Instagram - with a billion active users, it’s one of the world’s most popular social media platforms. One of its many thriving communities is bookstagram, where readers share ‘bookish’ photos, reviews and discuss their favourite books in enthusiastic detail. But as many more people join every day, it becomes harder to stand out from the crowd.
As a successful bookstagrammer (and recent author) I’m going to share with you all the knowledge and expert tricks I’ve learned over the years of running my @outandabout.books account.
This book covers how to gain followers organically and have your account reach the audience it’s intended for. It covers everything from taking the photos, editing them and writing engaging captions, to making the most out of the ever-changing features the app offers. I’ll also talk about using your account to engage with other readers, authors and even publishers.
And it’s not just my knowledge that fills the pages. I’ve reached out to dozens of other successful bookstagrammers for their best tips and tricks, alongside surveying my bookstagram followers to make sure I covered every aspect of running a book-centred account. This book is filled with advice and helpful thoughts from other bookstagrammers and accounts in the community. It also contains more exclusive interviews focused on how you can use your platform to engage with readers as an author or find customers as a bookish shop.
You’ll learn the basics of setting up your account and what being a respected part of the bookstagram community entails. I’ll help you tackle Instagram’s constantly changing algorithm, which can make the difference between your posts being seen and them sinking into oblivion.
Once you’ve established your account there are lots of doors that can open to you, like working as a representative for a bookish shop and being sent advanced reader copies from publishers. But sometimes it’s hard to find these opportunities. I understand how difficult this can be, especially at the beginning, so I’ve interviewed a bookish shop owner and a publicist at Hodder and Stoughton to give you an insight into what they’re looking for when sending out free products to influencers.
This book has everything you could need to know to thrive in the ever-growing world of books on Instagram. So now you’ve heard the book sales pitch, let’s get on with the book...
Abby Hope Patrick published her first novel at 17 and has since written across dystopian, fantasy, mystery, and non-fiction genres. Beyond novels, she has written and directed two murder mystery plays in London, earning an OffComm award. A devoted reader first and foremost, she writes surrounded by books that have shaped her journey. When not crafting stories, she can be found singing along to musicals at her desk or sharing book reviews with her Instagram followers (@abbyhopepatrick).
Really helpful book! I have a kindle copy on my phone, and I have tagged a few especially helpful notes that I plan to review again as I continue on my bookstagram journey!
•This actually (I think) was one of the first nonfiction books I've read. I've read it both because it sounds interesting and also I think Abby is going to be one of the authors that I just buy their books no matter what they are about. •It is really obvious that Abby had spent A LOT of time on research because there are lost of things in the book that you can't just know, you need to search it. •It is a short, very informative book about how to start your bookish accounts and keep it going, become successful. It is mostly aimed at Bookstagram but it also talks about Booktube. It starts from the beginning - how to start your account - and almost takes you step by step towards success. It tells you about the pictures you can take as well as the hashtags you can use. It also talks about how you can receive ARCs or become Reps to shops. •It pretty much has an answer to all your questions about the bookstagram community. Even if you have a Bookstagram already, you should still check this book out as it could still give you advice on how to make it more successful
Well the I think the thing that sums up how much I enjoyed and learnt from this book is to say that I read, bookmarked and highlighted it within one day!
I have recently started a studygram, not too different from the bookstagram community, and the amount of bookmarks and annotations I have in this book really shows that this book is SO incredibly helpful for tips and tricks into building up a great Instagram. So anyone who is thinking of starting up their own bookstagram ,this book is E S S E N T I A L!
But not only is this book handy with all the tips, it's really quite engaging. Usually I find non-fiction books a tad boring (I know, shoot me) but the author found a way to make it personal, especially with the tips from other bookstagrammers and interviews, along with hearing abut the author's own experiences with their bookstagram.
To sum this up, I'm just going to say, see y'all when I'm a famous studygrammer ;)
I have so much I want to say about this book - all great things of course - that I don’t know where to start.
