Harper: My year is off to a terrible start. Fired from my job and dumped by my boss-boyfriend at the same time (lesson learned the hard way, don’t even start), I’m forced to adopt the ‘New Year, New You’ mantra whether I want to or not. The only silver lining is a rundown old house my estranged aunt left to me in Starlight Bay, Massachusetts.
That is, until I run head-on—literally—into Jackson Montgomery, local hometown superstar and the best contractor in town. He offers to help with renovations so I can rent it as a side hustle once I find a job and move back to Boston. Unfortunately, he does not offer to date me, which is a crying shame because he’s exactly what I didn’t know I was looking for.
Jackson: I’ve never made a New Year’s resolution until this year. Why? Because 99.9% of people break them within six weeks. But after my girlfriend cheated on me with my (ex-) best friend, I knew I had to do it. Give up dating for at least a year, but maybe the rest of adulthood.
What I hadn’t counted on was meeting Harper, a perky city girl just begging to be kissed. Fixing up her late aunt’s house was proving to be a bigger job than I could handle in the feelings department and I didn’t like it one little bit. I just needed to get her fixer-upper fixed so she could get out of Starlight Bay before something happened I couldn’t repair with a hammer and some nails.
NEW YEAR’S RENOVATIONS is a standalone, small-town steamy romance novella destined to give you all the feels!
Super cute and sweet but I like my men to go for what they want. Was heading for a 4-5 star until she had to run after him. Girls chasing guys? Not my jam.

New Year’s Renovation is a fun novella. Harper is newly single and found out she inherited an estate from an aunt she never met in a town she has never heard of. Jackson left his professional hockey career to move to Starlight Bay when his mom got sick, now he is running the family construction company with his brother.
Harper and Jackson had an instant connection and I loved it. He was hired to renovate the home she inherited and now they are working together. There were plenty of times I was laughing, I was swoony and just smiling.
If HGTV and Hallmark were to ever create a home reno show New Year’s Renovation would be it! If you’re looking for a quick, fun read this is one to check out!
A fun and sweet novella. I really enjoyed Harper and Jackson's story. I enjoyed their banter and the push and pull between these two. Even though they feel the sparks between them, both are trying hard to resist it because of their past. They fall hard and fast and get their own HEA. This is the first book I’ve read by the author, and I’m looking forward to reading more from her.
Harper and Jackson are a great start to the Starlight Bay and Man of the Month Club series. Harper is a TV personality that has just found herself newly single and yes jobless. She made the poor choice of dating her producer boss. Just when all seems lost an unexpected surprise leaves her the new owner of a run down Victorian home and in desperate need of a contractor. The handsome Jackson Montgomery is just the man I mean contractor she needs. Jackson is a retired NHL player that is back to help run the family contracting business. He is not looking for love and has kind of sworn off dating until he literally runs into the lovely Harper. She has just inherited the local and very cumbersome eyesore in town. The pull is immediate but he is ready to fight that feeling! This is a sweet, funny sexy novella giving two people that are not looking for love a change in plans and quite a different direction than either one ever saw coming. The sweet waterfront town of Starlight has some interesting plans for them! ~~Michele McMullen ~~
What a great story! I read this in about an hour, so it's a fantastic afternoon cuddle read.
Harper and Jackson are just perfect for each other and they both want a lot of the same things. Harper is a big city TV anchor that just lost her job and inherited a family estate that she has to move to Starlight Bay to fix up. Jackson is the resident contractor and also a complete hottie with a heart and body to melt you in all the right places!
I really enjoyed the quick pace and comfort of this story. The characters were well developed and rounded with background, emotion and lots of heart. Small town romance will always own my heart and this was a great kick off to the Man of the Month series!
New Year’s Renovation was a quick and fun read to start the new year off with. Added bonus is that it kicks off a 12 book series set in Starlight Bay. Each month will be written by a different author.
Ms. Kendrick is a new author to me, but I greatly enjoyed her writing style.
New Year’s Renovation is the story of Harper Fitzpatrick, who used to be an on air personality for a news station in Boston until her boss/boyfriend breaks up with her while firing her. In the midst of Harper’s self pity and reevaluation of her life, an unexpected letter arrives. It seems that an unknown and recently deceased family member has left a property to Harper.
Harper decides to check out her inheritance, assess what needs to be done to it and use it as a rental property.
Fortuitously, Harper happens to run into (actually runs right into) Jackson Montgomery, ex NHL legend, recent ex to a girl who slept with his also newly ex best friend and current renovation and master builder in Starlight Bay.
During this meeting there are definite sparks, yet both of this newly burned and hurt humans chose to ignore them.
