A hilarious love story featuring an overdramatic city boy and an incomparable girl from the country.
In an attempt to knock out the long-awaited follow-up to his best-selling first novel, Alexander Jones lets his best friend convince him that trekking into the wilderness for a survival boot camp was the only way to get the creative juices flowing.
With the help of a detailed itinerary, Luke, and Luke's childhood friend, Penny, they’d committed 10 days to help Alex forgo his Urbanite roots and embrace the countryside.
It took a lifetime to get to the mountains where Luke and Penny had camped as kids, and only a second for Alex to know he was out of his element.
In a surprising twist of fate, it also took 10 days for him to fall in love with Penny Foster. The question was, did Penny feel the same way, and what would Luke say when he found out?
“10 Days” by K.J. Holliday is an entertaining and easy romantic comedy.
Alexander is a writer with a writer’s block. So, a ten day camping trip was to give a change of environment in order to help. Now the fun starts goofing around fairly mild teasing along with a bit of drama. And lots of sex!
The plotline was weak and scattered. Also, the writing was choppy at times. If the author had spent as much time on the plot as with the details of sex, I could have rated higher.

Best selling author Alexander Jones is in the middle of writing his second novel and is struggling with writers block. In an attempt to help Alex to move past this, his best friend Luke and Luke's childhood friend Penny convince him to take a camping trip into the wilderness for 10 days.
An Urbanite at heart, Alex doesn't know anything about camping and quickly discovers that he is out of his depth.
Though there is one good thing about this trip, Penny. This 10 day trip will bring Alex's feelings to the surface. Will Penny feel the same? How will they tell Luke if she does?
What I liked about this book
The camping theme was refreshing. I've read a lot of romance/rom-coms but 10 Day is the first that I've read with this theme.
I enjoyed the wilderness survival information that is laced throughout the book it was informative and well researched.
Alex and Penny's romance was believable and relatable.
10 Days is told completely from Alex's perspective. I find that, when is comes romance books that feature non LGBT couples, the narrative is normally from the woman's perspective or both.
What I didn't like
Some of the phrases used made me cringe and came across forced.
10 days is an entertaining read that would appeal to readers who enjoy contemporary romance novels. Readers should be aware that this book contains content which is unsuitable for those under 18.
It is definitely an easy, fun read with relatable, amicable characters. I liked the setting in the nature and the storytelling from Alex, someone who was both stupid and charming during his survival mode while camping with his friend, Luke, and his love interest, Penny. I also liked the cover design very much and I can recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy-to-read, light romance story.

Can 10 days, a journey into the woods, and a tent bring to light what years of friendship by proximity couldn’t?
Alex Jones, author, self-depreciation champ, and city boy to the core is willing to endure a lot to write a quality novel—even the outdoors. He’s bit by the bug of a story idea, but he needs some first hand knowledge in survivalism and handling the elements to do it justice. Enter his best friend, Luke, and best friend’s best friend, Penny. The three set off on a trip to Luke and Penny’s favorite childhood camping spot to teach Alex all the essentials they know. From the very beginning it becomes pretty obvious that Alex has a heaping helping of denial when it comes to Penny and his feelings (and attraction) to her. Their friendship, chemistry, and romance is more welcome, comforting, and hot than a campfire on a cool night.
I really enjoyed the characters. Alex is battles his own demons, ones of self worth which I definitely identify with, but he’s wry, smart mouthed, sarcastic, intelligent, and sweet. Penny is a damn gem. Who wouldn’t adore her? I definitely did. She is a hell of a woman—capable of great things, competent, funny, giving, loyal, knowledgeable. Even Luke is a lovely best friend and person. And let me lay it down right now—a predictable love triangle? We don’t know her. Not in this book.
The romance may cover only 10 Days but Penny and Alex have been friends far longer. This definitely didn’t feel out of the blue or like insta-love. It felt like a slow and natural coming together that I loved so much. And any romance reader worth their salt will see these two are meant to be!