Firstly I’ll start with how well this book is done - you might not personally like non fiction, I agree that sometimes they can be a bit boring. But not this one. Abby has really woven her personality into this book, and you really feel like you’re reading a friends advice, from someone with real experience. It’s not too formal and ‘serious’. And it doesn’t feel like it’s written by a robot. It’s authentic. And it’s short, split up and really easy to read. I read it all in just one sitting.
It’s extremely helpful for everyone. It’s not just for newbie bookstagrammers (it’s the perfect thing to read before you start though) it’s also sooo helpful for us that have already been in the community for a little while. I’m not the best at Instagram, I’m pretty simple with the whole thing, but this book has seriously inspired me to step up my game a bit. Especially with specific things that will be super easy for me to do.
It also covers SO MUCH. anything you feel you want to know more about in the bookstagram world is in this book. Setting up, interacting, stats, feed, hashtags, photography, algorithms, publishers, bookish company’s, arcs, authors, sponsored work & more! It’s so helpful.
And I absolutely loved all the bookstagrammers involvement! Each little quote/paragraph is very insightful, so many different thoughts and helpful advice from so many different people! There’s full interviews with publishers, authors, and bookish company’s - one of those being ME! I still find it so surreal to be a part of such an amazing book with so many talented people! But Abby made sure to ask me loads of very useful questions so that everyone that reads this will be able to find out exactly what bookish company’s are looking for when they hold a rep/influencer search!
I would definitely recommend getting yourself this book if you’re part of the bookstagram community. You’ll definitely find something in here that will help you in some way.
And finally, I want to send a huge thank you to Abby for creating this book and for asking me to be a part of it. It was honestly an absolute pleasure. I also want to mention - this has no effect on my review what so ever. Abby is an incredible writer whether it’s fiction and non-fiction, she got these five stars all by herself. Thank you again for sending me this book in return for an honest review (I’d have bought & reviewed it anyway!)
This book is one of the most helpful things I have ever read. It came at the perfect time for me as I had already decided to give up on my bookstagram after the algorithm stunted my growth so heavily but this book changed my mind.
Abby makes amazing content on her bookstagram page so it was so great to hear directly from someone who knows what a successful bookstagram looks like. What’s also really great is the book includes tips and tricks from other bookstagrammers, so you get ideas from a few different people.
This book takes you through so many stages of creating a bookstagram page, from actually creating your account to working with publishers. It’s helpful for people at any stage of their bookstagram page so it’s really worth a read even if you are already well established on the site.
I have started to use some of the advice from the book and I’ve already noticed a difference in my growth. More importantly, I’ve been really pleased with the content I’ve been creating, and I’ve been trying new features such as reels thanks to the recommendations in this book.
Overall, I really can’t recommend this book enough, especially if, like me, you’re currently struggling to be seen against the algorithm. I honestly don’t have any complaints. This is definitely something I will go back to if I ever feel like I need help with my Instagram page, so please give this book a read and check out Abby on Instagram!
This one was written by my amazing friend @/outandaboutbooks on Instagram who sent me a free ebook of this! • As a bookstagrammer myself, these were such useful tips! So many things I think I could do better and improve 🤩 I loved reading this one and learning, and seeing my friends taking part as well. It contains an interview with a publisher, an author and a shop owner and everything is super useful! Loved this!
This book did help me feel slightly more confident about sticking with the bookstagram I just created. It is a well written outline of recommendations to help increase your following and interactions as a reader and an author/creator. I am happy to have read this books as I do a few more ideas and inspiration to continue onward.
This book had some great advice on starting a bookstagram account. A lot of the info was stuff I was already aware of, as I’ve been involved in the various book communities for around 5 years now. If you are just starting out and/or considering starting out on bookstagram, this book will be super helpful!
This was such a powerful resource for me! As someone who is fairly new to bookstagram and being a bookstagrammer, I found this book full of tips and tricks I need to know to enter the bookstagram world. A great read for anyone who is thinking about starting a bookstagram account!