Our plot digs Harper deeper into Starlight Bay as her inherited home is way out of DIY range and well into “we need a plan” renovations. As you can guess, Jackson becomes Harper’s renovation project manager.
Working together and watching Harper job search starts to bring these two closer together. Both having gotten out of relationships where the ending was harsh and unforeseen has shaken their confidence and trust in relationships. Jackson is additional skittish of Harper as she makes it clear that she’ll be leaving Starlight Bay as soon as the work is done and she can list the rental. Jackson has recently moved home to Starlight Bay. Retiring from the NHL while still a healthy and viable player, Jackson doesn’t look back as he comes home to help care for an ailing mother, start up his construction business, and settle back into “home”. Jackson is here to stay.
Regardless our two anti trusting in love people have a near hookup miss courtesy of Jackson’s brother, an explanation a few days later from Logan to Harper regarding WHY Jackson is so relationship wary. Harper swears to herself that she’ll keep her feelings for Jackson on the professional side only.
Of course, being in a Cape Cod like setting, and winter being an actual living beast of a thing in this part of the world, a Nor’easter comes along to strand these two together for two days and well....fireworks!
Of course there comes a point where there is a miscommunication between our duo and both react in opposite extremes based purely on their last go round in love. What I did like was that rather than both storming off to separate areas of the world, they each cool off separately, take in some advice from solid people and rather quickly come back to each other to have an actual discussion.
It’s rare to find a book that jumps on healthy communication and willingness to admit flaws and shortcomings so quickly. Usually there will be a stubborn phase to drag out the tension. Additionally refreshing is that each one owned their own mistakes, assumptions, and faults. They also both apologized. Again, not a common theme in most books.
This read was one of my first for 2021 and I loved it. The characters don’t necessarily “grow” because of their relationship, there is more “learning and listening”. A lot of the plot lies on communication and trust. The plot is mostly very low tension and low angst. The steam factor is balanced nicely with mutual respect for each other. The main side character interaction comes from Jackson’s brother Logan - who winds up helping and supporting both main characters.
Additionally, on a personal “bonus” note, Starlight Bay seems to be written as if it’s based in the Cape acid area. A place that I’m very familiar with and extremely fond of. Reading this book felt just a little bit like reading a book set in my hometown.
All the thumbs up to New Years Renovations for a quiet, thoughtful, cozy winter read with just the right about of steamy to make the book pop.
Starlight Bay and the Man of the Month Club is set to be a really great sizzling hot new series if this first book in the series in anything to go by. I loved it!
This was a panty melting quick enjoyable read that had everything to start your New Year of just right.
Harper gets left a house in Starlight Bay, a place she had never heard of by an Aunt she never even knew she had; but it came just at the right time, dumped by her boyfriend and also her boss at Channel 5 news in which she was an anchor getting out of the city to regroup came just at the right time.
Ex NHL player Jackson Montgomery came home to Starlight Bay when his mom got sick and died the year before now he is running with his brother his dads construction company, unlucky in love after catching his best friend with his girlfriend, he made a bet with his brother on News Year Eve of no entanglements this year.
Well that lasted really well once he bumped into Harper.
Follow Harper and Jackson on this quick enjoyable read - you won't be disappointed.
I have to say that after reading New Year's Renovations, I'm super excited about this new Man of the Month Club series. So, Harper kicks all off with needing to getting away after a breakup really blows her life up which is how she found herself in Starlight Bay since she was left a rundown house that her estranged aunt leaves her. It also brings her the first man of the month, Jackson, into her sights as he's not only super sexy, but also the best contractor in town & she just so happens to legit run into him. They have serious chemistry but there's one big complication. See, his heart was broken from his last relationship so he's decided to scrap dating for the year. You can only imagine the fun push & pull from there until you hit those one click buttons to experience it instead! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Harper is having a terrible time of it. She gets fired from her job. The good news? Her estranged Aunt has left her a house. It's creepy, but with renovations it could be amazing. What's amazing is this hot contractor she bumped into, Jackson. He's going to help her with the reno. And ladies, Jackson is the ideal man. He's hard-working, attractive, and kind. Harper isn't sure if she wants to start something and she hasn't been able to find another job. You'll have to read it to find out what happens. This is a super-cute and sweet story. I loved Jackson, if you couldn't guess! This was such a great way to end the year we've had. Kendrick wrote the perfect slow-burn novella. You'll love it! 4.5 stars
Welcome to the Man of the Month Club! We hope you love book boyfriends because you can meet a new Starlight Bay hottie on the first of every month. The book boyfriend is Jackson Montgomery, former NHL player and now contractor in the small town of Starlight Bay. While at city hall, he meets Harper Fitzpatrick who is town to see a house her Aunt left her. The two have an instant connection and she hires him to reno her house.