I found myself devouring this story in no time. It’s a fun, quick, romantic, and STEAMY read. Let me tell you—KJ Holliday knows how to write smut. Hot damn.
These are the kind of sexy scenes I want in my books. Once they started I couldn’t get enough and KJ DELIVERED. They were a lightning storm leading to a damn forest fire of hotness. Seriously. Wow. Loved it.
The whole story comes together in such a wonderful way. I finished it super satisfied and pleased as a peach. I smiled. I awwwwed. I sweated. I sprayed myself with a squirt bottle to cool down. And I got all up in my feels. The whole journey was truly a delight and I HIGHLY recommend it. If you enjoy romance with a healthy helping of hotness? KJ Holliday is definitely an author to keep your eye on.
I received an ARC of 10 Days in exchange for an honest review.
Someone else reviewed that this book has no plot and I was like “surely that can’t be true.” It’s spot on. It has no conflict. No rising action. Characters aren’t really built, they just have names and sometimes (rarely) talk. This book was sex scenes interspersed between survival guide tips. “What are we doing today?” “Fishing.” Night time: sex. Next day: “What are we doing today?” “Gathering berries.” Never mind the fact that the aforementioned sex is happening feet away from their unsuspecting friend. Anyone turned on by the risk of being discovered and semi-public sex: this one is for you. Backstory was hinted at or info dumped. His history of growing up with a gang lord for a father was this weird footnote. Not any significant plot device. At one point, someone dies, and you can tell this is supposed to be a shock, or pivotal but you literally cannot care because who the fuck even is this guy? Oh don’t worry, it’ll be told to you in a chunk of exposition at the start of the next scene. Because that’s how to make something impactful—explain it after the fact. Sad thing is, some of the lines are great. There is some decent writing and innate talent—it’s just wrapped up in a massive misunderstanding of story structure and plot. Which is ironic because the narrator is a writer himself. Maybe he could give the author tips.
Very first thing, naming the lead character Alex Jones was a truly terrible idea, I'm actually shocked an editor let that happen. If you don't know who he is, be grateful, but a quick google search should have swayed someone away from that immediately. This book was one that suffered from trying too hard to be funny, imo. 80% of Alex's thoughts were jokes or sarcasm or quips-- some of them were good, but it definitely needed to be toned down. The fact that Alex was a writer and went on a 10 day research trip and didn't bring any kind of notebook was truly mind boggling. I get wanting to show that Penny was prepared by having it... but it just didn't make sense. And the drama at the end felt a bit forced and didn't blend with the rest of the story much. I feel like this really could have been great- I love the camping concept- but it was just poorly executed.

This book had me from page one. It is funny, charming, sarcastic, romantic, and steamy. Everything I look for in a romance novel!
I smiled, laughed, rolled my eyes, cheered, wanted to smack people, and yelled out lout to the characters.
I would have read it all in one sitting if I could have. I read it in four. I tried to only read a little bit at a time so I could spend more time with the characters, but I got too absorbed in their world and couldn't stop reading. I will for sure be reading this again!
Alexander Jones is a writer and for his new book needs to learn some survival skills for his character. Alex’s best friend Luke and Luke’s best friend Penny take him camping to help him learn a few things.
Alex is not really an outdoor person. He didn’t really like the idea of camping, but he still went because he is dedicated to his book and readers. He feels that without experiencing a situation then writing it, felt fake to him sometimes. His character is simple. He is straight forward, has a little dark, gang related backstory that doesn’t really affect his personality that much, but also because of this he can’t be with his family, whom he hasn’t seen in a long time since they went into witness protection. I really love his sensitive, sarcastic demeanour. It was one of the things that made this book really enjoyable.
Like Alex pointed out Penny is a saint. She is excessively caring; always looks out for the ones she cares about. She is a smart, accomplished journalist for the Ney York Times. She does so much for everyone without complaint, and she is not appreciated for them. She is taken for granted. Her family, especially her mother always tries to make her life hell, always criticising her and this pressure sometimes becomes too much for her.
