Reconnect with the Lost and Found group as they settle into the intricacies of marriage and growing families.
When Shannon proposes having another baby, John is caught flat-footed. He just survived the weekend from hell, caring for his two rambunctious boys. Now she wants to add another?
But that conversation has to go on hold, because she’s brought home a young soldier that is struggling to reconnect with civilian life. He seems to be checking off a list of tasks before he checks out himself. Can they detour his death plan and give him something to live for?
Marigold Lee hired on at the Lost and Found Investigative Service to honor her father’s memory while she attains her psychology degree. The young soldier with the devastating burns makes her yearn for a relationship, but his suicidal tendencies brings up her own emotional baggage.
As she helps him wade through the traumatic minefield of discovering his lost family and consoling another, they find a connection greater than either of them ever expected.
NY Times and USA Today Bestselling author J.M. Madden writes compelling romances between 'combat modified' military men and the women who love them. J.M. Madden loves any and all good love stories, most particularly her own. She has two beautiful children and a husband who always keeps her on her toes.
J.M. was a Deputy Sheriff in Ohio for nine years, until hubby moved the clan to Kentucky. When not chasing the family around, she's at the computer, reading and writing, perfecting her craft. She occasionally takes breaks to feed her animal horde and is trying to control her office-supply addiction, but both tasks are uphill battles. Happily, she is writing full-time and always has several projects in the works. She also dearly loves to hear from readers! So, drop her a line. She'll respond.
I was excited to read this latest installment to the LNF series. Great catching up with John & Shannon and their twins! Got a tiny bit of Zeke & Ember, some of my favourite characters ... and also a very brief cameo from Chad & Lora (whose book I have not read as of this writing). I would have liked it very much if more of the LNF crew had made an appearance in this installment (ie, Duncan & Alex since they were the stars of the previous book), but since all the previous books dealt with Vets who were still dealing with the consequences of their military service long after they were injured, I enjoyed that this story was about a newly injured young vet & his journey to recovery. I've been wanting to read a story about a vet who just left the hospital & have to fend for himself out in the real world. This is that book.
Now regardless of how anyone may feel about US foreign policy & military actions, the human factor is what makes this series so worthwhile. It shows so well the human cost of war. It's heartbreaking & shocking to consider that the stuff these vets go through - - occur in real life. It's no wonder the suicide rate among this group is so high. I also think about the casualties on the other side. It's all very sad. War is a natural part of human existence. I'm not naive or idealistic enough to believe we will ever live in a world without war. As long as mankind exists, there will always be opposing factions ... which will lead to war. But it sucks, man. It sucks balls when you see the human cost of it so up close & personal, as illustrated in these books.
Anyway, moving on. I was, still am, a little disappointed that all the kids featured in this series are mostly glossed over, mentioned but not really seen. There was a lot of telling rather than showing in this book, including but not limited to the kiddos. The twins were often described as super cute and rambunctious and I'm sure they were given their age, but we really got so few moments to actually SEE them being such. I would have liked to have seen at least one whole scene of them interacting with one or both of their parents ... maybe a funny babble-talking scene or John doing something funny & cute with them. I also had this same issue with Ember's son in Embattled Minds (how cute would it have been actually 'seeing' Zeke bond with Drew?) & Harper's kids in Embattled SEAL. How a parent interacts with their kids reveals a lot about their character & can make them even more endearing to readers. I think this was a missed opportunity. The telling vs showing did not just affect the kids, though. It was all over this book.
In spite of this, JM Madden is a talented author. I think she felt pressured to get this book out fast so quality may have been sacrificed for speed. Anyway, not only has she opened this reader's - and I'm sure others - eyes about a subject matter I was only vaguely aware & preoccupied with, but she's also able to characterize her leads in such a way that make them come alive in my head; they seem like very real people who I could have interacted with in real life. I can visualize the LNF office & work culture very well, I can visualize the whole crew socializing at the Frog Dog and see Shannon & John's home life. The world she created around the characters is very vivid. It's wonderful.
