The story of Annie Oakley is more than a story of a female sharpshooter at the end of the 1800's. It's the story of a young girl, a young lady with a great set of morals, loyalty to family and friends, the drive to rise out of poverty, loss, and abuse, to become one of the greatest sharpshooters of all time. Sad to say, I really didn't know much about Annie Oakley before reading this shot book other than the little I knew or thought I knew from TV and the movies. This is definitely a book for all ages.
Annie Oakley is like Americas legendary person. She was the best shooter in a mans world. Also, I thought the romance between her and her husband was sweet. I also enjoyed the pictures.
Oh wow! This history book is like its subject, Annie Oakley: short and sweet, but still amazing. It tells much of her story, from birth to death, instead of just delving into her career as a professional sharp-shooter. One of my favorite things about Annie is the love story with Frank Butler. I didn't know that he died of a broken heart just eighteen days after her! There's so much fascinating information in this book, as well as some conflicting reports. It's neat to see how things are presented, then examined for a better understanding of what probably did happen.
I love how there are references to her autobiography, so there is plenty of primary source information. I am impressed by how Annie worked hard, pretty much as soon as she could walk. I LOVE it that she learned hunting and shooting from her father, competed with her younger brother, and survived poverty then became a star in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. I also adore how she taught around 15,000 women to shoot. She also offered to train women in the first World War! Of course, the sexist mindset of the era meant that there were no female soldiers in that war.
Annie Oakley was a female sharpshooter, participated in various Wild West shows and knew Thomas Edison, Sitting Bull and Prince Edward. She was known as 'Little Miss Sure Shot.'
The book goes into her birth and that she was a tomboy as she was growing up. At eight years odl she was shooting guns. Her family suffered through major poverty. The book then goes into the various jobs she found, the types of shooting that she did, her appearance in theaters, how Hearst hated her for some reason and tried to ruin her reputation, a train wreck she was in and a car wreck she was in.
This whole book was a shock; I thought I knew who Annie Oakley was -- but I didn't. Every page had something new about this pint-sized wonder with a gun. This is a quick read because it is so engrossing. Were you aware Annie was married to another sharpshooter? She was such a winner with the crowds because she was modest and had the air of an accomplished artist about her. She knew how to entertain.
In a story full of surprises, don't miss her meeting with Sitting Bull. It proves that the truth is stranger than fiction. This is a great, quick story about a real Western folk hero.
I really had no idea about Annie Oakley ... what a captivating story! Wild West never had such a bright image in my mind and definitely didn’t expect such a strong “little” woman to exist. It was a pleasure to read her story. I liked that every time I didn’t understand something in the context as if reading my mind, the author gave excellent explanation about the fact. Really enjoyable book!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I never knew anything about Annie Oakley. It was truly refreshing to read about someone who was modest about her tremendous talent. She obviously didn't have an easy life yet she maintained her many good qualities. I was happy to learn that she had a loyal and loving husband. Thank you!
This biography of Annie Oakley is a charming and delightful tale of a western legend from Ohio who never spent any time in the old west. I am anxious to read more Captivating History presentations!
It was an interesting trip into history to find out the facts and the person behind a name we all knew as kids. Now if the author only had an editor...