I’m not a big fan of friends to lovers trope but this one is really cute and adorable. Alex sees Penny how much she does, how much she cares. He tires to help her in every way he can, he values her, acknowledges her, respects her. The way they started with accidental cuddling while sleeping—Alex did it—it was so cute and of course it happened again; and Penny liked it. Their relationship blooming throughout the trip was so sweet. After, suddenly cutting the trip short because of a death in Penny’s family, Alex gave all of his support to her and helped her deal with her overbearing family.
I have read books written completely from the male protagonist’s POV before but not a rom-com. This was definitely a great experience. I loved the easy-going plot in addition to it being so funny. I was laughing so hard at Alex’s sarcastic and goofy behaviour. I had such a good time reading it. I gobbled it up fast, I just couldn’t put it down.

Alex is a best selling author currently working on his latest novel about an outdoor survivalist. In an attempt to help his creativity flow, his best friend, Luke, convinces him to go camping into the wilderness with him and his childhood friend, Penny. Over the course of 10 days, Alex realises he’s in love with Penny, but does Penny feel the same?
“Harry Potter didn’t sacrifice himself at the Battle of Hogwarts for people like Penny Foster to feel inadequate.”
Alex is hilarious, and I relate so much to his lack of camping experience. His inner monologues are just so well written (I loved the *spoiler alerts*), I couldn’t help but love him instantly!
“How did he end up here? Taking a massive bath with another male in tepid water. It all sounded really, really gross.”
Luke is a great teacher for Alex (I may have learned a good few things as well), but it’s Penny who takes the lead with the wilderness lessons. As we get more into the book, we learn more about the characters’ backstories, which are heart-wrenching.
This book was such a fun quick read! It’s sweet, exciting, funny, emotional, oh and the smut… let’s just say, things get hot. I didn’t want it to end, but I can’t wait to read more of KJ Holliday’s work!
I absolutely adored this book! When Alex, an author, begins writing a book about an outdoor survivalist, his best friend, Luke, offers to take him hardcore camping! Luke brings along his female best friend, Penny, and things get interesting—trying to teach a city boy about the woods while sharing the tight quarters of a tent! I really enjoyed reading as this story unfolded. It was sweet, believable, and made me feel like I was along for the trip. Exactly what you’d want in a book...sweet, funny, steamy, a little excitement, and leaves you wanting more! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was such a fun and light romance read filled with laugh out loud moments. The characters were all extremely relatable and I found myself quickly invested in their story! I loved how Alex and Penny really seemed to balance each other out. The story is told from Alex’s perspective which I thought really added something special and different to the story since more often than not romances are told from the female love interests perspective. It was also just really fun to read the story through Alex’s perspective and hear his inner thoughts throughout the camping trip because they were often filled with humour and sarcasm which I absolutely loved.
I definitely would recommend this if you’re a fan or romcoms or if you’re just in the mood for a nice light read!
This is a cute romance story that has a touch of humor to it. This is a well written story about a city boy and a country girl. This story will show you how much things could change if just given 10 days. Alex has given himself 10 days to embrace the country. His friends including a girl named Penny are determined to help him with this. Will Alex and Penny find themselves embracing more than something out of their element? They made the story fun to read and entertaining. I laughed a couple of times out loud at them. They made the story for me. I highly recommend reading this book.
This was such a fun and quick romance read. It gave me all the feel-good vibes.
The characters were very relatable. I enjoyed Alex's inner monologues - he is hilarious. And Penny...oh, she's too good for this world. Such a sweetheart.
Though this may seem like a fluffy romance on the surface, there was a lot of depth to the characters and how their past has shaped them into the people they are now. It was well done!