Another thing I think she does well is present the characters appropriately according their ages & life experiences. I sometimes feel like other authors fail in this area because their characters' actions and internal monologue don't match with their physical age or where they should be in life. Reading about Marigold & Logan in this book, I felt like Madden captured very well the spirit of a young, 20-something couple, both in deed & dialogue. I remember thinking the same thing when I read Duncan & Alex's story. Duncan's internal monologue was very realistic of a man his age. Then there's John & his a$$hole, but somehow still likable, personality ... very convincingly presented. Her characterizations are so well-done, I sometimes have to wonder if they're modeled after real people rather just figments of her imagination.
In general, Embattled Return is perhaps not my most favourite book in the series so far (I have to read Chad's book), but it's readable. My discontent is not with the story per se ... my gripe is more toward certain aspects of the writing. The telling instead of showing was really jarring & somehow disrupted the fluidity of the story for me. There were also glaring timeline & editing errors (something I normally don't complain about like other readers do). I found myself zoning out or putting down the book more times than is usual for this series. I read most of the previous books in one sitting, often sacrificing my beauty sleep & regretting it bitterly the next morning. However, Embattled Return wasn't as fast-paced & engaging, I kinda just slugged through it.
I'm still very much invested in the series though & will continue to read it because the characters are dear to me. I think there are lots more stories to tell about the LNF gang & I'm glad to know that Madden intends to continue writing about them. I'm also contemplating starting the spinoff Dogs of War series.
I just love catching up with the Lost and Found group! Especially John, Shannon and the twins; the nicknames for these two little angels (?) had me in hysterics! A lot is going on at LNF, plans for the new Columbus branch are being finalized, Marigold, an assistant for Shannon, is working out and then there’s Logan Vance, a disabled Army veteran looking for family and forgiveness. This book lets us see the the camaraderie that has built LNF from a business to a true family that keeps growing. Thanks JM Madden for another glimpse of these wonderful characters!
I was thrilled when I discovered a new Lost and Found book was in the works. It's one of my all time favorite series that I've re-read countless times. I was even more thrilled to learn John and Shannon would have a significant presence in Embattled Return. They are my favorite and throw in characters from the rest of the series as well and it's like a big family reunion. Aside from John and Shannon, this book introduces new characters (yay!) Marigold and Logan. All of the pieces fall together after a chance meeting with Shannon and Logan. This book literally made me feel everything. From laughing out loud at John's antics, to feeling eveything for Logan's losses, to happiness and joy when things start to fall into place for Marigold and Logan. I sound like a broken record every time I review a JM Madden book when I say that no author I've ever read handles the subject of wounded veterans like she does. I've read so much military romance, and there are lots of authors that do their research and write active soldiers and their work phenomenally, but not so much our wounded warriors. JM Madden dives into all the bad and ugly that soldiers deal with daily, scars that are physical, mental, and emotional. It's heartbreaking and at the same time gratifying to read about what is a reality for so many. Logan and Marigold fit perfectly into the LNF family and their HEA is real life stuff. Logan isn't miraculously healed, but he's using the tools he's given to improve every day. I recommend this book, and the entire series! There were so many moments that made me laugh, and then moments later tear up, but I don't want to spoil anything. And John's connection to Marigold was heartwarming to say the least. I'm so looking forward to more from this author!
This series is one of my favorites to read, so when there is a new book I'm always happy. I loved that we got a lot of time with John and Shannon, seeing them living their lives happy, chaotic, but happy. I liked the rude awakening John had with the boys and how he realized he needed to help Shannon more around the house and with the boys. And Shannon with her soft heart realized a stranger needed help and found the best way to help him, by making him think he was helping her.
Shannon was the best thing to happen to Logan for so many reasons. You could tell he was barely hanging on, the thread was fraying and fast, but meeting the guys and Mari at LNF really changed things. First off Mari made him think of things in a different way, about himself and things that happened to him. But it was seeing all the guys at LNF and Zeke's bar, guys like himself, a bit damaged, but living like they weren't that was the real eye opener. It planted the thought that his life didn't have to be what he thought. Then there was John helping Logan find his family, a real game changer in so many ways, opening more avenues for Logan, ones he really wanted. Lastly LNF always seems to find a spot for someone they think could use a job and be good for them, this giving Logan a real reason to stay, to really start something with Mari, to find out more about the lost family. So many good things that the fraying thread was fraying no more by the end.
