In 2019, a study published in The Behavior Therapist, vol. 42, no. 2, conducted by D. Robertson and T. Codd explored Stoicism’s similarities to modern psychotherapy.
The findings show that the founders of modern psychotherapy, A. Ellis and A. Beck, acknowledged the main principles of REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) were originally discovered and stated by the Stoics.

Overall, How To Be A Stoic is an okay book if you want a short introduction to Stoicism. What makes the book worse are the random examples and stories — they feel artificial and generic, almost like something a machine would generate, and don't resonate with me at all.
Even worse, in the Dictionary of Control, the author recommends starting a dropshipping business if you have no money. Dropshipping is a socially acceptable form of scamming and has nothing in common with Stoic values like honesty and duty. It shows that the recommendations and examples weren't thought through carefully.
If you can skip some examples, this book will still provide you with an overall understanding of Stoicism. It is written in very simple language, so it can be understood by anyone.

This was a good enough quick primer on Stoicism that answered some of my basic questions about it (is it a religion? Is it different from regular mindfulness/psych practices?) and give me a gist of what Stoicism prides itself in. Got some helpful tips around accepting criticism, valuing rationality, and not putting stock in the opinions of others. I don’t know if I have the discipline or temperament to go full Stoic with the negative visualizations and a certain level of voluntary hardship but it was helpful to read about😅
Book review of How To Be A Stoic by David Dillinger. 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.
How To Be A Stoic: Little-Known Tips On How To Cut Through Distractions And Desires To Become A Better Human Being by David Dillinger is a perfect fit for readers seeking a more balanced and fulfilling life, particularly those struggling with anxiety, feeling overwhelmed by modern society, or looking to cultivate emotional resilience and inner peace through the timeless wisdom of Stoicism.
First of all, this was a nice break from reading Anne Rice. I don’t dislike her as an author, but I just can’t get used to her writings. This book teaches you to recognize what you can control and what you can’t control. It focuses on a lot of the things I feel like this newest generation needs to survive in the world, as do we. This was a good read, perhaps mostly because it touched a lot on what I needed at the moment. These are good lessons to learn and easy reminders, but just because they’re easy doesn’t mean they’re easily obtained.
“For every challenge, remember the resources you have within you to cope with it.”
Interesting read and a few take home points about stoicism such as voluntary hardship and loving your fate is an concept I’ve not heard before but makes complete sense how you can reinterpret your past in a positive way. Negative visualisation is something I’m not too familiar with either so I’ll have a look into that as a technique too. Overall a fairly good introduction to some basic concepts and although it didn’t really read well in parts, it still felt worthwhile to finish.
If the title hadn't promised 'little-known tips' I would've rated it 3 stars. I've read a few beginners books on stoicism and this tells you nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, new or little-known. It just gives you a whole lot of superfluous examples. The writing style is extremely simple, which I think may be enjoyable if you're not used to reading or if you don't really like reading.
Overall a pretty okay book, I was looking for a quick refresher on stoic philosophy and this gave me the main takeaways and names. Cheesy at times with the writing. My favorite part is when they recommend you start a drop-shipping business.
Es un texto prescindible, aunque de utilidad para quienes desconocen las líneas generales del estoicismo. Pueden ahorrárselo no solo los conocedores, sino quienes quisieran aprovechar sus recursos para otras incursiones literarias.