This was a sexy and steamy read without getting uncomfortably graphic. There was interesting character growth and story development. I loved how the characters supported each other and showed strong understanding and care for each other. This book is a good story to cuddle in front of a fire with when you just want to relax.

KJ Holliday is a new author for me. I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end. I can relate to a few things when it comes to the outdoors and camping style, but no way I am tent type of girl. This book was romantic, funny, steamy and had some seriousness as well. The characters were perfectly designed and entwined in the story so easy. I highly recommend this book.
KJ Holiday was a new author to me but after seeing a few blurbs and teasers I knew it would be right up my alley for a lighthearted and funny romantic read. It did not disappoint and I found myself reading this quickly and sad when the story came to a conclusion. Holiday has a knack for writing some witty and laugh out loud scenes that will make any reader love these characters and the story they have to share. I couldn’t get enough of Alex and Penny and the sidekick friend Luke.
“First of all, f@*k tents.”
This line had me spitting out my diet pepsi, cause same lol. I love camping or the outdoors but not tents, tents are the devil and I have plenty of awful experiences with them to say I’m good never again. Alex really needs the experience though to help him with his latest writing endeavor and is dragged to the mountains to live it all. Penny throws in a plot twist when he discovers he loves her, but will Penny accept the advances and the idea of a romance with him? For that you will have to read to find out. I can’t wait to see what else is available from KJ Holiday in the near future!
Alex is a novel writer working on a book about an ex-Armed Forces member who spends time off the grid in hiding. In order to gain an understanding of what this would be like his college friend, Luke, and Luke's best friend, Penny, take him backwoods camping. While learning to set up camps, hunt, gather, etc. Alex finds himself further endeared to Penny as she guides and cares for him. When Alex unconsciously finds himself spooning Penny night after night in their group shared tent he finds himself pursuing Penny romantically.
Alex comes off as a bit of a pompous git from the start, he's constantly talking about his accolades. Generally a character like this would be overly confident and suave but Alex is a self-conscious, oddly stupid, and has the grace of a baby goat. This sounds charming but I just found myself more annoyed with him than anything. He's constantly whining, and he acts like a scholar but throws a fit over a compass acting like he’s never heard of one. How is that even possible?
I appreciate that the author was trying to show us the chemistry between Penny and Alex, work up to Alex's thoughtful moments and his romantic revelation, but the camping trip drags so much. The story is decent, but I think it needs more polishing. Particularly in the camping arena (quality over quantity) and the Rosewood estate situation (are they supposed to be like a family from a V.C. Andrews book? I would probably eliminate the family stuff and focus more on how Penny handles stress unless you plan on expanding on the family portions).
Penny apparently comes from a "troubled" family and I do like how worked up Alex gets about her being treated right. But I also don’t know if I fully understood where her plight stemmed from. Moms who say awful things are a fairly normal dilemma, and I failed to understand why Penny’s family was so looney. Other than to act as a balance to Alex's family problems.
Luke felt like a plot device more than a character. I can’t even remember what he does for work (I even went back and tried to figure it out but found no indication of what he does, other than that he studied music and his dad built him a garage studio?). He seemed to exist solely as an excuse for Penny to be a part of the trip, to keep the sexual tension going by acting as an unwitting buffer, and to pose a potential conflict when Penny and Alex are outed.
I thought 10 Days was probably well-outlined out by the author, I can see where we move from points A through Z, but it lacked depth and sense at times. I didn’t feel a connection to the characters. I loved the pop culture references, the geek is strong in this one, Harry Potter references are always a plus.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
10 Days tells the story of Alex, orphan by default, author by trade. This city boy needs helping understanding the great outdoors to properly write his second novel. His best friend Luke along with Luke's childhood friend Penny are perfectly equipped to teach him the finer points of surviving in the wilderness. No one is prepared for the undeniable chemistry between Alex and Penny, least of all themselves.
I loved this book! It was funny, sweet, witty and had just plain good writing. The writing feels real and not forced. I cared about all of the characters and the story was very relatable. Can't wait to pick up the next book by this author.