First let me say I'm tickled that a new book is being released for this series. Lost And Found is my favorite series ever. Embattled Return is a phenomenal contemporary romance by J.M. Madden. Ms. Madden has once again delivered a well-written book populated with magnificent characters. Readers will fall in love with John and Shannon all over again as they introduce Logan to the Lost & Found family. Logan lost his best friend to the IED blast that killed everyone in the vehicle but him. After months in the hospital Logan is finishing his bucket list with suicide a possiblity. Marigold had worked for L&F for a month and was happy to be Logan's driver. This story blends John and Shannon's relationship with Marigold and Logan's into a fantastic book. You'll find plenty of humor, drama and sizzle between the cover of this book and I loved every page. Embattled Return is book 6 of the Lost And Found Series but can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading them all in order. It's just awesome the way they connect. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The perfect book for Christmas time, although not a holiday themed book. It’s the feelings of family and togetherness. We get to catch up with John and Shannon with their twin boys. Shannon is the reason the team meets Logan, a troubled vet with injuries and his own mission. Logan and Marigold are perfect for each other. She understands his outlook on life and reads his body language to know what, if any, help he needs. We get cameos from most of the Lost and Found team and some leads on future stories, always teasing us with more. If you are new to the series I highly recommend reading the first two books to meet John and Shannon, and some others. I’m always thrilled to read an early copy and leave my review voluntarily.
This book was an amazing, beautiful book to visit with past characters. The new characters and the new LNF branch is an exciting new set of books to look forward to.
Solid writing with the found family trope thats standard for military and MC romances. Not as filled with rah-rah military machismo as other genre romances, with thoughtful writing about PTSD and veterans issues.
Just not my cup of tea however.
Edit: wild, I just realized I actually read several books in this series.
In this edition of the LNF series we catch up with Shannon, John, and the twins who are now almost 2. Caden and Wyatt are so cute with a terroristic side to them, lol. Ms. Madden introduces two new characters to us and of course, I liked them right away.
The opening chapter is hysterical as John and Shannon email each other back and forth while she is away at a week-long conference. It is while Shannon is in the airport and on her way home that she notices a veteran in need of help in the airport in Chicago. Shannon has a unique ability to pull people in and well Logan Vance is no different. She drags him albeit a bit reluctantly to the LNF office and well things go from there as Ms. Madden introduces two new characters to the LNF family. Logan meets Marigold Lee there and well things click but first Logan is on a mission and he isn't looking for commitment.
Ms. Madden has done a wonderful job of drawing us in so much that we care about these characters. There struggles with survivor's guilt are real and believable. Her characters are wounded in many ways but he makes sure that they are still men and that they can find someone who will love them and see them for who they really are and their scars or disabilities. I love that.
Ms. Madden also allows us a glimpse into raising two "despots" as John calls his twin boys. We also get to see Aiden briefly and Lora and Chad, who are having problems. Zeke and Ember make an appearance as well. It's like coming home and catching up with old friends while meeting new ones and becoming engrossed in their story. This story promises to open up to a new branch of LNF as they have just opened one in Columbus, Ohio. I can't wait to find out what happens in Columbus because I am sure it won't stay there, lol. I am also hoping to hear more about Lora and Chad and their struggles with family life.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Embattled Return by J. M. Madden which is the sixth book in the author's Lost and Found series.
My favorite couple John and Shannon are back with their twins Wyatt and Caden with hilariously emails to each other when Shannon's flight is canceled and she gets tipsy with Yellow Fish, Fin or is it Tail wine? :) and John is finding out how hard it is to take care of 2 year old twins while she is at a conference. When she meets Logan she recognizes that he's recently released from the Army and wounded combat modified veteran, immediately she takes him under her wing and home to meet the LNF crew. I love how the author knows how to describe how it really is for all of our veterans wounded or not and what it means to them to come home lost and wanting to help make the parents understand what their battle buddy meant to them.
