With it bucketing down outside, Yvonne heads home to surprise her wife rather than go for her usual lunchtime walk. Only, she’s the one who ends up surprised. Too embarrassed to confront Julie, Yvonne flees with barely a word.
Baffled as to what is bothering Yvonne, and hating the distance between them, Julie sits her wife down and finally gets to the bottom of things. A romantic night away, soaking in a hot tub, takes them down a path neither of them ever could’ve imagined.
Will exploring their options draw them closer together or make them question everything they know?
In 2016, Donna Jay published her first sapphic romance. Since then, she has published eighteen more books, three of which made the number one spot in lesbian fiction.
Her stories feature resilient women, thought-provoking storylines, have plenty of heat, and are all set against the stunning backdrop of her home country, New Zealand.
She also writes sweet romances under the name Diana Jayne.
When she’s not writing, Donna can be found with her nose stuck in a book, or her backside glued to the sofa, binge-watching post-apocalyptic movies.
Another good read from Jay. I’m a big Jay fan. I have read all of her lesfic books and I will continue to do so. What I love about Jay is while her books are mostly erotic-romances, they always involve realism. You don’t feel like you are reading about two characters, you feel like you are reading about two people and no one else really does this as well as Jay does.
While I am putting the erotic romance tag on this, I would more call this a contemporary romance with erotic elements. This is a story about a married couple who are more mature then we normally see. The characters in this story are in their 50’s, which we don’t see much in a book with erotic elements. As someone who reads hundreds of books a year, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate reading a book like this with older women. I crave variety so I appreciate Jay writing a book about some sexy mature women.
I do have to say the book started a little slow for me. Due to some readers being concerned that the book’s blurb meant infidelity, Jay came out and let people know there was no cheating in this book. Unfortunately, because of knowing that spoiler, the drama in the beginning was obvious and it didn’t grip me like it would have otherwise. I understand why Jay did this, not wanting to lose out on any potential readers who would have passed on this thinking it was about infidelity when it’s not. But I can’t help wishing she would have just said screw it and left the spoiler out. The beginning would have been much more gripping for me. Luckily, I did get into the book about a quarter of the way in and enjoyed the rest of it.
Like all of Jay’s books the sex scenes were good and steamy. There were some light BDSM elements, but they were very light. A little spanking and ordering around, but that was about it. As I mentioned above, Jay writes real women so the sex scenes were very believable, not porno style. I also think Jay came up with a configuration I have not read before. I’m no expert on erotica so that may be why but I was surprised to think I read something new to me.
While I can’t say that this was my favorite Jay book, I did really enjoy it. The more I read the more I cared about the characters and got hooked into the story. Between Jay’s realism and her choice to write about characters and a storyline other might shy away from, really appealed to me. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
With a track record of creating original, uniquely different (than the usual cookie cutters), and always provocative stories in all her lesfic books, thusfar, including her last one, "Bitter Sweet Revenge," a brilliantly written story that was starkly personal and emotional, which resonated deeply, I expected nothing less in Donna Jay's latest piece, "Arms Wide Open." Once again, Jay has proven to be a consistent rebel with a cause in the world of lesfic writing, with yet another original and provocative relationship story with a subject matter that's rarely talked about, let alone featured in lesbian romance. Not only did she portray the relationship with realism, the subject matter was weaved into the psyches of the two MCs with grounding authenticity. Needless to say, the story left me totally inspired with eyes wide open in awareness, understanding, appreciation, utter satisfaction! A whole new perspective has been achieved. Truth be told, I've never come across anything like this extraordinarily told story in lesfic before. Bloody well done, Ms. Jay!
Intriguing and an interesting read. How do you revive your intimate sexy moments with your other half after been together for 20 years? Bring a third person in? Hmmm...may not sit well with many couples but that’s what Yvonne and Julie did. This is their journey and how they manoeuvred through it all. The end result... well, let’s just enjoy the ride and keep judgment to yourself...
I loved this book! If you don’t want to read the longer review here’s the short: Characters that you can relate to, steaming love scenes, interesting “relationship issues”, very interesting sexual journey and topped off with a happy ending (pun intended).
It’s very refreshing to read about a couple that have been together for 20 years. What’s also very refreshing is that the couple is 50-ish instead of 20-30-ish. I’m not there, by far, and still really enjoyed this book and could totally relate to the characters.
After reading the blurb I was really curious what Yvonne walked in on and what the outcome would be. I was surprised by both but could also relate to it. Lots of people in relationships can probably relate to it, but it’s rarely talked about because of all kinds of prejudices.
The book shows you a very realistic image of the journey some couples dare to take and explore. How important trust and openness is in a relationship. Also that if you dare to leave your comfort zone and put your prejudices aside, beautiful things can happen.