I was surprised at how entertaining this novel was! I expected it to be sweeter, but I loved the amount of humor that was put into the story by the different characters. Two different worlds, the city, and the country are brought together as three people take time to camp out in the middle of nowhere without any additional amenities. Additionally, I expected the entire story to take place in the camping setting but was interested in the fact that some of the stories take place after. In my mind, the story was going to wrap up on day ten in the wilderness right before they all return to their own lives, so it was nice that the story changes settings and the reader can experience the characters in multiple environments.
Alexander Jones is an author who is experiencing writer’s block for his next novel about an ex-military survivalist who has to live in the wilderness. I first must agree with other reviewers when I say that Alex Jones was not the best name for a character that a reader is supposed to love. For those that do not know, Alex Jones is an American far-right radio show host and conspiracy theorist. The name itself is famous enough to immediately associate with the real person. I am not sure that was the direction the author was trying to go for as the character was nothing like the real man with the same exact name. Alex the character was very funny as he is how I was when I first started going camping and had absolutely no experience in the wilderness and survival. He was weirded out by fishing and having to prepare the fish to eat after catching it. He does not like waking up with the dawn and prefers to sleep in. The list goes on and on and it made him very entertaining and relatable. He gave the story a lot of humor with his sarcastic comments.
He ends up on the wilderness trip at the suggestion of his best friend, Luke. Along for the journey to assist with Alex learning about the outdoors is Luke’s childhood friend, Penny. She and Alex actually first met while they were in college, but the two of them did not become super close over the years. Luke was a great teacher and I loved his moments, but I feel that he got left behind at times as the story was focused on Alex and Penny and their developing relationship. It would have been nice to get to know more about Luke, too, as he seemed to be an interesting character. Penny was an interesting character who was very outgoing and seemed to be prepared for any situation. She has a more tragic backstory compared to Alex and Luke that gets discussed in some detail, but it does not get fully resolved like I thought it would.
The majority of the novel is very light-hearted as Alex tries to learn more about survival. I liked that brief pieces of actual advice are thrown in there too that are great in real-life situations, such as finding and preparing drinkable water, how to find your way around, not relying on your phone as your only survival tool in case you are in a place it won’t work, where to build a shelter, etc. It was nice that this type of information was included considering it was the whole purpose of Alex being out in the woods in the first place. Penny and Luke are both great teachers, but it is Penny who takes the lead in most of the teachings. I like how she was very patient with Luke and it showed a more caring side to her and also how skilled she actually is.
When Alex and Luke interacted, I loved their brotherly dynamic. They are two different personalities, but you can see how they became and stayed friends for many years. They each supported the other and considered the other's feelings, which was nice to show their bond. Luke and Penny, although the interactions in the story were briefer, were also great together and you can see how they have a great bond, as well. Alex and Penny’s relationship starts flirty at the start of the story and I love how it progresses, considering that Alex starts with some unconscious cuddling with her while they all are sharing a tent. Their bond grows the more time they spend together and it was nice that they talked about real topics and it was not a relationship solely built on lust, although lust was a huge factor. Over time, Alex and Penny share more and more about themselves and it was nice how the other listened and was present for the conversations. They each cared about the other and they were not just placating the other each time they interacted.
Overall, the story was fun as the main character is a fish out of water learning about survival with some experts, who also happen to be his friends. It was very entertaining reading about him learning each new skill; some better than others. The romance was well done as it progressed naturally given the time constraints that the two characters shared. Alex is the main narrator, so we see how fast he is falling for Penny and also how he perceives Penny’s feelings for him. There is some unexpected drama that takes place and brings some heart to the story. It seemingly comes out of nowhere, but it made it very realistic as events happen out of nowhere in reality, even if they aren’t the extremes presented in this story. The characters and writing handle the transition well and it was a delightful read. There are pieces that I wish were explored in more detail, such as their backgrounds, but I enjoyed reading the words that were presented and I would read more from this author!
