Manchester, 1979. Tim is supposed to be studying English but spends most of his time hanging out with what Simone, his girlfriend, describes as his ‘disastrous friends.’ These include Norman, a freeloading kleptomaniac, William, on his way to becoming Wendy, and a reluctant Sikh called Sage. Simone works as a stripper at a fleapit called ‘The Glamour’ where her brother is a bouncer. He is mixed up with some drug-dealers and has got on the wrong side of them, leading to Tim, Simone and co. being drawn into an absurd and increasingly perilous situation. Can they get through it?
Chris is a friend, so I am definitely biased in his favor, but, damn, he's a fine reporter of dialogue and a seriously funny voice in the face of seemingly constant British squalor. I can easily recommend this book, but only if you've got a sense of humor. Or humour, would probably better.