Logan Walter has survived a IED that killed every one in his MRAP and recovering from multiple surgeries he meets Shannon on her way home to Denver. He'll be accepted into the LNF found by everyone and John offers to help him find his long lost family. He'll meet Marigold who's Shannon's new assistant and is determined to help Logan adjust to life in Denver. You'll love Grandma Nancy and her Jesus juice plus catching up with all of the LNF family. You'll love two new characters, a new office in Columbus, OH and seeing Logan find a lost family he didn't know he had.
This book had me laughing at the first page, John's email to Shannon while she's away at a convention is absolutely hysterical. Her response even more so as she's gotten a bit tipsy with her flight home delayed then cancelled.
John's handling of the twins is both funny and endearing. He does of course have help, but the daycare Moms can scare the hardiest of the LNF guys. Chad goes with him to the twin's doctor's appointment and then to the airport to pick up Shannon.
Shannon on the other hand sees someone who needs help but won't ask as she's heading the gate for the final leg home. She manages to break his barriers just a bit between the walk to their flight and during it. However, it's John and Chad that make the first bit of a break through.
We learn about Marigold, Shannon's assistant and how John almost messed up her hiring. Yet more giggles from me.
Once at LNF Headquarters, John gets the information from Logan to start his search for his family. When that's done he recruits Marigold to take Logan to a hotel.
Here we get a closer look at Marigold as she drops her act of annoyance with John. Logan appreciates the humor, and in spite of himself finds he's attracted to her. Marigold too, is facing that pull and she isn't quite sure how to handle it.
This is an intense yet enjoyable read, as Logan finds some peace and lots of other things including love.
I read the Lost and Found series a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed the storylines about veterans returning home and creating a business for them to work at and work with and around the changes that life has dealt them from their time in the service and was very excited to get another book in this series. Embattled Return has a stand alone story of a young veteran, Logan that is searching for some closure in his life. He has been severely injured and is also extremely depressed. One of the series original characters Shannon runs into him at the airport and takes him under her wing ignoring the fact that he would rather hole up away from the rest of the world. In bringing him to LNF, Logan meets a group of men that may be older but they have all experienced war and its aftereffects. He also meets another young staffer, Marigold that wants to help heal his wounded soul. This was a very moving story about death, despair, hope, purpose, friendship, family and love. If you have not read any books in the series before I do recommend reading at least the first book in the series so that you understand the backstory of the characters. It was told from dual POV and there are some steamy scenes and salty language that fits the story perfectly.
This book is so good, it was nice catching up with John and Shannon and the family. I loved the funny email's between Shannon and John. John with the kids are so funny and he is such a softie for them and his wife...
What Shannon did in the airport with Logan was amazing she is such a good person... I loved Chad and John together, it was so good to see they always have each other's six... I loved seeing the whole gang, and how they have been doing...
I loved the story with Marigold and Logan who we meet for the first time... I love the connection Marigold and John have, wish we saw more of that during the book not at the end.
I loved how John mellowed, with Shannon and their kids. John is more like the Gunny, I am sure he was in the Marines. He is the guy, Logan turns to for advice...
You will laugh and cry and truly enjoy this book if you are a fan of the Lost and Found Family.... It truly felt like we were coming back to family..... Oh and you will love Grandma as well....
I hope we get a follow up book on Logan and Marigold, I would love to see John do what he promised Marigold at the end... Have your Kleenex handy....
The LNF group is growing, both in business and in personnel. Shannon is at a conference and on her way back she is delayed by bad weather. When she finally is able to get flights to Denver, she meets a young man on crutches, obviously military, definitely not wanting help. Logan is in constant pain, depressed, and disengaged from the world. Shannon recognizes a "combat-modified" veteran immediately and forces herself into his company. She wants John and the LNF guys to meet him. When they arrive at Denver, she has thawed him out to the extent that when he meets Chad and John, he is accepting of them. They sweep him into their lives, and before he knows it, he has met Shannon's new assistant, Marigold, and she has met him. Vance has a long way to go before he is ready to meet the world but he has a promise to keep and Marigold is the one to help him. there is more news in the LNF world, too - that world keeps expanding!