**I give a special thank you to Book Sirens and the author, KJ Holliday, for an ARC to read. The opinions expressed in my review are completely my own.**
“A hilarious love story”, I’m sorry but that’s a lie. Alex (the main guy) is very hipster and dull. He so wrapped up in himself and can’t get his head out of his a**. And Penny (the main female) was alright, but the way she is described in this book makes her sound like a porn star I.e. her long blonde ponytail, long legs, giving wake up blow jobs ? This whole book felt like it was written by a man, just unrealistic descriptions after cringey dialogue. I wanted to DNF this so badly, but I kept telling myself it was only a 184 pages Well I hate to tell you, but 184 pages was 180 too many.
I was given an advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review, so here it is:
Right from the first chapter, I knew I was going to love Alex because he is just so extra! His inner monologues are truly delightful to read and KJ Holliday writes him so well. There were moments where I literally laughed out loud while reading his sassy and snarky thoughts. And while he made me laugh too many times to count, he also has his tender moments where he's just so considerate of his friends' feelings and it makes for such a well-rounded character.
The other thing the author does well right from the get-go is the dynamic between Alex and Penny. They flirt sure, but even their quieter moments are note-worthy. The subconscious cuddling (and eventually the very conscious cuddling) was swoon worthy. The sexier moments are also written to perfection. This story is funny and sexy and cute and thoughtful. It has it all!
Penny as a character is absolutely fantastic! KJ Holliday peels the layers of her character as chapters go on and the more I learned about her, the more I liked her. It helps that she's also just fun to be around and pretty badass. As the story progresses, the trio just all keep getting better and better, but the general amazingness of Penny Foster is unmatched.
The developing relationship between Alex and Penny is such a treat to read! Because he too is learning more about her as the days go by and even though he's known her for years, he's now falling for her hard and fast which shifts things completely for him. Their conversations get deeper as time goes by and their connection intensifies both physically, but also emotionally. The balance between those two aspects is perfectly written.
While we're reading a rom-com, one thing I really appreciated was the friendship between Alex and Luke. Those two are like brothers and they had so many great moments: funny ones of course, but also more touching ones. Luke himself is a very lovable character, but he really shines when he's with his closest friends and their dynamics are explored, both together and separately.
And while most of the story is light-hearted and fun, when it comes crashing, the whiplash is very impactful! The drama, while unexpected for the characters, feels very natural. The relationships had to be tested and they are. The stakes are there and they are very real, very grounded. And while their circumstances completely change, the love the characters share stays and it's really great to see them navigate new settings and new dynamics that are forced upon them.
Overall, the writing is stellar: KJ Holliday conveys feelings flawlessly and her descriptions are so well written that you can actually picture everything in your head. I for one couldn't get enough and was sad to reach the end. I already can't wait to read more from her.
10 Days by K.J. Holliday is a fun romantic comedy with a camping theme. This is my first read by K.J. Holliday, so I really didn’t know what to expect going in, but when this showed up on my recommended book list the title caught my attention which made me read the blurb to find out what it was about. The camping/survival theme, as well as one of the main characters being an author, really sold me on the story and I couldn’t wait to discover what lay between the covers. But I must admit that I probably wouldn’t have found this book on my own, if it had not been on that list- and I am glad that it was as I have discovered another new-to-me author to add to my reading list. Alexander Jones is a bestselling author who is in the process of writing his second book, which isn’t going too well as he has a bad case of writer’s block. In the hope of inspiring some fresh ideas, Alex’s best friend, Luke, suggests a 10 day camping trip into the wilds. Since his story is set in the wilderness, Luke thought it would help if Alex, a complete city boy, experienced ‘survival’. As you can imagine, Alex is rather reluctant- but eventually he is persuaded to give it a try. Luke’s childhood friend and camping companion, Penny, is also along for the adventure (which is the highlight of the trip as far as Alex is concerned)….. and so, the story begins. What happens on the camping trip made for an entertaining read, with plenty of fun, banter, and sarcasm- which kept things fairly light-hearted- but the author managed to sprinkle in a little unexpected drama that kept things interesting. There were a few moments that made me wince, where the wording felt awkward and out of place with the rest of the story- but thankfully this didn’t detract too much from my overall enjoyment of the book.