On a personal note, I found the description off the feeling off emptiness that was left very realistic and the parallel with Christmas very fitting for this experience.
Characters are real human beings with normal jobs, hopes, (unspoken) dreams and (unspoken) fears. They could be you and me, and that’s what helps make this book so good.
Let’s also talk about the steamy parts of the book, because there sure are enough of those. Donna Jay is very good in setting the scene and using the right words to have you hot and bothered just from reading. Yvonne and Julie: sparks fly.
And Donna Jay: yes please, I would love to read a sequel from the other POV.
I'm afraid that this one wasn't for me. I've enjoyed most of Donna Jay's previous work so far, and I knew from others reviews what to expect, but knowing this, I still went on to read it anyway. It's just not my thing..
But It won't put me off reading other Donna Jay books.
I have read several of Donna Jay's romances and this one does not disappoint. It isn't often that an author focuses on MC's in their 50's so I was very happy to see older characters in a romance. I found that I could relate more to these character than I can to say characters in their early 20's. There were a few other things that I really liked. The MCs are fasted with real issues concerning the lack of desire to be intimate for one person while the other's libido is still strong. Also, I liked how Yvonne grows during the course of the book. She is really uptight in the beginning but loosens up as the books progresses. I really liked how Julie was ever so patient with Yvonne. I liked the attraction and the love between Julie and Yvonne. What I especially liked was the sex. WOW. Donna Jay does know how to write a good sex scene (with or without some light BDSM).
There is no cheating in this book! As always, Donna has written a story that touches on a topic you don’t find in many books. Of course it takes place in her home country of New Zealand and she shows us some more of these beautiful islands. I enjoyed this story about older lesbians who find their difference in age is creating some uncomfortable situations involving their bedroom. Yvonne is finding the older she gets she’s losing the need for sexy times, while her wife, Julie, still craves it. An event causes Yvonne to question Julie’s commitment to their vows and it sets in motion a journey to discovery for both women. I know a lot of reader’s may find their method of repairing their sex lives unorthodox, but the way Donna writes the experience is extremely sexy! The secondary characters she introduces are fun and sometimes a bit quirky. They add a fun touch to the story. If you’ve read Donna’s work before, I think you’ll like this new book. If this is the first time you’re reading Donna’s work, you may blush a bit and even squirm in your seat a little! Donna does know how to write a good sex scene! Don’t let that stop you from picking this one up. It’s a good read and I’m so happy to see older lesbians in a book. You know we all aren’t built like Gal Gadot! Enjoy ladies!
I'm going to say something here I never thought I'd get the opportunity to. This book has some of the hottest sex I have ever read and it's about women over 50. Let that sink in. A writer actually acknowledging that middle aged women can still have healthy libidos. *gasp!* That said, it's not just about that - not by a long shot. It is a beautiful, well written story about women very much in love who've been together for decades and what happens when their sexual needs change. Together they decide that they are going to open up their relationship to new experiences. The "together" - the consent - is what allowed this reader to completely buy in to their story. It's about trust. It's about honesty. It's about communication. It has memorable characters, it is funny and heartwarming, body positive and - OOF, it's hot - did I mention?? And it's set in beautiful New Zealand, which makes me want to visit it even more! If you aren't comfortable with sexually explicit material this book isn't for you. But if you are, do give this a go. I loved it - couldn't put it down. It's well worth your money. In fact, I'm appalled it's only $4.99 on Amazon. It really should be more. Would appeal to all ages.
I love the difference Jay brings to her books, whether it’s the odd language (Kiwi-isms), the strong realism in her characters or the unusual circumstances. There’s no guessing what’s going to happen next and it’s probably what I enjoy most.
Yvonne is perimenopausal with a slowing libido, a stressful job and from a conservative background. Her partner of 20 years, Julie, doesn’t have the same stresses but definitely has a much higher libido. Yvonne makes a discovery one day when she comes home at lunch time to surprise Julie. What she sees leaves her reeling and confused.
There is so much more to the story than the above description but the anticipation is partly what makes the story. I love the way Yvonne and Julie communicate and how they work together to see where their relationship will go next. Older characters who act like their age are always a plus for me. I also like that her characters have unusual occupations (I don't have a tag for meter reader).
It is an erotic romance and the sex scenes are really steamy but they are grounded in common sense and good humour. As usual, well worth reading.
A lovely married couple after twenty years is trying to fight the bedroom boredom. Every step in this direction is accompanied by love, care, understanding and fidelity. I like this part of the book. There are only two things that were wet blankets for me. The first one is mentioning the word 'menopause' too often and demonizing it. This stage of life is inevitable. However, it has its charm. Besides, the woman has a brain apart from hormones. The second thing was main characters talking. People should discuss life issues, especially with the loved ones. Nevertheless, after twenty years of cohabitation the communication does not need so many words and details. Probably the characters are those of ‘talkative’ type. Also, the honesty in those conversations can be sometimes painful.