This book brings us back to the Lost and Found group in Denver. John and Shannon Palmer are busy balancing raising their rambunctious twins with hectic work schedules. There is a new office assistant who relieves some work stress from Shannon but John is on her bad list. Logan, a combat modified veteran, is on a mission in Denver. The Columbus office deal is being finalized and the whole crew is together. I laughed at the twins' antics, cried at Logan's guilt over being the sole survivor of an IED blast, cheered when LNF family gets their HEA. I devoured this book and was sad when I read the last word. J.M.Karen has created characters so real they feel like family members whose stories touch my heart. She shows how war wounds (both seen and unseen) affect the lives of veterans. And she gives us women who see the value and heart of these wounded warriors, even when they can't see their own worth.
The emotions and the feels these stories pull from you as your reading are a true testament to the author's realistic view of veterans who return scared or disabled on both the outside and inside.
I thought this story was going to be about the original couples in the series but imagine my surprise when we got two new characters. I fell in love with Logan Vance from his first moment on the page struggling with his crutches and luggage in the airport all while trying to be invisible. Mad respect for Shannon for noticing and befriending him and convincing him to coming to the LNF office where the team and Shannon's new assistant Marigold change his life.
There were other things going with other characters along with new branch but for me the heart and soul of this book was Logan and Marigold and I loved their story.
O.M.G! The opening email in this story is awesome! I read it twice before continuing the story. We already know John and Shannon and love them both to bits (personally I have a soft spot for Zeke hint, hint) . John in particular is so well written that even at his worst, you are pulling for him. Logan, our hero, is muddied. Guilt, anger, pain and a messed up childhood has muddied the good man inside. Marigold, who lives up to her name beautifully is no pushover but gradually she helps him wash the mud away. Not a great analogy but to me the easiest way to describe it. J. M. Madden is a wonderful writer bringing genuine people to life. These are not characters, they are living, breathing people that you love meeting over and over. Can't wait for the next chapter of their lives.
I needed to get back to one of my favorite series to cleanse my soul.
Revisiting the crew and having John and Shannon being the two to bring life and love to a lost Logan was an epic concept. John is known for his devil may care attitude but the emotion and guidance he displayed in Embattled Return was growth and needed.
Now on to what made my heart happy, Marigold and her support of Logan. She fits in the clan of women who look to the heart of the man not what is on the surface. I just loved her words, actions, and realness. She wore her heart on her sleeve and Logan didn't have a chance in hell to escape the hold she had on his heart. He may have headed to Denver with a plan and expected to commitment but a woman who is real and genuine will change that in a matter of days.
We return the Lost and Found series with Embattled Return. We get to see old friends and catch up on their lives, especially John and Shannon. We meet a couple of new characters, Marigold and Logan. He is at the end of his rope and Shannon somehow gets him to come to the Lost and Found office. Enter Marigold. She is Shannon's assistant. They meet and sparks fly... at least for Marigold. Logan is not looking for a relationship or anything else. He just wants to do his duty to his best friend. Will Logan and Marigold get their HEA? Get this book ASAP and find out. I promise you won't regret it. Sorry, no spoilers
When I see that a new JM Madden book has come out, I know it will be a great read. This one did not disappoint me.
The focus of this book was on Logan, a wounded Army Veteran who felt he had nothing to live for. Shannon, coming back from a conference sees him at the airport and drags him back to the LNF office so that John could help him find his family.
While Shannon is away, John has a chaotic time with his 2 boys and how much Shannon goes through on a daily basis.
Marigold is in the picture, her new assistant, and she instantly falls for Logan. She sticks to Logan and their relationship grows.