I really enjoyed this entertaining romantic comedy featuring a city boy and a country girl who fall in love in ten days during a camping trip. Best selling novelist Alexander Jones is struggling with writing his second book and so his best friend Luke convinces him to take a trekking and survival boot camp in the wilderness to cure him of his writers block. The only problem is he hates the countryside and camping. Both Luke and his childhood friend Penny Foster take Alex to the mountains where they camped as children. Alex is completely out of his element almost straightaway but with his friends help he manages ten days. However, a surprising outcome of the trip is that within that ten days Alex has fallen in love with Penny, but is unsure how she feels or what Luke will think when he finds out.
This lighthearted and fun romance had me laughing out loud. The characters are all very realistic and relatable and the chemistry between Alex and Penny really comes across in the narrative. I liked how the book is written solely from Alex’s point of view which gives us a different perspective from the usual female viewpoint in most romance novels. I particularly liked Alex’s witty and sarcastic inner voice and found Alex to be an unusual but very likeable male lead, and was really cheering him on hoping he would get his girl, Penny. The author made the setting along with the camping and survivalist elements really come alive through her descriptive narrative which made me feel immersed in the story, and as though I was camping with them. An engaging and heartwarming read which I read in one sitting as once I started reading I could not put the book down. A great read for some much needed escapism during the continuing lockdown here in the UK.
What interested me most about this story was that the main character is a writer researching his next novel. I love books about books, libraries, and writers, and getting a peek into methods an author uses to research aspects of a novel is very interesting to me. I felt that the insight Holliday depicts into an author’s mind was very appealing.
I liked the main characters, although I would have enjoyed a deeper dive into both Alex’s and Penny’s backgrounds. We’re given a glimpse into their histories but I think the story might have benefitted from a deeper dive, especially as it plays into how they deal with conflict. And I really would have liked to get to know their friend, Luke, a lot better.
I thoroughly enjoyed Alex’s sarcasm and self-deprecating humor. For the most part, I found Alex’s inner monologue to be witty, with clever turns of phrase and unique metaphors and similes. For example, I loved the bit where he waxed poetically about his love of words. However, at times there were clunkers, like when he referred to sarcasm that he “dished out like it was carbon monoxide.”
The climactic external conflict was . . . odd. Alex kept saying that throughout those scenes, so obviously the author acknowledged the absurdity. It just felt like it didn’t quite fit into the narrative. It did, however, do the job of cementing Alex and Penny’s budding relationship, as it was meant to.
In the end, I did enjoy the book and I would probably check out other books by the author in the future.

Spoiler Alert! KJ Holliday's 10 Days is totally reread worthy. Two friends try to help out a struggling writer by taking him into the wilderness to survive for ten days.
On this grand camping adventure--Alex's reliance on not only Penny, but their mutual friend Luke, allows him to be a vulnerable and relatable character. Alex and Penny are two highly complex characters, and the journey they go on together is endearing, their conversations meaningful, the story heartwarming. Penny's "perfect girl-next-door" originally seems simple, but then her depth is shown. Fishing, hunting, building shelters, and more, the friends train Alex, the writer, in the ways of the woods.
Through each of their tasks, Penny and Alex continue to come together and the attraction between the two eventually grows from a slow burn to a definite sizzle. The scenes are simply sweet between the couple, and the best parts are realistic, tender, and memorable.
I enjoyed Holliday's humor throughout the book. From Alex's battle putting the tent up to his battle with Penny's mom, he is not only sarcastically delightful, but a perfectly unexpected hero.