This was a cute, short read. It had some laughs, heat and heart. I’m looking forward to the other 11 books in the series. I’m ready to discover 11 new authors this year.
This is a quick insta-love story. Harper is making some changes after losing her job and boyfriend in one shot. Jackson is a former NHL player who is coming off a rough year and nasty break up. Neither is looking for a relationship, just trying to start the new year off clean. Harper finds herself needing to renovate a old house she fell into, and Jackson just happens to be a contractor. One thing leads to another, and bam, new life, new jobs and new love. This is a short and sweet story with a little heat, and a classic miscommunication drama that makes you wonder if it all works out. Spoiler alert this is a HEA!
What a sweet start to your new year? Pick up this novella from Kara Kendrick. New Year's Renovations has a handsome retired hockey pro hero who is now doing renovation work in his hometown. Harper, our heroine, is jobless and looking for a new start. With her deceased aunt leaving her a wonderful old house in need of much work Harper and Jackson meet and agree to renovate the home. From there, the story takes us on the journey of their romance and happily ever after. New Year's Renovations is a sweet beginning to what is apparently going to be a series of novellas for each month of the year. If this one is any indication of the novellas' quality, it should be a fun and enjoyable series.
This was a quick and fun read! Harper doesn’t know what hit when she lost her job and her boyfriend. Replaced with a newer model. When she finds out she inherited a relative’s estate, maybe her karma is turning around. Because things start falling into place when she arrives in Starlight Bay. Meeting Jackson was icing on the cake!
This book was a great introduction to this series and a great way to start out the new year! I can’t wait to see how the series plays out and I looks forward to meeting other characters.
I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.
This book ended way too soon.. I wish there was more! I can’t wait to meet the rest of the Starlight Bay series.
Hockey star turned carpenter/construction worker = yummy! 🤤 Harper & Jackson are a great couple to start this series off, they are hot & sweet together. Add in Jackson’s brother and Harper’s mom for a few pivotal moments too for more detail/background on each of their family life and it was a perfect read!
Read it all in a couple of hours, didn’t want to put it down, will definitely be reading more of Kara Kendrick 😃🥰
Sometimes, life is just like a home renovation: Out with the old, in with the new. And that’s exactly the way Harper’s life is going, ending her year with a fizzle! But then there’s the actual renovation project, which starts her New Year off with a bit of a sizzle, also known in Starlight Bay as Jackson Montgomery. All bets are off in this well written short, sweet and steamy read.
This is the first Kara Kendrick book I’ve read, and I’m very much looking forward to reading more from her.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am leaving my honest review.
New Year’s Renovations is a quick and easy romance read. On the heels of a bad breakup Harper isn’t looking for love. What she needs is a job because her ex was also her boss. Not good. Jackson is also team single after catching his girlfriend and best friend doing the dirty. But how can you stay single when you meet someone that melts your butter? Harper and Jackson try hard to resist the pull that is between them but ultimately give into it. They fall hard and fast and get the happily ever after they deserve. TBR and Enjoy this read in one sitting novella.
Harper and Jackson are perfect for each other. Harper was let go of her news anchor job by her ex boyfriend producer. She inherits a rundown house and when she goes to city hall she runs into Jackson. They hit it off and plus he's a contractor so he does the renovations on the house. Of course things get complicated. Then of course things get straightened out and this book makes you end up smiling and waiting for the next Man of the Month club book. Can't wait!! Very fun read and highly recommended!!!
This was a very good and sweet story. It’s about Harper, who just broke up with her boyfriend and Jackson, whose wish is not to date any one in the new year.
They had one of the most short yet not less beautiful stories I've read and what I loved the most is that there wasn’t any kind of extra drama. It was a fun, sweet, amazing story to start this 2021 with.
If you have a crush on your favorite HGTV host, this is the book for you! A wintry small town setting, a quirky career woman, a hunky contractor, and a home in need of repairs. Throw in some spicy love scenes, and it’s home remodeling show fantasy perfection! Kara Kendrick uses her fun and quippy writing style to make this romp sure to help you on your way to that “read more books” New Years Resolution of your own!
This was my first Kara Kendrick's book, and won't be my last. This a sweet romance, perfect for the New Year! Jackson and Harper are both great characters. Their journey to love is funny, sexy and romantic. Jackson is handsome and supportive. Harper is lovely and smart. They are perfect together. Looking forward for more books written by this author.