This was a quick read in a series I really like. It tackles wounded and disabled Veterans. This book does a great job of showing the reader what veterans sometimes have to go through. The things Logan have been through in his life, not only growing up but after being injured in the military broke my heart. He very understandably struggles to find a reason to live. Mari does a wonderful job of being patient and supportive while he finds that reason. My only gripe is that things with his friend's mother weren't resolved. Not only that but given that she herself is former military, her bitterness and accusations make no sense. But, overall this is a good book.
If you have been wanting more Lost and Found books, Embattled Return will leave you with a huge smile on your face. I could not put this book down!! Not only do you get to catch up with the whole group, you get a great John and Shannon story. I love how family has been incorporated even more into the group since our wounded warriors found their spouses. You also get a bonus story in this book about a wounded soldier that Shannon finds in an airport. Of course he finds peace and falls in love with a member of the LNF staff. This story has all of the feels. I was laughing, crying, and grinning. J. M. Madden is an awesome story teller. I can’t wait to see what’s next!!
Embattled Return gives us an update on John and Shannon's life with the twin boys, and allows us a peek into the other LNF warriors and their wives. It also introduces us to Logan, a wounded vet, that Shannon sees & "rescues" in an airport. In true Madden fashion, we get a great story with new characters while also seeing our favorites from previous ones. This can be read as standalone, however, for those of us who have followed this series since Book 1, I must say you are in for a treat. I received this as an ARC and voluntarily give my review.
I love the LNF series and this book just makes it better and better. Apart from seeing a lot more of John and Shannon, and their sweet little terrors, we are introduced to Marigold, a young assistant to Shannon, and Logan, a wounded warrior with a heartbreaking past and mission. Their connection and the developing relationship is heartwarming.
It is wonderful catching up with lots of others from previous books and reminded me why I have been hooked on this series since 2012. Thank you, JM Madden, for adding this book to the series and leaving us with hope that we will see more of the LNF crew in the future!
JM brings us back to where it all began in Embattled Return. We get to see a glimpse of what's to come, intro to some newbies and the loving return of some of our favs.
Starting with some drunk emails, you begin reading with laughter. Even through the seriousness of the battles that our Veterans go through on a daily basis, JM continues to make us smile, if not, straight out laugh. This was such a delightful book, I felt as if I were coming home. I definitely need more!
I have enjoyed all of J.M. Madden's stories. Her characters reach out and touch your heart. In Embattled Return, we find Shannon and John facing the challenge of raising their young twins, and to new characters that are facing the fears that too many of our returning veterans face. Some of her other characters in the series are there to help Logan come to terms with the changes in his life, learn to accept help, and of course to fall in love with a woman that will stand by him.
For soldiers, who lives or who dies should not bring guilt, but often does. Unfortunately, guilt does bring thoughts of suicide, it takes work, support and love to dispel this awful outcome. Embattled Return is finding hope, finding love, realizing that support is there when all seems bleak. Moving forward is possible. So excited for this new entry into the Lost and Found series, it was well worth the wait. Could not put it down, didn’t want to. Highly recommend.
After reading all the other books in the Embattled Series/Lost and Found, I was anxious to read just one more, they are that addictive. I’ve come to expect disappointment when the series gets to the 4th or 5th book. Not in this case, each one is better than the last. As with all of JM Madden’s books, the anticipation keeps you turning the pages. It has an intriguing storyline addressing many of today’s concerns regarding our veterans. I could not put the book down until I had read it in full.
To say I adore this series would be an understatement. This author always takes me on an emotional ride which has me reaching for my Kleenex box more than once. Lucas and Marigold we are a fantastic addition to the LNF family.
Having Shannon and John as a big part of the story just enriched it even more. John has come so far from when we first met him that it’s a joy to see how much he is enjoying his life with his wife and boys.
This was awesome! The empathy these people have, and insights just make a beautiful journey. Logan and Marigold have feelings for each other, but he has a ton of misplaced guilt. John and Shannon are like the Godparents of LnF, and play a big part in here. Loved this continuing journey of the Lost and Found series, adding new characters and having an HEA for each read is the best.