I can't wait to see what Holliday writes next--I'll definitely keep this author on my watch for list!

When Alex is suffering from a serious case of writer's block (and the deadline for his next book is looming), his best friend Luke takes him up to the mountains to help Alex find that spark. Luke's other best friend, and friend of Alex by association, Penny joins them on the trip. While opening Alex's eyes to what it takes to survive in nature, Alex's eyes are also opened about his feelings for Penny. While there is a "bro-code" between Alex and Luke, Alex finds it harder and harder to keep his thoughts from straying to Penny. When they realize they have a mutual attraction, they decide to act on it. Should they be honest with Luke at tell him what's going on? When they are forced to end their trip early and come home, doubts start to creep into Alex's mind about whether or not this thing with Penny can survive back in the city. This causes him and Lucas to argue...and Alex to doubt if he is worthy. I found myself drawn to Alex's character because I can see myself in him (minus the childhood and background issues). However, I believe Penny is good for him and forces him, gently, out of his comfort zone to see the person he could be. I enjoyed the story and, like most readers, want to know what happens next. Overall, a good story.

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump of late and was very apprehensive about being able to finish this book but… what a charming read this was!
+ it was fast paced read with some good character development as well (not sacrificed at all) + the wilderness survival information included was done superbly – informative and interesting – learning alongside Penny + the romance was actually believable, and I could genuinely relate to the characters, Alex and Penny – which I thought was very refreshing for a change + we also get a great display of a bromance between Alex and Luke and I simply loved their brotherly dynamics + bonus: light-hearted and funny too (exactly what is needed with all the craziness happening outside)!
- there were some times where I did feel that the wording was a bit ‘clunky’ and out of place, where I could tell that it just needed another tweak to get the wording right – this is my reasoning for why it did not get the full star to make 5 and instead only earns itself a half-star.
A first read from KJ Holliday but certainly not the last :D
If I had friends like Alexander’s, I think that I would murder them all, because nothing could convince me to go on a survivalist trek, not even for research for a novel. I tell you I’d be googling it with my hands wrapped around a glass of wine, wrapped up in a duvet, binge-watching something terrible on Netflix. Alexander Jones isn’t as smart as me and instead lets his friends pressure him into a daft adventure that they swear will give him the know-how in writing his next novel. Alex, bless him thinks it's going to be easy, because he possesses ‘deductive reasoning’, but easy it is not. I mean, I could have told him that. I guess he does have them to thank for meeting the girl of his dreams. Because in 10 days he falls in love with the childhood friend of his mate Luke. I really like Penny Foster (the childhood friend), I thought she was refreshing and cool, and it was interesting to get to know her through Alex’s narrative, who was insanely sarcastic and just the right amount of miserable about most things. Honestly, this was hilarious, and I adored it. Holliday just knows how to grip you, and as simple as the storyline is, it never gets boring or old. I would recommend this to anyone. Get reading, you will have a laugh, trust me.
Thanks @booksirens for allowing me to read this arc of 10 Days by KJ Holiday.
This book is absolutely amazing! The perfect addition to the collection of rom-com lovers. If you don’t have it then you’re serially missing out. I’m here to give y’all honest reviews and this is something you should definitely read.
It endures trekking, camping, sarcastic and funny moments, steamy scenes as fun friendships.
We all have great expectations for when we go camping in the woods. But when a metropolitan city citizen goes into the woods, it’s not easy and it’s perfectly portrayed through Alex in the book. @kj.holliday beautifully shows that even the most beautiful person has troubles. Poppy is so strong and intelligent and beautiful but she still has her own struggles. A beautiful character.
It’s the perfect mix of sweet and savoury, comedy lovey-dovey romance. I mean, I just love Alex and Poppy’s dynamic! You will not find a guy funnier and more relatable than Alex!
This book was perfect but I personally like more confident boys who’re not afraid to admit heir feelings. But other than that it’s amazing!