Jackson and Harper’s story broke my heart kind of. These two went through a lot to get to where they were. It was sweet slow burn romance. I loved their chemistry and banter! They tried to deny the pull but sometimes it’s just to strong! Definitely a happy sweet little read! Can’t wait to read more!
This is a quick hit love story! It follows Harper - a broadcast journalist who has just lost her job and her boyfriend and who inherits a house from her great aunt. She heads to Starlight Bay and literally runs into Jackson - the super hot xNHL player turned contracter - and story goes from there. If you would like a quick pick me up feel good love story, check this one out!
Harper and Jackson are HOT HOT HOT!! Harper is a city girl who inherits a house in the small town of Starlight Bay. Jackson is the contractor she hires to fix up the old home. There is instant chemistry but why future can they have when she’s just passing through and he’s a small town man at heart. This is a great read with wonderful characters and an HEA.
This was a quick and easy read. Jackson and Harper were a cute and fun couple to read. I love that the story was set against a home Reno, and my only complaint was that the story ended! Would love more of Jackson and Harper!
She lost her job in broadcasting but gained so much more! Kara Kendrick shows us that even when life knocks us down it will lift us back up and usually give us better than we had. Such a lovely way to spend a few hours on a rainy afternoon!!
ABOUT THIS BOOK Title: New Year's Renovations Series: Starlight Bay #1 (standalone) Author: Kara Kendrick POV: 1st person, dual Cliffhanger: HEA: Triggers:
Spice? On a swooningly delicious level.
Angst? Zero, zip, zilch, nada.
REVIEW This was a short, quick and sweet read. Just what I wanted and needed right now. I 100% recommend it if you want a short instalove story you can read in one sitting. You might start contemplating renovating your house tho, just because of the (slim) chance a hot-ass Jackson Montgomery ends up being the contractor.
I’m not too crazy about instalove, but Kara managed to make the love story kinda realistic, so I’m giving this book 3 stars. A person who’s more into instalove would probably give it 4 stars, because the premise of the novella is really intriguing, and the novella is well-written.
If you’re looking for a short read about a heroine who’s new to town and a hero who can’t help his attraction to her, despite his decision to lay off women and dating for a while, then this is definitely what you want to read.

Jackson and Harper run into each other at the Town Hall. Harper finds out Jackson is a contractor when he gives her his card. Harper just inherit her aunts home and it needs some work done to it before she can rent it out. After a long day they run into each other at Big Chowder. She talks to him about doing the renovations on her aunts home. They agree to meet the next morning so he can look over the house. Jackson comes over and he inspects the house and tells her what she needs. Harper works with Jackson on the renovations during the day, at night she looks for a job. She was just let go as news anchor where her ex-boyfriend works. Jackson and Harper make plans to go to Starlight Pi. They enjoy themselves at dinner, then head to the beach. She begins to kiss him while walking on the beach. Then he tells her he wants to take her to his house and she agrees. As they start to undress each other they get a knock on his door. Logan comes over and wants to know if he can stay the night. So Jackson takes Harper home. The next day he tells her they need to shut off the water, she gathers her things and heads to town. Headed to the coffee shop, she sets her things out and then sees Logan approach her. Logan tells her about the bad year Jackson just had and he doesn’t want to see his brother hurt. A blizzard warning comes in so Jackson sends all his workers home. He insists Harper comes to his house to stay. They make supper together and talk while they eat. Afterwords he starts to kiss her, she tries to pull away but can’t. He takes her to his bedroom and they begin kissing. They begin to undress and get physical. The next morning they start all over again, they can’t go out because of the blizzard. It last for two full days. They head back to the house to check on it. Jackson asks her if she wants to start seeing each other and she tells him she would like to. Jackson gets an offer for Harper but doesn’t tell her yet he’s waiting for the perfect time. When he goes to look for her he overhears her talking to her ex-boyfriend Clark on the phone. She tells him she doesn’t want to come back to work like nothing ever happened. They get into an argument about her not being able to find a job and there's nothing in Starlight Bay for her. Jackson take offense to that and tells her to go back to Boston. Harper heads upstairs and packs her bags. She ends up back at the coffee shop, finding Logan again. He tells her about the job offer Jackson got for them renovating homes for television. When she realizes the conversation Jackson probably overhear she heads back to him. She tells him she is sorry and never meant to hurt him. He tells her he is sorry he overreacted. She tells him she loves it here and loves him. He tells her he loves her too. He tells her about the job offer he received and she tells him it’s the best news she’s had all year. The show was a huge hit and Jackson asked her to move in with him.