As I enjoy descriptions of domestic married life, I liked less the part of the book when they actually find the means to get rid of the mentioned earlier boredom. Too intense descriptions of hesitance to make a step to enliven their intimate part of life. Those long discussions take away all the fun of exploring different games. Again, too much talking.
All in all, the book is the picturesque entertainment for open-minded readers who experienced a bit of this and that.
I kinda went into this book expecting something completely different when I saw the FFF romance label. But it turned out not too bad.
The writing was good, and the pace was nice. Even though it took me until like 80% of the book to actually like both MCs, I get that it might just be a me thing. I didn’t fully relate to them since they’re in their 50s, and I’m far from that age.
The story is about a married couple having issues with the sexual part of their relationship. They try to spice things up by meeting women to join them for a one-night stand. Without spoilers, I liked the woman who joined them, and I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel from her POV.
If you’re looking for an easy read about a married couple in their 50s trying to reignite their spark, with lots of spice, you might like this one.
Wow! This book had some firsts for me that I unexpectedly enjoyed! Firstly, a couple already together and in love but struggling with intimacy issues. Second adding a 3rd partner to the mix. Very well written. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed a few of Donna Jay’s books. So far they’re hasn’t been repeating dialogs or story lines.
I seem to be delving curiously into bdsm stories. This book is perhaps one of the most recent memorable bdsm read of late and likely the most shocking. I swung between "this is totally unrealistic" to "are you kidding me!". The cover picture doesn't depict the content and regardless of my sentiments on the subject as well as my shock...this was really an entertaining read.
This wasn’t quite what I had expected it to be, but that’s ok because I ended up enjoying it. It was cute, which sounds weird to say about a book marked as erotica, but it was. I thought Julie and Yvonne were fun to read, and good together and their dynamic was really well written. A lot of the time conflicts in books can feel petty, or unnecessary, but the conflict felt genuine in this one. All around a really great story!
I've never read a Donna Jay book before, but right after posting this review, I'll be browsing for another to add to my TBR list. I liked it because of the down to earth writing style about a down to earth, mature married couple, going through a very relatable slump in their long relationship. What do they do to come out of it? (Pardon the pun). Well, that's where the fun and hotness enter. It was refreshing to read a hot story which is not formulaic or gratuitous. It featured middle aged women, in a loving stable relationship, who add some spice, taking care to respect and honour their bond and each others' needs every step of the way. I felt I was taken on an exciting journey along with them, and emerged more open minded. The fact that they're recognisable and likeable MCs, added to my emotional investment. I can highly recommend this book.
There is so much about Arms Wide Open that is wonderful and new, so many subjects and themes that are underrepresented in erotic fantasy, I hardly know where to begin. Donna Jay is an author I always enjoy, and this is no exception.
Julie and Yvonne are a mature, married couple, together for over twenty years, who are dealing with issues of menopause, mismatched libidos, seemingly incompatible fantasies, and growing insecurities. What begins with a misunderstanding when Yvonne pops home for lunch and catches Julie masturbating to a female domination video turns into an honest and heartfelt exploration of fantasies, fetishes, and other partners.
Nothing here is rushed, allowing us to explore the thoughts and emotions behind the relationship before we get into anything intimate. Communication is key to the entire story, and Donna Jay really drives home what a difference it can make in a relationship. We see their love strained by doubts and fears borne of a lack of communication, and strengthened by honest and frank discussion of their sex lives.
There is a little power-exchange play to the story, most of it teasing and tentative, but it is not the fantasy that puts the spark back in their marriage. Instead, it is the exploration of an open marriage and the eventual decision to invite a third woman into their bed. It is not a snap decision, and it is not without consequences. There are a series of false starts and misadventures, some painful and others painfully amusing, but the slow dance between love and lust is an absolute delight.
Arms Wide Open is about more than opening arms - it is about opening minds, imaginations, and bedroom doors. It is character-driven erotic romance, with two women who are just wonderful, and a third who is a delight.
I loved the fact that it was a married couple over 50 and that is was about their relationship and what happens when 1 wants to have sex more that the other. And the difference in the kind of sex they want. And there were a couple of hot scenes in there. But still...it wasn’t totally my book. It’s like something was missing. Maybe I wanted to see more of and with Brenda. I don’t know. 4 stars.
First off, I removed my "rom-lite" tag, as this is possibly the hottest book DJ has written so far.
So our happy f/f couple is getting older and they fear complacency. Distractions from work and family really derail the romance that brought them together. Oh what to do? Sign up to a web dating service that allow for menage. Filter out all the guys, and see who responds. Lots of amusing (and sad) interchanges follow.
And one very hot encounter!
