazarus has just returned with his golem friend Levi from their massive battle down in Pandemonium but if he thinks he can now enjoy a bit of relaxed time he is sorely mistaken, seems there is no peace for the wicked. Yancy is immediately thrown back into the fray as he finds that during his time away the Guild of the Staff has been brought down to almost nothing, his friends are being hunted down, and the pact between the supernatural nations is being threatened and about to collapse. The creature behind all the chaos is none other than the Morrigan, an arch enemy of Yancy's and she is preparing a new ritual to bring an end to humanity who she despises. However, this time round Yancy is prepared for her, as he now has inside him two demons and is fuelled by cleansing magic, Viz and demonic fuel, Nox and his crew of supernaturals are all set to bring the Morrigan and the Prophet down. A battle to end all battles is looming on the horizon which if Yancy's team are unable to win would mean that the New Wave and the Eldritch beings would take over. Can Yancy finally rid himself of the Morrigan who wears the face of his beloved girlfriend? I really enjoyed the thrilling book, it was high time the Morrigan and the Prophet, Old Man Winter who had been giving Yancy such a hard time for so many years be brought down and I loved to see the team work so well together putting behind them any past grievances they might have had. However the ending is really no ending at all as there seems to be so much more which Yancy has yet to overcome and betrayal and being used as a pawn by everyone is no fun at all for him.
Okay 2020 has been a pretty crappy year, but Christmas at least was AWESOME! Another installment in the Yancy Lazarus series was released just in time for Christmas and I couldn’t be happier! Yancy, is an Ex-Marine, Smoking, Drinking, Blues Man, Professional Gambler, that happens to be a kick ass battle mage and he’s had more than his fair share of misery and heartache. He always seems to be the outnumbered, underdog fighting for a good outcome in a hopeless situation. How can you not root for him? I love an underdog story where the protagonist is flawed, and has had enough bad luck to remind me of myself. Needless to say, Red Reckoning was just chock full of wicked battles, and magical badassery. This was so well written, the badassery was sprinkled with outright laugh out loud humor, and emotional moments that it dragged me through all the feels. The main antagonist/villain is such a psychotic, narcissistic beyotch that I was totally compelled into hating her and anyone one aiding her. I don’t want to spoil even a moment of this story for anyone so I’ll end my review by saying This book is masterfully written “Urban High Fantasy” and if you enjoy that genre you’ll have really missed out if you don’t read Red Reckoning.
I have been waiting on the next book in the Yancey Lazarus series for so long, but man was it worth the wait! I've enjoyed the series from the start, with each book better than the last, and Red Reckoning reaches new heights. I can't recommend this series highly enough, with Red Reckoning the best so far! The only downside is waiting on the next book!
It keeps coming, book 1/2 were the best by far. The problem with the Lazarus books is power creep. This guy has 3 seals to pull from but loses to one of the 5 vampires. The power levels are all over the place. Some consistency would be nice. Overall I wish the books would have stayed more like the first one and just ditched the idea is the seals.
I was afraid we'd never find out what happened next, but Yancy's back and ready to kick some ass. With some very unlikely companions and some old friends, he has his work cut out for him. This was a great book, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