As always, DJ's characters are normal everyday people, looking for love, happiness, and sex, and realizing that these are all different and tangled together. Plus, it's set in New Zealand!
Donna Jay didn’t disappoint, I really enjoyed this story, it had a bit of everything which I loved. Also it was right up there for one of the best erotic scenes I’ve read, very well written. The humour had me laughing and I enjoy the NZ setting. So for me it had it all and I would love to read about Brenda’s POV.
Wonderful book. A great story about growth. Yvonne and Julie reach new heights in their relationship. They find a deeper connection as well. The book also showed that searching for the right person is not always easy. The one point I was not fond of is the constant questioning and reluctance. The book is still well worth 4 stars.
I receive an ARC from the author. I thouroughly enjoyed this story. I loved the main characters and my favorite character by far was Brenda. I hope to read more about her in the future.
“My sex drive has been nearly non-existent. I’m terrified if I don’t find it, I’ll lose you.”
This was fun. Nothing special, but definitely fun. A middle aged lesbian couple going through a rough patch decide to spice things up by potentially looking for a third. The writing was extremely simple, and the author sort of continuously gave details that weren't really needed? Not for atmosphere or setting or plot and characterisation. But it was a nice distracting read with likeable characters and very steamy scenes.
One of the reasons I didn't connect with it so much is totally subjective. I don't really like second-chance romances so much, because what I like in romance is the newness of falling in love. But even in second-chance romances, there's usually some element of the couple having fallen out of love, or breaking up, and then getting back together. There wasn't any of that here. They had a rough patch, but they were together and pretty much happy for the entire story, and it was lovely, I definitely don't need a lot of angst or anything, but, IDK. For me, the best part of reading romance is seeing two people fall in love! Yvonne and Julie were never really out of love.
But yeah, that's totally subjective. Otherwise, it was a fun time.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book since I read it 3 times. It was such a treat reading a book that involved a couple in my age group. A couple that weren't perfect, who loved each so much they have been together longer than most people think is possible and they are willing to talk to each other, with a bit of nudging to put their relationship back on track.
If the possibility of a ruined marriage was heading your way because of how you were feeling, and not knowing how to fix it what would you do? How do you put the spark back into your relationship? You do something so different that no one would ever believe you if you told them.
These two very relatable characters who built a love that has carried them through 20 yrs of marriage found a very different way to open themselves up to each other. To understand that they don't need to be perfect they just need to talk, and most of all listen. That they just need to be who they are and love each other. To just have fun.
Read the book. You won't regret it. It is fun, engaging and is worth the time.
Oh lordy, a wonderful story about all the insecurities that come with growing older with someone. Discovering new and exciting things about one’s own sexuality and preconceived ideas about love, trust, and romance, and how to keep love alive. Her characters are well developed and her scenarios are nothing less than heart-wrenching, loving, stimulating, and laugh-out-loud hilarious. I challenge you not to laugh aloud at the humor Jay offers up throughout this story…and there are a few that had me doubling over. I found the story truly entertaining from the first word to the last…and even saw a bit of myself in some of the characters. I never give spoilers, that anyone knows. With that said, it is good to have stories that are inclusive of women of older age groups who are sexy, and stories that are not afraid of the ‘menopausal woman’. I think your emotions will run the gamut between sadness, laughter, love, and desire…and more. I don’t think it will matter what age you are, this is a story in which you will be entertained. Great characters, a story full of surprises, drama, fun, and humor. What more could you want!
This story was wonderfully written and very enjoyable. It made me wonder why in a 35 year relationship we never thought about doing something like that to enhance our enjoyment. Yvonne and Julie were well described as a loving married couple who were experiencing menopause and the related problem of lack of sexual drive. The writer either interviewed couples experiencing this occurrence or maybe expended a similar situation. Whichever it was the story identified the problem to a t. Bringing in someone else was a stroke of genius, fortunately in the book it finally worked out for all participants concerned. The theme was one that is not often identified nor acknowledged by many writers. Glad this author took the time to write such a wonderful story.
This book was relatable on some levels and the making of fantasy on others. An oh my what fantasies they are.[fanning oneself]. The issues of being in a loving but long term relationship are explored in this book. The characters are in mid life. The way the communications open show the importance of that in any relationship. Of course one of their solutions was VERY steamy. I love Jay's insight into relationships. I will also reiterate THERE IS NOT CHEATING IN THIS BOOK!
Four stars for the subject matter alone -- it's brave to tackle this topic in general but to thrown in an older, long-term couple is genius. I thought the subject matter was handled in a creative and interesting way. The only reason I withhold the fifth star is that I felt like there was some rambling in several places that I skipped over. And the book could've benefited from a round of editing.
Thanks to the author for letting me read this, and I also would like to read from Brenda's POV.
